Hey guys,

Well, in an attempt to make up for my pretty long hiatus, here's a little update.

Once again thanks for your comments and reviews! They sure help my motivation!

Happy reading!

Xoxo,

Nina

Saldivar was turned on by Kim's determination and Adam could tell.

As much as this situation was favorable for them, Ruzek wasn't all that comfortable with it,but he decided to express his thoughts with the looks that he shot James after any of his misleading comments on their way to meet Jones.

"Ben, you have to tell me how you managed to get a girl like this."

"He didn't do anything special." Kim started talking. "He was just himself." That's the backstory that she has created for them, which pretty much imitated real life. She had effortlessly fallen in love with Adam and she was falling for him all over again.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Saldivar kept talking as they walked down the warehouse, which was much bigger than what it seemed. The positive part of all this was that the team was getting outstanding visuals of the place thanks to the camera that Kim had embedded in her earrings.

"It means that what drew me to him was who he is. That's all I want and that's what makes us excellent partners."

She was trying to find a way to shut him up without sounding too dry or aggressive.

"Well my friend, I think the lady explained it better than I could ever try." Adam pitched in.

"I see. You've got something real going on here. That's hard to find." James said, surrendering his attempts to hit on Angie Anderson. Who would say that there was some wisdom lying in the man after all.

"James. Please stop that chatter. I can imagine you're boring our guests."

A different voice suddenly started to come to life.

"I'm sorry to disagree sir. I think my friends find this topic very interesting. Don't you?"

"Yes. Most definitely." Adam stepped in quickly.

"Friends? I thought you had met them only a few days ago."

The voice was getting closer and so were the footsteps that came with it. An indistinct figure started to appear through a dark threshold, and just by observing the silhouette, Kim was sure that the person before them was Aaron Jones.

"Well yes. But there's something different about them. They know the business like the back of their hands and something tells me we will be great business partners." The two men kept exchanging words while Kim and Adam just waited for the right moment to step into action.

"That is, if I decide that is something feasible."

"Of course Aaron. But you know I wouldn't bring something if I didn't think it could actually work."

"Yes. I know." He eyed the couple standing in front of them and held out a hand for Adam to shake. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Benjamin Anderson."

"The pleasure is all mine." Adam shook his hand firmly. "My wife and I have been looking forward to this moment. We're really interested in expanding our business."

"I have to be honest with you, that's probably what caught my attention the most about you two. You must be really ambitious. From what I've heard you're pretty new in this world."

"We are." Adam agreed.

"And you're already aiming at the big leagues." Jones commented with greed.

"Well, go big or go home, right?" Ruzek matched his energy. This was either going to piss off Jones or make him respect Adam even more. "Probably when you looked us up, because I assume that's what respectable businessmen like you do, the Phillipo House popped up."

He had to throw that out there. The Phillipo House was one of the heaviest and dirtiest criminal gangs in Chicago, impossible to bring down but that had a pretty good deal with Voight, and when they were setting up their aliases for this case, they made sure they attached a couple of string to them so their business would look more real and attractive for Aaron and his men.

Aaron just chuckled. "It did, and let me tell you I found that quite impressive."

"I told you Aaron." Saldivar said full of pride. "They won't disappoint."

"We'll see about that." Jones was eyeing Kim more than Adam enjoyed. He knew that was the idea, but he also knew what this man did to women and the idea of Kim going through any of that made his skin crawl. "But maybe we could get involved." Aaron finished his utterance and flashed a charming smile right before snapping his fingers. That action was cue for a man they had never seen before to appear carrying a blue backpack.

Both Adam and Kim thought that it was a smart move to carry his product in that bag. No one would be suspicious about a blue school bag. They just hoped the contents of that bag was what they were looking for. Especially Kim. She wanted this whole thing to be over.

Aaron placed the bag on a little stool standing to his side. "From what I've heard you're interested in the good stuff."

"We are." Adam answered confidently.

"It's gonna cost you." Jones replied.

"We know. We came prepared. Should I?" Adam asked, pointing to his own duffle bag. "If you would rather open it yourself, feel free."

"Sully. Open that." Jones ordered pointing at the duffel bag while he slid rubber gloves on his hands to open his own. "We'll do it at the same time. Just to keep this as transparent as possible."

As he started to move the zipper both Kim and Adam unconsciously tilted forward to check what was inside. They desperately needed to see the wrapping they were after, if that wasn't what was there then the whole operation had been a complete waste of time.

"This is the good stuff. The best in the market." Aaron reached his hand in the blue bag and pulled out a couple of plastic packets with the wrapping they were hoping to see.

"How good is it?" Adam asked again, keeping his cool. They both knew they needed to make the exchange before anyone from the unit could come in and take this man out in cuffs.

Jones chuckled at his question. "Real good. I'm not gonna lie, it's so good it's been getting us into trouble. If you know what I mean." The smug arrogance on the man's face was a bit repulsive, but they both knew exactly what he meant by that.

"You need to be careful if you're going to be dealing with it." The criminal offered a word of advice. He had already checked the money they had brought it and was more than willing to have them work with him. "I'm not going to get dragged into any shit if you make a wrong move."

"You don't have to worry about that. We know what we're doing." Now it was Kim who spoke.

"Something tells me you do." He took the duffel bag and handed the blue backpack to Adam. "Our contact will be James. Don't try to reach me directly. Do you understand?"

"Yes sir."

"Don't be silly. This is not the army. You can call me Aaron." He shook Adam's hand. "Be good Anderson, because I won't hesitate to bring you down if I have to. I'll even keep your wife." As he turned to leave, Adam could see Saldivar smiling and how everyone was slowly lowering their guards and that's when they heard it.

"Chicago P.D. Don't move!" It felt like a million voices yelling at the same time. Adam and Kim knew the unit had asked for back up but they didn't know exactly how many people were involved. Kim was itching to grab a gun and shoot Jones but part of her role right now was to play innocent, they couldn't blow their cover by any means, which meant they had to play along.

"Fuck! Where did they come from?" Jones cursed.

"Anderson, hold that bag and come right behind me. James, you know what to do."

Kim was looking at the situation startled, she didn't know what was about to happen, but when Saldivar reached for a controller with a red button on it, she got the clue.

"Ben!" Her instinct and professionalism kicked in. She had no clue how her desperation to make sure both her and Adam were ok, hadn't taken over allowing her to shout out his cover name and not his real one.

It only took one look at her face for him to realize that something was off. She looked over to Saldivar's hand for Adam to follow her sight and he saw exactly what was going on.

Their gazes met again, and their non verbal communication was too loud for either of them to ignore. They had to do something to warn their team, but they couldn't sell themselves out, but most of all they wanted to protect each other.

There wasn't much time left, Saldivar's thumb was about to press the trigger, the explosives were going to go off somewhere and their team could potentially lose everything.

Kim shut her eyes, she was the one standing closest to James, she needed to act quick. She was well aware that the unit was monitoring her and Adam's every move, so anything off the script was going to call their attention and hopefully make them reassess the situation.

After one deep breath, the brunette just went for it. She took a few steps towards Saldivar, using all her body weight to try to stumble into the man and deter him from pressing that damn button, but it was too late.

The loud, thudding noise was deafening. People shouting, things falling and breaking and an unbearable buzzing were slowly bringing her back to consciousness.

"Kim! Kim!" Her name echoed through her ears, but it felt like it was coming from far away.

Her lips parted softly trying to speak, but it was as if the words weren't coming out of her mouth.

"Kim!?"

A hand pressed on her forehead slightly moved her face trying to make eye contact with her and make sure she was ok.

"Adam." Her voice was raspy and almost inaudible.

"Shh. Don't push yourself Kim."

"Adam?" This time her voice was louder, but it took all her effort to be heard, feeling as if knives were scraping her throat.

"He'll be fine. You just rest, ok? The ambo will be here anytime now." Even though she nodded in agreement, Jay's words were not what Kim wanted to hear and although she was grateful to have her friend by her side, his hand was not the one she wanted to feel holding hers.

She was trying really hard to stay awake and follow what Jay was saying, but her mind was elsewhere and her eyes along with her face were trying to move around in an attempt to find Ruzek and understand what was happening.

"Hey, listen." His soft voice called her attention once more. "He's not here. They took him to Med, I will let you know if anything happens, but right now I need you to focus on you ok? Stay awake and try not to move too much until you get checked out."

She heard attentively and nodded softly.

"Ok. That's great. Everything will be fine Burgess."

It was sweet of him to try to reassure her, but it was impossible for her to keep calm. She was only going to relax after seeing Adam for herself.

It wasn't long until the paramedics arrived and checked Kim out before taking her into the ambulance and back to Med.

The doctors talked to Halstead and told him that the lacerations seemed superficial but they still needed to run some tests to make sure there wasn't any internal damage they weren't seeing right now.

Kim heard bits and pieces of the conversation, but she quickly began to doze off again
