CHAPTER 6
POVS ELIZABETH
Once I finish talking to Spencer, I try to understand what exactly happened to change his mind about doing the job with me and to change his attitude a little too.
I stop thinking about the topic and head towards the dining room, I sit at the only table that is now free. Not far from me are the girls, who seem to be becoming more united. I would love to be able to have a group of friends one day, although, after everything that happened, I have lost hope a little.
I was quietly catching up on a book while I ate, when I hear Aria invite Jenna to sit with them, I almost choke on my food with fright and, from what I see, the rest of the girls aren't very comfortable with the idea either. Aria has always been very empathetic, and she must have done it because she feels guilty.
Just at that moment a flashback comes to me of the night that tragedy happened in which Jenna lost her sight. It was the same day that Alison introduced me to the group.
It had only been two days since I had met Alison. She had helped me with the problem I had with my grandmother's heirloom, so when she asked me if she wanted to join her group of friends that night for a sleepover, I couldn't say no.
Alison already knew a lot about my problems, despite only having known her for a few hours, I don't know how, but something about her made you tell her each of your secrets, even those that you haven't told even those closest to you.
Once I arrived at the address she had sent me, I saw that she had been waiting for me outside so that I wouldn't go in alone. It seemed quite strange to me that she did it, because she didn't look like the type of girl who would do you many favors and if she did you favors, she would surely ask you for something in return.
''Hello Elizabeth, I'm glad you accepted my invitation. You'll see that you'll quickly fit into our group, they're all very nice, although always remember who introduced them to you,'' I say in a sly way.
''Okay… thank you very much for inviting me, Alison, and for everything from the other day,'' I said nervously, it had been a long time since I had interacted with girls my age. After spending five months in the hospital recovering from injuries from the accident, and several more months in bed, I was grateful for a little distraction from my problems.
Although who would have imagined that tonight would become the biggest of my problems and would be the beginning of the end for this group of girls.
''It's no big deal. Let's go inside, everyone is waiting for me to arrive,'' she says as she quickly drags me towards the front door. It seemed like a pretty nice and familiar house.
A tall and athletic girl opens the door for us, who seems quite happy to see Alison arrive, she seems smiling when she looks at her. ''Hello Alison, we were wondering why it took you so long to come,'' she says happily, but as soon as she sees me she becomes confused. ''And who is she? "I didn't know you were bringing someone else to our sleepover today."
''Yes, I wanted to give you a surprise, this is Elizabeth, she is new in town, and she will be the new member of our group. Come on, Elizabeth, let's introduce you to the others,'' Alison says as we walk up the stairs, leaving a somewhat distressed Emily behind. I hope it wasn't because I was going to join her group, although the truth is I was also quite confused. I thought it was just going to be a day to be nice to me for being new in town.
We enter the room where everyone else is, like Emily, at first, they are happy to see Alison, but then they see me and are a little confused.
''Girls, meet Elizabeth, from now on she will be one of our group, I hope you treat her well, but don't forget that I am your favorite,'' Alison says, winking, as if that were a joke, although in my opinion it sounded quite serious.
They are all a little reserved at first about me joining the group, but little by little they are welcoming me. The first to talk to me is a short brunette girl, who I now know is called Aria, she seems nice, and she hasn't been averse to the idea of me joining her group. Spencer is the one who takes a little longer to want to talk to me, but in the end, she ends up opening more to me and she tells me a little about what they had planned to do tonight.
Throughout the sleepover, Alison throws some slightly hurtful comments at some of the girls, especially towards Hanna, about her weight. She says it all with a smile on her face and then she apologizes as if she had just said something stupid.
Once the awkward moment after her comments passes, they all have a great time together again. The truth is that, if it weren't for some quarrels they have, I think they would be the perfect group of friends. Even Alison who really enjoys being around them. Sometimes, she gives Emily some smiling glances when she thinks no one is watching.
All this is interrupted after a scream from Alison. She says that she has seen how Toby photographed us, while we were trying on clothes, through the window. She runs out to the garden, and we all follow her.
"I'm going to give him what he deserves," she says angrily as she searches for something in her bag. From it he takes out a firecracker. She intends to throw him into the garden house, where Alison says Toby has hidden.
"We don't need to do that, let's tell the police," Hanna said, a little scared by what she wanted to do Alison. All the rest of us agreed with her, except Alison of course.
''Come on, girls, it's just going to be a scare, nothing is going to happen,'' she says with a mischievous smile.
In the end we ended up accepting a little reluctantly.
Everything ends up going badly and when Alison throws the firecracker inside the garden house, a big explosion occurs, and we discover that the person inside was not Toby, but it was Jenna. The girls quickly hide inside the house, but I directly run to my grandmother's house.
Everything reminded me of the night of the accident, I needed to get away from there as quickly as possible. I was feeling like I was there again; I didn't want to have a panic attack in the middle of the street.
A beautiful night turned into one of the worst nights of my life. Again.
The next day, I walk over to Alison's house and apologize for leaving quickly and not staying there with them. She seems to understand it, but she tells me that next time I would have to leave the group, in a somewhat joking way, but not a joke.
For the next two weeks I follow the group of girls to everything they do, well, more like Alison drags me along. She wants me to be one of the group, although everything is very tense after what happened to Jenna. We feel very guilty about what happened, but Alison acts like nothing happened.
The accident in which Jenna lost her sight was what really began to separate the group of friends, not just Alison's disappearance. Every time we went somewhere, there was guilt in the air.
The truth is that I still have nightmares about that day and I still don't know how to feel about Alison ending up blaming Toby for the accident, but I just know that I will never in my life be able to forget it. That day she could have lost much more than her sight. She's not a very kind person, but, in no way, did she deserve that.
A few hours later…
I just finished soccer training today, it helped me clear my head for a while, but now I'm a little nervous again, because Spencer will be at my house soon.
As soon as I get home, I get ready so that I'm not in gym clothes or sweaty by the time Spencer arrives.
Just as I sit on the couch, reading my favorite Supergirl comic, the tremor sounds.
'Spencer has arrived, so nervous,' I think.
''Hello,'' I greet him nervously.
"Hello, Elizabeth," Spencer says a little awkwardly. I think he still doesn't know how to treat me.
We go up to my room to do work, because I wouldn't want my grandmother to come and get angry because we are messing up the living room or kitchen. She won't even let me watch a movie in the living room quietly, so I tend to spend all my time in my room, this way I avoid her too, which is a relief.
''It's not a very big room, but I think we can manage. You sit at the desk, and I'll stay in bed, if that's okay,'' I say nervously when we enter my room. My room was one of the smallest in the house, but it was the one my grandmother chose for me and I'm not going to argue with her about it.
"Sure, don't worry, no problem," Spencer said, a little nervous too. I think neither of us know how to communicate right now. At least, for once, I'm not the only one.
Spencer stares around the room until he finds a photo of me with my mom and brother on my nightstand. ''Is she your mother and your brother? I've never seen them around Rosewood,'' she said in an attempt to relax the atmosphere. However, this would make the atmosphere much more tense.
I already knew that my grandmother hadn't really told anyone that her daughter and grandson had died. I had already given up on the idea, but I didn't believe that not even the Hastings family really knew who I was. Every time my grandmother surprised me more.
"Yes, they died two years ago in a car accident, when we were coming home from a New Year's Eve party we had gone to, that's why I live with my grandmother now." Once I say it, Spencer freezes.
''So... Sorry. I am very sorry for your loss. I didn't… know, I understood that you were the granddaughter of a friend of Mrs. Hale (Elizabeth's grandmother's last name), I didn't know that you were her granddaughter and that this had happened to you,'' says Spencer, who seems not to know where to go now. Not to blame, it's a pretty uncomfortable situation.
I couldn't expect less from my grandmother than to say that I was the granddaughter of a friend of hers. I don't understand how she can have so little appreciation for me.
''Don't worry, I knew my grandmother wasn't telling people who I am, although she would have told you, the Hastings, at least.'' As I say it, I look away, I don't want her to see how I feel right now.
After a somewhat awkward silence, ''Well, let's get started on work then before it gets too late. Tonight, I have dinner with my parents and my sister and her fiancé and the only thing I needed was to be late.' ' says Spencer, laughing, trying to lighten the mood. I appreciate it because I didn't know how to continue after that.
''Yes, of course,'' I say half laughing, ''I had thought that since the teacher said that we can do a project about the history of any province or country, we could talk about ancient Athens. I think it's a pretty interesting topic,' I tell her, although it makes me anxious that she might think it's a silly idea.
''Yes, perfect! The history of ancient Greece is one of my favorite parts of history. It has everything I could like. I didn't expect you to like it too. Usually people from class, well, people our age are only a little interested in the history of our country and the world wars and little else," says Spencer, surprised. It seems like this may be one of the things we have in common. Our passion for history.
''I have always liked history, especially everything related to Greece and Italy. My mother used to tell me a little about the history of these countries before going to bed and she was also very passionate about Greek mythology, so I became a fan of this topic since I was little,'' I say, surprising even myself about how comfortable I was talking to Spencer.
We spent another hour getting to work and talking about the history of Athens. It seemed like we might start getting along pretty well from now on. I don't know why, but now she doesn't get uncomfortable when I don't look her in the eyes or don't understand some of her sarcasm. If she sees that I don't understand what he told me, she explains it to me so I can understand it.
It all ends when we hear how someone has just arrived at the house.
''Perfect, my grandmother had to arrive early today,'' I think, cursing myself for having so much bad luck. Surely now she was going to be angry because I had invited someone to the house, especially without having told her, anyway she wouldn't have left me in any way.
'Elizabeth, I'm here!'' my grandmother says as she approaches my room, ''You've prepared dinner, right? You know I don't like that….'' She stops talking as soon as she sees that Spencer is in my room.
"Oh, hello, Spencer, I didn't know Elizabeth was bringing anyone home," she says, looking at me accusingly.
"Hello grandma, yes, we had to do some work and no, I haven't had time to make dinner," I say a little nervously, knowing what awaits me later.
She looks at me a little angry and says 'Well, we'll talk later, finish quickly.' After this she quickly slams the door out of the room. I know she hasn't said anything else because Spencer is there, but that means telling Spencer that we're done doing work for today.
Spencer looks at me a little worried. He must have noticed my grandmother's behavior towards me, most likely. "We already have almost everything ready, if you want, tomorrow we can continue what remains after school in the cafeteria," she tells me with a look of sympathy.
''Yes, perfect, tomorrow we finish everything. I'll walk you to the door,'' I say, somewhat relieved that she understood the situation. I didn't want Spencer to be mad at me again.
Spencer walks thoughtfully towards her house and I stay here knowing that now I would have one more argument with my grandmother.
I can't wait to go to university and never come back.
