A/N I was so excited to post the first chapter last time I forgot to write one of these here, oops. Anyway, this fic takes place in between the first two movies of How to Train Your Dragon and just after season 3 of Attack on Titan, before the craziness of the time skip. It's also going to take a few more chapters until the two groups meet, I wanted the chance to get to know how to write the character before the two interact, it also makes it fandom blind friendly (I hope!). Please enjoy!
"I love the solid ground!" Fishlegs said, sliding off of Meatlug. Meatlug made a sort of gurgling response and fell onto her side with her leg twitching.
The rest of the riders dismounted their dragons albeit not very gracefully. All of the riders began to stretch out their sore muscles with the exception of the twins who just pulled at each other's limbs and used other violent methods to ease the soreness from all of the flying.
"Ha! Fishlegs you've gotta eat the Yak dung!" Snotlout shouted
"Hey, Snotlout, that's not fair! We touched down at the same time!"
"No, I was obviously ahead of you."
"No you weren't, Snotlout," Astrid said.
"Wait if they both touched down at the same time-" Tuffnut began
"-Then they both have to eat yak dung!" Ruffnut finished, with her signature cackle on the end.
"How about, since it was a tie, nobody eats yak dung," Hiccup said
"Aw!"
"But that's no fun!" The Twins said.
"But where would we even get the yak dung?" Fishlegs asked, "We're not on Berk, and I haven't seen a yak in days."
"Wait, Hiccup, do you have any idea what island we're on?" Astrid asked.
"No, we flew off the edge of my map 2 days ago. Fishlegs, could I see yours again?"
"Yeah, give me a sec." Fishlegs walked up beside Meatlug and rummaged through the saddlebag until he pulled out a few yellowed maps that were slightly crinkled from being in the bag for so long.
Hiccup, not wanting to even look at what the twins were up to, rummaged around in his saddlebag making sure he didn't lose anything on their flight. He was still kicking himself for forgetting his spare, spare leg that he had just repaired, one could never be too prepared around the twins. He was also using Toothless's spare tail fin, the first one had been damaged in their first encounter with the Rockfin dragon. It wasn't comforting being so far from home without a spare and no way of making a new one.
"Here," Fishlegs said handing over the maps, "They got a bit crinkled from Meatlugs landing."
"That's alright," Hiccup said, flattening the maps out, "So when we first confronted the dragon we were about a day's flight from Berk which was here," Hiccup said, pointing between two islands on the map. Hiccup traced his hand over their exact flight path from the past five days.
"Now we're here," Hiccup said as his hand went off the last map, "In uncharted territory."
Toothless, who had been peering over Hiccup's shoulder the whole time gurgled.
"That's what I thought too, but I also have this, I got it from one of the trade ships," Fishlegs said unravelling another map, "It's drawn differently from the other and the scale is much larger than our maps but look, these smaller islands lineup here and here. And since we just came from that one then we have to be on this one, Paradis."
"Nice work, Fishlegs. But how can you read this?"
"When I spoke to the trader he told me the names of the places written. But he also said that the people of this island were called devils by this patch of land, Marley."
"I heard that the people here have horns," Tuffnut said, mimicking horns on his head with his fingers.
"I heard that they are 10 meters tall," Ruffnut said, getting on her tippy toes and throwing her arms up.
"Come on you two, when did you ever hear this?"
"From a trader."
"Duh."
"They also said the people here have fangs!"
"And that they eat people!"
Hiccup sighed and looked around, Fishlegs was shaking a little bit and Snotlout looked terrified.
"Do you guys see any 10-meter tall people?" Hiccup asked, "It's just a traders myth, they have lots of those. One trader probably started it because they found something valuable on this island and wanted to keep it to themselves."
"Let's just turn back Hiccup, we've lost the dragon anyway," Snotlout said trying to hide the squeakiness in his voice.
"There's nothing to worry about, if we can handle fire-breathing dragons, we can handle abnormally tall people."
Hiccup looked around at his friends, tired and scared Vikings were not a good combination. But he couldn't let this dragon roam free. He couldn't let his father down.
"How about this, we fly to the end of this island, we should make it there before nightfall. And if we don't find the Rockfin dragon in the morning we head home."
Everyone slowly nodded in agreement, some more reluctantly than others.
"Right, we'll leave in 15 minutes."
Armin walked over to Hange who was still seated by the fire pit.
"Commander, I have the supplies. Where did you want to start?"
Hange looked up and sighed, "We should take a detailed survey of the land to figure out exactly what we are working without here so we can build a sturdy outpost. But beyond that, I'm not too sure."
"That's a good start, Commander. These maps will be a lot more detailed than the ones we made when the titans were around. It'll be a lot easier!" Armin was originally trying to cheer up the commander but now he couldn't contain his excitement. Ever since he was little this is where he wanted to be, this is what he wanted to do: Explore, discover what was beyond the walls.
"That's the thing, Armin. For the longest time all the Survey Corps did was fight the titans and overcome the challenges they presented. But now that there are no more titans I have no idea how to lead you guys. We achieved our goal, now what? What is the goal of the Survey Corps now?"
Armin was silent for a moment, "I'm not sure, but it doesn't mean you won't figure it out."
"You're right Armin," Hange said getting up from their seat, "Let's get to work."
Armin smiled and followed Hange, by no means were surveying the land and creating maps fun but it's what you could do with them that was all the fun.
There is definitely something about this boy, Erwin, Hange thought, I just wish I knew how to bring it out like you did. Hange sighed, there was no time for thoughts like that, they couldn't change the past.
Hiccup and Toothless had wandered a bit south from the group a little ways down the island.
"How much further do you think we can go, bud?" Hiccup asked, sitting down on a rock.
Toothless responded with a tired hum sound which Hiccup interpreted as I don't know, I want to go see but I'm tired.
"Yeah, me too, bud."
Hiccup put his telescope to his eye and looked towards the horizon, there was no end to the island in sight. Knowing their flight speed they could make it to the horizon from here in no time but with everyone being so tired Hiccup wasn't sure anymore. He would be lying if he said he wasn't tired but he wasn't tired enough to stop, whenever it came to discovering new land or people or dragons he never got tired. The awe of a new discovery could keep him going for days as it had been. It could keep Fishlegs going for days too but those days had come and gone without discovering much.
"Anything interesting out there Hiccup?" Astrid said, taking his telescope and looking for herself.
"Well, there is no end to this island in sight, it's just grassy fields as far as the eye can see. And there are no signs of people or dragons just like the past few islands we've landed on. But Stormfly still has the scent of the Rockfin dragon and that thing is dangerous. If we don't stop it then-"
"Who knows what will happen? But you know stopping it means we have to, you know," Astrid made a throat-slitting motion.
"Kill it. I know… It's just, I…" Hiccup trailed off as Toothless shifted closer into his lap, Hiccup couldn't help but notice how sad Toothless's eyes had gotten. He didn't like killing dragons either.
"You don't like killing them, none of us do but that dragon has killed people and dragons alike with no remorse, we can't let it keep on going."
"You don't have to give me that speech, my dad already did. We should have just tried to kill it right when we first encountered it, then we wouldn't be in this mess."
"But if we did that, then we would be no better than the dragon. And you wouldn't have been able to forgive yourself for it, none of us would have been okay with that and you know it."
"Yeah, you're right. Thanks, Astrid."
"So, what are we going to do?"
"We have to find that dragon and kill it before it kills anyone else." Hiccup looked down at Toothless who met his gaze with his big green eyes and let out a soft purring grumble. Hiccup smiled and patted his head then he put his arm around Astrid pulling her in close.
They had a big mission ahead of them but Hiccup just wanted a moment where he didn't have to worry about anything.
Armin had a blast working with Hange, they were in the process of crafting different kinds of maps, one generalizing that area, another showing the dips and valleys inland, another finding the exact curves of the edge of the island. They had also been sketching and talking about different kinds of buildings that would be suitable for a base at the edge of the island.
There was only one downside to working with Hange and that was keeping up with all of their ideas.
"What if we incorporate the Marleyian wall into our design?" Armin asked, "We could easily defend it with cannons."
"True but if we want to use the remnants of the Marleyain port then the cannons could risk hitting our own boats. But there would be no point in using the port, it does look rather destroyed and there are stairs learning up to the top of the wall. We could always get rid of the stairs but then Marley would definitely know that something is going on here. I don't want to tip off Marley that we have gotten through the walls without proper defences to defend ourselves. Would this wall even hold up against Marleyian weapons? Would cannons even be effective against Marley's ships?! I wonder if there are any of Marley's weapons sunk off of the shore, maybe we could use Eren's titan to find them! He could accidentally crush them but maybe they're too big for him to crush. What kind of weapon could be so big that Eren couldn't crush it?! What if there is a weapon that is too big for you to crush? Imagine how big that would have to be?"
Armin blinked a few times, "So do we want to build our defences away from this wall then?"
"I think that would be best," Hange said, calming down from their excited ramble, "We should still map everything, just in case we change plans or come up with a better idea."
"Sounds like a plan commander!"
