CHAPTER NINE

Monday, 7th October 1990
The next few weeks of September passed by quickly and soon the chilly October air filled the grounds. Monday morning, at quarter to seven found Reyna and Rylan in the Room of Requirement, heads bent as they spoke to their mother on the mirror.
"So how have you been?" came Felicity's voice, looking at them through her own eyes, her enchanted glasses having been removed and kept aside for a while. Her eyes scanned her children's faces before looking at them expectantly.
It was Reyna who answered," Everything's going pretty well so far. Nothing new."
Felicity raised an eyebrow before saying," You're in Hogwarts, something new happens every time. No pranks? No detentions?"
Rylan said jokingly," Aw, come on mum, you think you brought up children who don't know how to mind their manners?"
"As I recall, it was the very same child who laughed at his Potions professor for being called dunderhead," came their mum's dry reply and he grinned.
"Snape's good. I've managed not to land into any detention so far with him, and I'm good with all the other teachers," he reported.
"And you, Queen?" asked Felicity, turning her attention to her daughter, who was listening with a small smile.
She gave a shrug," Same, I've made friends with Fred and George and some of the other Gryffindors and it's all going well. Nothing in class is too difficult."
Felicity looked at them before saying," And the lessons? You're telling me that all the spells you're learning you can both do them effortlessly?"
The twins exchanged looks as they saw their mother's frown," Is that a bad thing?" asked Rylan cautiously.
Felicity's eyes sharpened as she said," No, but it's going to raise suspicion. It's rare for people to be able to perform spells at their first try."
"But you and the rest of the Culberts did," pointed out Reyna.
Felicity waved her hand," In our case it was different," she seemed deep in thought before Rylan said," It's not that all the spells are easy for us, just that they aren't that hard. Yesterday I had to repeat the transfiguration spell three times before I got it right."
Felicity looked at them, her frown clearing as she said," Al right then, keep up your progress in class. How's your dueling going?"
"I've beaten Rylan in most of them," said Reyna smugly, grinning at her brother's scowl.
"Only because I'm not very good at ducking and she's too quick," he said before adding quickly," But I've managed to beat her in some as well mum."
Felicity laughed," Al right then, don't forget to practice the full body shield often. And pull atleast one prank before the holidays come."
Reyna winked," Don't worry. Actually, one's about to be pulled today."
Felicity raised an eyebrow," Oh? And what's the prank?" despite herself, her voice sounded eager.
"Well, let's just say there's a charm we've learnt in the library that'll switch all the students' robes into their rivalries house colours, including the teachers. Which means Slytherin and Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, even though the last two are quite popular with each other. Then we'll make miniatures stuffed lions on every Slytherin's head, miniature snakes on every Gryffindors, miniature ravens and badgers on every Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw," explained Rylan.
Felicity grinned," Sounds good. Anything else?"
"Well, we were thinking of turning the House tables into beds," added Reyna sheepishly," with the animals sleeping on them."
The spell would have been too complicated for any first year but it was something that was invented by Zonko's a few years back. Rather simple, really, but it was designed to look complicated to give off the impression that the pranksters were advanced in magic. Because it was a prank spell, the transfiguration would only last not more than ten minutes-which the twins thought was enough time for th effect to take place.
Felicity burst out laughing at that, saying," I wish I was there. It'd be worth it to see Severus' face."
The twins beamed at their mum's indirect praise before Reyna said," We've got to go get ready for the big prank. We're waiting till most of the students have arrived before pulling it, invisible, and on a broom way above everyone."
Felicity gave them a last smile before nodding and saying," Just make sure you don't fall. Bye."
Reyna and Rylan looked at each other before identical grins formed on their faces," The faces I'm really looking forward to seeing are the Weasley twins," said Reyna.
"Agreed. How do you think they'd feel knowing there was a new prankster out to replace them?" said Rylan mischievously.
Reyna chuckled," Replaced most likely. Come on Rye, time to put our plan into action."
At exactly eight thirty Rylan stood positioned on of the school broom, hovering on top of the students who were chattering noisily as they ate. By then the Hall was quite full, with just a few other students entering now and then.
Rylan looked directly across him, where he knew Reyna was also positioned, waiting for the signal. He took out his wand before waving it in a circular pattern and muttering softly. With bated breath, he looked down at the students, before grinning widely as the robes began changing, so subtly and slowly that it was a minute before the students began noticing.
His grinned widened as he saw the professors robes also changing, with Snape looking at disgust and anger at his own red and gold coloured robes. That was Reyna.
The students were muttering now, with the Slytherins glowering at the Gryffindors, particularly the Weasley twins, who were looking bemused and slightly horrified.
"Bloody hell."
"What the-"
"I'm in Slytherin! I'm in bloody Slytherin!"
"Shut it! It's obviously a prank you idiot. No doubt those Weasleys have got something to do with it."
Rylan tried not to laugh as he waved his wand again, flying directly above the Slytherins and transfiguring small lions on top of their heads, before moving to the rest of the house tables. The Slytherin girls had leaped up and were clutching their lions, some trying to yank them off their heads but Rylan had cast a temporary sticking charm to them.
He grinned as he finished with the Gryffindors, laughing silently at their amazed looks as they saw the serpents on their heads. Many looked at the Weasley twins, who were now sporting slightly impressed looks though protesting," It wasn't us. I admit it's brilliant but we've been here the whole time!"
"Professor! Look at what's happening," a student was shouting at Professor Dumbledore, who was twinkling at them and looking at his deep green and silver robes.
Snape was glaring at the students and Rylan was shaking as he struggled to control his mirth. Reyna meanwhile, was grinning at Marcus Flint, who was looking outrage with his robes and had taken out his wand to change them back. Her grin widened as she saw his deep scowl at not succeeding. The young witch waited a bit before flying carefully and smoothly directly above the center of the house tables and waving her wand, her face a look of deep concentration. Her aim was careful as she muttered the spell, and within seconds, in place of the House Tables was now long, thick beds that still sported food.
Laughter rang around the room as some of the students pointed at it, the first years looking in delight at the display of magic. Pleased that most of the students were enjoying the prank, Reyna sharpened her senses, feeling a powerful pull in the corner of the Hall. She flew towards there, saying in a low voice over the excited yellings of the students," Rye, you there?"
"Here," her twin's voice grinned at her as he continued," Let's fly out, we can leave the brooms next to the door and return them later. Nobody'll notice."
Reyna voiced her agreement and they flew smoothly, landing outside and, after pulling themselves in an empty corridor, removed their charms and charmed their robes opposite their house colours, with stuffed animals to match.
They took one look at each other and burst out laughing," It was worth it! Merlin, did you see Snape's face when his robes changed colour?" said Rylan with a grin.
"Forget Snape, Marcus looked ready to burst when he saw his countercharm was unsuccessful. Plus Fred and George were looking pretty confused," answered Reyna with a laugh.
"Mum'd have loved to see this," said Rylan.
Reyna nodded," C'mon, let's go join the show."
When they entered they went straight to their friends, wearing identical puzzled looks as they sat down.
"What's going on?" asked Reyna innocently, looking at her friends with a bewildered look.
"Some idiot charmed us to wear Gryffindor robes," said Vaisey in disgust.
"And permanently kept these lions on our heads," said Enoch distastefully.
"I think they're cute," sniffed Gianna.
Reyna nodded at the bed, unable to stop her grin," What's with the bed?"
"I'm guessing it's our breakfast table," said Delilah dryly.
"You've got to admit though, it's pretty impressive transfiguration. Wonder who did it," said Zachary in admiration.
Reyna bent to reach for a kipper, hiding a grin at the praise.
"They say it's probably those Weasley twins," said Enoch with a shrug.
"Impossible though, they've been here the whole time," said Delilah at once.
"Anyway, whoever did it deserves applause, it was brilliant," beamed Gianna, stroking the stuffed lion that was perched elegantly on her brown hair.
Enoch snorted and rolled her eyes, but Reyna's grin widened and she said to Enoch," Come on, you've got to admit seeing Snape's face was funny."
Despite himself a smile crossed his lips before Zachary said," C'mon, better get ready for class."
Felicity had entered Training Room 4, where she would be doing tracking and poisons when a loud group suddenly entered with Kingsley. They stopped as they saw her and one of the boys jerked his head at her, saying," Who's she?"
Kingsley gave Felicity a brief smile before saying in a rather curt voice," That's Felicity Cade. Now, about the-"
"Yes, but what's she doing here? She's not an Auror, nor's she a trainee like us so she has no right to be here," the boy objected, looking at Felicity with distrust clear in his eyes.
Felicity looked at him with a raised eyebrow as Kingsley snapped," Whether she has rights to be here or not is none of your concern, Axton."
Axton turned red before glaring at him and looking sulky. Honestly, Rylan was better behaved than this seventeen-year-old boy.
Kingsley gave out instructions before turning to another boy who was crouched down. Axton sauntered towards Felicity before pointedly ignoring her going over to look at one of the poisons, holding a quill and parchment in hand.
Just as Felicity was straightening a spell came her way and her instincts warned her. She pulled out her wand and wordlessly summoned a shield charm to absorb the spell. Once she was sure that the coast was clear she walked over to the surprised Axton and said coldly," Do not even think of repeating that again. I don't know what I have done to offend you, but whatever it is I do not take kindly to being hexed."
Axton scowled at her before saying," What are you doing here?"
"That's none of your business," said Felicity shortly, before grabbing her own parchment and heading towards Kingsley. She smiled as she said," Here you go, all necessary information filled out."
Kingsley took it with a quick scan before returning the smile," I don't know why they don't just put you in the Auror force already. You'd rise in ranks quickly."
Felicity grinned," Moody wants to see one in progress and doesn't like to rush in without seeing full potential being displayed."
Kingsley looked slightly surprised," You sound like you know him well, yet he's been with you for a month."
"I'm just observant," said Felicity lightly before adding," He said if I finish this quick enough I can take a break till tomorrow."
Kingsley nodded," Alright then. Catch you later."
With a quick wave Felicity parted and left, not bothering going to the Headquarters and instead heading straight to the lifts. Once in the lifts she encountered no one, so she left, checking quickly with old Henry before leaving the Ministry. It was rare for her to finish training before four, and as it was almost two in the afternoon she decided she might as well go and visit Pandora and Luna.
She flooed to her house before apparating outside the wards of the Lovegood's house. She walked slowly towards the grey painted house and reached the front door quite soon. She raised her hand and knocked gently before waiting patiently.
Pandora opened the door, and her eyes looked puzzled before her brow cleared and she smiled at Felicity," Ah, I wondered when you'd come to visit again."
Felicity smiled back and entered as Pandora waved her in, looking around and asking," Where's Luna?"
"Luna's gone to the Weasleys for a while. She said she'd be back at three," explained Pandora, leading her to her study-the very study she had almost died in a month ago.
"Tea? Water? Juice?" she offered after Felicity had taken a seat on one of the soft blue armchairs.
"Just pumpkin juice is alright," said Felicity, watching as her friend left the room.
Her eyes looked around curiously. It was not very large, but comfortable and with enough space. The room was painted a light grey, similar to the exterior of the house, and a painting of the family was in a portrait, though not moving as the family stared around with big smiles. Luna looked very cute in robes of blue grey to match her eyes, and Pandora had worn the same, their long dirty blonde hair framing their heart shaped faces. Xenophilius Lovegood was wearing a small faraway grin, his arm around Pandora's waist.
Felicity tore her eyes away from the portrait, feeling a bit painful since there was no picture of Aidan and her with their own kids. She looked around the rest of the study, seeing the pile of neatly arranged notes on the black table, and the fine china on top of the red shelf-the only colour out of place. Just then Pandora entered, levitating a tray of juice and biscuits in front of her and smiling brightly.
"How've you been, Jas?" she asked then hastily added, seeing a slight warning in the brunette's eyes," It's only me and you in the house. Xeno's gone out and won't be back for another two hours. I can assure you there's nothing or no one to spy on us."
Felicity nodded, looking a bit more relaxed before saying," I've been well thanks. How have you been coping? Have the experiments gone well so far?"
Pandora nodded," Quite well. Xeno's been quite overprotective though, checking in every now and then to make sure I'm alright."
"And Luna?"
"Luna's been spending more time with Ginny, and reading a lot of books, though that's normal for her. What surprised me though, is that she said she'd like to research on spells a bit, to get to know the theory behind it and all," said Pandora, looking at Felicity meaningfully.
Felicity raised her eyebrows," Interesting, what kind of spells is she interested in?"
"Protective spells and charms," said Pandora in an amused voice.
Felicity couldn't help grinning affectionately before saying," Well, tell her that I'd be willing to help her any time she wants. She'll be going to Hogwarts soon and she'll learn more there."
Pandora nodded," I think she'll be a Ravenclaw, though she says if she isn't there then she'll likely be a Gryffindor."
"I think she'd make a very nice lion," said Felicity with a smile.
Pandora got a wistful look in her eyes as she said," I'm a bit worried about her, and going to Hogwarts may seem a bit difficult."
Felicity looked at her enquiringly," Why? Luna's perfectly capable of taking care of herself."
An anxious look crossed he blonde's eyes," She…well, I've noticed that Luna doesn't really spend much time with other people. It's pretty much just Ginny Weasley whom she's interested in, and her father and I, and now you. I've tried to set up playdates but they've not gone well."
Felicity looked at her friend carefully before saying," Pandora, you'll hate to hear me say this, but Luna will learn to take care of herself. If there's something I know about your daughter, is that she's strong and smart, it'd take someone with serious brains to outwit her."
Pandora smiled faintly," I'm glad you think so," she suddenly straightened and said in a slight brisk tone," How is the war outside going on?"
Felicity gave a small chuckle," I should be the one asking you that. After all, for the past twelve years my home has been Africa."
"Jasira, you may have been gone for twelve years but you're still the same. I'm sure you've been keeping up with the daily news in Britain and whatnot," said Pandora seriously.
Jasira laughed," Then you'll know that I know the same things you know," her expression grew more serious as she said," There was an attack on one of the villages, I'm sure you've heard, and we lost one Auror. After that though, there've been more attacks more often. It's as though Voldemort's up to something. I mean, the attacks were continuous but now it's as though he's looking for something."
"Or someone," said Pandora quietly.
Felicity looked at her sharply.
"I think the reason behind so many planned attacks is because You Know Who is looking for you, or rather, Jasira Sergey. It was all in the papers that you had saved me and Luna, and you know the number of times he's tried to recruit you to join him. I wouldn't be surprised if the main reason is because of you Jas," explained Pandora.
Felicity looked at her silently before closing her eyes," I knew coming back here was a mistake," she muttered.
"Yes but remember your reasons for coming here. You're not the only one in danger," said Pandora wisely.
"Pandora!"
The two women turned sharply before getting up, with Pandora grimacing slightly and saying apologetically," I'll be just a minute."
Felicity waited patiently and looked up as her friend returned, her grimace more pronounced," Luna's hurt herself flying on a broom. It's just a small twist but Molly asked if I could be there quickly. I'm very sorry Jas."
Felicity smiled," It's fine, give my regards to Luna."
Pandora nodded as they walked towards the door.
Saturday, 12th October 1990
Felicity felt the days flying by as she practiced hard every day. It was rare for Moody to let anyone off lightly, and it came as a surprise when, on the twelfth of October, he walked towards her with his trademark scowl on his face.
"Cade, I want you to take a day off today," he said gruffly, his electric blue eyes swinging madly.
Felicity looked at him in surprise," Day off? Why?"
Despite himself, the Head of Trainees looked amused," What, you want to stay cooped up here every day?"
Felicity shrugged," Why the sudden break though?"
"You've been working hard," muttered Moody, looking a bit annoyed.
Felicity grinned," Well, well, is Alastor Moody actually praising me?" she said teasingly.
Moody scowled," Don't make me change my mind."
Felicity quirked an eyebrow," I wouldn't mind if you did. Thanks though!" she called as he began moving away, shaking his head.
Felicity left the training room-only to bump into Remus. She immediately averted her eyes, because looking at him reminded her of that night.
The Marauder offered her a smile," Where are you off to? I'd have thought Moody wouldn't let you off quite easily."
Felicity's tone had lost its usual tightness. She spoke more to Remus than to the others, but she still couldn't make herself be friendly. It felt too much like betrayal to Aidan. She didn't smile (she rarely did anyway), but instead nodded," Moody's given me a break for today."
Remus's eyebrows shot up in surprise," A break?" he gave a small chuckle before saying," You must have been working hard. He never gives a person a break."
Felicity looked pleased with herself then said," I'll be off then."
She was about to leave when Remus suddenly said," Wait! Where are you off to?"
Felicity hesitated," I was planning on going to Diagon Alley. One of my children needs something," she said reluctantly.
Remus smiled brightly as he said," I'll come with you. I'm free as well, and if the others need me I'll know."
Felicity looked alarmed," I wouldn't want to trouble you. I'm sure you have other things to do right now."
Remus waved her off," No, it'd be nice to get to know you more. James and Sirius aren't free now."
Felicity looked as though she might protest but Remus wouldn't let her. He seemed determined to get his way," I'll not be a nuisance," he said jokingly.
Felicity let loose a small smile.
And that was how they found themselves in Diagon Alley at eleven thirty in the morning, enjoying the breeze as they strolled through the streets. The witches and wizards there seemed to be scuttling around rather afraid and wary, though some had on fake smiles as they tried to enjoy the day. It seems there wouldn't be any enjoyment as long as Voldemort was around, thought Felicity sadly.
"Where do you want to be off to first?" Remus asked, looking at her as she watched a poster of the Holyhead Harpies.
"Anywhere would be alright," Felicity muttered.
Remus looked at her fully before saying," There's a new coffee shop that's opened up next to Flourish and Blotts. We could go there for a while before doing a spot of shopping."
Felicity looked at him suspiciously. She saw the sincerity in his eyes and found herself saying," Sure."
The coffee shop was quite comfortable, and the two of them chose a seat in the middle of the room. the waitress came to take their order as soon as they were seated on one of the rectangular table across each other," I'd like ginger tea and chocolate cake," said Remus with a small smile.
Felicity flicked her eyes over the menu before saying," Chocolate cake and pumpkin juice please."
Remus looked at her in surprise as the waitress left," But it's cold!" he protested.
Felicity shrugged," I'm not much for tea."
"Well, I have to drink atleast 3 cups per day to function," said Remus with a smile.
The words 'I know' were almost out of her mouth before she stopped herself.
Remus was watching her closely then said," I don't really know much about you, Felicity."
Felicity looked at him and raised her eyebrows," What would you want to know about me?" despite herself, her tone came out slightly sharp and she mentally winced. Way to keep a cool façade, Jas! she chided herself.
Remus raised both his hands but said," Why did you come back to Britain?"
Felicity frowned slightly," What makes you think I came back?"
She saw a small smirk forming on the Marauder's face and felt slightly uneasy. But Remus said innocently," It's just what I heard from Moody the other day."
Felicity hesitated before saying," I came because of my children. I wanted them to go to Hogwarts. I've heard a lot about it."
Was it just herself or did Remus grow slightly apprehensive? Felicity suddenly thought that there might be more to his offering in coming with her than just being friendly. Her emotionless mask appeared on her face and she quickly busied herself with the chocolate cakes that had appeared on their table. Levitated, she thought, as the juice and tea also landed gently in front of them.
"But surely you've heard of the war? Britain's not quite safe as it used to be," he gestured sadly outside.
"War won't stop me from enjoying my time, and unless I'm wrong, Hogwarts is one of the safest places to be in," said Felicity, taking a sip of her juice.
Remus didn't respond then said," Your children, they're first years, aren't they?"
Felicity nodded.
The Marauder leaned his elbows on the table before asking casually," What's their houses?"
Felicity had spent enough time with all the Marauders to know that their behaviour when they were up to something. Remus was tactful yes, and asked questions that anyone else would ask, but it was his expression when he got the answer that made Felicity feel as if he was looking for something. Suddenly though, she didn't quite care. Let him try to find out if he wanted, I won't let him in, she thought fiercely.
So she put on a smile and said," Reyna's in Slytherin and Rylan's in Gryffindor."
He let out a chuckle," A bit unexpected."
"Not quite, they follow in their family's footsteps," said Felicity sweetly.
Remus quirked an eyebrow and there was a small silence as the two of them looked around. The werewolf spoke up after a bit," What made you choose to be an Auror? It's very dangerous."
"It makes me feel as though I'm in an interrogation," said Felicity with a tilt of her head.
Remus looked a bit sheepish," Sorry, I'm curious."
Felicity reached for a piece of chocolate cake as she said," Well, an Auror wasn't the first job that came to mind, but it was the one with the most action and I wanted it."
Remus looked at her in disbelief," No offence, but it's honestly the most childish reason I've ever heard."
Felicity laughed," I agree, but I've always wanted to be out trying to be doing something good than just doing paperwork. It can be fun, but it's a bit boring."
"You'd get along well with Sirius. He's all about action and fun, he and James," chuckled Remus.
"Lords Potter and Black are quite close, aren't they?" said Felicity.
Remus waved aside," They don't like all the airs and graces of the Wizengamot, which is why they prefer James and Sirius. But yes, they are quite close, practically family."
"Quite a large family then, rarely time for sadness," remarked Felicity, a faint sound of bitterness in her voice.
Remus stiffened," I doubt sadness will ever be absent from anyone's life," he murmured.
Felicity looked at him before saying," I think we can go to Flourish and Blotts once we're done. There's a book I need to purchase."
Remus nodded, grateful for the change of topic and they finished quickly. Flourish and Blotts was practically empty as they entered and they both greeted the clerk's man before Remus asked," Which section?"
"Charms," answered Felicity and they both headed there.
Remus looked curious as she took a book titled Mind Magic: ways to help protect and shield the mind. He didn't say anything though and they left quickly after that.
They spent quite a while walking through shops and buying small things, and Remus kept her well entertained with stories of their schooldays as they sat in the Leaky Cauldron eating lunch. What amused Felicity though, as she listened quietly to him retell the time when Jasira and Lily had teamed up to turn the Marauder's robes and hair different colours, was that she had been there and it was actually Lily who had come up with the idea to do that.
"Jas was extremely talented when it came to pranks and charms, and made us feel threatened at times with her ideas. Sirius felt as though she'd beat us anytime she wanted," said Remus fondly.
Felicity couldn't help smiling and said," I heard she was close to you."
Remus smiled wistfully," She was a Marauderess as well, actually."
"Ah yes, the Marauders, known mischief makers of Britain," said Felicity, looking teasing.
Remus smiled proudly," You should be scared of being in the presence of one," he said, making his tone important and intimidating.
Felicity laughed," You're not good at that, and none of you seem at all scary."
Remus looked offended," We are good at it. Why, I'll have you know that people were actually quite scared of talking to us in our schooldays."
"I believe that was because they were scared of being pranked," said Felicity dryly before adding," and I think it's good when one isn't scary. It makes them friendlier and more approachable."
"Are you saying we're not friendly or approachable?" asked Remus, looking mock serious.
Felicity was silent long enough for Remus to think he'd said something wrong but then she answered quietly," Yes, you are friendly." She didn't say and approachable.
Felicity looked at the time. Quarter to two. They'd spent more than two hours.
"I think I'd better head home soon," said Felicity, taking the last sip of pumpkin juice that she had again ordered.
Remus looked disappointed but nodded," I promised Sirius and James I'd meet them in Godric's Hollow at two."
They both stood up, heading towards the fireplace.
"Thank you," said Felicity quietly.
Remus shrugged," Don't mention it," he hesitated then simply smiled at her but didn't say anything more.
Felicity looked at him keenly before heading towards the fireplace and disappearing.
"Moony!" greeted Sirius as soon as Remus appeared in the living room. He stood up to hug him exaggeratedly, shooting looks at James as he said," I haven't seen you in ages! Prongs was too busy with paperwork to play with his best mate."
James rolled his eyes," We're no longer children to 'play' Padfoot, leave those terms for the kids."
Sirius pouted," See what I had to deal with?"
Remus sighed and headed towards the sofa next to James," Where's Lily? And the kids?"
"Harry and Nat are over at Molly's and Lily won't be back till five at the latest," answered James.
Sirius lounged on the armchair before sighing," We've just had lunch an hour ago. Sorry Moony, but James finished everything."
"I believe it was you who ate all the treacle tart pudding that was left," retorted James before adding," wait till Harry and Lily find out you've eaten the remains of it."
Sirius gulped.
"It's fine, I ate lunch with Felicity so I'm not quite hungry," said Remus, peering at the paperwork James was doing," a bit late for an enquiry now. This should have been done a week ago."
"With who?" Sirius looked surprised and a bit disbelieving.
"Yeah, did you say Felicity Moony?" James had trouble hiding his own shock.
"As in, the brunette who shuts everyone off with a single look?" added Sirius. He still remembered the way Felicity had treated him at the Ministry in the lifts.
Remus laughed before nodding," Yes, Felicity Cade, Auror in trainee, unless there's another Felicity we know?"
Sirius shook his head," Wow. She agreed to it?"
Remus eyed him oddly," Why wouldn't she?"
James saved him from answering," It's just, I get the feeling she avoids us most of the time."
"Well, I did have to persuade her before she agreed," admitted Remus.
"What did you two do?" asked Sirius, looking interested.
"She wanted something for one of her children," shrugged Remus.
"Ah yes, the Cade twins," nodded James.
"You've met them?" asked Sirius in surprise.
"No but Lily told me they were in Gryffindor and Slytherin. It was because of them that Nat and Harry have the IPod thingy right now," explained James.
"That seemed weird, having an IPod I mean since they don't even exist here. The only ones who have them are our families," said Sirius thoughtfully.
"Lily said Lucy had given it to Felicity as a present," said James.
"She seems extremely close to the Culbert family," noticed Remus.
"Yet Sam said Felicity was acting hostile the other day," countered Sirius.
"Yes but do you think perhaps she might know where…" James trailed off, looking meaningfully at them.
Sirius looked at him sharply," Don't, James. Jasira," he gritted his teeth as he said the name," cut us off from her life a long time ago."
James and Remus exchanged looks," Padfoot, you can't blame her. It was our fault for doing what we did and-"
"Twelve years, Moony. Twelve years of ignorance. That's practically a sign that says she doesn't want us anymore," snapped Sirius.
"Sirius mate, how would you feel if Marlene was suddenly taken away from you, paralysed and not at all able to do anything, and you find out the people who did that to her were the very ones who were supposed to be her family and friends. How would you feel?" James snapped back.
Sirius backed down and covered his face in his hands," It's just, sometimes I wonder if she even thinks about us anymore," his voice was barely a whisper.
Remus said gently," There's no use thinking about that now. We need to focus on what actually happened that night and how to set things right when we find her."
James shot him a grateful look and they changed the subject.
Gianna groaned as they flopped down in the common room with their books around them," three essays to complete, and McGonagall wants us to complete her transfiguration practical by next week."
Delilah eyed her friend's pile of work," Well, Snape had assigned that work two days ago Gianna."
Gianna scowled at her," I was busy."
"Yeah, busy going through Witch Weekly for the day," said Enoch with distaste.
"Hey Reyna, how many assignments have you left to complete?" asked Zachary, looking at the brown haired girl bent over one of her books.
"Two essays only," she answered before returning to her book.
Delilah reached over and snatched it from her hands, ignoring her annoyed cries," The Little House," she read aloud before looking at it curiously.
"I've never heard of it," said Zachary, peering behind Delilah's shoulder.
"That's because it's a muggle book," said Reyna, before snatching it back.
Delilah looked interested," What does it talk about?"
Reyna shrugged," Just a small house that's been newly discovered."
"You make it sound boring," complained Zachary.
Reyna grinned," A small girl who ran away finds a house that's hidden and makes a home there. She becomes famous and later on and finds the family that abandoned her."
"It sounds sad," said Gianna.
"It is, actually, but it's also good," answered Reyna. She tucked the book in her bag before saying," So, Sprout and Flitwick's essay. Shouldn't be hard."
"That's because you're good at essays," grumbled Gianna.
"Excuse me," said a small voice from behind them.
They turned, and saw a Slytherin first year looking at Reyna. Reyna recalled him to be Colan Slade.
"Yes?" she said politely.
Colan looked at the others nervously before saying," I just wanted to see if you could help me with transfiguration. I can't seem to get it and I thought perhaps because you're good at it then maybe you could help."
Enoch snorted and Reyna shot him a glare. She smiled at Colan before saying," Sure. So what part don't you understand about it?"
As Reyna went on to help the boy, Enoch scowled at him and Delilah nudged him," What's wrong with you?"
He scowled at her," Nothing," and said no more.
But when Colan got the transfiguration wrong on his third try he couldn't stop himself snapping," Stop looking as though you're about to cry. You'll get it soon enough, if your brain's capable anyway."
The others were silent and Reyna glared at Enoch before saying softly to Colan," Ignore him. Look, just concentrate on changing the cushion to a quill. Don't focus too hard on it. The key is to imagine, see it forming slowly in your mind as you say the incantation."
Colan seemed to be even more nervous but grasped his wand determinedly and closed his eyes. He muttered the incantation, before smiling happily as he saw the quill in place.
Reyna nodded encouragingly," With a bit more practice you'll be able to do it easily enough."
He shot her a smile," Thanks," before flicking his eyes to Enoch, who was looking sulky and went back to his dorm.
Reyna whirled on Enoch," What, exactly, was your problem?" she demanded.
"Enlighten us please, Enoch. Your behaviour wasn't acceptable," said Gianna, looking disapproving.
Enoch glared at both of them," The idiot couldn't attempt a simple transfiguration spell."
Delilah rolled her eyes," Please, as though you managed it on your first try."
Zachary spoke up," He's angry because Slade's father made his father look foolish in front of Lord Culbert and the others in the last Wizengamot meeting."
Reyna's heart rate quickened at the mention of her uncle. Despite herself, a small smile crossed her face.
Enoch saw it and said grumpily," Glad to know you find my family name's humiliation funny, Reyna."
Reyna waved him away," I don't even know what happened, and I'm sure whatever it is Lord Culbert won't hold it against your father."
Gianna looked at her curiously," You sound as though you know him."
"He's been in the papers long enough," said Reyna dismissively before asking," what was the meeting about anyway?"
"Usual talks anyway, politics and such. Some of the things said were about the war and a few Ministry parties. It's said that Lord Culbert is in the process of a campaign, something about dropping all these titles of Lords and Ladies," said Gianna, sounding annoyed as she said it.
They looked at her in surprise and she said defensively," What? It was there in Witch Weekly," she shot a smug look at Enoch," Not so useless now, is it?"
He didn't respond but Reyna did, and her tone was so full of surprise that the others were taken aback," He's what? But why?"
"Dunno, something to do with it being too old fashioned or something. Apparently Lady Sergey was the one who was all up for the idea but with her being out of Britain her brother took it upon himself to do that," shrugged Gianna.
Delilah was watching Reyna and as the others were talking, she asked quietly," What's wrong?"
Reyna shook her head," Nothing."
"Cathy! I'm telling mum you disobeyed her and flew around the house," yelled Aaron, scowling at his small sister as she landed on the ground.
Catherine stuck her tongue out at him," Telltale."
Aaron made a face at him," You break your arm it'll be all my fault for letting you fly. Then mum's going to think I'm irresponsible."
Cathy said cheekily," You are," then ran inside the house," I'm flooing to Jasmine's!" she yelled.
Aaron sighed before following and taking three-year-old Thora. He looked mournfully at his baby sister," You're the only one who listens."
Thora blinked green blue eyes at him before saying," Jazz! Jazz!"
Aaron sighed but dutifully flooed them both to Grimmauld Place. He greeted his Aunt Marlene as he sat Thora on the ground.
"Hi Aunt Marls. Is Cathy here?" he asked the blonde woman, watching as she sat eating a pumpkin pasty.
"Me want one too!" Thora said eagerly, holding her hand and watching in delight as it zoomed into her hand.
Aaron looked scandalized," Thora!" he scolded his sister but Marlene laughed.
"There are more pasties in the larder, and yes, Cathy's here. She's gone up to Jazz," she answered, waving at the larder.
Aaron smiled in relief before saying," Jacob?"
"Jacob's gone over to the Weasleys to play. Nathan and Harry are there as well," said Marlene.
Aaron looked at Thora, who was busy munching at her pasty then at his aunt. He looked pleadingly at Marlene.
Marlene's eyes twinkled," Go on then, I'll take care of the kids. And don't worry, you won't be in trouble with your mum."
Aaron grinned at him before hurrying to the floo and calling," You're the best Aunt Marls! Bye Thora!"
His last glimpse was of his sister looking at him cutely. Her chin trembled as she said," Aar?"
Hastily Aaron disappeared, leaving his aunt to deal with his baby sister.
When he got to the Weasleys he saw Ginny sitting sulkily in the kitchen while Mrs Weasley cooked something delicious.
Aaron greeted them cheerfully," Hi Mrs Weasley, Hi Ginny."
Molly smiled at him," Hello Aaron dear, the boys are outside," she added and Aaron left the kitchen eagerly.
Ginny got up to go as well but Molly stopped her," No, you saw what happened with Luna, I'm not having the same thing happen to you."
"But Luna didn't know how to fly, mum! I know because-"began Ginny but stopped when Molly faced her with her hands on her hips.
"Because what, Ginevra?" she said sternly.
Ginny scowled at the pan, muttered something about having stuff to do and disappearing up the stairs.
"Hello mate!" greeted Ron as the dark haired boy appeared.
Harry and Nathan grinned at him while Jacob waved from where he was flying above. Aaron waved back before flopping himself on the ground," Hectic it is, babysitting sisters," he groaned.
Ron looked at him sympathetically," I'm glad mum's home to look after Ginny. She's in a mood because mum's not letting her fly."
"Well, I don't have any small sisters to look after," said Harry smugly.
Aaron raised an eyebrow," Uh huh, you forgot about Amy, Mara, and Aletris. Merlin, that's more sisters than I have. Not to mention Flynn too."
Harry made a face," They're cousins, and loads younger than I am."
Ron suddenly got to his feet," Who's up for a game of Quidditch? Aaron, you can be chaser with Harry. I'll be keeper."
The boys joined Nathan and Jacob, though the two young ones were merely on their brooms and not playing. When they had played for two hours without stopping, Molly called them in for tea. They landed, panting and sweating.
"I wish Hogwarts'd let us bring our brooms next year!" said Ron longingly.
"Yeah, reckon we'd do well together. Ron keeper, me seeker and Aaron chaser," said Harry with a nod.
"So you all know what house you'll be in, eh?" said Aaron as they took a sip of hot chocolate.
"Course! Gryffindor," said Ron with a mouth full of cake.
"Don't you want to be in Gryffindor?" asked Harry curiously," I mean, it's the best house."
"Don't tell me you want slimy Slytherin," said Ron with a disgusted look.
"'Course not, but dad was in Ravenclaw and I think might be there," said Aaron with a shrug.
"But Aunt Rena was a Gryffindor," pointed out Harry.
Aaron's eyes got a sly look and he said," Slytherin's not all bad. After all, Uncle Di and Uncle Rian went there."
Ron choked and looked at him in horror," They're the only two who've ever survived that mad house!"
Aaron laughed," How would you react if we had family in Slytherin?"
Harry looked thoughtful," No idea, mostly because no one I know will ever be a Slytherin."
Ron looked as though he couldn't picture that ever happening.
Monday, 14th October 1990
The Slytherins were packing up after Potions that day when Snape called out," Miss Cade, a word."
Reyna exchanged alarmed looks with Rylan and he muttered as he left, in Kiswahili," I'll wait outside."
Reyna shook her head," It might take time, I'll tell you later."
Looking doubtful and a bit worried, her brother left, along with her friends, who were shooting her curious looks. Reyna ignored Annalise Vaisey's smug look as she walked towards her Head of House's desk.
"Yes, Professor Snape?" she said politely.
Severus Snape finished his arrangement of parchments and looked at the girl in front of him. He seemed surprised as he looked into her eyes before a weird look crossed his face. Reyna felt alarmed. What had he seen?
He recovered quickly and spoke in his crisp tone," Cade, it has come to my attention that you spend rather a lot of time in the Gryffindor common room."
Reyna stared at him and Snape looked at her impatiently.
"Well? What have you got to say?" he snapped.
Reyna's dark eyes grew sharper as she said," Nothing, sir, because I do spend time there. I didn't think it was against the rules to go to another's common room?"
Snape raised an eyebrow," If you had read the rules carefully, Miss Cade, you'd note that in rule thirty seven it stresses that students are not allowed to go to common rooms that are not theirs."
Reyna crossed her arms, much to Snape's amusement and annoyance," Yes, and it adds that only if one intends to make trouble for that particular common room. As it is, sir, I go there simply to be with my brother."
Snape rolled his eyes, drawling," Yes, wonderful attachment, however Mr Flint-"
"So that's where you got it from," muttered Reyna.
"I do not take well to being interrupted, Miss Cade," hissed Snape, flashing his eyes at her before continuing," has told me that you spend more time there than you do in your own common room-"
"That's not true!" protested Reyna," I spend an hour there maximum and who is Flint to keep watch on the hours I spend at school?"
"Do not force me to deduct points from Slytherin," said Snape, glaring at her.
As though you would, thought Reyna sourly.
Snape was looking at her with a scowl as he said," It is not my intention to ban you from seeing your brother, or spending time in Gryffindor, much as it displeases me," his lips thinned in distaste at the House's name," I am merely stating that you do not forget your own house in favour of your brother's house. You have been sorted into Slytherin, and it is your duty to show that you are a Slytherin. Is that clear, Miss Cade?"
Reyna nodded shortly.
Snape scrutinized her before saying," Where do you come from, Miss Cade?"
Reyna looked at him in surprise," What do you mean, sir?"
"You do not look nor do you sound, British, yet your accent says otherwise. You say that you are a half-blood, yet I have never heard of the name Cade before. Is your father a muggle?" said Snape, looking at her closely.
Reyna hesitated before responding," No, my father is not a muggle, and I come from Africa sir, though I was born in Britain."
Snape nodded," Did you practice magic before you started Hogwarts?"
Reyna was starting to feel uneasy with all the interrogations," No offence sir, but why all the questions?"
Snape smiled thinly," Good, I was starting to believe you had no ounce of caution in you. As to the questions, well, I got a complaint from one of the students that in every class you attempted you were exceedingly good. Furthermore, you manage to succeed in every charm, spell, potion and transfiguration spell you try at the first time."
Reyna made up her mind to have a word or two with Vaisey as she said," Is there a problem with me doing well in classes?"
Snape favored her with a look," it would do you well to guard that tongue of yours, Miss Cade. However, I have been told that you were cheating during classes."
Reyna choked," Excuse me? Cheating? The reason magic comes easily to me is because I was taught that the trick is to realize one's potential. Magic is inside of us, and in order for us to respond well to it we need to want it to happen. And in case it hasn't been noticed, it takes me more than a few tries to get a spell right."
Snape tapped his fingers on the desk as he said," Who taught you that?"
Reyna squirmed," My mother."
Again, the same weird look crossed Snape's face before he said," Very well then. You may go."
Reyna didn't move," Sir, did you actually believe I was cheating?" there was an under layer of hurt as she asked that.
Snape merely waved at the door as he said," No, I wanted to raise the suspicions of a student and to get the full answer from you."
A small feeling of anger was starting in Reyna's chest as she glared at her professor. Snape looked up at her and snapped," Well, Miss Cade? You may return to your common room."
Reyna bit her lip from saying anything before turning and walking out the door, taking her bag with her. She didn't see the look Severus Snape gave her as she closed the door.
Reyna stormed up to Annalise in the common room, and, not caring that others were listening, said, in a rather hostile tone," I'd like a word, Vaisey."
Annalise looked at her smugly before motioning to her friends that they could leave without her. She led the way to her dormitory before sitting primly and saying," Yes, Cade?"
Reyna glared at her," What right do you have to go to Snape and tell him that I cheat in class? Furthermore, what proof do you have that says you see me cheating class? Just because I finish my assignments an hour before you do gives you no right to make false accusations of me," she snapped at her.
Annalise seemed to be enjoying the anger in her as she said," Well, I'm not the only one who's noticed that you finish everything earlier than others. A bit odd, isn't it?"
Reyna forced herself to be calm as she said shortly," Odd to you. I want a reason as to why you did that."
Vaisey shrugged," I don't like you, Cade, I don't like your brother either. The two of you seem think you can do anything you want anytime you want. You offer help to others just so they can be in debt to you. They may not see through your little game but I do, and you mark my words, I'll show them your true colours someday."
Reyna was left gaping at her as Annalise got up to leave the room. Reyna caught her arm and said," All your unfriendliness because you don't like me? What have I done to stir this-this feeling of hatred? And what do you mean, debts? For merlin's sake it hasn't even crossed my mind that someone even owes me a debt!"
Vaisey pulled her arm out of Reyna's hand and said scornfully," Please! It's all about owing one another debts in Slytherin. This talk about changing House Slytherin for the better! Rubbish if you ask me!
"It's a good thing no one did ask you then, Vaisey," said Delilah, appearing in the doorway and looking at Vaisey with dislike. She turned to Reyna, who was silent and said," C'mon, your brother's worried about you."
Reyna nodded and moved past Vaisey, ignoring her glaring gaze and scornful face. Delilah said nothing but as soon as they were out of the common room she asked," What were you arguing about?"
Reyna shrugged, seeming to have recovered herself as she said," She just told Snape that I was cheating in class and I caught up with her in the common room."
Delilah huffed," Of all the nerve! As though we wouldn't notice if you'd been cheating," she scowled," Jealous idiot if you ask me. Think she's got power just because her father's friends with the Malfoys."
Reyna looked up sharply," Lord Vaisey knows Lord Malfoy?"
Delilah nodded," Apparently he's quite high up in the Wizengamot and has a lot of influence."
Reyna hummed," That clears things up a bit," she said quietly.
Delilah looked at her funnily but didn't say anything.
"That makes two people who are after you, Flint and Vaisey," said Rylan, looking at his sister, who was looking unruffled as she made imaginary patterns on the board.
Reyna made a sound of agreement as she said," I reckon Flint complained about me in the first week though, and Snape's simply waited for a chance to speak to me. Flint and I solved our differences and we've been good so far."
"Reyna, part of the reason Snape's been noticing you is because you spend time in the Gryffindor common room. I honestly don't think there's ever been a Slytherin who spends time with Gryffindors so much," said Rylan thoughtfully.
"Please, mum said in her time there were loads of students who went to each other's common room," said Reyna with a shrug.
"It was different then. Now it's darker and more people are going to Voldemort," said Rylan.
He sighed," And what is wrong with Vaisey?"
Reyna couldn't help giggling at her brother's tone and he gave her a look," It's not funny Queen. She might even discover our secret."
It was just as well that they had cast a silencing charm because Reyna glared at her brother. He waved her away but lowered his voice," Mum'd have a fit if she knew someone was onto us. We need to be careful from now on. I'm not risking it."
"Well, atleast we'll be ready for Malfoy next year," said Reyna helpfully. Her eyes sparkled as she said," I, for one, am hoping for a bit of drama when our baby cousin starts Hogwarts."
Rylan grinned," With the way things are going, drama's way up our lane, though I reckon Harry'll spice things up."
"Who else will come that we know of?" asked Reyna.
"Ron, Hermione, Aaron, Neville, Draco of course, I think that's pretty much it," said Rylan.
"Aaron, he's the one I'm worried about most," said Reyna.
"We know how to reduce our auras, and he won't notice anything different. He'll be too busy enjoying Hogwarts," said Rylan wisely.
"Let's hope you're right," muttered Reyna.
