"Good morning darling! Time to get ready for work." He kissed all over her face. He felt her squirming a bit. "I know you are waking up. Are you going to work today?" He asked smiling seeing her face burying up against his neck. He felt her nod that she was going to work. "How are you feeling?" He really wanted her to answer him verbally but he understood she was still tired. "Sore all over." She whispers without opening her eyes. "Makes sense. Anything I can do to help?" He asked not sure how she would do today. "Not really just need some Advil and maybe a bath. But only if you join me." She kissed his neck. "Then that's what we will do. How about I get you some water and Advil while you wake up more. Be right back." He heard out their room to grab some water from the kitchen and the medicine. He knew she was weird about water from the bathroom. When he returned he saw her sitting up trying to stretch her shoulder but more wincing in pain than anything.
"Hey here try this and then let's get in the tub before we try stretching again. The warm water will help relax your muscles. You ready?" He helped her up seeing her knee swollen. "Lean on me if you to." He saw her nod. Sleeping definitely made her body stiffen up over night. He sat her on the counter top while he started the water. Once he was happy with the water temp he returned his attention to Kim. He started to look at each one of her bruises. Her body was practically covered in them. Though he wasn't surprised with how she landed. And it made even more sense why she was so sore this morning. He helped her down and striped her clothes before helping her in the tub. Her back was pressed against his chest. His arms lightly wrapped around her trying not to put too much pressure on her body.
"Just try to relax a bit." He felt her body relax some but it wasn't much. "I know you are holding on to a lot of what happened yesterday. But try to remember that you are safe. And that you are okay. That the kids are okay. We are okay. The team is okay. And Michael is on the mend. Just release the feelings." He felt her body relax more. Almost like she heard him and was doing as he asked. She never spoke just laid on his with her eyes closed, but she was awake. By the time the water turned cool he noticed Kim was more alert. Her skin had more color and she seemed like she moved past it. "You know Will asked me yesterday if I could be pregnant. I had fear for a moment. I know my birth control stops ovulating but it still scared for a bit. I think even if I decide I want another one I think I'm still going to struggle with the fear it will change everything between us. Fear the past will repeat itself." She never looked up but she had heard him gasp a bit.
"I assume it was negative since you didn't mention it before hand?" He lifted her head so he could look into her eyes. "It was negative. I'm not sure I want another, we have talked about that. But I think for a minute I was excited too." She watched his eyes light up. "I would love that at some point but I understand your fear and that's okay. Your life, your children's life since you found out about them has been hell. Fear makes sense. I just hope that by the time we get to that point, if we get to that point, I will have proven I'm not going anywhere and that I will never change how I feel about you." He kissed her softly. It might not have been the easiest conversation to have but he was happy to be having it. He knew it was hard for her to admit to these things so he was proud of her.
The couple dressed and got ready for the day before heading to the kids room. Both kids still sound asleep. It seemed last night with the team wore them out for sure. "Good morning my babies! It's time to wake up." Kim rubbed the kids backs with Adam staying close by knowing she needed to take it easy. Milo woke first rubbing his eyes as he smiled seeing Kim. "Hi my sweet boy! Are you ready to get up and go potty?" She watched him nod and slowly to get up walking towards her. She hugged him before Adam picked him up hugging him as well. He placed down Milo down and they headed to the bathroom. Kim smiled watching them leave. Kim returned her attention back to Mia. "Sweetheart. I need you to wake up hunny." Kim rubbed her back a little harder getting her to wake up.
"Hey girly! Are you ready to go potty now that you are awake?" Kim asked hugging her daughter. "Yeah." Mia wanted down so Kim picked her up gently placing her down as she ran to the bathroom seeing Adam there. "Adam!" She ran into his awaiting arms. He picked her up hugging her, kissing her cheek before placing her down so she could potty. He helps Milo wash his hands and then sent him back to his room. Kim was picking out their clothes for the day while she waited. Milo returned ready to get dressed for the day, though he didn't want to outfit Kim picked. She allowed him to pick his own as Mia returned fresh and clean. Adam was right behind her. He helped get both kids dressed for the day. He helped them down the stairs to play while he and Kim worked to make breakfast and lunches for them all.
After the family ate their breakfast the kids were brought out to the car. Once secure Adam drove them to their daycare while Kim just listened to them talking away about everything and anything. It was one of her favorite things. After the kids were dropped off the couple headed to work. Adam had no idea how she was going to handle all the stairs with her knee but he knew she would try either way. "Before we enter. Just remember I'm so damn proud of you! But if you need help on the stairs I will carry you. Doesn't make you any less the badass." He saw her smiling wide. "Thank you! I do appreciate that. But I do want to try my best since all eyes will be on us as we walk in." He watched her pause and fidget for a moment. "Can I get a kiss before we enter though? Help my nerves a bit?" She asks almost shyly. He loved how timid she was about certain things considering she talked about sex all day long at work. "You never have to ask. I love kissing you and I love you." He leaned in to kiss her. It was soft, sweet, but full of love.
"Thank you I feel much better now." She smiled as she took his hand leading him inside. On the stairs he was right behind her with his hand on her back guiding her but also offering support. They were both caught off guard when they entered the lobby to see it full of patrol officers clapping for her and wanting to shake her hand. Even the Commander was there offering a hand shake and a job well done. She didn't feel she deserved it really but she endured it. She made her way to the next set of stairs knowing she couldn't ask for help either all eyes on her but she was emotional and sore already. Adam watched till they were out of view from the lobby before scooping her up and carrying her the rest of the way. He could see she was struggling a bit with all the stairs. As they entered the bullpen the team laughed seeing Kim being carried. "What can I say my knee hurts from all those stairs! I'm used to an elevator when injured." She smirked as he placed her down.
"How are you feeling today?" Kevin asked. They might not be partners right now but he loved her like a sister. "Sore all over. The bath this morning helped a lot but my knee and shoulder still hurt. My knee was doing better till I had to walk up all those stairs. But I will live." She moved to hug him for being so kind to her. Adam returned to the scene with a fresh cup of tea and an ice pack. He propped her leg up so he could ice the knee. When Jay and Erin entered the tears flowed for Erin. It had been an emotional night once they had gotten home and she was so grateful to Kim for saving all their lives. But she still wasn't sure she deserved it. Yeah she heard a noise but Jay knew what it was. Kim just held Erin tight till the tears subsided again. They all knew it was the hormones but no one said it out loud. They all just did their best to work around it.
"Alright good to see everyone is doing okay enough today. The case has been handed off to the Feds. No way we can work this after what happened. And while normally I would argue against that I'm not in this case. I have three injured already and I don't need more. So with that said write up your statements and file all your paperwork. We may get another case but till then just do your paperwork and rest up." Voight clearly saw the ice pack on Kim's knee and they were three down so it made sense. Everyone looked relieved as they worked to clear the paperwork from their desks.
It was an hour or so later they all noticed Kim getting up from her desk. Several people stopping in case she fell but she was okay. She walked towards the interview rooms but came back a short time later. All eyes on her just in case. "No need to worry. Just needed to move it a bit. It was stupid stiff this morning." She shrugged sitting at her desk again. As paperwork was completed the team grew bored with little to do. So they ordered lunch for everyone to sit in the break room and eat together. As the food was consumed the team talked about craziest cases they worked. Not horrific cases, craziest. "I got one. My first year on the job. My partner was this old, heavy set white man who believed women shouldn't be cops. It was lovely. Anyway we got sent to a wellness check on a woman that hadn't been to work in three days with no call. We get there and we exit the car and I'm already gagging on the smell. Not just decomp, but also pee, poop, mold, mildew, rotten food. It obviously got stronger as we got closer. My partner telling me it wasn't that bad but it was worse than bad. We get to the door and it was unlocked but because it was hoarded he couldn't enter with me. I had to climb over all the trash to try and find this lady. By the time I found her dead in the hallway she was being eaten by her cats! I freaked out and left before calling it in." She watched as they all looked horrified but laughed that this was a case that made her sick when they hadn't seen it before. Even in a field of dead, rotting bodies she never flinched.
"That's nasty! And you still love cats?" Adam asked knowing she owned them before. "Hell ya! I loved my boo. Made sure he always had food though. He wasn't making me his lunch!" Kim joked knowing even though it was a sick thought it was funny. "Time to embarrass Ruz! It wasn't a case since he never worked patrol. But remember your date with Platt!" Al started his story as the entire team gasped including Voight. Adam rolled his eyes but laughed. "Yeah, yeah! Ha ha!" He tried to play it off. "Oh the best part was you thought she was gay!" Now everyone was cracking up at him. "Well in my defense she asked me to go to dinner with her dad so she could keep getting her inheritance from him. How was I supposed to know. It seemed strange you have to admit." It didn't stop the laughter at all. Tears streaming down Kim's face thinking about it. "I could have lived without that being shared but it's fine." Adam just shook his head smiling. "It's too funny not to be shared. And be thankful I waited this long to drop that ditty on everyone." Al laughed harder at Adam knowing he was less than thrilled. "It's all good. At least she's married now so we don't ever have to play that game again." He paused for a moment. "You know when I asked her about being gay. First she was pissed then told me she did over half the guys in her class at the academy. That still haunts me." He shuddered thinking about it. But they all looked sick.
"Well anyone else want to try and top that little piece of information?" He laughed knowing he probably ended their conversation and quick. "I think we could all have done without hearing that!" Antonio had known Platt forever even saving her life once so this was all too much for him. Adam just laughed cleaning up after himself and Kim. They all heard the gate opening and Platt walking towards them. It took everything they had to keep calm faces. "Burgess this came for you." Platt dropped then left. Kim picked up looking confused as to why she was getting mail at the district. She was even more confused when she realized it was from Rikers. "What is it?" Adam asked seeing her face. "Um apparently a letter from Rikers Island." She held unsure if she should open it. "Wait isn't that where Paul is?" Adam asked concerned. "Yeah. But it could be from the warden or the psychiatrist. I think I need to open it just in case." They all waited on bated breath except for Torres who had no clue what was happening. She only read like two lines before she dropped it and pulled out her phone. Adam grabbed the letter right away reading it for himself.
"Hey Rafa!" Kim smiled as she put the phone on speaker. "Oh lord what happened now?" He groaned. "Well I got a lovely letter today sent to the district which I think is a violation of the restraining order. He asking for my help getting him transferred to a better prison." Kim laughed knowing this was stupid as shit. "Yeah like you would help him." He laughed. "Yeah so I'm thinking we get him transferred to Brownsville?" Kim smirked. "Kim! That's for juvenile delinquents. He can't go there!" He all but yelled. "Yeah but since they are used to dealing with children he should fit right in! Seriously!" The team was chuckling at this point. "Yeah I hear ya. But he's not getting any help on this issue. Rikers should be a seen as a gift. But I will handle it like always. Take care!" He hung up and Kim just looked amused. "What an ass clown! Like why would he think you would help him?" Kevin asked. "Lord knows. Maybe he thinks I still have some loyalty to him. I mean I didn't shoot him while he tried to rape me. So maybe he thinks I would care." Kim shrugged but honestly didn't care.
"Well clearly you don't if you were suggesting sending him to a detention center for acting like a child. That was too funny by the way!" Voight laughed getting up and exiting the room hearing his phone ringing. The team filed out waiting to hear if it was a case or not. Adam held Kim back wanting to talk and check in. "We are alone now. How are you holding up really?" He asked holding her hands while looking directly into her eyes. "Um okay I guess. I feel no sympathy for him. None. He's there because of his own actions. Nothing that I did. Except standing up for myself and my babies. I may have taken pity on him if I had gotten an apology. Or if I hadn't been blamed for everything all this time. So I refuse to take the blame again. This is part of the healing process. This is part of moving forward, moving on. Something I learned from you and in therapy. And I can't wait to continue this process with you." She smiled looking up at him. "I'm so proud of you! You are so strong!" Adam hugged her tight. But he heard her sigh.
"What? Did I say something wrong?" He was absolutely confused. "I guess I just can't wait for the day I'm no longer called strong. I just want to be able to live again in a normal mode. Whatever that means. No flight, no fight, no just surviving. I want to thrive." She shook her head knowing it sounded dumb. "Hey. Look at me. I completely understand what you are saying. But I don't honestly think you will ever stop being strong. Because you are, you always have been. You have always had to be. Maybe because that's just who you are meant to be. But you will be thriving soon. I know. Now looks like we have a case so let's work then we can talk more later." He kissed her softly before leaving the break room together.
"Alright dead gang banger! Everyone except Lindsey suit up. Halstead, Burgess you two will only process the scene. No chasing suspects, no engaging with suspects. We can't have you two down longer than we currently are. Also neither of you are driving! So find a driver!" Voight stated as they all headed to roll out. Adam stayed behind Kim was they moved just in case. Stairs were hard right now. "You gonna be my driver?" Kim sassed as they got to the cars. "Get in! Torres come on!" Adam called out seeing Jay was already with Antonio. They had been friends before Intelligence so it made sense. They rode in silence but it was slightly awkward with Torres and what happened at lunch. "So um I feel like that was a lot earlier." Torres stated calmly. "Honestly it's not really considering my history. So it's okay." Kim smiled reaching over to squeeze Adam's hand. "So you two are together, right?" He asked quietly. "Yeah we are. It's been a lot of talking to get here but yeah it's good." He looked over to her and winked. "Gotcha!" Torres returned to looking out the windows but they were at the scene.
They exited the car hearing lots of chatter as they got towards the house. All the neighbors outside trying to figure out what's going on. It was har enough without the crowd but these people made it worse. As they entered the house they broke off searching all the rooms looking for evidence of what happened and why. "Boss! Lots of empty cold pill packages!" Adam called out. Kim moved closer to his room. "How the hell did they get all of those. That stuff is locked up in the stores. And you are not buying that much of these. They won't be able to steal them easily. I wonder if they robbed a supply truck or a warehouse?" Kim mused as they looked at all the packages. "Have Lindsey look into it." Voight stated as Kim texted Erin. Kim went back to searching seeing weird things all over the place. Once all the evidence was bagged Kim stared at it all trying to make sense of it.
"Does anyone know what is used to make Acid? None of this makes sense for meth or coke." Kim mused as she looked around. "Um that's pretty old school but I think you are on the right path." Al looked very the evidence. "I mean yeah but it's not PCP and it's not quaaludes. But I think they are trying to make something old school to not have to deal with the competition." Kim shocked Al and Voight with her knowledge of old school drugs. "You aren't old enough to know quaaludes." Voight laughed. "Well unfortunately some creep ass old man in New York had a vintage batch of those lovely drugs that he referred to as thigh openers. Sick mother fucker!" Kim shocked them with that. "That's really dangerous. That's almost 30 years expired. Insane!" Voight shook his head heading out to see what everyone else was finding.
The team started to head back to the district. Kim was tired but she was determined to finish this case. When they hit the district Adam picked her up throwing her on his hip and carried her to the bullpen. He wanted her to rest a bit. She giggled as he carried her as did the team. He placed her on her desk and helped her to her seat before getting an ice pack for the knee. They listened as Jay informed the team what was found out from the neighbors about the deceased. It was a drug house for sure but the neighbors did confirm strange smells coming from the house which made it seem like it was a cook house or had been. And going old school would give them an edge. "Guys looks like a local pharmacy had 100 boxes of cold pills stolen. They couldn't prove it but they thought it was an inside job. They gave me the contact information for the person they suspected. Also they fired this guy." Erin explained putting up a picture of the suspect with his last known address.
"Alright Dawson take Torres and Interview this guy. The rest of you keep figure out who these people were." Voight headed back to his office. As the team worked Kim got up several times to walk a bit. Adam was watching her intently. "I'm good. Just needed to walk a bit." She smiled weakly. "Glad to hear that! Hopefully we will get released soon for the night. I think we could all use a break from this case." He sighed exhausted from getting nowhere with this case. It wasn't much longer before Dawson and Torres returned with their suspect in cuffs. "He tried to run." Dawson shrugged moving him towards the interrogation room. Kim smiled loving that she didn't have run this time. Voight and Al did the interview which led to names and full details about the crimes. He even told them he witnessed the shooting which is why he ran. The local drug dealers were unhappy with someone trying to steal customers even if it was something new to the drug scene. So they shot and killed the cooks to send a message.
The team left to apprehend their main suspect. Leaving three behind as they headed out. Kim, Jay and Erin started filing all the necessary paperwork while they waited. It was boring but it needed to be completed so they stayed productive. Kim was surprised when Adam arrived at her desk again. "Sorry I was in the zone." She laughed. "All good, we got the guy. We are letting him stew in the cage overnight. So we are headed out. Ready to go home." He knew she was but he always double checked. "Yeah. It sucks the kids will be asleep already but I could use my own bed. Let's go!" She packed her things and then headed out for the night. "We need to eat. I will heat up some leftovers when we get home. Just rest." He watched her nod as they started the ride home. "Maybe another bath tonight?" She whispers. "Sounds like a dream." He loved relaxing with her in the tub. He loved feeling her naked body pressed against his.
He reached over to take her hand, holding it tight as he drove. She was quiet but he knew it from the whole day not anyone particular thing. As the arrived home he helped her out of the car and into the house. They thanked the sitter locking up after she left. They ate a quick meal of reheated pasta before heading up to check on the kids. Both kids getting a kiss on the forehead and I love you from both Kim and Adam before they headed to her room. He started the water before watching her sit down to remove her jeans. The bruise on her knee had gotten worse and it was swollen so a bath was a good idea. Once she was fully undressed he helped her in the tub. He got in behind her a few minutes later. His arms wrapped around her waist loosely. Her head was on his shoulder, her eyes closed, her breathing evening out. She was asleep. He was thrilled. She got out of her own head to sleep. He only woke her once the water turned cool. And even then he did his best not to wake her too much. He brought her to bed covering her with the sheets before getting her some more Advil to help her knee. She barely woke to take it but did before falling into his arms to sleep. He watched her for some time before he fell asleep too. His last thought before he slept was just how strong she was and how it was ingrained in who she was. He knew she hated it but he had no doubt it would never leave her. Just like he wouldn't.
