Chapter 6

A week later, found Barney and Robin at the OBGYN's clinic, waiting for Doctor Bell to come back with the results of Robin's blood test. As they waited, Barney couldn't help but stare at the poster of a diagram of a vagina. Robin smirked and tried to suppress her giggles when she noticed what was holding Barney's attention.

Both their heads snapped to the door as they heard it open, and watched as the doctor walked in, "Robin looking at your results, I've to say you are pregnant." Doctor Bell looked through the results, making a note that Robin needed to be prescribed iron supplements.

Barney stared at Robin, unsure how to process this information. He was going to be a father, how the hell can he be a father, he had no idea how to be a father. Even after a week of knowing this was a possibility, he wasn't sure what was going to happen next. Both he and Robin had avoided this topic like there was no tomorrow. Instead of wallowing, he decided to focus on Robin, who seemed to be frozen, so, he grabbed onto her hand. When she felt Barney's hand around hers, she gave him a wobbly smile.

"I would like to do an ultrasound to see how far along you are," said Doctor Bell, pulling Robin and Barney's attention back over to her. Knowing the drill, Robin lay back on the bed, and pulled her t-shirt up, afterwards she grabbed Barney's hand, wanting his quiet support.

"Now this is going to be slightly cold" warned the doctor as she squirted the gel on Robin's stomach, causing Robin to shiver a little.

Barney's attention was captured by the screen in front of him, as the doctor pressed the probe onto Robin's stomach, and there on the screen was an image that showed their baby. The doctor took down the measurements while explaining to the stunned parents to be, "Here you can see the baby's head, and here the baby's arm and legs are developing," pointing out on the screen.

Robin's heart seemed to expand as the sound of the baby's heartbeat filled the room, she glanced over at Barney, who had a suspicious wet glimmer in his eyes. In the back of her mind, she could see a baby girl with her hair and with Barney's eyes.

"Now looking at the size of the baby, I would estimate that you are about six weeks along and I would say that you are due beginning of March." Doctor Bell interrupted Robin's thoughts. "Now I know that this pregnancy is a surprise to both of you and you want to know your options." Doctor Bell finished up the ultrasound, letting Robin straighten herself out.

Once Robin was ready the two of them headed to the office of Doctor Bell, after they had sat down, Robin finally asked the question she knew the answer to. "What options do we have?"

Doctor Bell first talked to the couple in front of her and explained the results of the blood test, explaining that Robin's iron level was low and would need to take a supplement, she wrote up a prescription and gave it to Robin. She also handed over a range of different pamphlets to Robin and calmly explained, "There is a range of different options for you. The most obvious would be that you continue your pregnancy, have the baby, and raise it. The next option is that you have the baby and give it up for adoption, many couples want to adopt. The other option is abortion; however, we can't carry out the abortion after ten weeks. You still have a few weeks to decide."

Barney thanked the Doctor, taking the pamphlets that were on the table, took hold of Robin's limp hand, and pulled her out of the OBGYN's clinic. Standing outside the clinic the two of them stood there staring at each other and almost simultaneously said, "I need some time to think." The two of them turned away from each other and walked away in opposite directions.

Later that evening:

Robin had spent the rest of the day after her appointment at Central Park, she had spent the whole time lost in thought. She had no idea what to do, all she could do was imagine what sort of future there was, which was different depending on each option.

While Robin spent the day in Central Park trying to figure out which option she would take. Meanwhile, Barney spent the rest of his day at his childhood home. He hadn't stepped into the house since his mum had been admitted to the hospital, instead, he had hired a cleaner to come once a week to keep it clean. But, after having it confirmed that Robin was pregnant, Barney sat in the front room and quietly looked through his childhood photo album. He didn't know how to be a father, and the cause was in front of him, in all the photos in the album there was one thing missing from each photo, his father.

He didn't know what option Robin was going to take, and realistically he knew that Robin would take his opinion into account. The one thing he did know was that he would stand behind her regardless of the option she decided on in the end. After the loss of his mum, Barney could admit that the idea of having a baby with Robin didn't completely cause him to want to run away screaming in terror.

It was late in the evening, and Barney knew it was time to find Robin and for them to talk about what their next step would be. Without even having to guess he knew exactly where he would find her, Central Park was the place she went to whenever she had a problem or needed to think.

After making sure that he had some of his favourite photos in his pocket, and that he had locked his mum's house. Barney headed to Central Park. Once there he first got a hot dog and some snacks knowing that Robin wouldn't have eaten yet. Then he went and found Robin exactly where he knew she would be, sitting on a bench overlooking her favourite spot the gorgeous carousel. He sat down next to her and held out the hot dog, without even looking at him she took the hot dog from him. she quietly ate the hot dog, and neither of them wanted to start the conversation that would most likely change their lives. Scrunching up the paper wrapper, Robin quietly stated, "I can't abort this baby."

Barney nodded, "I know, but what do you want to do?"

"I don't know," cried Robin, "I don't how to be a mother, Barney. I don't know how to care for a baby. They scare the life out of me most of the time."

Barney suddenly remembered how she reacted the first time she saw the talking baby commercial, and sniggered lightly. Knowing what he was thinking about, Robin smacked Barney on the arm. Catching her hand in his, Barney pulled Robin closer to him and said, "I don't how to be a father either. What about adoption?"

"You saw what we were like at the ultrasound, do you really think that we could give up our baby? The two of us are the most possessive people in the world."

Barney thought about what Robin was saying and he knew she was telling the truth, in the end, he decided to tell her what he wanted, "I want us to keep the baby."

"Do you think that is something we can do?" doubted Robin

"I think this will be hard but I do know that the two of us together can do this. After all, you are the best bro, I have ever had."

Robin leaned against Barney more heavily the whole day had taken a toll on her. in her heart she knew that she wouldn't be able to give her baby up, even if she thought that it might be a better option for the baby. Barney wanted to keep the baby, this was something that surprised her, but after everything that had happened recently in his life, perhaps it wasn't that much of a surprise.

She knew that if they decided to keep the baby, Barney would be there with her each step of the way, "With us as parents, this kid is going to be so messed up" she stated.

Barney grinned in success, he knew this meant that Robin had made her decision, and they were having a baby together, commented, "We will get the kid a therapist." He hugged her closer and kissed the crown of her head.
