Chapter 1: The Beginning
Classic Era; The Past
The Classic Era. Where the adventure started. For years, the world has been threatened by the evil scientist Dr. Robotnik, who now takes on the name Dr. Eggman. He is always thwarted at the hands of a heroic blue hedgehog named Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic is the renowned hero of Earth. But he is not the only one. His best friend, Tails the two-tailed Fox, genius and brother-figure to Sonic. And Knuckles the Echidna, guardian of the Master Emerald, known for his impressive super strength and former enemy turned good friend of Sonic.
They have went on good adventures together, including one where Sonic and Tails meet their future selves and went on an adventure to stop the Time Eater from destroying all of time and space, until it was revealed that they were controlled by Dr. Eggman and Dr. Robotnik. But the two Sonics have thwarted their plan with Super Sonic and saved all of time. And now it was time for their next adventure. Sonic and Tails journeyed to Angel Island, Knuckles' home, where they encountered five Egg Robos sent by Classic Eggman who have discovered a powerful gem called the Phantom Ruby, which has the power to create augmented reality-warping powers and illusions and space and time warping abilities. With this power, they become the Hard-Boiled Heavies, led by the Heavy King.
Together, the heroes joined by Knuckles have made their way through many zones, old and new, to stop their Eggman from unleashing the Phantom Ruby on the world. Along the way, they have collected the Chaos Emeralds and destroyed most of the Hard Boiled Heavies, but the Heavy King survived. The three heroes make it to the Titanic Monarch Zone to prepare for their final battle, but things will unexpectedly come their way.
After getting past many obstacles and robots, including more powers of the Phantom Ruby, the trio confront the mad scientist.
"Hahahahahahaha! Welcome, Sonic! Welcome to your doom! Behold the Phantom Egg!" Classic Eggman gloated.
The Phantom Egg is shaped like an actual egg, has four tethers tied to the ceiling and floor, four pile drivers, hands and legs and the Phantom Ruby in the middle.
"The Phantom Ruby! There it is at last!" Classic Tails pointed to it.
"Heh; You catch on quick, Tails." Classic Eggman said sarcastically." With the Phantom Ruby, I can warp augmented reality in my own image. Heck, I won't even need the Chaos Emeralds this time. Thank my Hard Boiled Heavies for finding this discovery for me. A shame that they could not live long enough to see me triumph over you three losers."
Classic Sonic is not even afraid one bit. He puts on a brave face and flips forward once. He counts his fingers silently on how many times they have beaten Eggman, being six times. The sixth time being their battle against him, his future self and the Time Eater.
"Exactly what Sonic said. Right now it's 6 to 0. So why are you calling us losers when you haven't gotten a single win?" Classic Knuckles mocked. This causes Tails to laugh.
"He has a point you know. Besides, if you overload that Phantom Ruby, it could possibly cause the user to go insane, as everyone is under its control." Classic Tails said.
Eggman growls at Knuckles' insult and Tails' comment.
"Bah! I succeeded with it plenty of times, warped you three away several times. Even my favorite invention Metal Sonic was able to use its power. I will succeed. I will destroy you and conquer the entire world! HAHAHAHAHA!" Classic Eggman laughed.
Classic Sonic looks to his two friends and smiles at them, telling them that they can do this. Tails and Knuckles nod back and are ready to fight. Classic Sonic turns back to Eggman, smiles and gives him a thumbs down, telling him he's going down.
The Phantom Egg starts hopping around the entire room and hovering around because of its tendrils supporting him. Classic Sonic tries to use his spin attack, but he bounces off of him harmlessly. Classic Knuckles tries to glide into the machine, but the same thing happens to him. He then tries to punch it, but his punches are not even landing a scratch. That was when the idea started hitting Tails as Eggman lands on the ground and his tendrils start lighting up with electricity and a shield deactivates around him.
"Sonic! Knuckles! His shield is down!" Classic Tails shouted.
Classic Sonic and Classic Knuckles nod to their Tails. Classic Sonic spin dashes underneath the machine's feet, scooping it up in the air before Knuckles jumps up, does a strong uppercut before sending another punch on top of Eggman, sending him down and breaking one of the tendrils. Classic Tails jumps in the air and does a tails spin attack, damaging the machine some more and Classic Sonic jumps and does a spin attack on another tendril, destroying it, leaving two left.
"Those tendrils light up every time the shield is about to go down. That's our chance to strike." Classic Tails said.
"How absurd! You think all I do is hop around like a bunny rabbit? Here! Have a taste of what the Ruby can truly do!" Classic Eggman pushes a button.
Two Ruby-like hands appear out of nowhere as the Phantom Ruby lights up. Classic Knuckles tries to punch it, but the hand immediately grabs him and traps him. Classic Sonic and Classic Tails try to use a spin attack, but the other hand grabs them and traps them as well.
Suddenly, they are transported into a completely different room. Eggman is not there anymore. Instead, the blue Hard-Boiled Heavy, the Heavy Gunner appears in front of them.
"You gotta be kidding." Classic Knuckles said in annoyance. We trashed him. This is just a special effect, right?"
"No, it's not. The Phantom Ruby is a part of our reality. We're under its control." Classic Tails corrected him.
The Heavy Gunner fires its weapon in the air and bombs slowly start coming down. Classic Tails flies out of the way to avoid the bomb fire. Classic Sonic jumps and spin attacks a bomb back at the Gunner's weapon, knocking it out of its hand and Classic Knuckles grabs another bomb and throws it at the Heavy Gunner, blowing it up. As soon as that happens, the three heroes suddenly find themselves back in the room with Classic Eggman.
"Why you! How dare you break out and defy me?" Classic Eggman steamed with anger.
"Because your robots are trash and it's fun to trash them!" Classic Knuckles jokingly answered.
Classic Eggman starts getting more angry and he pushes a button and the pile drivers sticking out of Phantom Egg's back starts firing out and home in on the heroes as missiles. Classic Sonic uses his speed to dodge every missile swiftly while Classic Tails flies out of the way and one of the missiles locking on to him ends up missing and hits the third tendril. Classic Knuckles glides his way through the missiles and the tendril once more lights up with electricity before he could have a chance to punch it. Knuckles' hand is briefly shocked as he stumbles backwards. Classic Eggman jumps and was about to fire more missiles to finish him off, but Classic Sonic comes out of nowhere and spin attacks his machine, sending Classic Eggman down. Classic Sonic continuously spin dashes in place and breaks off the last tendril and the machine is sent flying from the spin dash. Eggman bounces off the ground as his Phantom Egg robot machine crashes onto the floor.
"Nah! Curse you, Sonic! You foiled my plans yet again! Even with a powerful gem I found, I was so close! I worked extra hard on my plans!" Classic Eggman yelled.
"You mean I found the Phantom Ruby." A voice said.
The Heavy King, now the Phantom King, now with extra long arms, no legs and a bigger crown. He descends down on the four, staring at Eggman and the Phantom Ruby.
"You again?! You're the same one who tried to steal the Master Emerald!" Classic Knuckles said, having recognized him from the Hidden Palace.
The Phantom King ignores him and stares at Eggman.
"What are you doing?! How dare you talk to your own creator? Destroy Sonic and his friends now!" Classic Eggman barked.
"Oh, I will. But first, that belongs to me." The Phantom King said. He takes the Phantom Ruby from Eggman's machine. "I was the one who found it, so therefore, it is right that I have it, master."
The Phantom King proceeds to place it on top of his crown, powering himself up.
"No! I discovered it before you five were born! It's mine! All mine!" Classic Eggman said.
Another hovering vehicle comes out of nowhere. Eggman's Egg Mobile has two barrel-like arms and a long, spring arm with a glove hand attached to the back of it. Eggman quickly jumps in it.
"I will not allow you to conquer the world! That is my job!" Classic Eggman defied.
Classic Eggman launches his Egg Klepto Mobile at the Phantom King and his spring arm grabs the Phantom Ruby, but the Phantom King was not gonna let that slide. The Phantom King grabs it and he and Classic Eggman both fight over it in tug-o-war. The Phantom Ruby starts glowing again and is starting to give off a reaction and making strange sounds.
"We gotta stop them!" Classic Knuckles said. He was about to run forward, but Classic Sonic stops him and looks at him, shaking his head. "What? What do you mean 'no'?
Classic Sonic gives a thumbs up and holds out a Chaos Emerald, giving Knuckles and Tails the idea.
"But Sonic. We don't know what will happen to you! The Phantom Ruby has been acting more strangely when we collected the Chaos Emeralds. Who knows what will happen when it reacts to you while you're Super Sonic." Classic Tails worries for his best friend.
Classic Sonic places a hand on his shoulder and gives him a serious look, and points to Eggman and the Phantom King.
"He's right, Tails. It's better to get rid of it rather than have those two bozos fight over it and destroy our world. He has to try." Classic Knuckles backs him up.
Classic Tails still does not like the idea of leaving Sonic alone to fight them on his own. Not only that, they all know how dangerous the Phantom Ruby can be. For all they know, the reality-warping powers can destroy the world. Classic Sonic smiles at Classic Tails and holds out his fist. His best friend fistbumps Classic Sonic.
"Good luck, Sonic! You'll always be our shining hope!" Classic Tails shows his confidence in him.
Classic Tails and Classic Knuckles run to the jet sled near the exit and it immediately takes off faster than an actual jet plane. As the sled goes, Classic Tails looks backwards and can't help but feel worried about Sonic staying behind to fight Eggman and the Phantom King.
Classic Sonic waves and smiles at them before he turns to his two enemies, ready to fight once more as they are still fighting over the Ruby. It glows brighter as it engulfs them and they are transported away.
Classic Sonic finds himself floating in a purple-hued void of a wasteland. The sky is purple and everything is floating around. In front of him, the Phantom King is holding the Phantom Ruby upon his crown and attempts to escape and use its power. But his creator was not going to let it slide.
"You traitor! That belongs to me!" Classic Eggman echoed.
"If you want it, then come and claim it, my master!" The Phantom King continued to defy him.
Classic Eggman launches towards the Phantom King and attacks with his barrel arms, but the Phantom King easily grabs his arms with his big hands and holds him back. Classic Eggman attempts to use the extra hand to grab the Phantom Ruby. The Phantom King uses the power of the Ruby to send a blast, knocking Eggman away. But he manages to recover and stares at the traitor.
Classic Sonic, who was watching, was not going to sit by and let this happen. He tightens his fists and was ready to join the fray. The seven Chaos Emeralds spin around Sonic and he closes his eyes. The emeralds all fly into his body and a bright yellow light appears and creates a sonic boom, which gains the attention of Eggman and the Phantom King.
"What? What is this?" The Phantom King asked.
Classic Eggman is shocked that this just came out of nowhere.
"Blast! I forgot! Not only could the Chaos Emeralds can be harnessed by anyone, it could also give certain individuals a Super State, and that includes Super Sonic!" Classic Eggman covered his eyes briefly.
Classic Super Sonic hovers in the air, his fur changing from blue to golden yellow. A yellow aura glows around him. He smirks at the scientist and powerful robot. Classic Eggman lounges at Super Sonic in an attempt to attack him, but Classic Super Sonic was too fast. He simply spin dashes through one of the arms and it blows up and Classic Super Sonic does a spin attack and knocks Classic Eggman away, sending him flying and screaming as he immediately disappears through the void.
Classic Eggman finds himself crashing into another one of his bases after being teleported out of the void and falls out of his Egg Mobile. He finds himself outside his Egg Base and is once more angry that his plans have been foiled.
"Oh I hate that traitorous Heavy King! But not as much as I HATE THAT HEDGEHOG! I HATE HIM! HATE HIM! HATE! HATE! HAAAAAATE!"
Classic Eggman began to stomp on his trashed vehcile and throw stuff around his based, throwing a tantrum like a child. Metal Sonic, having returned from his own defeat, stares at his own creator near motionlessly. He tightens his metal claws, also feeling more determined to defeat his flesh counterpart. Just one day.
Back in the Egg Reverie Zone, it was now the Phantom King against Classic Super Sonic. The Phantom King does not seem intimidated, even for a robot. But Classic Super Sonic does not care.
"That insane doctor is right. You are the blue nuisance to him, and now you're becoming one to me. No matter. Your change in color does not scare me. Let's see you pair up against my new power." The Phantom King challenged him.
Classic Super Sonic frowns and is ready to fight. The Phantom King flies back and surrounds himself in six energy orbs and starts firing them one by one at Super Sonic. Classic Super Sonic easily manages to dodge all of the projectiles and rams into the Phantom King, causing plenty of damage to him. He recovers and was about to punch the hedgehog, but Classic Super Sonic once again dodges and does a drop dash on the Phantom King, damaging his face and crown.
The Phantom King's eyes glow red and another barrier, this time surrounded by ten energy orbs, come around him and one of them managed to hit Classic Super Sonic, sending him back. Classic Super Sonic slides to his feet and shakes his head to shrug off the hit. The Phantom King fires more energy orbs. Super Sonic regains his bearings and dodges all of them and dashes to the king. He attempts to grabs Sonic and hold him in place, but Classic Super Sonic spin dashes through his hands, breaking them completely and does an upward spin attack, dazing the Phantom King. His eyes widened as he now sees his fate too late. Classic Super Sonic speeds up and rams into him by the face and crown. As they collide, the crown breaks off his head and the Phantom King starts short circuiting before he finally explodes. But as soon as Super Sonic collided with the Phantom Ruby, the Ruby pushes him back, knocking the Chaos Emeralds out of him, and turning him back to normal.
The Chaos Emeralds react to the Phantom Ruby, which starts to shake and it creates a colorful portal and sucks in both the Phantom Ruby and Classic Sonic, all while separating the Chaos Emeralds. The void is destroyed as they disappear through the portal before it closes.
Outside, the Titanic Monarch and the base surrounding the Little Planet on Earth is starting to explode. Tails and Knuckles have managed to escape as the mechanized Little Planet starts to shake.
"Do you think he made it out okay?" Classic Tails asked. He looks on in worry.
"He better. Or else we're gonna have some words when he comes back." Classic Knuckles said, while waiting impatiently. Then he notices something. "Wait. What's that?"
The mechanized Little Planet starts shaking more and it glows a purple color and it vanishes within a flash of light. The flash light then changes to a huge image of Sonic himself winking at his two friends.
"Wow! That looks so freaking cool, Knuckles!" Classic Tails said in awe.
"Checking the scoreboard. It's now seven for us. Eggman nothing. That's what happens when he doesn't put his followers in check." Classic Knuckles boasts.
Then, a purple portal appears right in front of the duo. Knuckles was ready to fight whoever was gonna come out of there. Tails puts on a big smile when he sees Classic Sonic jump out of the portal, safe and unharmed.
"Sonic!" Classic Tails runs up and hugs his best friend. "Haha, you did it. You saved the day once again.
Classic Sonic hugs Tails back with a warm hug and fistbumps Classic Knuckles.
"Heh. Not bad for a showoff, spiky. I could've handled both of them myself if I'd been there instead of you." Classic Knuckles joked. Classic Sonic said nothing gives him a teasing smirk.
Classic Sonic instead points to Knuckles and Tails and pointing to himself before making a fist.
"You're right. We all did. Because we're a team. Nothing can split us up as long as we stay together." Classic Tails said.
"Yeah, I suppose so. Now that those two losers are out of our way, I'm hungry. I can go for some chili dogs and grapes." Classic Knuckles said.
Classic Sonic jumps and spins in joy when Knuckles suggested Sonic's favorite food. The three of them fly off in the Tornado, ready to celebrate and relax after a long adventure. But they feel like they're forgetting something. But what?
Modern Era; Present Day
The Present Day. Things have changed since the last adventure for the blue blur. Sonic has once more defeated Eggman after a temporary alliance against the Deadly Six led by Zavok. But Eggman escapes and recovers to his lab. For more than a while, he has been scheming his next plans, trying to come up with more original designs for his robots. But he is still struggling.
"Hmm. No. No. And no! Why?! Why am I having such a hard time coming up with such new robot designs lately? This is ridiculous!" Dr. Eggman yelled in frustration.
Orbot, a robot that turns into an orb, a loyal, yet sassy robot who sometimes dislikes his master, approaches him.
"Umm, boss? Proximity sensors are picking up something unusual, an energy signature coming outside and levels are spiking." Orbot tells him.
Eggman looks on the monitor and spots a weird-looking gem outside the base. Right outside the door. The scientist goes outside to investigate.
"What in the world?" Eggman expressed confusion.
Eggman picks up the mysterious gem and within moments, bright lights appear right before Eggman's very eyes. It's EggmanLand. The amusement park that he once built during the Dark Gaia incident which has since been destroyed by Sonic and when the planet was being fixed. Eggman could not believe his very eyes. He drops the Ruby out of pure shock, but as soon as he does, EggmanLand disappears.
"No! Wait! Bring it back!" The mad scientist pleaded.
Eggman slowly picks up the gem and is astounded by what it just did.
"Somehow the mysterious gem caused the hallucination. That could be useful. Oh, I am going to enjoy researching this new baby." Eggman evilly smiles at his discovery.
Inside, Eggman is staring at the jewel. He wonders what else this jewel can do and how powerful it is. He is hoping that he could use it against his most hated enemy.
"The results on this thing are all over the place. Hmm. I wonder what to call it." He thinked.
Cubot, a cube shaped robot who is vastly loyal towards Eggman, but is highly dimwitted, tries to come up with numerous names.
"Oh! Oh! I got one! Spooky Sapphire?" Cubot loudly suggested.
"It's not even blue." Orbot said in a deadpan voice.
"Anarchy Beryl? Precious Stone?" Cubot continued.
"Too derivative. And the boss prefers you to not bring up that silly adventure, Cubot." Orbot said.
"I got it! I will call it…. The Phantom Ruby!" Eggman said. The alarms start going off. "What was that?
Eggman and his two followers look on the monitor, hoping it wasn't Sonic. It actually isn't. It's someone rather…. Unfamiliar to him. They look like Jackals. They are led by a leader, with two different colored eyes, blue and yellow.
"Jackal Squad! Move in for the kill! Raid the base, steal as many things as you can! Our clients want him dead! All of the tech will fetch us a lifetime of money!" The Jackal Leader ordered his squad.
The Jackal Squad start swinging their swords and cut through many Eggman robots, all looking very confident in their goal in achieving their bounty. Whoever their clients are, they must know Eggman well and must have some sort of connection to him. Eggman watches from inside the base while holding the Phantom Ruby in his hand.
"How dare these fools attack me?! If I d not wasted so much time trying to study this stupid rock, I would have built better robots by now!" Eggman growled in anger.
As soon as he said that, the Phantom Ruby glows and out of nowhere, a bunch of huge orb shaped robots filled with guns all pop out of nowhere, all staring at Eggman, awaiting his command.
"Huh. Well that's something. Anyways. Robot Army….. ATTACK! Eggman ordered.
The new, mysterious robots heed his command without hesitation and starting marching outside and start firing on the Jackal Squad and they prove to be more powerful than expected. Despite this, the squad are still trying to fight their way through.
"Deal with the robots! The fat man is all mine!" The Jackal Leader said.
The Jackal Leader jumps off a few of the new robots and was about to swing his sword down onto Eggman. Eggman acts in a way of fear and holds up the Ruby to defend himself. The leader's sword strikes the Phantom Ruby and all of a sudden, the whole place was in ruins, everything was on fire. Not just the area they are in, but the whole world. The Jackal Leader looks around, confused about where did this all come from.
"What the?" The Jackal Leader was confused.
He was distracted, allowing Eggman to punch him across the face and push him off the Egg Mobile.
"Oh ho ho ho ho ho ho ho." Eggman laughed.
The Jackal Squad has been rounded up by the new robots Eggman came up with instantly. They all have their hands locked behind their backs as they all look at the scientist. Eggman descends down on the leader with a gleeful smile.
"Whoever you are, I like you. You've seen what I have seen. I could tell you are amazed by the image you saw when struck my new prize. I believe we have something in common. And that is changing the world. How about I hire you to lead my new forces? Together, we can take over the world!" Eggman offered the leader of the mercenaries his hand.
"Don't listen to him, boss! We can be fine without him!" One jackal said.
The Jackal Leader does not listen. Instead, he starts chuckling. That chuckling turns into laughter.
"Interesting. Interesting indeed. All of the times I have been through. These motions, these are new to me. You know what, Eggman? Yes. Yes! I have grown tired of how this world is. Let's do it, new boss! I will help you change the world! For the better! For you!" The Jackal Leader said.
Eggman and the Jackal Leader share an evil laugh. They share a common goal in conquering the Earth. To form the ultimate Eggman Empire. With Eggman's newfound Phantom Ruby and the Jackal Squad now by his side, Eggman will be a much bigger threat than before. Soon, they will share a common enemy. That enemy being none other than Sonic the Hedgehog.
Note: This chapter picks up to where players would start the final boss and, if you collected all the Chaos Emeralds as Sonic, would fight the true final bosses. The ending connects to Sonic Forces, which has four digital prequel comics. These several chapters will be a set up for the main story of the actual game, including the prequel comics and the Episode Shadow DLC, which will have some changes. Besides this first chapter, Classic Sonic will NOT have a role in this redux unlike the game where he shows up and does nothing.
