Ga Eul paced the room for the seventh time that hour. She had not been still since submitting her dish and the more the time for the results grew nearer, the more anxious she grew.
"Ga Eul," Yi Jeong put his arms on her shoulders to halt her progress.
"They haven't called, Yi Jeong." Ga Eul kneeled against the sofa. "They said the selected candidates would be notified within three days. It has been three days! Why haven't they called yet?"
"She sounds just like how Yi Jeong does when she doesn't call," Woo Bin whispered to Jae Kyung
"You got to calm down. The dish you submitted was very good. I'm sure it'll be fine."
"Good?" Ga Eul took a deep breath. "Good. Is NOT good Enough. Yi Jeong."
Jae Kyung put an arm around Ga Eul. "Come on, let's get you some ice-cream."
Ga Eul gestured for Jan Di to come along and the three girls walked out of the house.
"They just left us," said Woo Bin. "This is how Jun Pyo must feel all the time.
_oOo_
Yi Jeong, Woo Bin and Jae Kyung were too preoccupied with anxiously watching Ga Eul to enjoy their ice-cream. Jan Di, on the other hand, suffered from no such predicament and was already on her third bowl.
"What?" she said to the onlookers. "I hardly get a break. I deserve this."
Even Jan Di gulping down the ice-cream like a child with seven brothers did not cause Ga Eul to look up from her phone screen. Yi Jeong desperately looked around for a conversation starter that might do the trick. "So, Ga Eul, how come you didn't ask Jan Di to babysit?"
Jan Di put down her spoon. "Yeah? How come?"
"Jan Di-ah, you are a warm and motherly person." She shifted in her seat. "And you are great with kids, in your own way, but Si Wo and Ha Eun are still…overwhelmed from the last time you babysat."
" I don't understand why." Jan Di took another bite of ice-cream. "All I did was tell Ha Eun that the princess culture was a representation of the shackles of patriarchy."
"You also made them watch a horror movie about naughty kids who were sent to military school."
"The one where they were stuck on that island, were forced to shave their head and had to catch their own dinner? I loved that movie. Watched it with my dad on one of our father son bonding trips."
Ga Eul nodded at Woo Bin.
"I thought that movie would improve their problem solving skills. Besides, we also did other things. Like we had a lot of fun playing hide-and-seek."
"Jan Di, you never went to look for them."
Jan Di finished the rest of her ice-cream. "Well, it was very fun for me."
"That's why I didn't ask you."
"Well your style of babysitting is too derivative."
After everyone had finished their ice-cream, the group headed back to the F4 lounge. Yi Jeong was pleased to see that Ga Eul seemed a lot calmer.
"Last one to the F4 lounge is President Kang's blushing bride," said Woo Bin as he and Jae Kyung dashed towards the door. Jan Di rolled her eyes and settled herself with a book in Jun Pyo's room. Ga Eul and Yi Jeong sauntered into the lounge and briefly stopped at the door.
"Yi Jeong?"
"Yes?"
"Thanks for the mirror. My parents liked it. I think," said Ga Eul as she made her way into the lounge.
Yi Jeong adjusted his tie, fixed his hair, and followed her inside. "So they noticed?"
"Yeah but don't worry, they think it's a belated anniversary present."
"You didn't get them anything for their anniversary?"
"Well apparently preparing a five course meal and a two tier cake, that takes you all day to make, doesn't count as an anniversary present," said Ga Eul waving her arms in the air.
"Ga Eul there you are." Woo Bin brought out a pair of black ankle-length boots. " Look at these shoes. Do you think Jan Di would like them? I got them for her birthday."
"Yeah, she would. It's not like there is any appreciation left for hand-made gifts that take actual effort."
"These did take effort. Jan Di, surprisingly, has gigantic feet. I had to go to six stores," said Woo Bin as he followed Ga Eul out of the F4 lounge.
"I heard that," yelled Jan Di chasing after Woo Bin.
Yi Jeong was about to follow after them but the ringing phone caused him to pause.
"Hello, Jun Pyo. How is Jun Hee noona?"
"Great. Do you think Jan Di would not appreciate me building a spa in her dorm? Noona said it's a bad idea."
Woo Bin chose that point to walk in. "Both Jan Di and Ga Eul went home and dragged Jae Kyung along with them. How rude." He crossed his arms. "I wanted to hang out with Jae."
"Is that Woo Bin in the background?" asked Jun Pyo. "Who is he talking about?"
"His girlfriend."
Woo Bin snatched the phone from Yi Jeong. "The only one in a committed relationship in this room is Yi Jeong. He is about to enter a long term, till death do them part commitment. He is going to be your new mommy." Woo Bin shook Yi Jeong's hand. "Congratulations on your impending nuptials with president Kang, Yi Jeong."
Yi Jeong rolled his eyes and walked away.
"Where are you going?"
"After them. They are probably going to take the bus home."
The guys found the girls two blocks away from the lounge, huddled together in a circle, jumping up and down.
Yi Jeong walked towards them. "So, I'm guessing there is good news."
The girls took the guys hands and invited them to join in. The five of them joined together in a circle, jumping around chanting, "She got in! She got in!"
_oOo_
"All the best, Ga Eul." The girls hugged her one by one.
Jan Di took out a red pen from her pocket. "Jun Pyo asked me to give you this. Apparently this pen has helped him win my heart."
"Tell him I said thanks," said Ga Eul.
Yi Jeong took a step forward and removed his signature crown-shaped ring from his ring finger. He took Ga Eul's hand and put it on her index finger. Seeing that it was too big, he then placed it on her thumb. "Good luck Ga Eul. You're going to do great."
Jae Kyung took out a chef hat from her purse and placed it on Ga Eul's head. "This belonged to the chef who works at my parent's house in Turkey. I asked the staff to ship it over. He achieved a lot of success in the culinary world before he settled down and started working for us. It suits you."
Woo Bin took out his phone and played a recording. "And the winner who gets to study under the one and only, Chef Piero Alfred Lee, Korea-division is Mr.… Beep …Ms. Chu Ga Eul."
"Sorry my editing skills are not top-notch," he sighed as he emailed the recording to her.
It was a recording in which the announcer congratulated the winner of last year's competition. Only Woo Bin had beeped out the winner's name and replaced it with a recording of him saying Ga Eul's name.
Both Jan Di and Yi Jeong glared at him.
"Thank you, Sunbae. Don't get my hopes up though," said Ga Eul as she hugged him.
It's too crowded. They won't let all of us in to get her registered.
"I'll go," said Yi Jeong taking Ga Eul with him while Woo Bin held Jan Di back.
"So the line for registration is over there. Let's go. You have everything you need, right? Your ID, your hall ticket, your apron, all four of your good luck charms?"
"Well, I don't think I can keep Woo Bin Sunbae's recording with me. They won't let us take cellphones inside with us."
They stood in line to get registered. And with each candidate making their way out of the line, it grew shorter and shorter. Every time the person working the desk shouted for the next candidate to come in, and directed them to their working station, Ga Eul grew more nervous
"You're going to be fine, Ga Eul. You've worked really hard. And this is the last round."
"I know. It's just difficult to fathom that I am finally here. This is real, and yet it could all be taken away from me."
"Or it could be the best risk you ever took."
"Next," yelled a voice indicating that it was Ga Eul's turn to get her name registered and then go and stand at her station. "Ma'am cellphones, study material, and all electronic devices are prohibited. Hand them to someone or submit them in one of our lockers."
Ga Eul handed her phone to Yi Jeong who put it in his pocket.
"I guess this is it. All the best, Ga Eul. You're going to kill it."
"Thanks. For the support. And for making me do this." She buried her face in his torso for one last hug, before being escorted towards her workstation.
Yi Jeong watched her being guided towards her station in the kitchen where the competition was going to be held. Her made his way past the crowd and joined some other people who stood outside the kitchen. Ga Eul stood at her station and fiddled with her hands as she observed all the equipment laid out in front of her. In a brief moment, her nervousness was replaced with pure fangirl euphoria. Yi Jeong's eyes found the reason for this change - Chef Lee, who was standing on the stage, announcing the commencement of the competition.
"Good luck, Ga Eul," whispered Yi Jeong, even though Ga Eul couldn't actually hear him.
With that said, he made his way towards the exit where the rest of his friends were waiting.
He found the rest of the group settled on a bench. Jae Kyung was gently massaging Woo Bin's arms while he and Jan Di were yelling incomprehensible things at each other. As he grew closer, their gibberish started to make more sense.
"Stop being a baby. I didn't punch you that hard." Yelled Jan Di.
"Look at my arm, right here," he pointed to a spot on his arm. "It's gotten red."
"Drama queen, you are so needy." Jan Di tapped Jae Kyung, who was still nursing Woo Bin's arm, on the shoulder. "Stop enabling this childishness. There is nothing wrong with him." She then turned to Woo Bin. "You selfish douche, taking advantage of her care and concern. Her arms are probably aching."
Woo Bin Gently removed Jae Kyung's hands from his arm, "Thanks, I'm okay now." He then turned to Jan Di, "You know what aching is? I'm surprised."
Woo Bin was about to continue but seeing Yi Jeong he stopped. "Hi, join us. Sit away from Jan Di though. She is trying to earn her 'maim as many men as you can' badge for her anatomy class."
"If that was the case then I would have dissected you by now."
Poor Jae Kyung, whose arms were probably hurting from tending to Woo Bin's pretend injury, and eardrums buzzing from Jan Di's lectures, turned to Yi Jeong. "Did the competition start? All Okay in there?"
Yi Jeong nodded.
"Was she happy to see him?" asked Woo Bin.
Yi Jeong sighed. "Yeah."
Woo Bin patted his back. "It's ok, bro. What's that in your pocket?"
Yi Jeong took out Ga Eul's phone.
Woo Bin took him aside. "Dude," Woo Bin whispered. "The solution to all your problems lies in your pocket. I have a friend… we call him Wei. He is excellent at hacking and yodeling."
"I don't like where this is going."
"You can spend an eternity wondering who her heart belongs to or you can seize the day and find out. Right here, right now."
Yi Jeong walked back to the group, took out the phone, and almost gave it to Woo Bin but then took it back. He took a deep breath and then gave the phone to Jae Kyung and bolted.
"Do you think he is coming back?" asked Jae Kyung.

"Focus," Ga Eul murmured. Fantasizing about Chef Lee wasn't going to help win the competition. They had been given two hours to prepare a three-course meal. They would be evaluated on all three of their dishes, each of which must meet the expected standard. She looked around the room but couldn't spot any familiar friendly faces. Her fellow competitors were busy thinking about the dishes they were going to make. Ga Eul had already decided what she would be preparing. She had been following Chef Lee's work ever since they were both kids and had played out this competition in her mind over a million times. There was one minute left until the buzzer for the competition rang, after which they would have to run into the pantry and get the ingredients for their dishes. Ga Eul was brought out of her thoughts by the loud sound of the buzzer. She mentally thanked her gym teacher as she sprinted towards the pantry and started gathering her ingredients in a basket. The contestants ran back to their stations and started on their dishes.
Ga Eul was stirring some soy sauce, ginger, brown sugar, and curry powder to marinate her chicken livers. She had made Rumaki many times at home and it wasn't something she was unfamiliar with, but at that moment, she felt like a toddler who was learning how to hold a spoon. She gathered her composure and started working on the dough for her dessert: Deconstructed napoleon cannoli with mascarpone cream topped with berry sauce. This sweet heaven was proving to be an agonizing ordeal. It wasn't a simple dish to make, and combined with the other two courses, seemed impossible to do in the given time. The fact that they were pressed for time didn't give Ga Eul a chance to lament over her decisions. She started frying the prawns and making the filling for her wontons. The entrée, or as some might say, the main event of any culinary experience, could decide whether she would be seasoning her soup with tears of sadness or joy in the near future. The Thai delicacy, fried spot prawns with scallop shrimp wontons in a Thai coconut curry sauce seemed apt for a competition like this, if she could pull it off.

Jan Di tapped her fingers against the edge of the bench. "How do you think she is doing? They have cameras in there right? Some evil, snotty Shinwavian won't succeed in knocking over her dish or anything?"
"Don't worry, Jan Di, I'm sure it'll be fine."
"Yi Jeong," Woo Bin pulled him aside. "Bro, I got to pee."
Yi Jeong stared at him. "Hold it in, you toddler."
"Easy for you to say. You were gone for a good twenty minutes. You probably peed three times in that time period."
Jan Di looked between Woo Bin and Yi Jeong. Woo Bin was squirming in the corner of the bench.
"Yi Jeong Sunbae, I have to go too. I think I saw a gas station a couple of blocks away."
The guys stood outside the restrooms waiting for the girls to finish up.
"This was the first time I peed in a public toilet," said Yi Jeong.
"Bro," Woo Bin turned towards him. "Do you think I'm a selfish douche?"
"Yi Jeong put a hand on Woo Bin's shoulder. "Woo Bin, I have no doubt about it."
Woo Bin turned away from him and stared at the ground.
"Hey, you may be childish, and at times selfish, but it's more out of ignorance than spite and you do care about your friends rather fiercely. Even if you do drive them nuts." Yi Jeong smiled. "I'm sure Jan Di didn't mean it."
The girls joined them a minute later and the group walked back to the waiting area. In what seemed like hours, but was probably at most, fifteen minutes, Ga Eul came out.
"Hey," The girls ran towards her and engulfed her in a bear hug. Ga Eul handed Jan Di the pen.
"You can keep the hat. Consider it a blessing from the chefs in Turkey."
Ga Eul caught Yi Jeong's eye. She ambled towards him. Taking his hand in hers she flipped it over and put the ring on his palm.
"Yi Jeong," She gave him a warm smile. "Thank you."

After dropping Jan Di off, the group made their way to Ga Eul's house. As they reached the door, Jae Kyung taped Ga Eul on her shoulder, causing the other girl to look up from her phone screen.
"Ga Eul, what are you wearing at the party?"
"Party?"
"Yi Jeong's work party, tomorrow?"
Ga Eul bit her lips. "I don't have anything too fancy. I'm wearing one of my nicer dresses. The royal blue one with net sleeves."
Jae Kyung let out a sigh of relief. "Okay, Ga Eul. You must be tired. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Ga Eul," Yi Jeong said and was about to leave when he was stopped by Chin Hae.
Chin Hae folded his arms together. "We have to talk. You really broke someone's heart today."
