Chapter 3: Capture
They stopped in Virginia for some rest, noticing more and more mutant hate crimes popping up as they went along. Neither one of them knew how much distance they had to put between them and Bayville for the time being, but all Rogue could think about was a good nights rest. They enter the room, noticing one bed, but at the moment Rogue didn't care and went right to the bed after she placed her bag down and took her shoes off. Remy placed his things down, taking his shoes and trench coat off, then he too gets into the bed and falls asleep.
Morning light hits the room, Rogue rolling over in her sleep only to bump into a warm and firm body. Her leg had draped itself over Remy's while her arm flopped onto his chest. Remy wakes up only to notice her position as he laid on his back, rubbing his eyes as he gazed at her. Her hair was strewn about on the pillow and part of her face, her expression peaceful as she slept. He couldn't help the small grin that formed on his lips, then he stealthily slips out of bed to go to the bathroom.
Rogue groans softly as she wakes up, slowly blinking her eyes open, noticing Remy coming out of the bathroom as she rubs her eye. "Mornin' chère." He greets her as he walks over, his voice still had a bit of sleepiness to it which made the hair on her neck raise.
"Hiya." Rogue yawns, her hair in a mess.
Remy grins at her, Rogue noticing the look on his face and raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"Y' hair, 's…" He grins as his hands to a gesture to his head to show how her hair looked.
Rogue blinks, then felt her face reddens, immediately brushing her hair with her fingers to get it tamed. She hears him let out a laugh as she did this, her chucking a pillow at him as her lips were pursed. "'S okay, chère. Y' still belle wit' de bed head." Remy chuckles as he caught the pillow, his eyes full of mirth.
Rogue huffs a bit, then relaxes. "Whatevah." She says she gets up to use the bathroom.
Remy puts his shoes on, hearing Rogue come back out as he puts his coat on. "Where ya goin'?" He hears her ask.
"T' get us food." He responds as he pulls the trench coat on.
"Can ah come?" Rogue goes up to him.
Remy thinks about it, then shakes his head. "Non. 'S better if y' stay heah. 'Ll be quick."
Rogue crosses her arms, her emerald eyes boring into his red on black ones. "What's gonna happen if we both go tagethah?"
"Nothin' but we gotta be more careful wit' de sentinels an' now we gotta worry 'bout traffickers t'." Remy's expression grew serious as he stared down at the two toned southerner.
"We could take 'em." Rogue remarks.
Remy groans, then sighs. "Alright, fine, but we gotta be quick. Don' know 'bout dis area…"
"Ya worry too much, Swamp rat." Rogue pats him after getting her shoes on, then exits the room, Remy rolling his eyes and shutting the door behind him with the room key in his pocket.
They walk to a small market that was a few blocks away, Rogue getting a coffee from a small coffee shop inside. The male barista was obviously flirting with her, while she ordered her drink and thank him, Remy making a face while his eyes glared daggers behind the sunglasses he wore. Rogue got her coffee and walks up to Remy, holding one out for him. "Ya good swamp rat?" She asks.
"Mhm." Remy takes a swig of coffee after swiftly taking the coffee.
He normally didn't get jealous, but he felt a chord snap at the interaction, even though she didn't catch that the barista was flirting with her. Rogue browses for some options while Remy would glance around every now and then. She finally finds something easy, choosing just some pastries for them to eat-figuring they could just eat out for dinner. They pay for their breakfast, Rogue happily nibbling on her turnover while they walk, while Remy takes a bite of his.
A group of men were standing in a parking lot on the opposite side of the road at a gas station, laughing to themselves with a few weapons in hand and a tablet. "Hey, how many muties did we catch this morning?" One guy asks.
"Eight, but the auctioneer wants us to get at least twenty or more before noon so we can ship 'em out to be auctioned." Another answers.
The group glance over to across the street, noticing the two southerners walking back to their hotel. "You think those two are muties?" A scrawny guy asks.
"Let's see…" The leader of the group holds the tablet up in the air, zooming in with the lens.
The tablet beeps, indicating they were mutants, making the boys look at each other. "One of you should see which room they go into." The leader motions.
"I'll do it." One guy shrugs.
The two enter the lobby and take the elevator to their floor, Rogue sighing in delight as she sips her coffee. The corners of Remy's mouth twitch up into a small smile, but he couldn't help but feel like they were being watched. They get to their floor, Remy's arm snaking around Rogue's waist as he leads them to their room. Rogue raises her brow, waiting for him to unlock their door to get in. The two enter the room, unknowing to them both that a man has spotted which room was theirs, to which he retreats back down the stairs and leaves. "What's wrong?" Rogue asks.
"Feel like we're bein' watched o' somet'in'." Remy takes his sunglasses off, rubbing his jaw.
Rogue looks at him, eyebrows slightly raised. "Huh?"
"Jus' got dis feelin', which is why we should leave." Remy looks at her.
Rogue's brows furrow, but she trusted him enough to nod in agreement. They finish what little breakfast they had left then made sure they had everything before leaving the room. Remy checks them out while Rogue straps their bags to his motorcycle, felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up as she hears a car pull up and a couple men get out. She ignores the men, thinking they were just going to go check in, but as they walk by her, one asks her if she was alone. "Wouldn't ya lahke ta know." Rogue narrows her eyes.
A couple of the men 'ooed' as their friend who asked her narrowed his eyes at her. "Seems we got a southern spitfire." He comments.
"Why don't ya'll run along." Rogue growls.
"You better watch your mouth." The guy growls back.
"Dere a problem heah?" Remy asks, his voice cold as he comes out and walks up to Rogue.
"Ya girl here got a mouth. We're just trying to help her out." One of the other men say.
Remy narrows his eyes behind his sunglasses. "She don' need y' help. Le's go, chère." Remy says that last part softly to her as he placed his hand on her back, urging her to get on the motorcycle.
"Now hold on there a minute," The leader of the group says. "I think you two are mutants."
Rogue glances at Remy, eyes widening a bit, then she shoots a glare to the man. "Oh yeah? How do ya know? Ah've seen plenty of people dye their hair."
The man chuckles, pulling out the tablet. "Because this nifty device identifies muties, curtesy of Trask Industries." The scanner beeps as he holds it up to them, the two southerners feeling their stomachs drop.
Remy then pulls out some cards and charges them up, throwing them at the men. "C'mon!" Remy grabs Rogue and they jump on his motorcycle.
Remy tears out of the parking lot, the men jumping back into their truck and driving after them. Rogue holds onto him tightly, looking back to seeing them gaining on them. "Go faster!" She yells over the wind.
Remy peers into his side mirror, revving up his engine to drive faster. The truck speeds after them, chasing them down a long, winding road as they fled. Three of the five guys in the truck get some weapons ready, opening the doors to take aim. Rogue gasps as her eyes widen at the sight. She bites her lip in contemplation, then takes a deep breath. "Remy, ah'm gonna have ta use some of yer powers ta get these guys off our ass. Ya gonna be okay?"
"'Ll be fine, chère. Jus' do what y' have t'." Remy smirks.
Rogue takes her glove off and touches her finger to his cheek for a brief second, then she reaches into his pocket and pulls out some cards. She looks back and charges up a few, tossing them behind her as they speed down the road. The truck swerves as the cards explode, some of the men bracing themselves while one falls out of the truck completely. "Nice one, chère." Remy grins.
"Thanks shugah." Rogue smirks.
"They're getting away!" One man shouted at the boss who was driving.
He growls. "Not for long. Use the canon, tell Marcus to set up the net gun. It'll disable their powers if they're caught in it."
The man nods, grabbing a large canon gun from a case, loading it up and firing it at the road in front of the southerners. "Look out!" Rogue yells as the large round hits the ground in front of them, causing Remy to swerve around it but the blast knocks them and the motorcycle off to the side of the road.
Rogue tumbles, her back hitting a fallen log while Remy tumbles down a small dirt hill and lands at the bottom, ducking as his motorcycle tumbles above him and lands ten feet behind him. He grits his teeth and starts to make his way up the small incline, feeling his body aching. Rogue cries out in pain as she tries to get up, wincing in pain as her body trembled. The truck pulls up to the side of the road, the men jumping out and the one named Marcus pulling out the net gun and firing it at her, causing her to be pinned to the log under the net. "Got 'er!" Marcus grins.
Remy stumbles up, wiping some blood from his mouth and glaring at the group of men. His heart sank when he saw Rogue pinned to the log, his hand charging up several cards and throwing them. "Look out!" One man yells.
The cards explode, causing them to be blown backwards, Remy instantly rushing to Rogue who was struggling but also in pain. "Y' okay?! Y' hurt?" He asks, worry across his face.
"Mah back hurts, everythin' hurts." Rogue grimaces.
Remy tried to get the net off the log, noticing how it was caught on some branches sticking out. Rogue's eyes widen as she peers over his shoulder. "Remy! Watch out!" She warns him, but it was too late.
Marcus fired another net, pinning Remy to Rogue and the log. He tries to use his powers but found them disabled, his eyes widening in shock. "Got 'em boss." Marcus grins.
"Get them in the back of the truck." The leader orders.
They get tossed into the back, a barrier blocking them from the other half of the truck, while the leader has his men search their belongings. "We got a nineteen year old girl and twenty year old boy. They'll be useful for someone." One man comments.
"Oh, I'm sure she'll be useful." Another man smirks.
Rogue felt sick to her stomach as she lay on the floor in the net, Remy glaring and still trying to get out. The drive was long, both not knowing where they were going, but Remy moved over so he was close to Rogue to check on her. She was bleeding a little bit, her eyes lidded slightly as she laid on the floor. Remy tries to hold her hand, their nets overlapping. Rogue's emerald eyes look up at him, his red on black eyes gazing down hers in concern. "Y' doin' okay, chère?" He asks in a whisper.
Rogue nods, speaking softly. "Ah'm fahne…"
"I know y' not." He whispers, his tone serious.
"Are we gonna be okay?" She asks.
"I don' know… dese nets disabled m' powahs. Can' get us out o' heah."
The truck stops, Rogue sliding into Remy making her whimper in pain. Remy waits and listens, then the door opens and they get taken out, him grunting as he hit the ground while he hears Rogue let out a yelp. "Can' y' see she's hurt?!" Remy growls.
"Don't worry, she'll get proper care once she's bought at the auction." The leader says, staring down blankly at him, making Remy's blood boil.
They carefully place power dampening collars on them then cuff their hands in front, Rogue feeling panicked as they were ushered through a ship yard. Remy looks around at their surroundings as they walked, trying to look for any escape routes, but so far finds none which put him in a very tight spot as he could usually get out of tight situations. He could tell Rogue was in pain as she walked in front of him, his jaw tightening as he was jabbed with a gun as they were led up a ramp into a large ship.
Rogue's eyes scan their surroundings, catching glimpses of more men on the ship who were bargaining off some mutants that stood between themselves. Her eyes were wide as she glanced around, her fists tightening into small balls. "Hey Regan, we leaving tonight or tomorrow for Cali to head to the auction?" One man asks.
"Nah," the leader named Regan answers. "Gotta get these new prizes settled in, Richter, you know that."
The man called Richter glances to the two southerners, smirking a bit. He grabs Rogue's chin, making her flinch, and looks at her. "Hm, well she'll definitely be sold in a heart beat."
Remy scowls, Richter glancing up to him. "Don' touch 'er." Remy warns.
"Protective boyfriend she's got though. Whatcha gonna do mutie, huh? Your powers don't work." Richter scoffs with a grin, tauntingly.
Remy took this as an opportunity as he headbutt him, the man falling backwards to the ground with his nose bleeding. "Fuck!"Richter yells, holding his hand over his bloody nose.
Marcus punches Remy, causing him to double over as the wind gets knocked out of him. Rogue gasps as she turns and watches, knowing if she put up a fight right now she could further injury herself. "Leave him alone!" She shouts.
"Any muties that retaliate get punished," Regan scowls at Rogue, shoving her. "Take them to their quarters."
Marcus grabs Remy while Richter had gotten up and grabbed Rogue and dragged her to the opposite side of the ship. Remy peers up, then his eyes widen as he saw Rogue being dragged away to a separate side of the ship from him. "Let's go or I'll punch you again, or I could shoot you." Marcus growls.
"You get to hang out with all the other ladies." Richter sneers as he drags her down a hall, Rogue looking behind her to see Remy reluctant to leave her, then she was out of his sight.
Marcus tosses Remy into a cell, Remy immediately trying to break out, but Marcus already locked the door. "Nice try." He sniggers, then leaves.
Remy huffs as he leans back against the wall. He was at least happy to have the cuffs off, but he needed to figure out how to get off the ship and get Rogue. Looking around, he tries to figure out what he could get loose or mess with to escape, seeing as his powers would be of no use for him at the time. "If you're looking for a way out, there is none." A man across him in a cell says.
Remy snaps his head towards his voice, then walks up to the bars. "An' why's dat?"
"Because you got a whole army of men out there that could easily gun you down. You're safer in here." The man says as he sat on the floor, an m symbol over his right eye.
"'M not leavin' wit'out Rogue." Remy's brows furrow, a determined expression on his face. "Plus, 'm a t'ief. 'Ll be outta heah in no time."
The man laughs, getting up. "Good luck with that kid. Who's this Rogue person?"
"She's.. someone special." Remy answers, hands going into his trench coat pockets.
"Mm, well, she's on the other side of this ship in the womens wing. They keep us separated but also because the ladies get sold more than us. We get sold for doing dirty work for others like killing and what not. The ladies… not so much for killing but for.. pleasure or other services. I got a friend over there too, hopefully she could make your girl feel a little less frazzled." The man explains as he leans on his bars.
Remy felt his stomach drop. He had to shake his head to get the image of Rogue being sold off to a man for malicious and scandalous intent. Remy looks back up to the man across from him. "What's y' name?" He asks.
"Lucas, but I go by Bishop. My friend is called Blink,"Bishop nods. "What's yours kid?"
"Remy, but y' can call me Gambit if y' like-an' I ain' a kid. 'M twenty." Remy crosses his arms.
"Hm. Well, hopefully none of us get auctioned off right away tomorrow before we leave for the final auction. Just do as I say and you won't get beaten up." Bishop inclines.
Rogue gets tossed into her cell, but noticed it was with a few other girls. She winces in pain and looks up to see Richter lock it and grin at them all. "See you ladies later." He winks, then leaves.
Rogue scowls and wraps her arms around herself. "You okay?" A girl with strikingly green eyes and pink skin asks.
"Ah'm fahne." Rogue dismisses.
"You're clearly hurt." The girl rolls her eyes. "What's your name?"
"Rogue…" Rogue looks up at her, then noticed a few other girls who were huddling together. "They okay?"
The girl frowns, shaking her head, offering her hand out. "I'm Blink and to be honest, no. We are seen as objects and prizes here. It's not a great environment but we have no way of escaping unless we get bought by someone."
Rogue takes Blink's hand and shakily stands up. "That's terrible. Ah can't stay heah, ah hafta go fahnd mah friend."
"If your friend was a guy then he is on the other side of the ship. They don't want us to be mixed in with the guys." Blink shakes her head. "Again, we're seen as objects and we get treated nicer. Hopefully if you don't get bought too quickly, you should do as I do, it'll help you in the long run."
"How long have ya been heah?" Rogue asks.
"We move locations every week… me and my friend Bishop have been here ever since mutant traffickers first became big and when the sentinel program was rebooted sooo a month??" Blink puts a finger on her chin as she remembers.
Rogue's eyes widen. "A month?! Ah can't be heah. Ah have family ah hafta go fahnd!"
Blink frowns. "We all have family we would love to go back to, but some of us can't because they disowned us."
Rogue frowns, too, her mind worried about Remy, then she looks back to Blink. "Where is this auction being held?"
"Japan." Blink looks at her nails nonchalantly. "We are being transported to California then taking a larger ship than this to Japan. That is where the final auction is being held, there will always be smaller ones in between the main, larger ones. I suggest you get some sleep, cause you won't be able to once we are on the road-er should I say tracks."
"Tracks?" Rogue echoes.
"Taking a train to get to California. Too many of us to take cars." Blink gets up and grabs a folded blanket for Rogue. "Now sleep. No use in worrying about your guy right now. You might see him tomorrow if you're lucky."
Rogue takes the blanket, a deep frown on her face. She curls up in a corner, draping the blanket over her. Her eyes watch as Blink sits on a bed and talks softly to a few of the other girls who were either scared to death or crying. Her mind was only on one thing and that was Remy, the image of his facial expression as she was dragged away from him burned in her brain. Wincing as she tries to adjust her position for her injuries, Rogue falls asleep, wishing to be back home and everything to be back to normal.
Remy stares up at his ceiling, his mind on Rogue and how she could be doing. "If you're worried about your girl, she's fine for now." Bishop speaks up.
"Where's dis big auction bein' held?" Remy asks.
"Japan. But they move us to California to get on a bigger ship than this to get to Japan. We're moving out tomorrow, but don't think you could just try to slip away. They got guards. I've tried a couple times and still have burns on my back." Bishop explains. "Obviously we have smaller auctions in between the larger ones."
Remy sits up, looking at Bishop in the dark. "Like hell 'll let 'em auction Rogue off tomorrow."
"Well if someone's interested in her, they'll show her in the viewing area and start a bidding." Bishop shrugs.
Remy clenches his jaw, laying back down. "How often are de femme's auctioned off?"
"More than us. Sex sells, even if you are a mutant. Got some pretty bad and weird people that would do anything to get a pretty girl with some sort of ability to use for their own personal things."
Remy runs a hand through his hair, his red on black eyes gazing up at the ceiling. He wasn't going to let anything happen to Rogue. He couldn't. Shutting his eyes, he lets sleep overtake him, but it wasn't going to be a peaceful nights rest.
A/N: Added Bishop and Blink to this story. Loved Bishop in the animated series and movieverse. Would've been cool to add these two to Evolution.
Till next time!
