Chapter 2
Woo Bin dug his fingers into his hair, his frustration increasing with every passing second. He loved his friends with every fiber of his being. But sometimes, the inner normal person in him wanted to clunk their heads against the wall.
"Did she actually say that?" he asked.
"Yes," said Yi Jeong.
"You mean she used the term ugly?"
"It meant the same thing."
"Yi Jeong. Your obsession with your looks is something you should unpack in therapy. Right now, we've got bigger problems." He pointed towards Jun Pyo, who kept staring at the wall in silent contemplation. This was odd because neither thinking nor being silent was part of his MO.
"Jun Pyo, want to play a game of pool?" asked Yi Jeong.
There was no answer.
"Yi Jeong's planning to dye his hair pink; any thoughts?"
That statement woke Ji Hoo from his eight years of slumber but didn't earn a reply from Jun Pyo.
"Look, Jan Di's here," said Woo Bin. That should get them a response.
Jun Pyo turned to check, his expression hopeful. "Liar."
"Did you and Jan Di have a fight, or something?" asked Ji Hoo.
He paced around the room three times before sinking into the couch. "Today's our anniversary," he murmured.
"You became official two months ago," said Woo Bin.
"True." Jun Pyo smiled like a lovesick puppy. "But exactly one year from today, I decided I was her's forever."
"I'm gonna go puke," said Woo Bin.
"You'll understand when you find your own Jan Di."
"I highly doubt that."
"Ignore him. So today's your anniversary," said Yi Jeong, gesturing Jun Pyo to continue.
"And I'd like to take Jan Di to New Caledonia. But I don't know how to convince her."
"Say it's an early graduation present," said Yi Jeong.
"She has an entire semester of high school left," said Woo Bin. "How about a trip to celebrate us surviving our first semester of college?"
"That was three months ago," said Ji Hoo.
"Guess I could always surprise her," said Jun Pyo.
"If you're willing to accept the consequences, be my guest."
As someone who had seen Jan Di spin-kick, Woo Bin wouldn't willingly take that risk. But Jun Pyo looked desperate enough to try.

He ran his fingers through every curve, marveling at the smooth texture. He couldn't believe she was finally in front of him.
Stepping closer, he committed every detail to memory. The graceful slope of her neck. Her perfect curves. The symmetrical shape of her lips—neither too broad nor too narrow.
She was far lovelier than he remembered.
He peeled his eyes away. Reclaiming her came at a hefty price, one he wasn't sure he was willing to pay.
"Hello, Lover Boy," said Jun Pyo.
"What do you want?" asked Yi Jeong.
"You know the rules. If you want that beauty back, you need to do as you're told."
"Or else?"
"Do you really want to take the risk?"
"You wouldn't hurt her."
"Come on, bro. Just this time, please."
"Fine. But remember the deal. You give me Clarrise back."
"I remember. I'll even throw in that Chinese vase you always wanted," said Jun Pyo.
Yi Jeong ran his hands over Clarrise. She was his favorite pottery piece, and not just because of her beauty.
He created her during the darkest period of his life. A time when he spent more days sleeping outside a hospital ward than in his own bed.
He squeezed his eyes shut. It took years before the sight of his mother, bleeding out on the ground, a knife clutched in her fist, stopped haunting his dreams. Even longer before car horns stopped sounding like ambulance sirens.
He touched Clarrise against his cheek, letting the cool texture calm him. His pottery was his saving grace. The only thing that enabled him to retain some of his sanity
Jun Pyo saw Clarrise as Yi Jeong's prized possession. Any other artist would see her as a well-crafted, flawless piece. But to Yi Jeong, she was so much more. She was the literal representation of hope. After all, the day after he finished making her, his mother was discharged.
"Do you guys have to do this where I nap?" said Ji Hoo, snapping Yi Jeong back to reality. He stretched awake. "You know that you people look like a bunch of drunkards, right? Yi Jeong, stop naming your pots. It's really creepy."
"Clarrise isn't just any pot. She's my masterpiece. Look at the texture. It's smooth, graceful, and uniform. Yet at the same time, not too dull or boring. Look how nicely shaped her lips are. Elegant without being flashy. The engravings give her an ancient look, but the color brings out the contemporary part of her."
"Of course. Not creepy at all."

Yi Jeong took one last look at his reflection in the rearview mirror, before heading towards the porridge shop. He had worn his best suit. Spent an hour styling his hair, and another picking his shoes. He wanted to ensure that even the slightest idea of him being ugly escaped Ga Eul's mind. Looks were important to Yi Jeong, and there was nothing wrong with that. No matter what Woo Bin said.
She looked busy arranging utensils on a tray. He stood patiently at the door, waiting for her to finish.
"May I have a few minutes of your time?" he asked.
She looked up at him, but without any animosity in her eyes.
So far, so good.
Going by how their last encounter went, he thought she would throw one of the bowls at him.
"Sure," she said with a smile.
She had a nice smile. One that warmed him from the inside, like sipping hot coco near the fireplace on a cold winter's night.
He fixed his collar. "You've got nice food."
He mentally cursed himself. It sounded normal in his head. Until he realized, he never ate here. As a waitress, she probably knew that. Luckily, she didn't read too much into it.
Putting the tray down, she came to hear him out. "Is there anything I can help you with?"
"First of all, I would like to apologize for last time. I was just concerned about my friend. Their lives are very different. Things could get rather… complicated. But Jan Di's a great girl, and I get why Jun Pyo's crazy about her."
She fixed her apron. "So would I. I blew things a little out of proportion. It's just—Jan Di's had a hard time—at Shinwa." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Anyway. I'm sorry."
That was not what he was expecting. He took a minute to collect himself, before saying, "I also have a favor to ask."
She nodded.
"Jun Pyo wants to take Jan Di on a trip to New Caledonia. And was hoping you could accompany us. It's a beautiful place, and if you're there, Jan Di would feel more comfortable."
She took a minute to process his words. Which made sense. According to Ji Hoo, running off to random places wasn't a part of most commoner's daily routine.
"Why didn't Jun Pyo Sunbae come here himself?"
"Trust me. You would not want him here."
Apparently, that explanation wasn't enough.
"You see, he really wants Jan Di to come. And he thought that if he went, he might screw things up. Not that I couldn't." He loosened his collar. "Look, he has my pot, and he said he would return it if I did this for him. Please consider it. It's only for two days. And it's a beautiful place. I think you'll have fun."
She regarded him for a minute, deep in thought. Maybe his begging amused her. Maybe she thought he was poorly dressed. He couldn't tell from her expression, but he sincerely hoped it was the former.
"Okay, I'll come. Jan Di deserves a vacation, and I know Jun Pyo Sunbae is a good guy."
"Great. The plane leaves in an hour. That gives us just enough time to get there. I'll ask Woo Bin to inform your parents." With that said, he walked towards his car.
She informed her boss on the way out. He didn't seem pleased, but he didn't refuse either.
_oOo_
The flight was almost peaceful. Jan Di was yelling at Jun Pyo for dragging her here. Ga Eul was reading a book. Ji Hoo was tuning his violin. And Woo Bin was—he craned his neck to get a better look—texting. With a wide smile on his face.
Strange.
He filed that away for later.
As soon as they got off, the F4 separated. Jun Pyo pulled Jan Di towards the stores. Woo Bin swaggered towards the ladies who came to greet him. Ji Hoo laid down under a shady tree. While Yi Jeong stayed with Ga Eul. After all, he was the one who brought her here.
It turned out to be unnecessary.
She seemed to enjoy the solitude. With her phone camera in hand, she roamed the island. Clicking pictures, enjoying the view, sipping some coconut water.
After an hour or so, she settled for watching the waves. "I've always loved the seaside. There's some mystery—some duality to it—that I find interesting. It's serene and pleasant, but has the ability to turn into a storm."
He smiled at her observation.
"So, how long have you guys known each other?"
"Since we were six."
She listened with interest, so he elaborated. "We went to this camp when we were young. I still remember it clearly. I was making a pot when this kid came and smashed it." He laughed. "Don't make that shocked expression. He wasn't one of us."
She played with the ends of her hair. "Sorry. Please continue."
"His name was Gong Suk, I think. I had worked for hours on that piece. And I was very young. Just six years old. So I started crying. And only stopped when I noticed another kid shocker-punch Gong Suk in the face."
"That's kind of sweet."
"He then handed me what was left of my pot and said, 'Wuss'."
"I'm gonna guess that was Woo Bin Sunbae?"
"Bingo. How did you know?"
She leaned back into the sand. "Jan Di talks about the F4 a lot."
That made sense. The F4 provided constant fodder for conversation.
"So anyway. I was saying." He dropped a fistful of sand from his fingertips. "All this noise disturbed my roommate's sleep. Who hit all three of us with a rolled-up piece of paper. That boy, as you can probably guess, was Ji Hoo."
She splashed her legs in the water. "The only person missing is Jun Pyo Sunbae."
"We'll get there. Give it a few more minutes," he said. "So, we all got detention. And that is where we met the great Gu Jun Pyo. Who kept trying to convince us to build an escape tunnel using forks and spoons."
She chuckled. "What was he in for anyway?"
"Nothing. He was never given detention. He just showed up for some reason. I think he was going through his Tom Sawyer phase? And really wanted to be a badass? So he kept following Woo Bin around, asking for advice." He got up and dusted the sand from his clothes. "So anyway, that's the story."
They took a stroll along the beach.
"How did you meet the lovely Geum Jan Di?"
Her face lit up.
"This took place when we were in kindergarten. A boy—around eight or nine years old—was trying to steal apples from Jan Di's garden. This is how she tells the story; I wasn't actually there. Jan Di, being the girl she is, chased him down the street. But her running got a little out of control. She ended up bumping into my grandmother, ruining all her cookies."
"The same old Geum Jan Di. Never backing down from a fight."
She suppressed a smile. "Her mother was furious. As punishment, she forced Jan Di to remake all the cookies. She was really struggling. Jan Di was never much of a baker, especially at age five. And that's where I come in. I always loved cooking, even as a child. So I helped out."
"It's getting a little sunny. Let's stand under that tree."
She followed after him. "I had just moved to the block. So I was thrilled to have a friend. We even went to the same schools. Up until she moved to Shinwa."
She looked up at the clouds with a wistful expression on her face. She didn't look sad. Just lost in memory.
"All throughout our school days, Jan Di was my bodyguard. She scared off most of the guys who approached me. I remember this one time in fifth grade, this boy gave me a flower. He picked it out of the school ground, and the mud was making me sneeze. I don't know what she did exactly, but that was the last boy who went after me that year."
"Poor you," said Yi Jeong. They all knew what Jan Di was capable of.
"Actually, it kept all the freaks away. Plus, I knew that the ones who did approach me were serious. I mean, approaching me meant having to face Jan Di first."
"You should have been there to witness what we had to go through while growing up. Our experiences are more similar than you would think."
"What do you mean?"
"As we grew up, Ji Hoo got interested in music and Woo Bin in Marshall Arts, while I was still into pottery. Jun Pyo, on the other hand, was going through his Edgar Allen Poe phase. So while Woo Bin and I were courting girls, Jun Pyo was scaring them off by reciting poems on death, war, and destruction."
The man in question came running towards them.
"There you both are," said Jun Pyo. "Come on. It's bonding time."
Despite Jun Pyo's protest, the group decided to go horseback riding. The horses didn't like him much, which Jan Di found hilarious. Ji Hoo's horse was resting right next to him. While Woo Bin thought that running away with the horse's food was more fun.
Turning away from his friends, Yi Jeong searched for Ga Eul. She stood in front of a white stallion, trying her best to get on.
"Here. Take my hand." He helped her up.
"Thank you, Yi Jeong Sunbae."
"Please. Call me Yi Jeong."
_oOo_
Three hours later, Yi Jeong waited outside Jun Pyo's private jet for Ji Hoo. Everyone else had arrived.
"He's probably asleep somewhere," said Woo Bin. "I'll go find him."
Before Yi Jeong could offer to go with him, Ga Eul called out his name.
She picked at the end of her ponytail, her eyes on the ground. "I have a favor to ask."
What do you think Ga Eul is going to ask for? Will Yi Jeong be able to give that to her?
Tell us your guesses in the reviews.
