Chapter four: How much is too much?
"When you try your best, but you don't succeed/ when you get what you want but not what you need / when you feel so tired, but you can't sleep/ stuck in reverse." – Fix you; ColdPlay
I was so angry at Ironhide. Actually, ever since I have met him, I have been feeling angry. Ever since he entered my life everything has been going downhill for me. After I was fired, I got home and took my car. He tried to stop me and follow me, and I shouted at him to leave me alone for once. I blamed him for everything that has been happening and not once has he apologized.
That night I drove away from home with no destination in mind. I just drove and drove until I started to feel guilty. Once again, I started to punch the steering wheel. My wounds on my knuckles that were healing were now seeping through the bandages.
The following day I went back in town to look for a job. I went to every store and restaurants; most of them weren't hiring and some were but only for part times only. I didn't have that many options other than to take two part time jobs during the morning and evenings. Mom talked with Ironhide and came to agreement that he will take Danny to school in the mornings, and I would pick him up after my first shift.
Days turned to weeks when Colonel Lennox showed his face around my home. I tried to get him to take Ironhide back, but he wouldn't budge. Bumblebee is only available for certain hours and according to the Colonel, Ironhide needs to stay put until Optimus Prime comes back. Even then, there is still a big IF that he will return to N.E.S.T.
Every morning when I wake up, I see him outside with Daniel. They got into a habit of working out together to the point that I noticed that Ironhide was teaching him fighting moves. I took it up with my mom if she was okay with it. You know what this lady told me? "You're only looking for more excuses to hate him." The audacity of this woman.
I was in the porch sitting on one of the new benches that mom had Ironhide build. I had Rita sitting on my lap, petting her while talking to mom about our day. We watched Ironhide and Daniel play football with the dogs running back and forth, trying to participate in the game. We had a good laugh when Daniel tripped over one of the dogs who miraculously managed to move fast before Danny even made it to the ground.
Watching my mom watch them with a sad smile had me wondering if this is what she wished my brother would be doing if dad was alive.
"Remember when we used to camp?" she asked. I glanced at her, furrowing my brows, "We didn't camp? We did cookout at the parks."
She nodded, "Si,(yes) but we also had bonfires and play soccer."
I wanted to explain to her what camp means, instead I let it go and tried to see what she was heading with this, "I remember we laid on the blankets on the grass watching dad handle the grill." I was probably younger than my brother at that time in my life.
"Mirandolos jugar football me hace recordar esa vez cuando fuimos a camping. (Watching them play football reminded me of that one time we went camping.)" We watched Danny throw the brown and white football across the field, Ironhide ran far and jumped few inches into the air to catch it.
"No es una mala persona. (He is not a bad person.)" mom whispered next to me. I knew who she was talking about, I still had to ask, "Who?"
She gave me the 'you-know-who' look and pushed me playfully on my shoulder. I never said that he was a bad person, just that he knows how to make someone angry.
"Dile que puede usar nuestro sofa para dormir. (Tell him that he can use our couch to sleep.)" She offered the Autobot. I stop petting Rita to fully look at her this time, "I'll tell Danny to help move the couch to the barn." I half joked.
"Lily," mom warned, "no es un animal. (He is not an animal.)" That made me laugh a good throaty laugh. I missed laughing this hard.
Daniel heard me and raised his arms in the air as if asking what is going on. Mom waved with her finger to come over to the porch. Both came jogging the moment my mom calls upon them. If it was me though, they would drag ass.
"Mrs. Perez," Ironhide addressed her by the last name. I rolled my eyes, oh brother. Mom smiled, "Please, you can call me Tina." Tina was short for Agustina. Ironhide only nodded. I continued to pet Rita when mom placed a hand on my arm, "I would like to tell you something. Lily will translate." Then turned to look at me, "Dile lo que te dije. (Tell him what I told you.)"
I sighed in exasperation, "She is offering the living room couch for you to crash for the time being." Ironhide blue eyes meet mine for a brief second until he turned to look towards her. "Lily tell her this: she does not need a translator. I can fully understand her language and speak Spanish as well." Why did he not say that from the start? This whole time Danny and I have been translating.
"Woah, so you can speak more than one language?" Danny asked in awe. With the bottom hem of his shirt, he pulled it up to wipe the sweat off his forehead. Ironhide nodded, "Claro. (Of course.)" He responded clearly. He didn't have that accent like how some Americans do when they try to pronounce a word in Spanish.
"How?" Danny asked. Ironhide gave him his full attention this time, "By using the world wide web." He pointed his temple. Mom seemed pleased with his answer and to be honest I felt relieved too. Translating can be hard sometimes; you must be careful because some words in Spanish have different meanings in English.
"I appreciate the hospitality but that is not necessary." Ironhide told her in Spanish. He sounded so fluent when he spoke. My mom waved her hand at him, "Por favor, tomalo como agradecimiento. (Please, is a way to say thank you.)" Ironhide's jaw clenched slightly and nodded at her.
I started to get up, Rita flew down from my lap and rested on the porch. I needed to start to get ready for work. Daniel took my spot, sitting next to mom while they chatted with the Autobot. I noticed that they started to get too comfortable with him and I don't understand why. He is going to leave, not soon but he eventually will. Is he a distraction for them? Does he somehow helped them forget of our worries? Because I didn't. Or maybe because he somehow makes them feel safe. I think that could be it. Ever since he stepped foot in here, mom's guard has been slowly lowered down. She doesn't look over her shoulder as often as she did, my brother has been coming home happier and looking forward to have someone to play or spend time with.
To be honest, I don't even need to get ready for work. At my new job we are not required to wear uniform. I am just looking for an excuse to be away from Ironhide. I sat at the edge of my bed and stared at the sunset. I started to wonder where Optimus was and if he has found the seed yet. It has been too long now. If he had found the seed, then Ironhide would've been gone by now. His presence only confirms that no one hasn't heard or found him. With such advanced technology how is it hard to track him? Something is not right.
I shrugged it off. I wanted to help him find the seed. I'm just a human, how could I possibly help him? Maybe I should just focus on myself. I sighed and got up to leave. I made myself coffee to go and grabbed a bag of hot Cheetos on my way out. (I know, weird combination) I bid everyone goodbye as I hopped into my beat-up mustang and chased the sunset as I headed to work.
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Work is super slow today. Not a lot of people come to the movie theaters during the weekdays – or the weekends since this is a small town. Today I was assigned at the ticket window which I didn't mind because I got to see the sun go down. To pass the time I would read a book, go on TikTok, or watch a show. So far only three customers showed up, two of them being a date and a solo. I watched them go in, smiling. It has been a while since I had been on a date. I kind of miss being taken out once I awhile. The more I thought about it, people at my age have already settled down and started a family. I like to think that whatever it is meant to be it'll be but maybe I am not putting myself out there as much. How could I when I am too focused taking care of my own family.
I sat down on my stool, spinning myself around slowly. I noticed a group of teenagers coming to my window, a blonde girl with braces knocked on my window, "Can I get three tickets for the notebook?" Tonight showings were reruns, and the Notebook is usually a hit. I mean, who doesn't like Ryan Gosling?
While I was attending the group of teenagers, I couldn't help to noticed from the corner of my eyes a matte black Lamborghini parked at the opposite side of the street. It was maybe few cars down. The only reason it caught my attention was because we don't ever see fancy cars like that around here. People that live here are middle- or lower-class income and a car like that will take a lifetime to be able to afford it. I did find it suspicious, but I just brushed it off. For all I know, it could be one of those wealthy people looking into buying businesses here.
The car is nice though.
I jumped when I heard a knock behind me. I turned around and my supervisor peeked in, "Wanna trade places?" she asked with a smile. I smiled back, "Sure." I replied, grabbing my belongings. I looked one last time at the car when I noticed that it was gone. That was fast.
The remainder of my shift I chilled at one of the showings and cleaned up after the movie ended. Towards the end of the shift, I stayed behind with my supervisor as I had to be a witness as she counts the money that was made today and follow her to the bank. Once she was done with the deposits, we both headed towards different direction.
Lately when I would be driving, I haven't been listening to music like I used to. Tonight, I had my windows down and let the summer night caress my skin. I couldn't wait to get home, shower off the smell of popcorn and go to sleep. I waved my hand through the air as I had my other hand on the steering wheel. I could hear the crickets singing at this nighttime. I started to slow my car down to a complete stop at the stop sign. There was another car at another stop sign towards my right. I pressed on the gas since I stopped first and the moment I did that, the other car did too. I pressed on the brake hard and glared at the driver. I couldn't see who he or she was through the polarized windows, but I did recognize the car; Black matte Lamborghini.
The driver didn't move. I took that as their mistake, and I started to move once again when the person moved at the same time. This time the driver flashed at me with bright lights making me squint.
"What the hell is your problem?" I said to myself. Just when I was about to get out of my car, the Lamborghini went in reverse then pulled away speeding down the graveled road leaving a trail of clouds behind them. That was not weird at all.
Whatever.
I continued to drive my way home.
When I got home, I noticed our dogs were sleeping under Ironhides' truck and Rita nesting between the window and the hood. I leaned on the pillar and observed our property. I wasn't looking for anything in specific or anything out of the ordinary. It was more of making a mental image to keep in my memory how this place looks now; an 8.5-acre property that we call home filled with animals and vegetations. Where summer feels eternal, and winters are brutal. Dad would love this place. It is a shame that we are losing it. It is the sad truth to accept. I looked up at the sky that are covered with stars. It always leaves me breathless when I stargaze. I sat down on the steps and let my mind wonder for a while so I can forget all of my problems.
I wonder if we can see Cybertron from here?
My ears perked when I heard the boards creak from behind me. I glanced behind and squinted when the porch lights turned on. The door opened and Ironhide came out. He was wearing a pair of gray sweats and a black tank top that hugged his muscles.
"Hey," I greeted.
"What are you doing out here?" He asked. I rolled my eyes and turned to look back up at the sky, "Just chilling." I can still feel him standing by the door waiting for something. I made space for him next to me, "Join me, I don't bite." I invited, winking at him. He only stared at me until he finally did sit down next to me. I can feel the warmth radiating off from his skin. It almost made me want to lean into him just to stay warm.
We stargaze together quietly for a moment. For the first time I was able to enjoy his presence without being hostile.
"What is it like out there?" I asked, pointing at the sky, "In space? Is it vast and empty like scientist claim it to be?"
Ironhide looked at me briefly then his eyes shifted to the starry sky, "It's big," he answered quietly. I wanted to be a smart mouth, instead I just bit my lower lip and nodded. I did not want to ruin the moment that we were currently sharing.
"When I was younger, I used to wish to be part of the stars. I wondered what the universe looks like from close than from far." I fidget with my fingers, "Can we see Cybertron from here?" I asked curiously.
Ironhide searched in the sky when he pointed towards my right, "There," There are so many stars that it's hard to tell which one he is exactly pointing at.
I squinted my eyes to see clearer (because that makes so much sense). "That little one?" I asked, scrunching up my nose. Ironhide shook his head no when he placed a hand on my cheek to move to a side then with the same hand placed it under my chin to lift my face up to see what he was seeing, "You see that star that is glowing in the shade of purple?" I scanned the sky when I spotted the star he described. The star was big and bright, twinkling in the shade of purple.
"Wow," I breathed, "I have never seen a planet twinkling in that color. Has it been there before?" I thought out loud. I have seen other stars shining in yellow, red or even white before but we would shrug it off as being satellites, planes or drones.
"It has been there for over a decade." I looked at him when he answered, eyebrows furrowed, "So it hasn't been there before, then?"
"It has been there since the battle of Cybertron when Sentinel betrayed us." Ironhide said. This reminded me what Optimus said the day I last saw him, " 'Betrayed by few that we thought were our friends.' " I quoted the leader, "That is what he told me the day before he left. That your team was outnumbered by the Decepticons."
Ironhide eyes dimmed for a brief second, "It was not entirely the Decepticons. It was Sentinel Prime whom betrayed Optimus. All of us."
Sentinel Prime, never heard of that name before. Is he somehow related to Optimus? They do share the same last name. "Who is Sentinel Prime?" I asked this time.
"He was Optimus's mentor and once, a friend." My eyes widened at Ironhide's answer. His own friend betraying him, "Why would he betray you guys?"
The weapon specialist shrugged his shoulder when his whole body started to glitch just how Optimus did when he neared his semi. I watched in awe when his hologram disappeared, and his truck started to transform. The sound of mechanical shifting, joints connecting, hums and whirring coming from all directions. The atmosphere felt electrifying. This is the first time in weeks that I got to meet Ironhide's true form; he wasn't as tall as Optimus, probably a head shorter than him if not more and definitely bulkier with a cannon attached on one of his arms. I noticed that one of his eyes had a scar from past fights. He used his headlights from his shoulder to light in front of me, somehow projecting a different timeline.
The scene in front of me was very familiar. I recognized this place, the battle zone that was shown on tv numerous times about thirteen years ago reminding us why we shouldn't trust Transformers. I saw Optimus chasing after another Transformer and abruptly body slammed him into a bridge, sparks flying everywhere.
The red Transformer came to a crawl, "Always the bravest of us, but you could never make the hard decisions!" he snapped at Optimus. The Transformer slowly started to get up as he dodged away Optimus aim, bringing his shield forwards and his blade, "Our planet will survive!"
Suddenly Optimus opponent inserted his blade-like into Optimus shoulder, ripping it off. I cringed, shutting my eyes close. This was too intense to watch. The Cybertronian kicked Optimus down, mercilessly beating him, "We were gods once, all of us! But here…" Optimus tried to reach up for him, "Please," he begged only to be kicked down again.
"There can only be ONE!" The red Cybertronian shouted as he raised his lance once more and aim at Optimus back.
Out of nowhere I heard a shot coming from the background. Another Silver Cybertronian came in running with his weapon pointing at the red Cybertronian, shooting at him. The silver Cybertronian came running at him then pulled him by the shoulder-like tossing him to the bridge, "This is MY planet!" he roared and started to pull the red Cybertronian apart.
The silver Cybertronian dragged the red one across like nothing and let him crawl away as he stance towards Optimus, "Now, we need a truce." The Cybertronian stated, "All I want is to be back in charge. Besides, who would you be without me, Prime?"
"Time to find out." Optimus answered, sliding his mouthguard over and reaching for his weapon to aim at the silver Cybertronian.
As the silver Cybertronian fell to the floor, there was light blue liquid spiling. At this point I knew that it is energon. The silver Cybertronian groaned and moaned as Optimus pulled his head off from his shoulder and threw it to the ground with the axe attached on top of the scalp.
The other Cybertronian was on all fours, trying to push himself up, "Optimus, all I've ever wanted was the survival of our race. You must see why I had to betray you." So, this is who Sentinel was. Optimus picks up the dead Cybertronian's gun, "You didn't betray me," he cocks the gun and then points it at Sentinel, "you betrayed yourself."
Sentinel realized what is about to happen when Optimus pulled the trigger and blasted at him, "NO, OPTIMUS!" The leader shot Sentinel on his back, then flipped him over to shoot him in the head, killing him. Optimus observed his surrounding; buildings destroyed, cars on fire, people rushing for safety. I could hear the familiar engine running and a group of men in black walking back to the bridge. I recognized Lennox in the group of men.
The battle scene slowly started to disappear, bringing me back to reality. Ironhide was behind me, so I turned around to face him, looking up, "Your government has kept a secret about the Ark – a Cybertronian spacecraft carrying an invention that was capable of ending the war between Autobots and Decepticons. This Ark crash landed on the dark side of Earth's moon.
"There was another mission at Chernobyl Nuclear disaster site to investigate a suspected alien technology. When Optimus and I were there, we were attacked by a Decepticon named Shockwave. We came to learn that there was a fuel cell from the ark along with the seed, and we weren't sure if Shockwave happen to find it at the same time as we did or if he was guarding it." Ironhide explained. I had to sit back down on the steps, my neck was hurting from looking up. The weapon specialist has explained the story from the battle of Chicago, why they were on the run, who was the Decepticon that he killed on the bridge besides Sentinel, friends they have lost and gained along the way. He explained how Optimus used the energy of the Matrix of Leadership to revive Sentinel only to end up being betrayed at the end. I learned that Galvatron is Megatron reincarnated, and plotting to use the remaining seed from Battle of Chicago and Transformers drone to conquer the world.
I rested my palms on the steps, "All this just for one seed? Why bring Cybertron here? Why can't they take it somewhere else?" I asked.
"Because those planets are destroyed." He answered simply, "Decepticons had taken the seeds to other planets to bring Cybertron and start a new race. It didn't work because the life on that said planet could not support it."
"And how is earth any different?" What if our planet cannot support their life either?
"Because it has happened before." I was surprised by his answer. When did it happen? I don't think I have ever heard of species trying to take over, it would have been on a textbook. I scoffed, "I don't believe it."
"Of course you don't. How old do you think your planet is?" He genuinely asked me. I shrugged my shoulder, "I don't know like billion years old."
"4.543 billions years old." I can see judgement in his eyes for not knowing my home planet age. "How old is Cybertron, then?" I argued back.
Ironhide wrapped his arm-like across his chest, "Past twelve millions." I raised my eyebrow at his answer. Earth is older than Cybertron? So, because Earth is older, they believe is more evolved and stronger. Of course they want to take a planet that has been around longer than others. We have water, air, wind, and fire. Things that no other planets have and if they did, it is only few elements. "With the seed merging Cybertron here will only accelerate the growth of a new race." I thought out loud, "While wiping out the old ones."
Jeez, so much for letting my mind wonder. This is the type of information that I do not want to take to bed. It'll only keep my mind running. Why is the government okay with this? Why can't they protect their own race, us? The more I ask, the more questions I have, and I am sure as hell that few will be left unanswered. How could my family survive if the Seed ends up in the wrong hands? I need to think ahead and make plans. It is better to be safe than sorry.
I stood up this time, "Could I ask you for a favor?" I licked my lower lip, not sure what I am really asking for. I guess when I get worried, I think of the worst-case scenario. Ironhide nodded, "Sure."
"If…If something were to happen to our home or me – would you please keep my family safe?" He had the right to say no. He could laugh at my face and tell me how our lives are not worth saving. The weapon specialist eyes glowed when he kneeled to my level, his blue eyes making my skin glow. I could see all the scratches and dents from here. I wanted to reach out and touch his scar across his eye and ask how he got that. His eyes trailed my body making me feel exposed, "You are afraid." He pointed out. I laughed, "Who wouldn't be?"
Ironhide nodded at my response, "Liliana, as long as I am around you should not be afraid. I won't let anything happen to you or your family." He promised.
I looked at him in the eyes, my eyes watering as I got emotional. Without thinking I threw myself at him, hugging his head. I can feel him tense up for a moment until he brought a finger to pat my back in comfort.
All of a sudden, we heard a thunderous engine sound coming from somewhere far. I recognized that sound from anywhere. Ironhide stood his ground, "Get inside the house." He ordered. I glared at him, placing a hand on my hip, "You for real? That's Optimus!" I announced, as the noise got louder. I ran towards the front entrance to open the gate for him. I don't know why I felt so excited to see him again.
"Wait!" Ironhide called out, yet I chose to ignore him. Farewell, bonding moment. The dogs ran behind me and started to bark when the red and blue semi got closer. I took the chains off the gate and pulled it open, allowing the leader to come through.
"Optimus!" Ironhide greeted, following him. Optimus came to a complete stop before he started to transform in front of me. I watched in awe as he transformed to his complete form before my eyes.
"Ironhide, my old friend." He greeted, clapping his shoulder. Watching them is like watching fireworks go off in the sky and feeling breathless at how amazing and unrealistic they are. Two sentient beings in my yard that somehow managed to blend with humanity for years.
"We have been looking for you, where have you been?" Ironhide asked his leader.
"I was looking for this," Optimus pulled his arm up to show him what was in there.
"Is that the seed?" I asked, curiously. Ironhide was kind enough to place his hand down to the ground and indicated for me to sit. I sat in between his thumb and index finger, my butt feeling cold underneath me. My legs dangled over, and I held on to his thumb for support. It is not like he would drop me it just felt like an instinct to grab onto something. I was high up, gulping since I am scared of height.
"Lily," Optimus greeted with a slight bow. I saw the seed in his hand; that thing looked to be about the size of my arm and heavy, yet it looked small in his hand. I noticed hieroglyphics imprinted on each side.
"This is the seed that we have been looking for." Optimus finally answered. All this death and war for that piece. A piece that is capable to wipe out humanity.
"May I?" I pointed at the seed, asking permission if I can touch it.
Optimus allowed me to look at it closer. Ironhide at first didn't budge to move when I threated to jump from his grasp to Optimus hands. The weapon specialist rolled his eyes and hissed in annoyance. Optimus brought his hand closer so I can see better. There it was the seed. I moved from Ironhide's hand to Optimus and kneeled next to the seed. Slowly I traced the crevices and the texture of the seed, how it felt cold under my touch. I could hear the Cybertronians talk about where the Leader has been and where have they been staying. The weapon specialist catches him up to speed from the moment I was taken to where N.E.S.T. has been staying and what they know so far. I scoffed when he skipped the part of him drugging me.
"Something the matter, pup?" Ironhide called me out. I sat on my butt and glanced at the specialist, "You forgot to tell him about you sedating me and blew up the main entrance of my house."
"Those details are not important." He said. I gasped at him, I almost wanted to throw my shoe at him. "You're right, it is alarming. Optimus, were you aware how sadist Ironhide is?"
This time Ironhide gasped, "Liliana, I am anything but a sadist." He defended. I could see his eyes changing colors from blue to red.
"Again, you are right. You are airheaded jerk." Before he could snap, Optimus brought up his other free hand, "Enough, Ironhide." Ending our banter.
"She started!" he pointed with a finger. I stuck my tongue at him when the leader defended for me, "Ironhide can be mindless at a times. Please forgive my friend." Optimus apologized for the weapon specialist. The fact that he called him mindless made me want to laugh, yet seeing how angry Ironhide was getting I decided to bite my lower lip and hold my laughter.
We focused on the seed. It turned out that the seed was hard to find, Optimus had to travel to California to retrieve it. It did take a long time to track it down, but he finally got a hold of it. During his mission, he did come across with another Cybertronian named Lockdown and got into a fight with him.
"Is Lockdown a Decepticon?" I asked amidst of their conversation.
Ironhide shook his head, "He is a Cybertronian assassin and bounty hunter."
"Why is Lockdown after you, Optimus?" I looked up at the leader, whose blue glowing eyes dimmed, "I am not sure as to why he is after me. I can only assume is that he is also after the seed."
Everyone is after the seed. I worried now that he has found it and brought it here it will attract unwanted visitors.
"Ironhide, we need to find a place to hide the seed for the time being." Optimus said. Ironhide nodded his head, "On it," and transformed back to his vehicle mode. Optimus hand moved down to the ground, letting me hop off. I thought about my barn, maybe he can hide it there for the time being.
"How about the barn?" I pointed behind the house. Both mechs considered the barn, analyzing whether it is a good idea or not. "There is small room under ground where you can hide the seed. It'll be out of sight. I can show you?" I offered.
Optimus and Ironhide followed me to the barn, and I showed them the hiding spot. Before entering, both mechs human form activated while I removed the dusty carp that covered the wide door. Ironhide came to my side and opened the door for me since it was stuck. I don't know why this place even existed to begin with, whoever lived here before us had some sort of bunker underneath that was all dark, cold, and musty. Wasn't even safe to use as a tornado shelter.
"What do you think?" Optimus asked Ironhide as he held the seed in his arms. If the seed was heavy, Optimus didn't show it.
"Good enough for me. It will only be temporary until Lennox arranges transportation to Diego Garcia." Ironhide pointed out. Who is Diego Garcia? I didn't want to ask them this time or interrupt their conversation as they thought of a plan. Optimus carefully placed the seed inside the bunker then closed the door. I brought the tarp back covering the door. Rita appeared out of nowhere and claimed her spot on top of the bunker, as if protecting it from any intruders.
"I will call Lennox and inform him to meet us back at our rendezvous point." Ironhide left the barn leaving me alone with Optimus. I dusted my hands on my jeans and yawned. I was getting tired, I should probably start heading inside.
I turned to Optimus, smiling to see his familiar face. I noticed that his beard grew out fast and the tired look in his eyes, "you are more than welcome to come inside and sleep." I offered. He shook his head, a smile firm on his lips, "You have done enough, Lily. Thank you." I only nodded and bid him goodnight.
I walked back outside where I saw Ironhide get into his truck. I wasn't sure whether to wave him goodbye, I wanted to ask if he was coming inside later. Instead, I just minded my business and go inside.
Part of me hoped he would come inside too.
XXXXXXXXXX
The following morning I was woken up by the sound of loud noises and smell of delicious food. The loud noises had me groaning in annoyance, grabbing the side ends of the pillow to cover my ears. I can hear muffled voices coming from outside of my bedroom and someone shouting. This reminded me when my dad used to cut the grass on Saturday mornings, waking the whole block up. Luckily no one complained at that time.
There was a loud knock on my bedroom door, mom didn't wait for me to say something before she stuck her head in, "Lily, levantate! (Get up!) I need help in the kitchen." Mom said, leaving the door open when she left. That is one of the things that I always hate; she would knock on the door obnoxiously and barge in like a cop coming after someone with a warrant.
I let go of the pillow edges and rested my arms across my eyes. I want to stay in bed and sleep, I'm too tired. I tried to block out the noises and snoozed again when I heard my mom shout from downstairs making me jump from my bed. Just couple more hours, I told myself, then at the end of the day I can go back to bed.
I got up to wash up and brush my teeth. I came back to my room and debated to stay in my pajamas when I finally decided to change since I will be going to work in couple of hours. I end up wearing a pair of jeans, leaving a tank top on with a plaid over it. I could hear more muffled voices coming from the yard when I peeked over and noticed that half of the N.E.S.T team are here with the Autobots. I squinted when I saw Optimus with Lennox, Ironhide and Ratchet walking towards the barn.
They're probably going to analyze the seed. I almost forgot about the seed, I hope they remove it from here today or sometime soon. I can't help to feel a numbing, tingling feeling on my chest for some reason. I placed a hand on my chest as if that would relieve that feeling. Out of nowhere, Ironhide looked up to my room our eyes meeting. My breath hitched for a second, sending butterfly feeling on my stomach. I quickly moved away, the room suddenly feeling warm. I shook the feeling off and focused on myself by grabbing my hair into a messy hair bun and doing a quick touch up on my face.
Finally, I went down the kitchen where my brother and Bumblebee sitting by the table talking amongst themselves and my mom pouring freshly brewed coffee on clean mugs.
"Ve y ofreceles café, (go and offer them coffee)" mom handed me two mugs.
"Optimus and Ironhide don't drink coffee, mama." I told her. She raised an eyebrow at me then looked at Bumblebee for some sort of confirmation, "We do not consume human food," the scout confirmed in Spanish. Mom nodded and put them aside, "Entonces no los tomamos nosotros. Pero llevale al Señor Lennox. (We'll take these two then and just take one to Lennox.)" She insisted. Mom is always hospitable; whenever we have guests over, she always offers something to eat and drink even if it's something small.
I grabbed my mug and Lennox's. The front door was wide open and walked towards the barn. Some men had tables set up with laptops and tabloids. I quickly glanced at one of the screens and saw some sort of maps displayed. Another one I saw headshots of Cybertronians, a familiar face that had his name shown on top in big bold letters: MEGATRON.
Megatron was the one who Optimus killed in the Battle of Chicago. I couldn't help but to notice that his status was unknown. One of the men noticed that I was lurking and closed out the screen. I blushed in embarrassment and kept on walking towards the barn.
Why was Megatron status unknown? Maybe I could ask Optimus. He is the one that can confirm whether he is dead or not.
"Knock knock." I tapped the barn door with the tip of my shoe. Lennox and the three Cybertronian looked up from their conversation. The seed was taken out from the 'bunker' and placed on top of the door. I headed towards Lennox and handed him his coffee, "Complimentary from my lovely mother." He took the mug and thanked me with a smile.
"Lily," Optimus greeted, and Ratchet nodded at me. I greeted back at them by raising my mug, "Morning everyone."
"Liliana, thank you for allowing us to hide the seed here." Ratchet said as he stood up from where he was, examining the seed.
"It's the least I could do." I told them, taking a sip of my warm coffee.
"You did not have to do anything." Lennox said from next to me, "We do appreciate any help we can get." He placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it lightly. I shrugged my shoulder and smiled at them, a way of saying you're welcome.
"What's with the G.I. Joe's squad?" I pointed behind me. I could feel Ironhide's eyes on me for a brief moment until he focused on the seed, like it was the most important thing in the room. (Because it is)
"Planning for our departure." Lennox said after his first sip of coffee.
"We are departing tonight." Ratchet announced, as he stood by his leader, "Now that Prime is back, we need to get going." Now I understand why Ironhide focused his attention on the seed. I can feel myself frowning and my throat tightening.
"That is…good news, right?" I ignored my emotions and focused my attention to Lennox who only nodded, "Yes ma'am, good news for you. For all of us means that we need to find a way to transport it to Diego Garcia."
Ironhide finally spoke up, "The scout suggested about having Stratosphere transport supplies." He announced to the group. A part of me feel that I should be mad at him right now because he was leaving tonight which meant that the promise he made last night won't be accomplished. I should've known not to hold on to false hopes.
"Yes, but Stratosphere can only transport smaller 'bots." Ratchet pointed out and Optimus nodded, resting his thumb and index finger on his chin as he thought about another plan. I didn't want to hear them what they were going to do, instead I excused myself and turned around to leave them alone.
I should focus on my life now that things will go back to normal. I should be happy that they are leaving, yet…I'm not. I dumped my coffee outside of the barn and walked back to the house. I could see my mom attending to the men outside, offering them baking goods to go along with their drinks.
I don't like my mind right now. I can hear all these negative thoughts, wanting to stop my mom to stop serving them, telling me that we are getting abandoned once again. I tried to tell myself that this was only temporary and should have seen it coming. The team was looking for their leader, he came back with the seed, and it is time for them to move on to protect our humanity from extinction. However, the fact that Ironhide made a promise hurts. We were in a vulnerable moment last night, and sometimes we say things to comfort ourselves. He is a Cybertronian, he may not understand human emotions so I shouldn't be mad at him.
I just can't help to feel petty. I can feel my energy draining as I allowed the negative thoughts consume me. For godsake, I am an adult! Am I really going to throw a tantrum?
I felt a warm hand touch my elbow. I turned around and met with the weapon specialist, "Liliana," he whispered my name, his dark eyebrows furrowed as he scanned my face. I forgot he can read emotions with just a simple look.
I forced a smile, "What's up?"
"I – I'm sorry," he apologized. This was the first time I hear him apologize and sounded so sincere. I kept a smile on my face, "Sorry for what?"
He gave me a 'you-know' look, as if he doesn't want to say it. He could be apologizing for anything and I wanted him to say it. He looked away from me for a minute, annoyed then looked back with his intense blue eyes, "For leaving." Just hearing it coming from him made my heart skip a beat. I tried to focus my attention on something else, on anything, but my eyes just shift back to his. I wanted to frown; my eyes started to sting. I need to get away because if I stay here with him, I know I will start to cry. This feeling is worse than a breakup.
I am not strong, and I hate myself for that. Crying won't get me anywhere.
I managed to pull myself together and pretend that there are no hard feelings, "Come on 'Hide, it's not like you're bound to stay here forever." I told him, punching him playfully on his strong shoulder. The weapon specialist gave me a confused look, "But, last night –" I raised my hand to stop him from repeating of last night promise, "You're an Autobot. Your leader is found, and the seed needs to be protected at all costs. I'm the least of your concern." I walked backwards trying to escape from this conversation, "Liliana," he repeated my name again.
"It's okay, really." I said, "I promise." And walked away. I had to remind myself to walk and not run otherwise he will know that I'm not okay.
I heard my mom calling for me, but I ignored her. I don't want to be here when they leave. With that being said, I started to get ready for work and left home without saying goodbye to anyone.

To say that the day went by fast is an understatement. My first shift went pretty smoothly and kept myself busy. At my second shift, it felt as if time was moving slowly. At first, I hated it and now I enjoy it. My mind can't help but to wonder if the N.E.S.T team left and if my parents were alone until when my brother sent me a text of a frown emoji. That was the only clue that I needed to know that they are gone.
When my brother sent the text I promised him that I will bring a box of popcorn to cheer him up.
Danny: make it extra large pls *grinning emoji*
Me: *rolling eyes emoji*
Some siblings love to take advantage of the older ones. Who am I to say no to a thirteen year old?
Today I was handling tickets by the window. We only had couple of people coming in to watch reruns and new premiers. During that time, I couldn't help but to notice black SUVs cruising around town. One drove by my workplace slowly then sped up. I found it weird, and I started to have a strange gut feeling. Something told me that I had to go home. I tried to shrug off the feeling and told myself that it was nothing, I'm over thinking things. Plus, I was tired. I can't wait for this day to be over and to go to bed. I had one more hour to kill and tomorrow will be a new day.
I stayed focused and minded my business. I should start planning for my future and consider of maybe moving out of here, go to a different town closer to the city, maybe apartments would be cheaper. We could sell our farm animals and have the bank buy off our home for whatever they think it is worth. We can use that money and be stable for a year if not for a couple of months. I know mom will be so against it and it will take a lot of convincing. It's for the best.
When my shift was over, I was glad that I didn't have to stay behind this time and follow my manager to the bank. We all said our goodnights and went to our separate ways. I walked towards the back of the building where employees are allowed to park. Even thought it was nighttime, from the corner of my eyes I was able to notice the matte black SUV parked across the street. I can tell that the SUV was turned on because of the back taillights were bright red. The passenger doors opened and men starting to come out and head towards my direction. I started to panic and tried to unlock the door of my car, cussing myself for locking it in the first place.
"Hey!" one of the men in black called out. I didn't bother to look and jumped inside of the car, turning the engine off and took off without a second waste. The tires screeched when I pulled out from the parking lot and cars honked at me when I blew past the stop sign. I fidget through my messenger bag fishing out my phone to call mom.
My hands were shaking, and my mind was racing. What if they got to them? I had a hard time to unlock my phone and dialed my mom. The line rang and rang, she didn't answer. From the rearview mirror I can see bright headlights coming from behind me, the same men trying to catch up to me. I took the backroads, hoping to lose them and dialed Danny this time.
He picked up after the first ring, "'Sup sis," I could tell he was distracted since he wasn't completely paying attention. I can hear a theme song playing in the background indicating that he was playing online.
"Danny, oh my god you answered!" I nearly cried.
"Uh, why wouldn't I?" He asked, confused.
I shook my head, "Never mind that, listen. Get mom and turn all the lights off okay,"
"Why?" he interrupted, sounding a little more alert this time.
"Just listen to me Danny!" I shouted urgently, "I think I am being followed. Whatever you do, do not open the door to anyone. Where is mom?"
"Outside with her animals I think – oh shit." He cussed. My heart started to race, "What is it?" I asked, panicked. I heard people on the background shouting to lay on the ground.
"Danny!" I shouted over the phone as if I could get his attention. I can hear him shouting what was happening and something break in the background.
"Ms. Liliana," a man said on the other line, "I am assuming that you are coming home."
I could only stare at the screen as I drove. I felt my blood run cold knowing that someone broke into my house, "You got two minutes to get here before I start shooting," he threated and hung up. My phone slipped from my hand as I stepped on the gas going as fast as the mustang could take me. I blew through all the stop signs and traffic lights, nearly causing accidents. At this very moment, my mind remains blank as I drove home.
Who is that man and what does he want? I can feel my teeth chattering even though it wasn't cold. I was scared and nervous.
Finally, I arrived home. The front gate was broken down, I could see the dogs barking at the men who had my mom and Danny outside the house with their hands behind their heads as if they were some sort of criminals. I can feel anger building up in my chest, my fist tightening. No one treats my family like this.
I turned off the car and got out. I walked towards who I believe is the leader of this group of men who had guns pointing at my family. I noticed couple of other men walking inside of the house and another group heading towards the barn.
"Liliana Dalia Perez," a man dressed in all black and gray hair said my full government name, "Who are you?" I asked him, "And why are your men pointing guns at my family?"
Sucking his teeth, "I ask the questions here, darlin'." He answered.
"Point the guns away from my family," I told him angrily, "Or I won't answer to anything." The man only scoffed and gave their men one simple look so they can lower down their weapons.
I ran towards my mom, hugging her. I can see fear in their eyes.
"These tire marks," the man pointed to the ground, "tells me you had visitors here." I looked at him, understanding what he was implying.
"Who are you?" I asked again.
"I already told you that I ask the questions,"
"Well, you are not really asking. You're just blabbering." I told him.
"Are you with the cops?" My brother asked, trying to sound tough even though deep down I know he was scared.
The man only chuckled, "No son, not with the cops. However, a concerned citizen made a report of possible Cybertronian paying a little visit." His cold eyes meeting my brown eyes.
"Who?" I asked, confused. Who could've reported us? I don't think it was Danny, I drilled him many times to keep his mouth shut. My mom knows better too.
"It doesn't matter who. Where is Optimus Prime?" He asked, getting to the point. It clicked to me that he was with the government, the ones going after the Autobots.
I licked my lower lip, "I don't know who you are talking about," I lied. He only laughed to himself, "You want to head that direction? Don't play fool with me if you know what's good for you."
"I said what I said," I stood my ground and pretended that I didn't know who he was talking about. The man moved towards me and pulled me by the elbow, "listen sweetheart, my patient is low. If you want to play games with me, you will get hurt." He dragged me towards the gravel area where the tire marks are more visible, "See these marks here," he flashed with his flashlights, "Those are tire marks from a semi,"
"Those are from the tractor," I pointed towards the crop field.
"Don't be a smart ass with me," his grip on my elbow tightened. I tried to pull away but he would not let me go, "Where is Optimus?" he asked again.
I looked at him in the eyes, he had the same piercing lifeless blue eyes. He had a menacing look and took no shit from anyone. He was someone you don't want to mess with, "You need a warrant." I told him. He glared at me until he started to force a laughter then pulled me closer to him, "Darlin' my face is the only warrant that you need." He growled, "I will ask you one last time, where is Optimus Prime?"
I debated whether to answer his question honestly. My family safety is on the line and I am seriously debating this.
"No le dijas nada a estos cabrones, Lily! (don't tell these fuckers anything, Lily!" mom shouted. The man glared at her, "Take them down!" he instructed his men.
"What?" I gasped as he pulled me back to my mom and Danny.
"Let her go!" Danny shouted as one of the men grabbed mom and pushed her down to the grass.
"Stop!" I told the man.
"Shut up!" The other man snapped at Danny as he pushed him down to the grass.
"They don't know about Optimus! I do, just let them go!" I begged the man. He abruptly stopped and looked down at me, straight in the eyes, "What kind of person betrays their flesh and blood brethren for alien metal?" He asked, belittling me. I couldn't answer his questions, I didn't know how. Instead he just pushed me to another man, "Get her out of my sight," he ordered.
"Let them go! They don't know about Optimus, I swear!" I shouted and begged at them as I was dragged towards my family.
"All right! Load up and search the perimeter!" The man ordered.
The man pushed me and pulled me by the shirt as I tried to fight him back, "What the fuck is wrong with you, manhandling women? I'll kick your ass!" I punched his chest pushing him off, "What kind of man treats older woman like this!"
"Let my mom go!" Danny shouted as he managed to get away from one of the men holding him back. He ran towards mom only to get tackled down to the ground.
"Let him go!" I shouted.
"You're not going anywhere," the man pulled me back then tossed me to the ground, lying flat on my stomach. I can feel someone's knee on my back when the man with the gray hair came back to me again, this time his gun pointing at my head, "You got ten seconds, where is Optimus Prime?"
The rest of his men pulled their guns out again and pointed at my families' head. I can see my mother crying and my brother struggling to move, both of them telling me the same thing not to say a word. They are willing to die for the Autobots to give them freedom.
"Would you shoot my brother and my mother?" I growled angrily.
"If I have to." He answered simply with a small smile on his face.
I couldn't believe this man, "Look, I don't know. I told you everything that I know. He is gone." Which was the truth. I begged and pleaded with him. I could see my mother crying and my brother fighting for his life, shouting to let us go.
"If you touch them, I will kill you," I threatened the man which only made him angrier. He cocked his gun and pulled the trigger aiming for the ground next to my head, "Two seconds," the man warned. My hears were ringing, making it difficult to focus.
"Please," I begged.
"Shoot them," he instructed. My life flashed before my eyes very slowly. The men aimed their guns at their heads ready to pull the trigger. I started to apologize to them as mom told us that she loved us at the same time. They were going to die because of me. This is all my fault.
If I could take it back…
I shut my eyes close and waited for the impact when suddenly we heard explosions coming from the background distracting the men. I quickly pushed myself off the ground and ran towards my mom, helping her get up. Daniel came to our side and started to run away from these dangerous men.
"Here I am!" Optimus roared out of nowhere as he busted through the barn, all the debris and bullets flying from every direction. Was he here this whole time? Daniel pushed mom and I down to the ground, behind our tree to avoid getting hit.
"We need to get out of here!" Mom shouted. We heard another roaring engine coming from the distance. Daniel stood up from the ground to see who it was, "It's 'Bee!" he pointed excitedly. The yellow Camaro pulled in front of us with the passenger door already open. We helped my mom get up and get to the back seat safely.
"The seed!" Optimus shouted, "Someone get the seed!" I turned around as he tried to cover the now destroyed barn from the men that attacked us. There was no one around here to get it for him.
I could get it.
"Get in the car," I told my brother.
"Where are you going?" he asked, looking at me with his big brown eyes. I leaned inside the car to speak with the Scout, "Get them to safety."
"Lily, what are you doing?" Daniel panicked.
"Liliana!" mom shouted as I closed the door. If these men don't kill me, my mom will when I see her. I ran towards the barn as fast as I could. I dodged and ducked away from all the flying bullets. Optimus saw where I was going, "I'll cover you!" he shouted. I only nodded and made myself through the rumbles of wood and rocks. I pulled pieces of wood where I think the 'bunker' is and started to pull them apart. I can feel the splinter poking through my skin but at this point the adrenaline had me forget any pain. I can feel myself breathing fast and adrenaline pumping though my veins.
From behind I heard explosions. The house went into shambles as two explosives went off. Our home is now gone. I focused and pulled the wooden door open and reached for the seed. The thing was heavy. I managed to pull it out and started to run towards Optimus, "I got it!" I yelled as loud as he could. Another explosive went off behind him making him lose his balance and do a summersault. I fell flat on my back, my head hitting something hard making my vision blurry and blacking out. The ringing in my ear was only getting worse and everything around me felt as if it was moving slow. Dirt, pebbles, branches, and bullets flying at every direction. My body felt as if it wanted to give out right now when a familiar face covered my view. I can see his mouth moving yet I couldn't really hear what he was saying.
"Get up!" The weapon specialist shouted as he pulled me by the shirt. He grabbed the seed from me as we ran towards his truck helping me in and placed the seed on my lap. Optimus started to transform back to his semi and took off with us following him.
"Are you hurt?" Ironhide asked in a hurry. I slowly looked at him then at myself, am I hurt? I shook my head no without inspecting my body.
"Who are those men?" I asked, my voice sounding horsed.
Ironhide clenched his jaw as his hands gripped tighter on the steering wheel, "They are CIA black-Ops. Savoy is a general, the one who leads operation Cemetery Wind."
"Cemetery Wind?" I questioned.
He nodded, "Initially they were created to hunt down and eradicate any remaining Decepticons. They went rogue and secretly hunting Autobots behind the government's back."
My fist balled; they are the ones that are hunting my friends. "They threatened my family." I remembered how Savoy ordered his men to shoot us.
"He is a ruthless serial killer." Ironhide stated. The very first chance that I get I will kill him. I don't care how long it will take; I will kill him with my barehand. That is a promise.
"Ironhide," Optimus spoke through the radio, "Lockdown is here." I looked at Ironhide. Lockdown was the bounty hunter that was going after the leader from his last mission.
"Frag," Ironhide cussed, "Where are you?"
"I'll send you my location."
Suddenly, Ironhide slammed on the breaks hard that caused me to jerk forward, "Buckle up," he instructed. I reached for the seatbelt and held on to the seed so it won't fall to the floor. Ironhide pressed on the pedal making the tires squeal and jerked the truck around to drive the opposite direction. We drove through town when we had the Black-Ops following us. The passenger window from the SUV lowered down when I saw Savoy glaring at us, at me specifically. I know he can't see me through Ironhide's polarized window, but I can see him.
Ironhide pressed on the gas pedal as he picked up speed to lose them, "Hold on," he warned when I noticed that he was driving through a building.
"Oh my god, Are you crazy!" I shouted as he slammed through the windows making me shut my eyes close waiting for some sort of impact. I peeked through the back window where I can see people getting up from the ground trying to recover. Ironhide managed to find the highway and lose the men behind. From ahead of us, I noticed the matte Lamborghini who was following Optimus closely.
"I recognize that car!" I pointed out. Ironhide looked at me, waiting to elaborate, "You know who Lockdown is?"
"No, wait that's Lockdown?" I asked, feeling my blood run cold, "I saw him not too long ago when I was at work. I thought he was just a regular person driving through, until…"
"Until?" he repeated impatiently, "Until I encountered him on my way back home…he knew where Optimus was this whole time." I merely whispered as it dawned on me.
"Why didn't you tell me this?" Ironhide snapped, his brow furrowed as he got mad. My eyes narrowed at him, "How was I supposed to know that he was Lockdown?"
Ironhide only rolled his eyes at me, making me feel bad, "You are supposed to tell me if you notice anything suspicious." How could I? How was I supposed to know that a Lamborghini is highly suspicious for driving through town? Was I allowed to assume?
We pulled through an abandoned property where I noticed Optimus was on top of a building, running away from Lockdown dodging his shots.
"They're following us," Ironhide hissed as he glanced at the rearview mirror. I peeked through the side mirrors when I saw the convoys trying to flank next to the GMC Topkick.
"We need to get rid of them!" I shouted as the men started to shoot at us again.
"What do you think I have been doing this whole time!" He shouted back at me as he drove straight through the building. "Jeez, Ironhide I don't know! I thought this whole time we were playing tag!" I was being sarcastic only to hear him growl at me.
Driving through the building I noticed Savoy was behind us with a walkie talkie in his hand probably shouting orders at the men to shoot us. It seems that the truck was impenetrable because the bullets did not go through, though I could not help to flinch every time we got hit.
"Do you trust me?" Ironhide asked. He had my complete attention when he asked that, "What?" I panicked, "Do you trust me?" he asked again. I nodded quickly; I mean do I really have a choice? "I need you to hold on to the seed as tight as you can. Whatever happens, do not let go." He instructed. I swallowed, and said, "Okay." I grabbed the seed and held it in my arms as tight as I could.
Ironhide drove the truck into the ramp that was placed inside the building. The convoys were only getting closer to us, hitting the truck with their cars. When I faced forward, I noticed that there was no end, only a drop. The weapon specialist is going to drive us over. I am scared of height, and I very much dislike the feeling of the drop.
"HOLD ON!" He shouted as the truck roared and drove us to the edge. My heart dropped to my stomach as we fell making me scream in fear. For a minute I thought I was falling to my death when the truck started to transform in the middle of the fall. The whole transformation Ironhide held me with one hand as he slapped the cars away as they fell after us, in this case their survival was low. He landed on his feet with me in his grasp. He put me down on the ground and I started to feel nauseous. I wanted to throw up.
"Lily, Ironhide look out!" Optimus shouted from the top of the building as two SUV's speed through the property. Ironhide started to transform back into his truck mode as I watched Optimus dropped himself to the ground and push the SUV's away from us. I opened the passenger door when I noticed from the corner of my eyes Lockdown was watching us, his emerald green eyes glowing through the cloud of smokes. I noticed him reached something from his chest and toss it at our direction. The black ops were catching up to us when one of the men noticed what Lockdown was doing and shouted, "Fall back!"
"Ironhide get out!" Optimus instructed as he transformed back to his semi. I jumped in the truck and looked back when Ironhide pulled away. The men that were chasing us were running for their life as the grenade went off killing few of them instantly. I watched in horror as their skeleton froze in a running position. I looked up from where Ironhide and I fell from and saw Savoy watching us leave, his face angry.
