Later that night Dean roused to someone shaking his shoulder. He grabbed for the gun under his pillow before recognizing Sophie's big blue eyes staring into his as she crouched by his bedside.
"What are you doing up?" He mumbled, rubbing his eyes, "Are you hurt?"
She looked away, sheepish, then glanced back at her empty bed. She had a bath towel bundled up in her arms.
"I had a bad dream," she said, still looking anywhere but his face.
"So?" Dean snapped, feeling immediately guilty. This was Sophie. He didn't talk like that to Sophie - the most affectionate, intelligent and unswervingly loyal human he'd ever met.
"I'll just go back to bed," Sophie backpedaled, but Dean caught her arm before she could move.
"Sorry," Dean said softly, "Wrong reaction. What can I do?"
"I can't get back to sleep," Sophie said, her gaze fixed on the ceiling.
Dean waited for her to continue, to ask for something. He suppressed the instinct to offer her sleeping meds and shove her back in bed. She didn't move to get out of his grasp, just held the bundled-up towel to her chest with her free hand and stared at the faded ceiling tiles.
"Here," Dean let go of her and moved toward the center of his bed, "Sleep with me. It'll help."
And without a word, Sophie did. Dean pulled her up against his chest and tucked her head under his chin. Within minutes they were both fast asleep.
The next thing knew Sam was jabbing his ribs to wake him up.
"What the hell is this?" Sam hissed, gesturing at Sophie curled up against Dean's side.
"She had a bad dream," Dean whispered by way of explanation.
"And so you two slept together?" His brother said in disbelief.
"Not like that," Dean insisted quietly, "We literally slept together. As in she climbed in bed and we both went comatose until you decided to wake me up. Problem?"
"No problem," Sam said nonchalantly, "It's just…first goodbye kisses, now this. We're all clear that you two are becoming an item right?"
"We're not becoming an item," Dean insisted, "Whatever that means."
"You definitely are," Sam replied, "Just wait and see."
