Chapter 4 – Loss

When she woke up, they had her halfway home. She was on Mako-chan's back and it took her a few moments to figure out where she was. The gentle bobbing of Makoto's stride almost lulled her back to sleep. She saw him collapse and disappear. Her whole body had jolted causing Makoto to almost drop her. It took all four girls to keep her from trying to go back for him. They told her he was gone. They didn't know where and there was nothing any of them could do just then. They still had to practically drag her home. They got her up to her room, telling her mother that she wasn't feeling well. Rei had sent them all away and stayed with Usagi awhile longer. They were sitting on the floor with their backs against the bed.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about him," Usagi sobbed as Rei put her arm around her shoulders. "I just wanted something that was all mine. A secret, normal life. Something that had nothing to do with the Sailor Scouts." She buried her face in her hands and felt Rei rub circles across her back.

"I understand, Usagi," Rei said. "I'm so sorry. We will find him. I promise you." She rested her head on Usagi's shoulder. "Do you want me to stay here tonight?"

"No, I…no, it's alright."

Rei stayed a little while longer and left Usagi with strict instructions to clean herself up and get some rest. Usagi started the shower water and then stared at her swollen eyes and blotchy face in the mirror as she started to undress. She froze when she saw the blood. His blood. It had been on her hand and she had somehow gotten it on her chest. Her breath caught in her throat as her fingers touched his blood once more. She clutched the counter as she started hyperventilating. Her only thought was to get under the water before her family heard her uncontrollable sobs. She watched as his blood slowly swirled down the drain. "Mamo-chan," she whimpered. She pressed her hand against the side of the shower wall to steady herself as she heard him calling her Odango Atama. She could feel his hand moving from around her should down her arm to grasp her fingers through his. She could see his incredibly handsome face and that little smirk he reserved just for her. She could feel her heart thumping as his hands rested on her waist. As he lifted her onto a large horse and climbed on behind her. They were on a beach. The tide was coming in and she could just see a large castle in the distance. "Endymion," she sighed. She opened her eyes and blinked furiously. What was that? It wasn't her memory. Who was Endymion? Why did he look and feel like Mamoru? The girls had told her what happened. They told her that she was the Moon Princess. But they must be wrong. She turned the water off and reached for a towel. That had nothing to do with her. She was no princess. No one could confuse her for a princess.

She tried to get some rest as Rei had suggested, but she just laid there. And where was Luna? As if summoned by her thoughts Luna pushed the bedroom door open and hopped onto the bed.

"Usagi-chan, are you alright?" she asked. Usagi was about to answer when a beautiful blonde girl pushed the door open further.

"Hi," she said. "We didn't get to talk before, and I thought you might be feeling a bit lost."

"Lost? Yeah, I guess you could say that."

"I want to help you. What do you remember?"

Usagi sat up and clutched a pillow to her chest and looked into Mina's sympathetic eyes, "Remember from when?"

"From who we were before. Do you remember me?"

"No, I don't. I don't remember anything from 'before'. There was no 'before' as far as I'm concerned. What I remember is watching them take Mamoru and doing nothing. And I'm doing nothing now as well." Usagi stood and the pillow fell to the floor with a gentle thud. "What are we doing to find him?"

"Artemis and Ami are working on it right now. They'll find him. Right now, my concern is you."

"Me? I'm not in any danger. Mamo-chan is the one who-"

"Serenity," the blonde interrupted. Usagi felt goosebumps raise along her arms and behind her neck. "Serenity," he whispered as she stared into his beautiful eyes, his hand cupping her cheek. "Serenity," Sailor Mars murmured as she inclined her head. "Serenity," chastised Sailor Venus as she led her by the arm. "Serenity, Serenity, Serenity!" She heard the name over and over from an elegant woman in a flowing white gown, from Sailor Mercury across a glass table, a cook in a huge kitchen, a general in a room full of well dressed people, and over and over again from him. Whispered, laughed, moaned, sputtered, implored, and shouted. Endymion. Usagi gasped and fell to the floor grabbing her head.

"It's ok," Venus soothed as she took Usagi's shoulders. Usagi gasped and looked into Venus's eyes.

"Who is Serenity? I'm not Serenity. I'm Usagi, Usagi. Tsukino Usagi," she said pushing Venus away and standing.

"Usagi-chan," Luna said. "It's going to be alright. We'll figure this out together."

Usagi walked to the other side of her bed breathing shallowly. She sat down with her back to Venus as she started to speak again.

"Usagi. I'm so sorry. This wasn't the way I'd hoped to meet you this time around. I am Sailor Venus, leader of the Sailor Senshi. At least I was, before Sailor Moon. My name today is Aino Minako. But in the past, I was your closest companion. I was your protector. Your best friend. And everything that happened…it was my fault. I didn't stop you, and then… I didn't protect you." She took a shaky breath and Usagi felt her sit down on the bed behind her.

"When I remembered. It all came back to me so fast. It took a few days to decipher it all. I remember…so much. But the most important thing is you. Usagi, you are Serenity. You are my princess. And this time I will protect you. I've learned from these memories. I can be- I will be better this time." Minako stood and walked around to kneel in front of Usagi.

"Princess, please try to remember."

Usagi looked up from her hands in lap and stared over Minako's head. "Why? What will it matter? How will it help me now? What I need now is to find Mamo-chan." She finally looked into Minako's concerned eyes. "Can you help me do that?"

"Yes, I can. But I need you to try to remember. It will help. You need to remember Endymion. And his...his generals." She took Usagi's hands and squeezed gently. "Please, Usagi-chan. Please trust me. I can help you all to remember. And we can find Mamoru together."

Usagi's heart was pounding in her chest and tears were threatening to spill over once more.

"Why should I trust you," she asked, even though looking into Minako's eyes, she wanted to trust her. So badly.

"Because Usagi, I care about him too. I've never met Mamoru, but I knew Endymion well. I should never have known him, but I couldn't… I made so many mistakes, but I don't know that I could have done much different. Even with… You'll understand, I promise. I can help you. It's all I want to do."

"Usagi-chan," Luna said as she pushed her warm body against Usagi's side. Suddenly, she was so tired. So very tired. Just this morning she had no idea Mamoru was Tuxedo Mask, no idea she was the Moon Princess they had been looking for, no idea Sailor Venus would drop in claiming to know everything about her from a lifetime ago. No, this morning she was just a young girl, rattled by her near brush with death the night before, looking to find comfort in the arms of her almost sort of boyfriend. It was too much.

"Minako, I…" she moved her hands from under Minako's and shifted away from Luna, pulling her knees to her chest. "I'll talk to you tomorrow."

Minako stood and clasped her hands tightly in front of her stomach. "Of course. Usagi-chan. I'll see you tomorrow. All of the girls. We'll fix this, I swear it." She did an awkward half bow before biting her lower lip and retreating from the room. She looked over her shoulder one last time, swearing to herself that she would fix this.
