Chapter 9: Time Doesn't Care

Edward

I pressed my lips together, flattening them, while I exhaled loudly, getting my classmate's attention, as my phone vibrated on my desk, for the third time in the last thirty minutes.

I was sitting in my summer economics class, irritated as hell with my professor, Dr. "Monotone" but to make matters worse my family had been blowing my phone up all week.

I've been avoiding their phone calls since that disastrous dinner happened, and in doing so, they've doubled their efforts calling me, including Alice.

She doesn't call often and when she does, she usually wants something.

Yeah, I know it's a dick move, especially to my parents, but I don't give a fuck right now.

Eleazar went too damn far and I need space.

They fuss and complain when I don't come to family dinners but that is the very reason why I don't go.

I've always hated when he's tried to analyze me, and he knows it.

Why he won't stop it behooves the hell outta me.

If I wanted to know I would ask him.

And now his know-it-all ass has Dad being inquisitive.

I know it's only a matter of time before my parents show up at my apartment wanting to talk.

Fuck!

I rolled my shoulders, sighing loud enough for Hailey, the one sitting next to me, to raise an eyebrow at me.

She leaned in close enough so no one else could hear. "What's up with you? You've been in a funk all week."

She was right, I've been shitty for days now.

Even at work, I've been quiet, only talking when necessary.

I continued to look straight ahead, not bothering to look at her. "Nothing's up."

I felt her hot breath in my ear. "Wanna leave early and head back to my dorm."

I shook my head, no.

"Come on baby, I'll do the thing you like." Her tone was shameless.

Good thing we sat in the back of the auditorium like classroom.

My dick twitched remembering when she did the thing.

As annoyed as I've been with my family maybe blowing off some steam is exactly what I needed.

Seriously, why the hell not.

It's always been a no strings attached thing with her anyway.

The only reason it stopped was because of Bella.

She was one of the few that walked away quietly when I told her I was in a committed relationship.

But that's not the case now, as much as I hate it, I'm a free man to do as I please, without any questions asked.

I slowly turned to face her.

Hailey smirked.

"After class." I nodded.

She slowly leaned away licking her lips.

The things she can do with her mouth.

Once I was able to look away from her mouth, I glanced down at my phone noticing we had another ten minutes of class left, and Emmett left another voicemail.

I hadn't listened to any of the messages because I didn't want to hear how I should've walked out of my parents' house.

Maybe between going a few rounds with Hailey and some weed my mood will change.

My summer started off good.

Bella was finally on summer break which gave me a break from driving down state twice a month.

Our relationship was good, up until Piper opened her damn mouth and then things went downhill from there.

Yeah, I know I played my part in it too, but I didn't think she would actually break up with me and mean it.

I'd bet my last dollar that motherfucker Grayson has something to do with her not getting back with me.

I saw it written all over his face at Manny's.

But game knows game.

He's playing that friend card bullshit until he beds her.

There's no way in hell I'll let that happen.

I was her first and I plan on being her only.

A good fuck and a doobie are all I needed to get my head back in the game.

I've never really had competition, that I had to be concerned about, when it came to our relationship.

I've done my shit in the past but something's different this time. I don't know what it is but I don't like it at all.

Bella will be going back to school in about a month, which gives me plenty of time to fix this and make her mine again.

By the time I'm done this Grayson motherfucker will be a faint memory.

He won't even be a blimp on her radar.

"Come on Edward." Hailey brought me out my thoughts.

I hadn't realized class ended.

I can get notes from Hailey. She's not just another pretty face. She has A's in all of her classes.

I stood up stuffing my notebook in my backpack, as she did the same thing.

We were some of the last to leave the classroom, both walking with our arms looped around each other's waist.

"Do you want to grab a bite to eat first or do you want to go straight back to my room?" Hailey asked.

"Let's grab some burgers but take it back to your room."

"Okay." She nodded. "The cafeteria it is then."

We continued down the hallway, heading out the door to the other building where the cafeteria was.

As usual, students were everywhere even though it was the summer semester.

When I decided to take a couple of classes, at first, I thought it was a bad idea since it would cut into my time with Bella but since everything took a turn for the worse, it gave me less time to think about how fucked up everything is.

Surprisingly there wasn't a long line before we could order our food. After we placed our order, we stood nearby waiting for our number to be called.

"Edward I've missed you so much." Hailey purred in my ear, with one hand laid on my chest. "So, it's true you and your girlfriend broke up, right?"

Between Alice and Piper that news spread like wildfire.

"Yeah." That's all I gave her.

She didn't need to know anything else.

Although, I'm sure the story has been added, multiplied and divided with the two of them running their damn mouths.

Hailey looped one arm around my waist, while the other continued to rest on my chest.

"You know I love my fun with you, but I don't interfere in people's relationships. I wouldn't want anyone to do me like that if I was in one."

I wrapped my arm around her small waist. "And I appreciate that baby, but you don't have to worry about that. I'm free as a bird."

She stood on her tiptoes kissing my lips softly.

The kiss was light but filled with promise of what was to come.

As she slowly pulled away, I felt someone looking at me.

Three dudes in the far corner were staring at me, hard.

Two of them I was positive I didn't know.

But the third one looked familiar.

I squinted trying to get a better look at him since I couldn't see all of his face.

Hailey shifted as she saw me looking at something across the room.

Grayson

I was almost done with college.

I'd been working my ass off since high school for my accelerated bachelor/master's criminal justice program.

There were a couple of classes that were available during the summer semester that I had to take since they wouldn't be available in the fall, which would push my graduation date back… and I wasn't having that.

It worked out since both classes were in the evening, after I got off work.

I was meeting up with Leo and Graham so we could eat before we went to meet with the rest of our study group for our statistical analysis class.

When I walked in the cafeteria, I saw the both of them skimming the menu.

Just so happened two people not too far away from the guys, were openly groping each other.

I slightly titled my head because the guys unusual hair color looked familiar.

"Gray, over here." Graham got my attention.

I turned around, forgetting about the male who I might have known and walked over with the guys.

"What took you so long? We've been waiting." Leo said.

"I needed to ask Professor Francis a question about the next assignment due and the conversation went longer than expected."

"Oh." Graham wiggled his eyebrows. "I thought you were going to tell us that Jennifer stopped you again."

"No." I pursed my lips. "I was able to dodge her by talking to the professor."

"Gray, I don't understand why you won't hit that." Graham said.

"Because I don't want to…" I paused using air quotes with my fingers. "…hit that, as you say."

"Dude have you looked at her body?"

"How could I miss it the way she's always throwing it at me." I grimaced.

"Just give her what she wants." Graham smirked. "I would."

"We don't all go through women the way you do." Leo rolled his eyes.

"Exactly." I agreed. "Come on so we can order."

"Hey." Leo bumped Graham's arm. "Isn't that what's her name you were with not too long ago?"

Graham and I looked in the direction Leo looked in.

"Yeah, that's Heather… Hannah…Holly." He ran his hand through his hair. "What the hell is her name?"

"Doesn't look like she remembers you either." Leo teased.

Graham shrugged his shoulders. "So."

I stepped around Graham so I could get a better look.

Hold up…

Is that who I think it is?

This motherfucker.

Bella's ex.

The one who was dumb enough to cheat on her.

The one who calls her everyday begging her to come back to him.

Yet he's standing in the student cafeteria with his hands all over another female.

I shook my head and muttered. "Dumb fuck."

Leo's eyebrows shot up. "You know him?"

"Yeah, I know of him."

"How?" Graham crossed his arms. "Why is he looking at you like that?"

Edward glared, with a visible vein across his forehead.

I glared back. "Bella's ex."

"When did she dated him? Because I've seen him with all kinds of girls." Graham said.

"That's why he's her ex." I snorted.

"Damn, that's fucked up." Leo tsked.

Edward

I couldn't believe this goofy fucker went to school here.

Although, there are thousands of students here, how would I have known.

But still…

My body tensed.

I stared intently. I felt a vein throbbing across my forehead.

My first reaction was to knock the shit outta him.

But I wasn't in the right place.

I needed to calm down.

Hailey rubbed my chest, frowning. "Edward, honey, what's wrong? Why are you looking like that?"

I couldn't tell her the truth because I just told her I was single again.

"One of those dudes still owes me money for his tat."

Thankfully she didn't turn around but even if she did all three of them were sporting tats.

Easy lie.

"Oh, okay." I don't think she was convinced.

"Why don't you go get our food and I'll meet you by the door in a few minutes." I squeezed her hand.

"Okay." She nodded before walking away.

I looked over my shoulder to make sure she was far enough not to hear what I was going to say.

I stepped closer to the asshole and his two lackeys'. "I'm going to say this once." I held up my index finger. "Stay. The. Hell. Away. From. Bella."

He looked me in the face and laughed.

The fucker laughed in my face.

And then his friends joined in.

"Look ass—"

He cut me off. "Is that why you sent her…" He jerked his chin in the direction Hailey went. "…away so she couldn't hear."

"That's not your business. Stay away from Bella."

He crossed his arms. "And if I don't?"

I could tell he worked out.

He was a little taller than me and bulkier, but I could take him.

"I guess you'll find out the hard way then." I smirked.

"I guess I will" He scoffed. "You're a fuckn joke."

"Who do you think you're talking to?" My teeth grinded.

My own breath sounded loud in my ears.

"You, you asshole." He laughed without humor. "You're feeling one chick up but then you're trying to tell me to stay away from Bella…your ex." He stepped closer to me. "I'm not going anywhere until she tells me to. So, you can step off with that bullshit."

I ignored his comment about Hailey. "It's only a matter of time before I get her back and when I do, you'll be the one stepping off." I jutted my chin.

"I doubt it." He shrugged one shoulder. "But if that happens, she'll tell me, not you. So, how about you run along to your next conquest." He waved me off dismissively and his friends chuckled in the background. "I hear that's what you're good at."

I took another step closer with clenched fist. "Motherfucker I will—"

"You don't want none of this." He held is hands up in surrender.

"Easy to say when you have backup."

"I don't need backup." He fixedly stared, in a firm voice.

A burning sensation shot through my stomach.

He was going to be a problem.

Would this jerk get in the way of me winning Bella back?

Would she pick him over me?

Now you're pushing it a little too far, dude.

She knows better.

Grayson pulled me out of my internal monologue. "We're done here."

"Yeah, we're done. Just stay away from Bella."

"I thought you were only saying that once." The blonde dude laughed.

"Fuck you." I sneered.

"No, thanks." He laughed arrogantly. "But ask Hailey to do that little special thing she does with her mouth though." He winked.

Grayson and the other guy snorted, exchanging looks.

My eyes bulged.

My lips curled up.

I tasted a bitter tang in my mouth.

I'd never been in a relationship with Hailey, it's always been just sex. But for him to throw the special thing she does with her mouth in my face.

I was disgusted.

Her mouth has been on his…

Yeah…

I was done.

Just then Hailey walked up, smiling. "Edward, honey, are you ready?"

I didn't want to be mean to her but what was originally planned had just been fucked up by the asshat that stood with a wide grin on his face.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm ready." I had to come up with something quick. "But there's been a change of plans."

"Oh." She looked confused.

"I'm sorry but I totally forgot about plans with my sister. I have to meet her in twenty minutes." I gently squeezed her arm. "Can we get together another time?"

Luckily, she didn't know how my relationship with Alice really was or she would've known it was a load of crap.

Hailey slowly shook her head but didn't make eye contact. "Sure."

I knew it was a fucked-up move and a bit naïve of me to think she'd only been with me, but I couldn't' get that image out of my head.

"Do you still want your food?" She whispered.

"No, you can have it." I looked down at my watch. "I've gotta go. I'll see you later."

I didn't even wait for her to respond back before I walked away.

Damn.

I needed that release too.

I was either going to have to find someone else or handle it myself.

But something more important, pressing, caused me to tense up.

The thought of him, Grayson or anybody for that fact, touching Bella.

My chest caved slightly remembering his hand on hers at Manny's.

I stuck my hands in my jean pockets, looking down as I continued to walk to my car.

I was giving myself whiplash with the mood swings I've been having but the thought of another guy touching Bella made me sick.

And with this Grayson asshole in the picture, it just might happen.

I saw the way he looked at her when I watched them at Manny's but more importantly, I saw the way she looked at him.

A small part of me couldn't be upset with the way he looked at her, how could you not. Wherever we would go out, guys would always look at her.

She was fuckn beautiful.

She was perfect.

Her creamy, soft skin. Big chocolate brown eyes, I'd get lost in every time. Full, pouty lips, with a smile that can light up any room. Long, wavy, mahogany hair, that fell right above perfectly round ass, that I couldn't keep my hands off of.

Whenever she wore dresses or skirts single men and even men with dates couldn't stop looking because she had legs for days. Them looking never bothered me because I was the one taking her home, where she wrapped those same sexy ass legs around my waist as I moved in and out of her, as she called my name.

Just like clockwork my phone rang again from my back pocket brining me out of my daze.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, irritated.

It wasn't who I wanted it to be so anybody else was just an annoyance.

"What?" I snapped.

"That's a way to answer your phone dumb ass."

"What the fuck do you want Alice?"

"You haven't been answering your phone."

I slammed my car that I'd finally made it to. "And?"

"And…I've been trying to get in touch with you."

"And what does that mean to me?"

"It could've been an emergency or something and you're not answering your damn phone."

She was on my last nerve already.

"Is mom and dad okay?" I tried to ask calmly.

"Yeah."

"How about the twins or Rosalie?"

"They're good too."

"Em and El?"

"Their fine. I just talked to both them yesterday."

I sighed heavy and pinched my lips together. "Okay, Alice, I'm going to ask you again, what do you want?"

"I could've told you that five minutes ago if you hadn't asked me all those questions. Anyway, Piper has been calling you, but she said you've been ignoring her calls too."

"You called to tell me Piper has been calling me?" I laughed without humor.

"Yes, I did." She answered curtly.

"And you thought I wouldn't know that already?"

"Since you hadn't returned any of her calls or texts, I took it upon myself to call you to tell you to call her back."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because she said she has something to talk to you about."

"I have nothing to say to her. Since that's your bestie, why don't you tell me what she wants." I tried to compromise.

"I have no idea what she wants to talk to you about. I've been too busy with looking into schools and dealing with my own issues to be bothered with her." Alice paused. "I'm just calling you as a favor to her, so she'll stop calling me."

"Okay, so you kept your word and called me. Is there anything else you want?"

"You really should call mom and dad back, Edward." She huffed.

I rolled my eyes, turning on the ignition so I could turn on the AC. I was started to get hot just sitting.

"I'll call them when I ready. I have sent Mom text messages, so she knows I'm okay."

"A text message doesn't replace talking."

She was right but I didn't feel like hearing nor was I going to admit it to her.

"All right, is that all you wanted?"

"Yeah, that's all I wanted with your rude ass. You know El is right about you running away when conversations—"

"Yeah, whatever." I hung up on her.

I threw the phone on the passenger seat and drove off.

I should've taken my ass to my last class instead of skipping.

I could've avoided all the drama today.

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

I had stayed away long enough.

Even after what happened at Manny's I started calling her less, which was hard as hell.

I'd never admit this to anyone except Bella, but I'll call just to hear her voice from her voicemail recording.

If she ever changed it to the default one, I don't know what I would do.

I know I sound pathetic, but I don't care.

And that's exactly how I found myself sitting in front of Bella's house.

I let out a sigh of relief when I saw her car in the driveway.

There was no other unrecognizable car parked, so it was safe to assume she was home alone.

Time was running out, I had to fix this before she went back to school.

I couldn't win her back by staying away.

She's had enough time and space.

It's time for us to move on from this and get back to being us, Edward and Bella.

That was the last of my pep talk before I walked up and rang the doorbell.

You got this.

I smiled to myself as I looked down at my phone at a few of the text messages Emmett sent today.

By the time I finished reading his third message I looked up to ring the doorbell again, but I was met with eyes that looked very much like Bella's, but they weren't hers.

I had no idea how long he stood there watching me, slightly.

When did he even open the damn door?

Shit.

My Adam's apple bobbed up and down.

I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out.

Looking annoyed with my stupor, he narrowed his eyes. "Why are you here?"

I smiled nervously, scraping my hand through my hair. "Hi Charlie." I quickly looked away. His gaze was colder than a brass toilet seat in the Yukon. He didn't respond, so I continued. "Is… is Bella here?"

He shifted his weight and crossed his arms. "I'm going to ask you again, why are you here? His tone was sharp.

I was confused I thought it was apparent.

"To see Bella." I asked again. "Is she home?" My voice was pitchy.

His face was almost beet red.

I didn't miss the visible tension in his muscles.

"Listen and listen good because I will not repeat myself." He breathed through his nose. "Do. Not. Come. Back. Over. Here."

"But—"

He cut me off holding his hand up. "This isn't a debate, Edward. Bella told me everything." He paused as if giving me a minute to let that sink in. "It's taking everything in me not to beat the living hell out of you right now." His nostrils flared, as his fist clenched at his sides.

Damn!

My eyes bulged before I could control my expression.

I took a step or two back.

How was I supposed to respond to that?

It's not like he was that Grayson motherfucker or somebody else my age.

This was Bella's father.

I've done my shit, but I wasn't going to cross that line.

Besides, if it came down to it, I'm sure Charlie would give me a run for my money. He's as tall as I am and he's in good shape.

I'm already in the doghouse with Bella, there's no need to add more to it.

Dude what the hell are you thinking?

Get a grip, you're not fighting Charlie.

I furrowed my brow trying to figure out what to say. "Tha… that's why I'm here, sir. I wanted to apologize to her."

"Apologize?" His laugh was bitter. "You're kidding me, right?"

"Um… no."

"What a minute." He crossed his arms again. "You think saying you're sorry is going to cover the bullshit you did?" The question had to be rhetorical because he didn't wait for me to respond. "Do you know how it feels to have your daughter, your baby girl, sit in your lap and cry until she can't cry anymore? And there isn't a goddamn thing you can do about it?" He moved closer to me pointing his index finger to his chest. "I know exactly how that feels."

Crying?

I shook my head. "I'm sorry." I stuttered, struggling to find the right words.

"You're sorry." He studied me with a critical squint. "That's all little punks like you can say after you've done the fuckn damage." His lips curled with disgust. "Use these girls like they're yesterdays garbage, with no regard to what your games does to them. It doesn't matter to you because you got what you wanted, right?" He barked out.

My eyes blinked rapidly trying to process the way this usually quiet man was now up my ass.

I was numb.

My brain told me to get the hell outta there before he swung on me, but it felt like my feet were stuck in cement.

Once I came out of my sopor, I realized he had moved closer to me.

"Get the hell off of my property and don't bring your ass back over here, ever!" He pointed towards the street.

I took another step back, almost tripping down the steps.

After I gained my balance and jogged down the stairs, I walked to my car, quickly shutting the door behind me, while Charlie still stood on the porch watching me.

It looked like he wasn't budging from that spot until I pulled off.

Fuck!

I was so close too.

Was she home?

Did she send Charlie to the door avoiding me?

Nah, Bella wouldn't do that, not my Bella.

She's probably with Tanya.

Yeah… that has to be it, right?

I squeezed the steering wheel so hard my knuckled turned white.

Goddamnit!

Her silence was starting to fuck with my head.

It was throwing me off.

Why did it seem like everything and everyone was working against me today?

Why don't they understand I'm trying to make things right with her?

Fuck this.

I'm not letting another person get in the way of Bella and I getting back together.

I'm going for what's mine.
