Chapter 74: 'I'm not going anywhere'

"There's nothing to be worried about babe. I'm right here. This procedure won't take long. They gave you some local so you'll just feel some pressure and a little bit of heat as Doctor Anderson removes the fibroids, ok?"

Eddie looked Jamie straight in the eye.

"Just how many of these have you done?"

Jamie gave her a confident look.

"A Hysteroscopy? Tons. I've lost count. You'll only need to rest for at least a day or two. Fairly simple. Besides, Doctor Anderson is nearly done."

Eddie felt ridiculous sitting in a wheelchair being wheeled out to the waiting room where the rest of the family was.

"I can walk bub. I don't need to be in this wheelchair."

Jamie stopped pushing the wheelchair and placed his hands on her shoulders.

"I know that babe, but its hospital policy in case something happens. We're still here."

Eddie rolled her eyes and shifted her weight as they entered the waiting room. She plastered a smile on her face for the rest of the family.

"There she is."

The smile still plastered on her face; she gave a small wave.

"Ok I'm here everybody. Everything went well, but now I think its time to blow this popsicle stand and get out of here. I just want to go home and sleep."

Henry stepped up to Eddie and kissed her forehead.

"You're a very brave woman Eddie. We're all proud of you. Get well."

The same sentiments were given to Eddie in forms of squeezing her hand. When they got to the house, they found Nicky watching the kids.

"Uncle Jamie, Aunt Eddie, welcome home. How'd it go?"

Jamie only nodded his head.

"Everything is good. Where are the kids?"

Nicky immediately changed subject.

"Well Patrick went down for the night around 8 after I read him a story. I gave him mashed peas. He loves them. Cora went down for the night half an hour later after I gave her some rice cereal and some apple juice. Well, I'll get out of your guys' hair. Let me know if you guys need some time for yourselves and I'll be right over to watch my favorite cousins."

Jamie folded Nicky into a side hug.

"Thanks so much for watching the kids. They really love hanging out with you. You don't know how much we appreciate all this. Well, it's getting late. See you on Sunday?"

Nicky nodded.

"Of course, Uncle Jamie. I'll see you guys at dinner. Have a good night."

Jamie looked Nicky in the eye.

"Be safe going home Nick. Text me when you get in the door to your apartment."

Nicky smiled.

"I will Uncle Jamie. But I am an adult now you know."

Jamie nodded but saw Nicky out the front door.

"I know you're an adult now, but I would do the same for your mom or your aunt. Just checking in on you."

Nicky gave a soft smile.

"I know you are Uncle Jamie. That's what I like about you. You always make sure we're safe. Either on the job or off."

Jamie shut the front door and turned back to Eddie who was gripping the banister of the staircase. He saw her look up the staircase with apprehension. He was right by her side.

"It's ok babe. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere. Let's just take the stairs slowly. Take your time. No worries about how long we take."

Eddie nodded and began to climb the stairs with Jamie's help. Once they got to the top of the stairs, she gripped Jamie's bicep.

"Oh hold on. I need to stop for a minute bub."

Jamie gave her a sympathetic and concerned look.

"You feeling nauseous again? I can get you some Compazine from my bag."

Eddie nodded as they made it to their bedroom. She just wanted to get into something comfortable and into bed to sleep. She was sleepy. Helping her sit down on the bed, he got her changed out of the clothes she had when she went into the hospital. Finding some comfortable sweatpants and a shirt to match it, he helped Eddie into them. Adjusting the head rest on the bed, Jamie helped Eddie get into bed and placed the covers over her. He handed her some Compazine, and she took it gratefully. Kissing her forehead, Jamie gave her a serious look.

"Don't chew that babe. Put it under your tongue and let it dissolve."

Eddie nodded and closed her eyes, letting herself relax. She listened to Jamie continued his conversation.

"Do you want something to help you sleep?"

Eddie cracked her eyes open.

"Just for tonight. Tomorrow, I want to just sleep without the help of any sleep aids. It's late. Want to cuddle?"

Jamie gave Eddie a smile, but shook his head no.

"Sounds tempting babe, but you're going to need to be lying on your back with the bed tipped up so your reclined. I'll give this low dose sleeping pill. It should help you get some rest. Have some water with that. Should only take a few minutes to kick in. Just close your eyes and try to relax."

Jamie watched Eddie for a few minutes, and when he heard her breathing even out, he felt a big weight leave his shoulders. Changing into something comfortable himself, he slipped into bed next to her and kissed her forehead once more.

"Goodnight, babe. I'm not going anywhere. We're in this together."

Turning the lamp off on his side table, he got comfortable under the blankets and draped an arm gently over Eddie's waist. Today was a success as far as he was concerned.
