As the train passed by the scenery between Odaiba and her destination, Yolei's mind drifted to the events from prior days, last Sunday to be precise. What started as an easy reckoning mission for some temples soon turned into a three-way battle between their enemies' newest pet, BlackWargreymon, and her group—with them ending as the losers on all sides.
But that wasn't all.
The next day, everyone had one hell of a bombshell to drop on Ken and her. The Reaper, The Emperor's second in command was Killua's partner.
Everyone gathered at the computation lab, including the previous Digidestined—Except Joe because college and Mimi because of obvious reasons—and Ken when that news was dropped, and the surprise didn't make itself wait.
"The Reaper!?" The older group, Poromon and Yolei yelped at the same time, Ken didn't said anything, but his eyes and Minomon's were as wide as diner plates.
Killua exhaled from his nose and nodded. "He apparently is, nothing is confirmed though, not yet…"
The boy looked tired, and considering that he fought the aforementioned Reaper the night prior and then deal with the revelation first no one could blame him.
The four that already knew stood behind him, likely for moral support, with Kari putting a hand on his shoulder to show it. "From what Agumon told us yesterday Blademon at the very least seemed to believe this was true," she said.
Killua's eyes slowly travelled to Ken. "He didn't… mentioned anything or seemed to be related to me before, didn't he?"
Ken furrowed his brows in thought, before shaking his head. "No. The first time he… we saw you on the Digital World he just seemed angry all of the sudden, and every time you were brought up he tried to jump at every chance he could to fight you."
"So the behavior we were already used to…" He muttered with a disappointed expression.
"So, what'll you do now?" Matt asked him. "Try to find him and know if what he said is true?"
For a moment, Killua's eyes seemed to go to Kari, but it was so briefly that Yolei thinks she imagined it. "No," he answered. "There are two people that can do that for me."
"Arukenimon and Mummymon," Tai guessed. "They worked with Blademon, even when he pretended to work under Ken."
Ken's face twisted with disgust at the thought of those two. "Did they use him too then?" He mumbled.
"Ken," Killua called. "Right now, until they decide to show their faces again, you might be the biggest lead yet. Blademon mentioned you both had a 'gift' of sorts, something that made you stronger. And I could feel a similar aura on him as the one you had as the Emperor; do you know what it could be?"
Ken mulled over the question, idly scratching the back of his neck as he did so. "I'm… Not sure. Ever since I stopped being the Emperor my aura did felt different—it's why I changed my ability—but I don't know why as much as I don't know who awakened my Nen in the first place."
"Then that's enough information, don't you think?" Killua said. "Whoever awakened your Nen might have something to do with Blademon's motives to try and kill me."
"The mastermind pulling the strings behind Arukenimon and Mummymon," Cody muttered with narrowed eyes. "What would they gain by doing any of this?"
"Nothing aside from a sick sense of satisfaction," T.K replied just as angry.
"So both Blademon and Ken were given that gift or whatever and the two turned strong and into bad guys," Davis recounted. "Then whoever it is really means bad news, especially if they are Nen users."
"That's the gist of it," Yolei said scratching her head. "Wonder what kind of ability they have."
"That gift stuff could be his ability," Killua said, "A Manipulation technique at its finest. Maybe whatever it is makes their target act contrary to what they'd normally be," he mused.
Ken's fist clenched and his teeth gritted together at the thought of the one responsible of making him so much evil on the Digital World and planting the towers giving form to new enemies.
Minomon looked at him worriedly. "Ken?"
His partner's voice brought him back to reality and he gave him a small smile. "I'm… I'm okay," He assured.
From the side, Yolei reached and put a hand on his shoulder. Ken looked at her and smiled at the gesture.
"But there must be a way to stop that ability right?" Kari questioned Killua. "It might have a limit if Ken and Blademon snapped out of it."
Killua shrugged. "The only similarity I can think is that it either wears off with time or that when they use that weird red aura its holds weakens, but who knows if it's just dumb luck or something else."
"So as for the rest of things, they are pretty much the same?" Tai asked. "Wait for those two to appear again and in the meantime-"
"-keep busting towers like there's no tomorrow," Killua said with a nod. "And keep an eye on those temples for when the hag and the zombie reject make their appearance."
T.K frowned, "And what about BlackWargreymon?"
Killua shrugged. "He is against those two as well from what you told me, for now we have to focus on keeping his fights away from the temples. If we make him and the dog fight away from there he could get rid of their mutt for us."
T.K didn't seem by the idea, if the way his lips pursed like he sucked a lemon were any indication, but in the end he sighed and nodded, "Alright then."
"Sorry for the urgent call guys," Killua said, scratching the back of his neck. "But I didn't want to keep you out of the loop."
"It's okay," Sora reassured him. "We appreciate it, you guys are dealing with so much that it's hard to keep up."
"If you ever need any help don't doubt in telling us," Matt said with a thumbs up.
Kari smiled at them. "Thanks guys."
Killua sat up and stuffed his hands in his pockets. "I would've liked to have this day off, but we can't afford to miss their movements," He said. He turned to the younger kids and gave a nod. "Let's go,"
They nodded and brought their Digivices out.
She let out a big exhale when she stepped out of the train station. 'Not dealing with that right now, for now…' She took in a deep breath and let it out in an excited yell. "I'm in Kyoto!"
Her class had this trip scheduled to last all weekend. Her team was understanding about it and promised to text her if there was another emergency. She brought her laptop in case she had to make a trip there in the middle of her visit, or just to have some games to play. Sadly she had to leave Poromon behind, but Izzy volunteered to look after him.
"Yolei, hey," she heard her classmates call for her. "The teacher is calling us to take the bus!"
She nodded and ran to them. "Right, right, sorry," She apologized, "Got too caught up on the moment."
She joined them in the listing of names, her giddiness over the trip never leaving her as she did. She wanted to experience everything there the sightings, the fresh air, and the food!
As she thought of everything that could be experienced there, her eyes widened as she remembered something, she had an important task to do here as well.
"Um, professor?" she called raising her hand. "May I go to the bathroom before we go? I promise it'll be real quick!"
Her teacher gave her a look before nodding curtly. "Alright, but don't take too long, the bus won't wait for us all day."
She nodded and dashed towards the bathrooms of the station. Her bag secured on her backpack and her eyes blazing with determination. "Mission: Start."
She entered one of the bathrooms stalls and locked it behind her. She took out her laptop and booted it up. She took her Digivice out and pointed it to her screen, the image of the Digiport appearing on the screen.
"Digiport Open, single Digidestined let's go!" she yelled-whispered.
With a flash of light she was gone… for less than a minute.
Another flash covered the stall, accompanied by an annoyed voice. "Okay first off: What?" the voice said," second: The fuck?!"
Yolei adjusted her glasses as she looked at the person in front of her with a sheepish expression. "Hehehe, sorry for the crude trip," she said. "And okay, maybe I should've chosen a better place rather than a bathroom stall."
"Oh so that's what it was. Now, explain."
"Well… With everything that's been happening lately, we thought that you needed a vacation!" She exclaimed. "And since my class took this trip to Kyoto, we thought it would be like the perfect occasion!"
"I knew you guys were up to something when the others left without me. What happens if Arukenimon and Mummymon appear?! They've being silent these last days and who knows when they'll come back?"
"You have a terminal now, and we have a computer," Yolei said. "And it's not like the others are going to be slacking off without us! C'mon it'll be fun!"
Without any other choice available, since all of his others ways back to Odaiba were in said place to begin with, one Killua Zoldyck could only sigh in resignation, "Fine. But don't think you and the others are off the hook for pulling this kind of stunt on me!" He said with crossed arms and a non-amused expression.
Yolei laughed nervously, "Right, right." Her eyes suddenly widened nervously. "Oh, crap. We're in the women's bathroom, how are going to get you out?!"
Without missing a bit, Killua used his Zetsu and walked out of the stall and then out of the room. And if the lack of enraged screams was any indication, then he hadn't been noticed.
"Oh, right, ninja-assassin leader," Yolei said with a blink before shrugging. "Bingo, I guess!"
She ran out of the bathroom and back towards her group. She got told off by the teacher for taking so long, but soon they were on their way.
With a certain white haired boy perched at the top of the bus's roof.
"Thank you for coming here, Ken," Izzy said as the two sat on the small table of his room.
On the side of the room, Poromon was laying on his side with a tired expression, with Minomon poking him with curiosity.
"No problem," The boy said. "What did you wanted to talk about?"
"Recently I've exchanged some information with Gennai," Izzy explained. "He's been doing it for a while now, especially after the events of last week." To avoid awkwardness over the reminder of those events and the reveal, the tech wiz continued. "One of the things he explained to me was that the D-3 models that the others have turned in them to adapt to yours."
"Adapt…" Ken muttered looking down at his grey and black Digivice.
"At the beginning they were supposed to be like ours," Izzy explained, looking at his own Digivice. "But due to the function yours possessed the Digi-eggs grated them the ability to counter it. We discussed why your Digivice took that form, so we hoped to gain some insight from you."
Ken continued to stare at his Digivice before putting it down. "I was called to that Dark Ocean when I was younger and submerged my Digivice there, I remember that it was like yours before, but when I put it on those waters it turned into what it was now." He frowned as he stared at the device again. 'Although, back then it was purely black in color, after Kimeramon's destruction I noticed it turned grey…'
"Hmmm… There's not much to go from there," Izzy mused as he cupped his chin. "Maybe that place gave your Digivice new powers, like the ability to nullify Digievolution, but for it to work it had to adopt a new form. Like how some operative systems need better complements in a computer to work."
"New powers…" He looked down at the Digivice again. "When I created Kimeramon, I feed it with the dark energies on my Digivice; you think that is one of its powers?"
"It could be," Izzy nodded. "When the Digital World came in contact with your D-3 it had to counter it in some way, and it did so through the Digi-eggs, possibly because that's also from where your own Digivice came from.
"That might also explain the change you all go through in your attires when you jump between worlds," Izzy continued. "Your black Digivice granted you a form you desire, and since the others' Digivices were meant to counter yours they did the same."
Again Ken had to hide a grimace, the appearance he desired. The appearance of the Digimon Emperor looked like a twisted version of his brother, because his deepest desire back when he got his Digivice was to fill the void Osamu left.
"That leaves only one issue to discuss," Izzy said with a serious frown, "The identity of the mastermind, the one who sent you that mail and turned you into the Emperor, and Blademon into the Reaper."
Ken tightened his fist at the thought. "All I can remember is that he was a man around his thirties or forties, I tried to look for the mail but… It was such a long time ago that I think it's forever lost."
"It was expected," Izzy sighed. "One thing is for sure though, even if he is the one who made the Port like Gennai said, or that he has Killua's Digivice with him he can't go to the Digital World. Otherwise, why use you to put the towers in the first place?"
Ken frowned. "What I want to know is not only why he choose me of all people, but how could he come up with something like the Control Towers. The more I try to remember how they function or how they are built the foggy it gets. Even as the Emperor, I had no idea they could take the shape of Digimon through whatever means that woman uses."
"Don't put so much pressure on yourself to remember," Izzy told him with a reassuring smile. "All we can do is focus on destroying them. Although, that still leaves one remaining question, something that was brought to my mind when we talked about the other world."
Ken raised an eyebrow, "The Ocean?"
"Yes. The first time Kari went there, she said their inhabitants all had Dark Spirals attached to them, yet you never went to that world while you were The Emperor, right?"
Ken shook his head. "No, I never went there. Not until recently, when Yolei made her Crest glow," he said, looking subtly at Poromon, who was being poked by Minomon.
"Then either that woman or the mastermind did," Izzy mused. "But for what purpose we don't know…"
"… As usual," Ken said with a sigh. Every time the issue of what their enemies' end goal was brought up it felt like they just run in circles.
Izzy also gave a sigh, feeling as exhausted about the issue as Ken, when he received a mail to his laptop. He opened it and turned to Poromon. "Hey, it's a message from Yolei!"
"Great…" The ball of feathers tried to cheer.
"Are you okay?" The redhead asked.
"I think he's just spending too much energy by staying here without Yolei," Minomon suggested. "I can stay as Wormmon normally, but as Minomon I feel less tired."
Izzy scooped the pink In-Training. "Right, it's been three days since she went to Kyoto. She is supposed to come back tomorrow, though. Wonder how she's handling Killua."
"Davis told me about the plan," Ken said, looking nervous. "You think he might be upset?"
Izzy chuckled nervously while shrugging. "Who knows with him? He might have a good time, yet still hold it against them."
Ken walked up to them and took Poromon from Izzy's hand. "I'll take him there. Davis and the rest must already be there to keep an eye on things and to continue with the tower's destruction."
Izzy nodded. "Right, be careful out there. We're still unsure of the effects the destruction of that temple might've had on the Digital World."
Ken nodded back. "Okay, but… say Izzy," he looked at the boy with a curious, almost shy, expression. "Why did you wanted to tell know so much about our circumstances?"
Izzy shrugged. "I guess it's just how I am," He replied. "Even when I was a kid, when I went to the Digital World for the first time I wanted to learn everything about it my way. Though, I was still too young to know all the answers by myself and lacked enough information to get the full picture. There are still things we don't know about the Digital World in general, but now I want to learn everything I can about it. I'm sure that by doing so we can learn more about its relation with our world and others, like Killua's and that dark place."
Ken nodded in understanding, but before he could say anything else his D-Terminal beeped. He flipped it open and raised an eyebrow. "Message from Davis," He opened and his eyes widened. "This…!"
"What?" Izzy asked.
"Arukenimon and Mummymon, along with their pet," Ken informed.
"They're attacking another temple?!" Izzy questioned in alarm.
Ken shook his head. "No, they're at the north, where they already struck."
"Why? Is there something else there?" The boy continued to ask.
Another beep, "Here's the answer," Ken said. He read the message and blanched. "Oh…"
"What?"
Ken looked up at him. "Is BlackWargreymon, he's attacking them."
Izzy and the Digimon present blanched. "Oh…"
"TERRA DESTROYER!"
The car swiveled as it ran at full speed, away from the constant blast thrown by the renegade dragon, "How did he found us!?" Mummymon panicked.
Arukenimon growled, "He's still being called by BlackMetalGarurumon's presence! What a pest!"
Speaking of the dog, it charged towards the dragon ramming his head against his sides as he came to his maker's aid. BlackWargreymon glared at him with contempt, while the dog growled and barked at him.
The car skid to a stop and its two passengers turned to see the confrontation between the artificial Megas. "Damn him! If it wasn't for his intervention then we could've destroyed another temple!" The woman seethed. "And what's worst, the brat isn't even here to try and distract him for us!"
She learned what happened to him alright; Blademon finally used the master's gift and was faced with a reality shock that broke its hold on him. Now he was completely off the radar, possibly trapped in the dark world, and neither she nor the master had any desire of go looking for him when they couldn't put on a leash on him again.
BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon charged at one another, the dragon got hold of the dog's shoulders and threw it away. BlackMetalGarurumon spun in the air and launched a blue blast to its enemy. BlackWargreymon grabbed the plates behind his back and used them as a shield against the blast, he took advantage of his position charging forward and slamming the shield against the snout of his enemy.
The wolf growled and many slots on its armor opened, launching various missiles all aimed at the dragon. BlackWargreymon flew back while dodging the missiles, or blocking them with his gauntlets or shield.
The constant detonation of missiles lifted a cloud of smoke in the air. A clawed hand swept it away, revealing an uninjured BlackWargreymon with only a few scratches on his armor. He gave a roar and charged towards the wolf, who copied his action by howling and meeting his charge head on.
They grappled against the other, with the wolf burying its fangs on BlackWargreymon's forearm while he gripped its shoulders.
"You…" BlackWargreymon growled as he glared down at the wolf. "I don't care how long it takes; I will get rid of you! That way the pain will end!"
"Grrrr…" The wolf didn't answer verbally only focusing on biting down hard on the forearm.
The Digidestined arrived at the scene, riding their partner's armored forms. They stared nervously at the scene in front of them. "I don't like this, not one bit…" Davis muttered.
"We need to get close to those two…" Kari said, glaring at the car where the two Digimon in disguise were sitting.
T.K grimaced. "If we try that, we might call the attention of BlackMetalGarurumon, he only fights to defend those two."
Cody looked at his terminal. "Ken's on his way, and already sent messages to Yolei and Killua, hope they read it soon."
"Partner, heads up!" Pteramon said, looking at the fight.
The two artificial Digimon broke apart and charged their attacks, with BlackWargreymon bellowing its name as he threw it, "Terra Destroyer!"
BlackMetalGarurumon spat his blue blast at the same time. Both attacks clashed against the other and as it did, something strange happened. Instead of exploding upon impact, they grinded against each other as sparks of energy flew around and the world itself seemed to twist on itself.
"That is-" T.K gasped, he seemed something like this once. The first time Agumon evolved in MetalGreymon against Etemon.
The chaos subsided and suddenly something was different. BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon continued to fight against each other, except with one difference. Their bodies were transparent, flickering in and out of existence.
Kari's eyes narrowed, but she quickly relaxed. "They're… what happened?" She thought it might have to do with the Dark Ocean, but it was different, they didn't turned to static, they looked more like… ghosts.
"I don't know," Nefertimon answered. "But whatever it is, it doesn't bode well."
"Everyone, I want you here in three hours, got it?" The professor told her class as everyone scattered to enjoy their last day.
The trip has been a lot of fun. She visited shrines, temples, food stalls, most of them with their friends, but also with a shadow following closely.
Killua went unnoticed by everyone in her class except for herself; she had slipped during the last hours of the tour to drag him around to see the same sights over and over, with the boy asking for historical questions she struggled to answer, story wasn't her strongest subject, and who knew their leader was an intellectual too?
He also stuffed his face with almost every candy he finds, luckily she had a really big allowance in her pocket from all the extra-turns on the shop, that way she can also have more for herself and for Poromon when she goes back.
"Sorry, guys, there's somewhere I want to go," She told her classmates. "I'll meet you up at the store before we have to go back."
They gave her understanding nods and she slipped away towards a small alley. She stood there and looked around for a few moments. "Psss, Killua!"
"Yo," The voice came from behind, causing her to squeak in surprise as she turned around.
"Don't do that!" She hissed to which he just grinned like a cat and shrugged.
"No promises," He said, "Now, where to?"
"There's not much to look, at this point," She said with a shrug. "Not without getting really far from the group and the meeting place."
"Then let's just go to a candy store!" He said with a big smirk on his face.
"You say that because you aren't paying," She deadpanned at him.
He shrugged and chucked, but before the conversation could develop any further, they heard a thunderous sound and saw in the distance a pillar of purple light emanating from somewhere in the city. "What was that?!"
Killua narrowed his eyes as he saw the light disperse in the sky. He gasped and took a step back when he saw what appeared on the sky. "Look there!" He said.
Yolei followed her vision and her eyes widened at what she saw. "That's BlackMetalGarurumon!"
"And BlackWargreymon," Killua said tersely.
The two of them seemed to be locked into another fight, but their bodies looked different, like a mirage of sorts. That didn't stop them from continuing to exchange blows against each other. BlackMetalGarurumon bashed its head against its opponent's stomach and then unleashed a blast from his mouth that sent BlackWargreymon crashing to the floor, a few feet from where they were standing.
Yolei looked around, expecting people to start looking at the two creatures in shock or to start calling the authorities, but to her surprise everyone moved on with their lives as if nothing was happening. "Why are they… how can they not see this?"
Killua's eyes narrowed. "This happened before…" He told her. "Five years ago, before the incident with the Odaiba fog."
"It did?" She asked, and then he took off running. "Wait!"
"I'll explain in the way, we need to see what's going on!" He told her as he ran in the direction where BlackWargreymon fell.
Yolei followed him without further protest, and just as the two turned on a curve they froze. BlackWargreymon walked out of the alley where he crashed, but following him where a group of… familiar creatures.
Made of a sluggish substance, they followed BlackWargreymon for now reason in specific, their red eyes looking around aimlessly. Killua clenched his fist while Yolei gulped.
Those were creatures from that Dark Ocean.
BlackWargreymon extended his wings and charged at his opponent again, both of them clashing in the sky. The creatures looked at him go and took a big leap to try and follow him—their reason? Who knows, but they didn't bring any good news—yet they failed to reach the Mega and just continued to leap on the direction where he went while continuing with the fight on the sky.
"We have to follow them," Killua said. "Those creatures shouldn't be here, and who knows what damage they might cause, not to mention the collateral damage of that fight!"
Yolei fished her D-Terminal. "T-the others sent a message, they've found Arukenimon and Mummymon."
Killua clenched his fist at that. What a great time to be away on this city! And away from the computer, he could be there getting the answers he needed. In fact, if he used Godspeed he was pretty sure he could drag Yolei there and go to stop them. But that meant leaping those creatures, and the combatants run rampant through this city.
"Let's deal with this first!" Killua told her. "C'mon."
"Oh, right, yeah!" The two took pursuit of the pack of creatures, who in turn were going after the fight.
The big jumps the pack of creatures were taking, gave them an advantage over the two children, soon they were running across the whole city trying to find just what they wanted to do.
Up in the air, none of the two Megas seemed ready to give up. BlackWargreymon delivered a knee to the mutt's chin. BlackMetalGarurumon responded by shooting lasers from the metallic parts of its snout which were blocked by the dragon's gauntlets. For each attack, the opposite had a counter for it.
Killua and Yolei ran on a bridge, with their targets continuing to go away with giant jumps and leaps. Killua clicked his teeth in annoyance at this. "At this rate we'll take a page from their book and use Nen to propel ourselves!" He told the others.
"Can't you just hold up for a few seconds!?" Yolei demanded the pack they were chasing.
One of them seemed to hear them, it turned around to them and his eyes lingered in Killua while narrowing. "Anomaly…" It growled.
It's shape started shifting and twisting, just like the blob that turned into Blossomon. It became sleeker and taller before hunching over in an animalistic way. From the mud on his hand something sprouted, taking the form of a long staff that it twirled on its hand before it's appearance became clearer, "Gokuwmon!" It growled.
"Why is nothing ever easy…?" Killua growled back as he took a step forward. "Yolei, try to get across with the others. Know the situation over there and see if they can offer us back-up here."
"Osu!" She said, already with a terminal in hand.
She let out a small gasp as she saw that she already had a message from them, telling her that they've found Arukenimon and Mummymon. That meant they must be busy with them right now. 'Oh no…' she grimaced.
The sludge with the form of 'Gokuwmon' attacked the boy with its staff, Killua raised his hand and blocked it before kicking the creature on the stomach to push it away, meanwhile Yolei typed rapidly on her terminal. Hoping that maybe, just maybe, the others would be able to come on their aid.
The beeping on the terminals was mostly ignored by the Digidestined as they stood in front of their enemies, preparing for the inevitable fight about to break. The two Megas had suddenly disappeared, leaving the field open for them to attack.
Arukenimon looked at them with contempt. "You're aces aren't here, the Ultras and the Anomaly. And still you want to fight?"
They all let their Ren flow as a form of defiance. "Did you forget about this?" Davis boasted, clenching his fists.
She scoffed. "Please, your tricks only caught us by surprise the last time. It won't happen a second time!" She said, as her body started budging to adopt her true form, while Mummymon took his coat off.
The armored Digimon returned to their usual forms, deciding that their Champion forms would be better suited for this. The Digidestined, except for Kari, took their Digivices and they glowed, bathing their partners with it.
"V-Mon Digivolves to… Exveemon!"
"Armadillomon Digivolves to… Ankylomon!"
"Patamon Digivolves to… Angemon!"
Arukenimon and Mummymon jumped down from their cliff to the lower ground, the Digidestined plus Ankylomon and Gatomon followed them while Angemon and Exveemon took the skies. Like on the battle of the swamp they divide in two groups, one to deal with each of the villains.
Davis dashed towards their opponents. He gave a stomp to the ground and focused Nen to propel himself, "Fire Tornado!" He spun on the air and kicked the ball towards the spider Digimon.
Arukenimon used the whips on her hands to bat away the sphere of Nen, and leaped to the side as Cody swung his shinai towards her. She sneered at the two impudent boys and puffed her cheeks to let out a blast of poisonous breath.
Cody jumped away from the cloud to join with Davis; the two of them covered their mouths to not inhale it. Above them a gust of wind dispersed the mist, they looked up to see Exveemon flapping his wings to get rid of her attack.
He crossed his arms over his chest and launched his blast towards the spider woman, "X-Laser!"
Arukenimon crossed her arms and tanked the attack, smirking as she did so. A shadow suddenly loomed over her and she looked up to see Ankylomon about to smash her with his body. She moved to the side and the yellow Digimon crashed on the earth with the forces of a meteor.
Mummymon for his part had to struggle against a tree of one fight. Gatomon, Kari and T.K all went straight to the offensive, pushing the rotten Digimon to be on the defensive and not allowing him to use his Mummy Blaster or his Snake Bandages.
He tried to leap back to gain some distance from his opponents, but from behind a golden staff impacted against his back, sending him crashing face first against the floor, right at the feet of the opponents he was trying to avoid.
Gatomon took her chance, grabbing his ankle and spinning. She threw him and his body sailed until it crashed against a boulder. "Ugh! Oh… This isn't good…" The Mummy groaned and shook his head to get rid of the dizziness, "If we had our puppy to help!"
Arukenimon turned to him while dodging another of Davis' balls, "Focus! We can't depend of the weapon right now!" She told him, turning around to dodge a strike from Cody.
"Yes, honey…" He groaned, stepping away from the boulder and readying his blaster. 'The things I do for love…' He thought as he fired his gun.
"Hideaki," A woman said dreamily as she gazed at her loved one.
"Eiko, I…" The man responded, getting close to her.
Just then, shadows walked past them, causing the image on the camera to turn into static. "Ah!" The man behind the camera yelped in shock, and the actors and other technicians turned to him.
"Shin, are you okay?" One of the people helping on the filming of the romantic scene asked.
"I-I saw something in the camera," Shin Kido responded as he looked at the recording over and over to see if he could see those shadows again.
"Watch out!" Someone yelled, and Shin barely had time to move his camera out of the way when something crashed on the site where it was standing.
Killua regained his bearings as he jumped back to his feet; he looked up to see his opponent twirling its staff and jumping down from a building to slam it over his head. He moved out of the way and Gokuwmon only hit an empty space on the floor, it turned to glare at Killua only to receive a right hook to the face that sent it bouncing across the sidewalk.
"W-What's happening?!" The actress asked as she clung to the actor.
Yolei turned around a corner, following the current fight. "There you are!" She said.
"This guy is sturdier than I thought," Killua told her. "No news on the others?" He asked, keeping his eyes on the monkey.
The fake Digimon snarled and jumped, its cheeks puffing before it exhaled a torrent of black fire towards the boy. Killua leaped back, while everyone present ran away in shock.
Everyone, except for Shin, who stared at the scene with wide-eyes, "That creature is…" He mumbled, memories of five years ago resurfacing.
The torrent of flames ceased and the monkey perched itself at the top of a building, it sneered at the white haired boy before turning away, deciding to continue its persecution over the two entities fighting above the sky.
However someone else had other plans for it.
Out of nowhere a spiked lance slammed against its chest, "Spike Buster!" liberating a shockwave that sent it towards a river.
Killua and Yolei stared in shock at the figure of JewelBeemon , who looked at the river waiting for the creature to emerge again.
"Killua, Yolei!" They turned to see Ken running to them from down the street, Poromon on his arms.
"Yolei!" Poromon didn't wasted time to jump on his partner's arms when she was on reach.
"You guys, how'd you get here?!" Yolei asked in surprise as she snuggled to Poromon.
"Your laptop, at the hotel," Ken responded. "I was on my way to meeting with Davis and the others when I received your message, since you mentioned BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon being here I had to check…"
"Speaking of whom, they're getting farther and farther away," Killua said. "Even if they're mirages, they could cause damages to the city. But first, we have to deal with that monkey."
As if summoned by his words, the creature emerged from the river, jumping to a building to stand on the same level as JewelBeemon.
Ken noticed it's strange, black complexion and his eyes narrowed in recognition. "It's one of the creatures from the ocean…" He said, receiving nods from the two. "Very well then, JewelBeemon no need to hold back!"
JewelBeemon nodded and twirled his lance, "Got it!"
Killua focused Nen on his feet and propelled to the same building where the monkey was standing. He reached the edges of it and lifted himself to stand on the roof, right behind it. The monkey looked between his two opponents and realized it was trapped.
Electricity surged in Killua's hands while JewelBeemon dashed forward with his lance.
"Lightning Palms!"
At the same time, both attacks struck their target, "Spike Buster!"
The monkey screeched in pain as the force of both blows was enough to finally disintegrate it into nothing but specks of dust that scattered in the wind. "One down," Killua said, "now three or so more to go."
He dropped from the building to meet with the two Digidestined, while JewelBeemon reverted back to Wormmon, surprisingly. "I'll stick around for this," Ken told Killua as he picked his partner up. "Yolei told me what's happening."
"Good," Killua said. "Then we have to follow those two, those things are following them for a reason. And if they can adopt the form of Ultra levels, then God knows what can of damage another of them can do."
"That thing seemed persistent in attacking only you at first and kept glaring at you creepily, why?" Yolei asked, looking at the building where the monkey used to be.
Killua sighed. "Who knows? Not the first time I have a target on my back for being the Anomaly," He said with a dry tone.
A voice interrupted their musings, "Over here, professor!"
They turned to see the young man that was making the filming before, now accompanied by an older man with grey hair. "You were the ones dealing with that monster a few moments ago, right?"
Yolei responded for them, "Umm, y-yeah?"
"And you both are holding Digimon on your hands, right?" He asked with a smile.
Ken immediately tensed, while Killua raised an eyebrow at the man, meanwhile Yolei blinked in surprise.
"Allow me to introduce, my name is Haruhiko Takenouchi," The man, Haruhiko, said. "And this young man is my student, Shin Kido," he said, gesturing to said man.
Both Yolei and Killua blinked and exchanged looks while Ken looked at them, a bit lost, "Takenouchi and Kido?"
"I work at Tokyo University, but I've been doing a research here in Kyoto," The man explained. The trio found themselves on the backseat of a car driven by Shin, while the professor sat on the co-driver seat.
"I used to study medicine to be a doctor like my father and older brother, my little brother is still studying it though, but when I heard the professor's classes I decided to change my career," Shin explained them.
Yolei cleared her throat. "W-well, I'm Yolei Inoue, first year of middle-school; we came to Kyoto due to a school trip."
At least she did, Killua and Ken were just here due to different circumstances.
Shin chuckled. "Yeah, I figured, my younger brother talked about you and your friends from time to time."
Killua snapped his fingers and looked at the young man. "I remember now, you were there when that turn VenomMyotismon appeared."
"And I remember you too, but you don't seemed to have change much in five years," Shin said raising an eyebrow.
Killua closed his eyes and leaned back on the seat. "It's a long story," He said with a sigh. He looked over at Haruhiko with one eye open. "Then you are Sora's…?"
"I'm her dad, yes," Haruhiko confirmed with a nod. "She told me everything about the Digimon five years ago, after that incident on the sky," He explained. "Due to my job I travel a lot, even overseas, and that lead to some problems at home. Yet after that incident even I noticed a change on my daughter's attitude, for the better, she says that being around the Digimon helped her grow in some ways," his gaze turned to the two Digimon on Ken and Yolei's laps. "And for that I would always be thankful to the Digimon." As he said that, a small smile blossomed on his face.
"Oh, you're welcome I guess," Poromon and Wormmon said with small blushes.
Shin smiled and looked at the little creatures on their laps. "It's been so long since I saw Digimon, the last time was during that whole event in Odaiba. I still can't believe Joe went through half the stuff he told me." Then he frowned. "But the thing I saw in the camera and the one you were fighting with were Digimon too?"
Ken shook his head. "No, they're not, and we're trying to figure out what they're doing here," He looked at the professor, "I mean, why here in Kyoto specifically."
Killua hummed. "That's a good question…" Inwardly he grimaced. 'I just thought it was because we're magnets of troubles…'
Haruhiko hummed in thought. "This is just a theory, but since its foundation Kyoto has always been considered as a spiritual land," He said. "In the study I'm making, I try to find a relation between the legends of the past with modern day themes, and you can find many of them on this city. In the past, Kyoto was chosen as the capital of the country due to being the land of four Gods."
"Four Gods…" Killua muttered and looked at the others. "Like the temples…" He said in a whisper only they could hear.
Haruhiko continued with his hypothesis. "These four Gods were in the four cardinal positions, Genbu at the south, Seiryu on the east, Sujaku on the south, and Byakko on the west. Kyoto had all the attributes needed to be the capital with its river, mountain and access to other cities. Temples and sanctuaries were made to praise these Gods and keep monsters from the legends away from the city."
Ken looked down in thought. "I think now I understand," He told the others.
Yolei petted Poromon's head, "Me too, why they appeared here."
Killua nodded. "The parallels between Kyoto and the situation with the temples are undeniable, maybe that's why the mirage of those two appeared here, while the creatures from the ocean are starting to appear." He bit the tip of his thumb in worry. 'Would they continue to appear if that's the case, if we can't stop the destruction of the temples?' Worry gnawed at him at the possibility of more of the creatures of the ocean coming through if they fail, all of it aimed to a single individual on his mind. 'Kari…'
"Professor," Shin said, snapping the man out of his musing from his theory.
"Oh, but of course, times have changed and Kyoto is not the same as all those centuries ago," The man said with a chuckle.
'Maybe not Kyoto, but the Digital World is…' Killua thought with a frown.
"What I wanted to get was that Kyoto was a place filled with magic and mystery, almost different from ours," Haruhiko clarified. "Like the Digital World."
"Humm… The Digital World was born from the computers," Yolei mumbled as she looked down at Poromon. "Not magic or spirits, at least that's what Izzy told me."
"Perhaps that's how it was born, but now it might be much more, like the story of the ninety-nine gods," Haruhiko theorized.
Killua blinked, "The what now?"
"Inanimate objects that over time turned into sentient beings that terrorized the people," Shin explained from the driver's seat. "They might've started as data but now-"
"-They're alive," Ken finished, stroking Wormmon's head. "Like all of us," He said with a smile.
The other two smiled at the sight. Ken having understood that lesson better than anyone else.
When Killua looked back to the front he gasped, "Stop!" He told Shin. "There they are!"
Everyone looked at the front, and while the two adults couldn't see anything, the Digidestined saw it as clear as day. Over a bridge BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon continued their fight without a single rest, while the three remaining beings observed from the highway.
The kids got out of the car, two of them drawing their Digivices out while Killua just sharpened his nails, "Oi!" He called them out.
Two of the creatures turned, the third one still observing the fight. They growled and jumped on the bridge while their shaped started to morph and change until they resembled samurais, if their armor and katana were something to go by, "Musyamon!" They chanted.
"They don't seem like much!" Yolei said, bringing out her D-3 and Terminal. "Let's do this, Edo style!"
Ken looked at Wormmon. "Can you become JewelBeemon again?"
"I'm not sure," He said. "But I don't think I'll need to be."
Ken nodded and took out his D-3.
Killua for his part narrowed his eyes at the third creature. It hasn't moved from its position just observing the fight, "Deal with those two, I'll deal with that last one."
The two nodded and raised their Digivices.
"Poromon Digivolves to… Hawkmon! Hawkmon Armor Digivolves to… Shurimon! The Ninja of Purity!"
"Wormmon Digivolves to… Stigmon!"
"Flying Chainsaw!" Shurimon's blades spun around and slammed against one of the Musyamons' swords, sending it off the bridge.
Stigmon wasn't far behind, "Stinger Attack!" He sent a direct jab to the abdomen of the fake samurai that was blocked by its sword. The two samurais started to jump across the city, with the two partners pursuing them to put them to an end.
The two adults watched in awe. "It's amazing; this looks like something out of a movie!" Shin exclaimed.
"We have to follow them," Haruhiko told him. "Kids, get in the car."
Ken looked at Killua with uncertainty. "Should we use our Nen to help them out?"
Killua shook his head. "No, not yet, only if you see they're having it rough against them," He looked back at the still remaining last figure. "You go ahead; I'll deal with the last one."
Yolei nodded. "If you're sure then, come on Ken!" She told the purple haired boy.
Ken nodded and climbed on the car, leaning on his head to talk to Shin. "Let's go!" He told him
"What about him?" Haruhiko said, looking at Killua who remained outside.
"Trust us, he knows what he's doing," Yolei said with a nod. "Now go, before we lose our partners from sight!"
The two adults exchanged looks, before giving reluctant nods. These kids knew more about this kind of situations than them, if they know what to do they'll take their word for it and hope for the best.
The car sped up, hoping to catch the brawlers, while the Hunter stood behind.
Killua glared at the back of the creature and his claws sharpened. These creatures had given him and his friends nothing but trouble; first they try to take Kari, then they can suddenly transform into moody versions of Digimon, and then they dragged… him to their world. They were almost as bad as the spider hag and the mummy.
He would deal with it swiftly, going back to his root as an assassin, he could sneak up on it then he could end this swiftly, and then deal with a way to get BlackMetalGarurumon and BlackWargreymon out of this world.
He moved. Dashing forwards with his right hand drawn back to swipe the head off that thing and be on his way to help the others if they needed it. He was inches away from doing the deed-
And then he was stopped.
Killua gasped as the creatures hand caught his arm, mere inches away from its head. Keeping him trapped on a vice-grip. He tugged, trying to see himself free, but it didn't budge. The creature turned his head slowly to look at him.
Killua felt a pit on his stomach when instead of blood-red eyes, a pair of intense yellow stared at him. With a wide smile that reached its eyes. The creature looked like a black silhouette, like a shadow with a hole where the mouth it's supposed to be.
It brought a hand to its lips, signaling him to be quiet and then he let go of him—shoving him away and causing him to fall on his butt.
Killua glared at the creature, his eyes keeping steel that didn't wavered despite the nervousness rising in him. "What are you?!"
The figure shook—like it was chuckling, laughing—then it nodded, almost in satisfaction, and slowly it disintegrated into dust, as if it had been killed.
Before Killua could even process what just happened, a thundering sound caught his attention. He looked up to see BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon charged attacks of energy on their hands and mouth—respectively—and then launched them at each other.
They connected and a swirling energy formed in the moment of impact and started causing ripples that affected the two ghostly figures, distorting them until they slowly they fade from the sky.
Killua's fist shook at what he saw and he let out a growl. "Damn it what is even HAPPENING at this point?!" He asked to no one, his irritation growing as the questions on his mind piled up.
He took a breath to calm himself. "No time for questions now," He said. "Have to see how the others are doing."
Shurimon ran across the roofs of houses in parallel to his opponents, they were going towards a lake, which was going to leave them without much space to maneuver. Stigmon didn't have that problem, as he constantly dived down to thrust his stinger against the sword of the fake samurai.
The Musyamon they were fighting eventually leaped towards him, sword raised above its head, Shurimon raised his hands and blocked the blade before using the spring on his legs to push it away from him and launching it towards the nearby lake.
Stigmon and Musyamon's met each other's attacks and started a struggle to see who would overpower the other. Luckily for Stigmon he had an advantage his opponent didn't had, and that was that he had two stingers to work with. He reared his free arm back while the stinger glowed purple and thrust it forward. Musyamon leaped to dodge the attack and turned tail and ran away from the giant insect.
Stigmon was faster however, while Musyamon leaped from roof to roof towards the lake where his companion was, Stigmon delivered a drop kick to its back that sent it splashing in the water.
Both Musyamon emerged from the lake, just in time to see their opponents preparing to deliver the finishing blow. Shurimon took the big shuriken from his back and threw it straight to the head of one of them, "Flying Chainsaw!"
Stigmon brought his two stingers together and dived towards his opponent, "Stinger Attack!"
The blows met their marks and the fake Digimon screeched in pain before slowly disintegrating into nothing more than dust.
The car skidded to a stop in the shore of the lake, Ken and Yolei climbed out to check on their partners, "Did you do it?" she asked.
The two turned to give nods of confirmation and regressed back to their In-Training forms to leap on their human partner's arms.
Yolei caught Poromon and gave him a proud smile. "Good job!"
Ken looked at Minomon in worry. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, just not used to evolving in the Human World," He reassured.
"So it's over then?" Shin asked.
Haruhiko nodded. "So it would seem," He said.
Ken looked up to the sky with narrowed eyes. "But what happened with BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon?"
"Gone," They all turned to see Killua running towards them. "They're gone, vanished after they launched their attacks," He said as he stopped in front of the group.
While the two adults were surprised he caught up to them—on foot no less—the two Digidestined met up with him, "And the last creature?" Yolei asked.
"Gone too, it vanished before they did. Why? I don't know," He told them with a sigh and ran a hand through his hair.
"If BlackWargreymon and BlackMetalGarurumon left this place, then that means they're back in the Digital World?" Yolei asked with a worried tone.
Ken nodded with a grim expression. "It's highly possible, yes."
"Be it as it may," Haruhiko said from behind, calling their attention. "I think it's time to take you all back to the class."
While the boys blinked obliviously, Yolei paled. "Oh crap! We were supposed to meet in three hours," she looked at her Digivice for the time. "And that's in half an hour!" She panicked.
Arukenimon grimaced as she blocked a strike from Cody's shinai, ripples of indescribable pain running across her forearm as it impacted. She leaped away from a pair of blasts coming from Exveemon and Davis, and then she had to duck to avoid Ankylomon's hammer tail.
Mummymon was in the middle of a tug-of-war with T.K as his bandages and the threads of the boy's clothes wrapped one against the other. He lost immediately when Kari nailed a powerful blow to his stomach that forced him to let go, and made him sail across the battlefield straight into a double-fist punch from Gatomon, which in turn sent him towards Angemon who slammed his staff against his skull. Mummymon finally landed on the floor with a pitiful whine escaping his mouth.
Before they could continue on their assault however, up in the sky a vortex of swirling energy started to form and expand. Everyone looked up in time to see the vortex spat the two Megas, the two of them being sent flying in different directions and crashing on the earth below.
Arukenimon turned back to her human form, "Now is our chance. Mummymon, grab the weapon and run!" She said, leaping back and towards the car.
"Right," The mummy said, sending some bandages to wrap around BlackMetalGarurumon and dragging it into the car before speeding away.
"Hey, get back here!" Davis tried to propel himself to launch a ball of Nen, only for him to fall flat on his back. "Agh, crap…"
Cody sat on his rear while panting heavily, his sword vanishing. "We've… being using Nen for too long now…"
Kari and T.K also fell to their knees, while Angemon and Gatomon looked in the direction where BlackWargreymon. The artificial Mega got back to his feet; he was covered in bruises and scratches, but nothing overly serious. He extended his wings and flew away, completely ignoring the presence of the Digidestined.
"The two of them seemed really tired after their fight," Kari said, recovering slightly. "Then BlackMetalGarurumon might be out of commission for a while."
"Maybe," T.K conceded. "But if that vortex is what I think it is, then we might be facing more troubles soon."
"Good side is they continue to head north, away from the temples," Kari said, though inwardly she grimaced. 'Bad side is, we still don't have answers…'
The Digidestined stayed there to recover their breath, after pushing themselves to the limit with their Nen abilities, before recovering and going back home.
Despite the panic, they were able to make it back to the meeting spot, while also passing by the inn Yolei's class was staying to fetch her laptop.
"Thank you for everything professor, Shin," Yolei bowed as they stepped out of the car.
"No problem," The man smiled, "When you go back to Japan, sent my regards to Sora please."
"And to Joe," Shin added.
Yolei nodded, "Will do."
The car sped away while the trio waved at the men that helped them throughout the day. Yolei sighed and turned to Ken, "and thanks to you too, Ken."
"It was nothing, I'm glad I could help," He said, taking out his Digivice to go through the port.
"Have a safe trip home, and check on the others while you're at it," Killua told him.
"Will do," The boy nodded. "Digiport Open!"
With a flash of light both him and Minomon were gone.
The two left out a sigh as the day finally seemed to come to an end. Yolei turned to Killua. "Surprised you didn't just stay in the inn when we went for my laptop, since we're leaving tomorrow."
"Eh, wanted to see the day end through," He shrugged. "After everything that happened today I wouldn't be surprised if an U.F.O suddenly appeared."
"Don't jinx us!" Poromon chided, causing the humans to chuckle.
"Now that this short 'vacation' for me is going to an end, I have to ask, whose idea was this?" He asked crossing his arms. "I was still tricked into coming here, so I have to see on whom I will take it out."
Yolei giggled nervously while petting Poromon. "Ehehehe, we-well… It was actually… Kari's idea," she blurted.
Killua blinked. "Come again?"
"She came to me one day before and told me about the plan, saying that you needed a break after everything that happened last week with… Blademon," She said the last part hesitantly.
"She did huh…" Killua mumbled. Had she really went on her way for him to catch a break? Why? Well, not like he didn't enjoy it—the sweets, the sightings, and heck he was even at the right place at the right time to stop those creatures from running rampant. Despite everything, it was a nice experience… Thanks to her.
A familiar warmth came to his chest and travelled to his face. 'That girl…'
Yolei looked at him with a tilted head. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," He said, turning around. "Good meet with your class; I'll take a walk around and meet you at the inn."
"Okaaaay," She said, turning around and running to meet with her group.
At arriving and making excuses for herself, her classmates noticed Poromon and she tried to play it off as him being a stuffed toy. He immediately was snatched from her hands and the girls all started pulling his cheeks and cuddling him. Yolei could only hope her partner could take it all.
As for him, Killua needed to take a walk to clear his mind out of all the events of the day.
'If the other three temples fall then not only the Digital World will blend with this, again, but more of those things will crawl out of the Ocean,' He thought. 'And that means they could probably go after her again…'
He sighed, which leads him to the other point, this weird feeling he's been having on his chest when he thinks of Kari as of late.
'It's a foreign feeling but… I think I might have an idea…' He thought, conflicted. 'I… like her. Not just as a friend, but more—like Davis does… Maybe not that extreme,' He always acknowledged that Kari was pretty, that she had a nice smile, that her face was adorable, there were many factors. But that couldn't just be it, if that was the case then he would have just fallen for her on day one.
'No there's more. She is determined, when she sets a goal she wants to accomplish it, like when she asked me to train her. Then she wanted to be of more help, so I wouldn't always have to deal with all the strong enemies,' He listed, 'And now she's looking out for me, wanting to help me find answers about my partner, then comforting me with that hug… and now giving me a break away from the Digital World. Jeez that girl…' He thought with a smile.
Then he frowned. 'Okay, I like her. So what? It's not like I can tell her, I don't know if she has the same feelings, and even if she does it won't work out, just like it couldn't work out with Mimi five years —or months—ago even if I had returned her feelings. In the end, when this is all over, when there's no one else to beat, I'll have to go home. To Nanika and Alluka, it's been almost a year since I was brought here so almost a month over there… I miss them, and I need to know they're safe. Who knows if I'll be able to come back when this is all over, the gate Gennai is making could be a one-way door.'
He sighed again. 'So, I like here but can't say anything because it won't work out. That's sorted out; let's go over what I can do. If those things keep coming out, in the case we can't prevent the destruction of more temples, then I will do anything I can to keep them away from her,' He thought as he looked down at a river.
That leads to his last point… That strange silhouette he faced in the highway. He felt a shiver as he remembered its yellow eyes. 'Whatever that thing was it was dangerous, maybe it had the power to turn into a Mega and just didn't showed it. Those things can be sentient; the ones that tried to take Kari at first could talk. So it was an intelligent one that might turn into a Mega or a really strong Ultra… Wonderful,' He thought, dryly.
They will all have to step up in their game, to achieve all the tasks they have at hand. Defend the temples, unmask the mastermind, find answers about his partner, and prevent more of those things from coming to this world. '… No one ever said this job was easy…' He deadpanned.
He turned around and walked back towards the inn. Deciding that the first thing he needed to do, was take a well-deserved rest for the day.
Yellow eyes opened to look around the grey chamber he found himself in. "My, my so he is the Anomaly now, what a surprise. Maybe it's a Transmuter thing," he mused with a grin. "When am I supposed to meet with him and his group? I was about to enjoy a battle that I've waited for a long time~"
"A meddler is on a quest to upset the balance between worlds," The voice of his 'benefactor' boomed throughout the chamber. "Once he strikes his next objective, the boundaries between the worlds will be weak enough for you to cross as more than a shadow. And as for your fight, you will be returned to the same spot from where I have taken you."
"I see then," He sat down taking out a deck of cards. "Then I suppose I can wait for a few days." As he shuffled the cards he let out a chuckle. "I wonder how strong he's become. Since his friend lost his potential, I guess I'll have to take the second best I can find. Oh and the Digimon he's travelling with… I can wait to find out how far they can evolve or the skills they have. Fufufu… The expectation is killing me~" He licked his lips and his body trembled in anticipation.
He would wait of course. He was a patient person, despite what others might think. Soon he will go out to play in the Digital World once again~
A/N: I didn't expect this chapter to be this long, 37 seven pages wow. Now I'm using word, tell me if there's any different as from when I used my cellphone.
Also, what do you think of the temples replacing the Holy Stones? Is it better, worse? Tell me in the reviews.
