The circles are probably older than human habitation in Galar, and are perhaps the most notable link between Galarians today and those of the Mesolithic, whose art was dominated by depictions of the Stonjourner. Long the most notorious feature of the landscape, Stonjourner are the 'giants' mentioned in many Galar toponyms, for their slowly lived lives often saw them mistaken for large piles of rocks.
Except during the Giant's Walk, a day so remarkable it once marked Galar's new year. The Stonjourner gather together atop the hill outside Turffield, moving from all over the region along its oldest roads (for wherever they step soon becomes a sort of natural pathway) to catch up with one another and share the most remarkable astronomical observations of the past year. Tourists and lords once gathered from all across and perhaps beyond Galar to watch their meetings; Stonjourner are absent from Kalos, but it is increasingly accepted in archaeology that they inspired the standing stones of Geosenge. The finest artisans of the age once carved geoglyphs to honor the Stonjourner, or perhaps to enhance their own prestige, or to send these pokemon messages from humanity; archaeologists continue to debate the question.
Stonjourner today seldom attract attention, and the custom of the circle is noted across the sport of pokemon battles mostly as an empty date on the League schedule. Stonjourner's size alone once rendered them a dominant species, and domestic Stonjourner are every bit as determined to join the circle as their wild counterparts. It was once assumed they had nothing to contribute, spending their time in pokeballs. Yet the arctic circle and southern constellations became known to Stonjourner astronomy through those in captivity, and in a legendary fight with Deoxys, one Stonjourner even saw space from outside this world.
