Ch 70
70 chapters! Yay! Thank you all for being here and continuing to read my story after all these years! My one shot story has some new chapters too. Leave me some requests over there! This chapter isn't my favorite, but I'm just trying to move the story along and get through all this Underworld stuff. The next chapter will have a little more excitement! Hope you enjoy :)
Hanna went Granny's the next morning with her parents for breakfast. She was surprised when the witch set down their food in front of them. They only just sat down a few minutes ago.
Snow looked up at her confused. "We haven't ordered yet."
"One dry wheat toast, one oatmeal, and pancakes," the witch said. "I know the orders of all the regulars. I'll get your cocoa."
Hanna looked down at her pancakes and slowly pushed them away. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. She looked over at her mom, who also hadn't touched her food.
David took a bite of his toast and looked over at Snow and Hanna. "What?"
"David, we're regulars. We're regulars at the diner in Hell…on the way to Hell…" Snow sighed. "You know what I mean."
Hanna looked up at her dad. "We were only suppose to be here for a day."
David sighed. "You're thinking about Neal."
"Dad, it's been so long." Hanna wiped the tears from her eyes.
"If only we could talk to him," Snow said. "If he could just hear our voices."
"Oh. You can do that," the witch told them. "It's a simple level one haunting. Lots of people do it here until they lose interest. I know where a booth is."
"A booth for haunting?" David asked.
"Where?" Snow asked.
"Oh here and there…" the witch teased.
"Tell us!" Hanna slammed her hand on the counter. She wasn't in the mood for the witch's games.
Snow put her hand on her daughter's and looked to the witch. "What do you want?"
The witch pulled out a bottle and held it out to David. "Breathe into this."
David looked down at the bottle curiously.
"The breath of a living buys a lot on the black market down here," the witch told them.
David took the bottle, breathed into it, and handed it back to the witch. She told them where they could find the booth, and they quickly left the diner to talk to Neal.
When they got to the booth there was a long line, but they finally made it to the front and it was their turn to go next.
"How does this even work?" Snow asked. "I don't know how much time it gives us. Do we just talk or…oh, I think we should sing him a little song. He likes our singing."
"I don't think it really matters. I think it's just about Neal hearing our voices," David said.
"Yeah, but how does that work, anyway? Does it go directly into his ears? Does it repeat on a loop?"
David turned to the man standing behind him. "Excuse me. Do you know how this works? I mean, on the other side."
Hanna looked up him, hopeful for an answer.
"No idea," he told them. "I don't even know if the messages get through. I hope so, or I've wasted a lot of time these past 30 years."
Hanna slowly turned back around. That wasn't very encouraging.
"Okay, come on," David said once the booth opened up. He guided the Snow and Hanna inside.
"Okay," Snow took deep breath and reached out for the phone.
Hanna looked up and could see the tears in her mom's eyes. She could feel them starting to form in her own. They didn't know if Neal would hear what they were all about to say to him, but Hanna held onto hope that he would.
"Hi Neal, it's Mommy," Snow said. "Daddy and Hanna are here too." Snow held the phone down so they all could talk.
"Hi buddy. We miss you," David said.
"We're going to be home really soon," Hanna told him.
"Why don't you tell him a story," Snow suggested to Hanna. "You know he loves your stories."
Hanna nodded. She recently started making up little stories for him to help when he was upset or fighting sleep. She decided to tell him the one she made up about the sheep and the puppy. It was hard to tell, but she was pretty sure he liked that one best. Hanna felt a little silly talking into a phone instead of directly to her brother, especially when there was no answer back. She finished her story and waited while her mom and dad sang him a lullaby. Her parents finished their song and they hung up the phone, hoping that this would get through to Neal and give him comfort while they were away.
Once they got back to the loft, Hanna went upstairs to check on Henry. She knew he'd spent most of the night trying to write something that would help them.
"Hey…how's the writing coming?"
"It's not." Henry told her.
"Don't worry, Henry. I'm sure something will come to you."
"I doubt it. This is all I've written," Henry held up a page to her.
Hanna took the page from Henry and saw a drawing of her and her parents at the diner this morning. "Why did you write about this?"
"I don't know! I don't even remember doing it."
"Is there anything I can do to help?"
"No, just go."
"Henry…"
"Can you just leave me alone!"
"Hey, don't yell at me! I just came up here to check on you!"
Henry sighed. "I'm sorry. I just thought that once I got the pen, I'd actual write something that could help us."
"You will. Just give it some more time."
Henry turned back around without saying anything.
Hanna took that as her sign to leave. When she got back downstairs, she saw that Belle was there along with Robin who was holding his baby. "What…what are you doing here?"
"Hades brought me through a portal," Belle told her. "It's a long story."
"So you're not…"
"No I'm not dead."
"And the baby? She came with you? What about Neal? Is he…"
"She fell through the portal with me, and Neal is fine. He's safe at home with the fairies."
Hanna let out a sigh of relief. She was glad her brother was safe.
"My sister is here too," Regina added.
Hanna's eyes went wide. "That witch is here?"
Regina nodded. "She fell through the portal with them. And apparently she has a history with Hades."
Hanna sat down at the table with her parents trying to take in all of this new information. This whole trip was turning into a mess. They've been here way longer than they planned, there were now three more people in the Underworld who shouldn't be, and they weren't any closer to finding a way to defeat Hades and getting out of here.
A few minutes later, Henry came running down the stairs. "It happened. It happened again," Henry gave the pages he had in his hand to Hanna. "Take a look."
Hanna looked down at the paper. "Neal…Mom, Dad. Look," Hanna gave the pages to her parents.
"Why did you write this?" David asked.
Henry shrugged. "It's like before. I didn't or I just don't remember. It just wrote itself. Like it does."
Emma took the page from her mom and started to read. "The infant son of Snow White and Prince Charming looked up at the tiny glass unicorns as they stirred by the wind, but on this night he didn't hear the chime of the crystal. Instead, he heard the voice of his sister, Hanna, who told him a story, and the voices of his mother, Snow White and his father Prince Charming. They sung a lullaby until he fell asleep as soundly as if he were in their arms."
Hanna looked up at her parents. "He heard us."
David reached out to his grandson with tears in his eyes. "Thanks, Henry."
"I don't know about anybody else, but I am really ready to get back home to my family," Snow said. "My whole family. No more waiting. We can save ourselves. We're going to take down Hades, and we're going to do it now."
Emma had the idea to use her magic to burn the names off of the tombstones. Regina tried to tell her that a spell like that doesn't existed, but Emma insisted that it did. The spell came to her in a dream. It would be a lot shot, but they had to try. Hanna went with Emma, Killian, and her mom to the graveyard.
"The spell worked in my dream," Emma told them. "Now, I just need to make it happen." Emma closed her eyes and lifted her hand towards the tombstone.
Hanna wrapped her coat tighter around her as the wind started to pick up. So far the weather hadn't changed much since they've been here. She really hoped the Underworld didn't get thunderstorms. They did not have time for that.
"Emma wait." Killian reached out his hand to stop her. "Any captain worth his salt knows when a storm is brewing. And trust me, we need to find shelter."
Emma's eyes went wide. "Why did you just say that?"
"Oh, it's fine, love. It's just a storm. I've survived worse."
Hanna noticed the look on her sister's face. "Emma, what is it?"
"I should not have brought you here. My dream…it wasn't just a dream. This is exactly how it happened."
"Can we talk about that a little bit later?" Killian asked. "We need to take shelter now!"
They all looked up and saw a funnel cloud approaching. Killian was right, they needed to get somewhere safe.
"Okay, I know this seems a little creepy, but we should be safe down here," Emma said as they entered the Underworld's version of Regina's vault.
"Are you sure about that?" Hanna asked when she heard a creature roar in the distance.
Killian turned to Emma. "What the hell is that thing, and why is it chasing us?"
"I don't know," Snow said, "but if it comes close, I can get a shot at it."
"No, you cannot go back out there!" Emma told her mom.
"Emma, what are you so afraid of? We've faced monsters before."
"My dream…it's happening. And there's something I didn't tell you," Emma stopped and took a deep breath. "You died."
Before Snow could even react, they heard someone or something coming down the stairs. Killian grabbed a knife, Snow had an arrow ready in her bow, and Hanna held her hand out ready to try and stop whatever it was.
Regina gasped when she came around the corner to find Hook's knife pointed at her throat.
"Sorry, love."
"Well I'm glad your reflexes are better than your sense of style. Why are you all in my vault?"
"Short version…" Snow said. "Things with fangs is trying to kill us."
"And you're hiding instead of fighting?"
"I saw the same monster in my dream," Emma told her. "And in the end it…"
"It killed our mom," Hanna added.
"I thought it was a message or some sort of vision of the future," Emma said.
Regina shook her head. "Well, you dreamt it. It's not like it'll happen. Maybe this dream isn't just about the monster. It's about you working out some issues."
"I don't have any issues…"
Hanna raised her eyebrows at her sister. "Em, Regina's right."
Killian walked over to her. "What's going on, love?"
Emma sighed. "Maybe I…feel like I failed everyone."
"Failed? You saved me," he told her.
"But we're still trapped in the Underworld. What the hell was I thinking bringing everyone down here?" Emma looked to her sister. "Bringing you and Henry down here. This was a terrible plan. I should have done this alone. Now I'm always frightened. I'm frightened that someone will die, and it'll be my fault. And I'll never forgive myself."
"Emma. You didn't force any of us down here," Snow told her. "We told you before, we wanted to come with you. We knew things would be hard. They always are, but some things are worth it. Love is worth it. Now, if you want to get home, let's do what works. Let's face this monster together."
Hanna smiled and looked up at her sister. She could see a small smile on Emma's face too. "Mom's right."
"I know she is. Let's go."
They all made their way out of Regina'a vault. Snow found tracks for them to follow and they hunted down the monster.
"It's close," Snow told them. "Keep your eyes peeled."
Regina saw something running through the tree. "There!" Regina lifted her hands and sent magic flying towards it. The creature fell to the ground, and they all took off running towards it.
"Wait, everybody stay back." Emma held up her hands, ready to blast it with magic. "That thing could still be alive!"
"Emma, stop! Don't kill it!" Snow told her.
Hanna watched her mom drop her bow and arrows on the ground and slowly walk towards it. "Mom…"
"It's alright, Hanna." Snow turned to Emma. "I think you're right, your dream was a vision, but it wasn't about saving me. It was about finding her."
Hanna watched her mom pick a red cloak up from the ground. She looked back at the creature…it was a wolf. "Ruby…" She watched her mom drape the cloak over her, and the wolf transformed back into their friend.
Snow leaned down. "Red!" She gently shook her. "Red?" Snow tried again, but she wouldn't wake.
"Mom, is she okay?" Hanna asked.
"I don't know. We need to get her somewhere she can rest." Snow turned to her stepmother. "Regina?"
"On it." Regina wave her hand, taking them all back to the loft.
Once Red was finally awake, she told them that she didn't intend to come to the Underworld. She used a tracking spell to find Zelena. They informed Red that her tracking spell did its job because Zelena was here. Red told them that Zelena took her friend Dorothy's magic slippers so she could get back to her baby. Red doesn't know what Zelena did to her friend. Dorothy went to face her and just disappeared. Red felt like she failed her…another life she's ruined. They all assured her that wasn't true. They would help her find Dorothy and to do that, they needed to go talk to Zelena. Snow asked David to go to the phone booth to talk to Neal again, while she, Hanna, Emma, Regina, and Red went to find Zelena.
They found the witch, and Regina was able to convinced Zelena to do the right thing and give back the slippers. However, she informed them that Dorothy was under a sleeping curse and needed true loves kiss. Red told them that Dorothy had an Aunt Em who passed away and maybe she was down here. They hoped she could breathe into a bottle, like David did with witch at Granny's, and that would wake Dorothy. Red could use the slippers to get back to Dorothy and use the breath of her aunt to wake her. They went to the graveyard to check her tombstone. The tombstone was still standing, which meant she was here somewhere.
"Snow!" David called out as he, Henry and Killian ran towards them. "We've been looking everywhere for you."
"What is it?" she asked. "Did you talk to Neal?"
"Hades ripped up the phone," Killian told them. "He's cut us off from Storybrooke."
Snow looked to her husband. "What? Why?"
"We can't talk to him anymore?" Hanna asked her dad in a panic.
"Neal's fine," David assured them.
"No. We don't know that," Snow said. "I mean maybe Hades did this for a reason. Maybe he's gonna make a move on Storybrooke now that we're trapped down here."
"This is exactly what he wants, for us to all lose hope," David told her.
"Well it's hard not to when our child's life might be in danger."
"Mom, I think it's time," Emma said.
"For what?"
"For you to go home…both of you."
Emma tried to convince her parents that they needed to go home and be with their baby. They had done more than enough for her, and Neal needed them more right now. Snow didn't want to leave. She wanted to complete the mission. They needed to defeat Hades. Emma assured them that they could do the rest without them and that it was okay for them to go. They could use the slippers. They could go to Oz with Red and click their way back to Storybrooke.
"You all are forgetting something," Regina said. "Hades carved Snow's name on a tombstone. Emma, you couldn't take it off. Even with the slippers, she can't leave."
"I can't." Snow looked to her husband. "But you can. Take Hanna and get home to our son."
"Take me?" Hanna shook her head. "I'm staying here."
"Hanna, you're going to go home with your father."
"I'm not going and you can't make me!"
"Hanna…"
"No Mom! I came here to help Emma and that's what I'm going to do."
"But I know how much you miss Neal and…"
"I do miss him, but I need to stay here. Please, let me do this." Hanna watched her mom look over at her dad. They were having one of their silent conversations.
"Alright, you can stay," Snow finally told her.
Hanna let out a sigh of relief. "Thanks, Mom."
Snow nodded. "Now, let's see if we can find Dorothy's aunt."
They were able to find her, but when they gave her the bottle to breathe into, something happened. Hades added water from the River of Souls, causing Aunt Em to turn into a puddle. She was gone and wouldn't be able to help Dorothy. Red decided she was going to get back to Oz and wake Dorothy herself.
Regina held out the slippers to Red. "Put these on, think of where you want to go, and click your heels three times. David you should take her hand and hold tight."
David nodded and turned to his wife. "So I guess this is goodbye."
Snow wrapped her arms around him.
David laughed and hugged her back. "We have done this before, we can do it again."
"When you get home, tell Neal that I will be there as fast as I can."
"Well, I was actually hoping that you could tell him that for me."
Snow shook her head. "David, you know I can't leave."
"Now you can."
"What?"
"I removed your name from the headstone," Killian told her.
"Am I missing something?" Regina asked. "Emma already tried that."
"Yeah and it didn't work," Emma added.
"Because you tried to erase the names." David took his wife's hand and led her to the tombstone. "The rule down here is simple, a life for a life. So I traded mine for yours."
Hanna followed her mom and dad. She looked at the tombstone and found her mom's name scratched off and her dad's written on the stone instead.
"David!"
"No, no," David turned his wife towards him. "If one of us gets to go home and see our son, it should be you."
Emma looked to Killian. "How did you know to do this?"
"Simple, love. Hades overlooked one thing during my escape…he enchanted my hand to carve these markers in the first place. I can't erase the names, but I can change them."
"Come on," David told Snow. "Our boy waits for you."
"But I…I was ready for you to go." Snow looked towards Hanna and Emma. She wasn't ready to leave her girls.
"No, it's better this way. You can look after him, and if Storybrooke's in trouble, there's no better leader than Snow White."
"You're sure?"
"Go to our son. Go home. I'll be back before you know it."
Emma walked over to her mom. "I'm not very good at goodbyes."
Snow pulled Emma into her arms. "I know. It runs in the family."
Hanna looked down as she felt the tears fall down her cheeks. She knew this goodbye was going to be hard no matter which parents was leaving. She didn't want either of her parents to go, but she knew her brother needed at least one of them.
Snow walked over to Hanna and gently lifted her chin. "Are you sure you don't want to come with me?"
Hanna nodded. "I need to stay here."
"Okay, sweetie," Snow wrapped her arms around her.
Hanna held onto her mom tightly. "I'm gonna miss you."
"I'm going to see you really soon." Snow kissed the top of Hanna's head. "I love you."
Hanna looked up at her mom and gave her a small smile. "I love you too. Give Neal a hug and kiss from me."
"I will," Snow said with a wink. She let go of her daughter, holding onto hope that they would all return to Storybrooke soon.
"Snow, while you're up there, will you look in on Roland for Robin Hood?" Regina asked. "I know he'd want me to ask you that."
"Of course," Snow said. "Tell him not to worry." Snow turned to her husband and pulled him close, kissing him goodbye.
Hanna smiled. This time it didn't gross her out. She loved how much her parents loved each other. She was also glad that they were actually kissing each other this time. Hanna watched her mom step back, wipe the tears from her eyes, and take her friend's hand. Ruby clicked the slippers three times, and they were gone.
Hanna walked over to her dad. He reached out his arms and pulled her close. "We're going to see her soon, I promise."
"I know we will."
They all went back to the loft to plan their next move.
"After what Hades did, we have to hit back and hard," Emma said.
"Aye love, but how?" Killian asked.
Everyone looked up when Henry came running down the stairs.
"Grandpa." Henry held out new pages to him.
Hanna ran over to her dad and looked at the pages too. She saw a picture of her mom holding Neal. "She made it back."
David looked up at his grandson and smiled. "Thanks, kid. Now let's go figure out how to join them."
