A/N I'm so sorry this is late! I had a Chemistry test and a dance yesterday so this just fell off my plate. But thank you for all of the favourites and follows, they mean a lot! The next few chapters will be more about character interactions and comparing lives than the actual plot but let me know if there is anyone in particular that you want to see!
"They'll get friendlier as they warm up to you," Hiccup said, coming up beside Toothless.
"His name is Toothless, right?" Armin asked, his shining eyes firmly fixed on studying Toothless.
"Yeah."
"He's so cool! The only thing I've ever read about dragons were in storybooks! I never thought they were real."
"They're real, right bud," Hiccup said, patting Toothless's head.
Armin stared at Toothless, his blue eyes full of wonder, he was going to memorize every feature of this dragon, its pupils were black but the rest of the eye was green. His head was more flat than round and his nose was no more than two slits in between his eyes.
As Armin was memorizing Hiccup was thinking, he didn't miss Toothless's quizzical look before, there was something off about Armin's scent, why could that be? Hiccup paused his spiralling thoughts, It's probably because he is from a different race, he's someone new. But that thought didn't sit right with him.
Mikasa was more worried about filling up their water containers than meeting a dragon, they weren't going to eat her, not that she would let them eat her, and she had her orders. She knelt down by the pond and dipped her jug underneath the smooth surface creating bubbles and ripples on the surface. She thought that the dragons were a myth, but then again the dragon riders told tall tales of the titans. But it's not her decision to trust them, she definitely wouldn't be the first to show her trust towards them.
She was so lost in thought she almost didn't notice Eren kneel down beside her, almost. Eren didn't say much; he was gathering his thoughts as well. Eren was still a little shocked at this scenario, he didn't see it coming, which wasn't something that happened often anymore. But he was sure that he couldn't trust them, every time he had trusted an outsider they had betrayed him and people died.
Jean crouched down on the other side of Mikasa filling his water jug, "What do you think of the dragon riders?"
"Don't know," She curtly replied.
Jean nodded awkwardly, "It's pretty out here, isn't it?"
"I guess," Mikasa deadpanned. He could hear her eyes roll without even looking at them.
Jean looked down at his hands watching the bubbles come out of his jug, Mikasa was so hot but he couldn't get her to have a conversation with him.
"So, did you want to eat together tonight?" He asked, looking up at Mikasa. But all he was met with was Eren's confused gaze, "T-that wasn't meant for you!"
Eren rolled his eyes, sealed his jug, and walked away.
"You having girl trouble, me too," Snotlout said, slipping in beside Jean.
Jean snorted, "Yeah, with who."
"Astrid, you know, the cute one with the axe."
Jean looked over at Astrid, she was very cute, her blond hair reflected the sun's rays in such a beautiful way and her bangs made her face look perfect. But she also looked like a warrior, someone who can defend herself, much like Mikasa.
"She has her eyes set on Hiccup but I'm clearly the better option. Who would choose a one-legged boy stick over a muscular Viking like me?"
"Sounds like you need the help more than me."
"Maybe we could compare notes."
Jean just stared at him, it wasn't a bad idea per se but there was something holding him back.
"Come on. Even Hookfang thinks it's a good idea," Snotlout said, gesturing behind Jean. Jean turned around to see a red dragon, with the sharpest teeth he had ever seen sticking out of the bottom of its jaw, taking a sip of water from the pond rolling its eyes.
"Sure…" Jean said meekly, he was sure that his face had gotten a few shades lighter.
"Hey, Horseface! How long does it take you to fill up a water jug?" Connie shouted with Sasha snickering behind him.
"Ha, Horseface," Tuffnut said,
"Nice one," Ruffnut added with a cackle.
"Really Connie!" Jean shouted.
"What have the twins gotten themselves into now?" Hiccup muttered to no one in particular. He had just finished packing his stuff and Toothless was still on edge even but he was trying to hide it.
"What is it bud?" He whispered.
Toothless moaned and nodded his head towards Armin, who was now kneeling next to the pond and sniffed again.
"Is there something off with his scent?" Hiccup asked.
Toothless nodded with wide eyes.
"Do you know what it means, bud?"
Toothless shook his head.
"Okay, I'll keep an eye on him," Hiccup stood up and brushed off his pants, "Are you guys ready to go?" He looked around only to see the twins laughing with Sasha and Connie and Astrid slapping the back of Snotlout's head.
"You can't just let Hookfang scare people, Snotlout!" Astrid shouted. It was only then he noticed Jean looking paler than any Viking he had ever seen.
"Does your dragon have a name?" Sasha asked.
"Mine's Barf."
"Mine's Belch," The twins replied.
"But, they're the same dragon…" Connie trailed off.
"No-"
"They have to heads-"
"Therefore they're two different dragons," The twins said
"I don't think that's how it works," Connie said, scratching his head.
"But it makes sense, our horses each have their own head."
"Our horses also have their own bodies."
"But what makes a horse, a body or its head?" Tuff asked.
Sasha and Connie locked eyes, they had no idea how to respond.
"Well a body physically makes a horse but a head makes everything else," Ruffnut said, looking over at Sasha and Connie's confused faces, "The body is just what you sit on, the head thinks for the horse or dragon and it's what controls it."
"I guess that makes sense," Connie said, although he wasn't too sure what they were trying to get at.
Captain Levi rolled his eyes, he had been keeping a watchful eye on all of his brats in case one of the dragons or the Vikings decided they didn't want to play nice anymore. But he couldn't help himself from getting lost in thought for a second. I thought we were done with surprises, now some mythical creatures show up. And their riders seem to know less about Marley than we do. Levi sighed, he felt useless, there were no titans to kill anymore, just people. And even then he wasn't in direct combat right now, he missed that adrenaline rush that came with slaying titans left, right, and center.
"Aren't they so cool!" Hange squealed, pulling Levi from his thoughts.
"Huh?"
"The dragons, Levi! They're tamer than most horses around strangers and they all have distinct personalities!"
"Hange," Levi warned, but they kept on going.
"They all look so unique but are clearly all dragons! They all have reptilian features and wings but have such different wing sizes and spans. And different colours with different builds and limb makeup. Even their teeth vary! Do they have different diets from one another? Are some more adapted to hunting? What would they even hunt? Other dragons?"
"Hange!"
"Oh, sorry, Levi. Did you say something?"
"Try not to geek out over the dragons as you did for the titans. Now isn't-"
"Awe come on, Levi. They are so much more interesting than titans, they've got so much more variation! I've got so many questions!"
"They can wait. Now isn't the time to be a scientist, four-eyes. We don't even know if they're trustworthy."
"There is always time for discovery, Levi!"
"Damnit, four-eyes," Levi muttered as Hange sped off towards Fishlegs. They had some questions that they wanted to ask about his dragon, particularly about its wings.
Levi sighed, as soon as he looked into Hange's eye he knew that he had no hope of stopping them. Their eyes had this glow about them that he had only ever seen when Hange was performing or talking about titan experiments. He just hoped that the poor boy was ready for an onslaught of questions.
