Chapter 8—Meeting the newest baby sister
Adam's POV
We met Dad down by the cars after school, he got Gunnar, Bella and I excused from the Study table for the day, because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding mom and the baby. Luckily for all of us we didn't have a test tomorrow since finals were next week.
"Why do I have to go," Bella whined.
"Because it's your mother and your baby sister," Dad said.
I noticed that Gunnar had made a blowing out motion with his face but said nothing, he knew something that I didn't. When we got to the hospital I was the first to hug mom and then Ollie and Gunnar. Bella refused to hug mom whatsoever.
"You ready to go and meet your sister?" Dad asked.
"Yeah sure, right Hans?" I asked.
"Yes," Hans said.
"Yep," Ollie and Gunnar said at the same time.
"I suppose so," Bella said and then rolled her eyes.
"Your chariot, my dear," Dad said to mom as the nurse arrived with a wheelchair.
Mom giggled and then said, "Oh Gordon you may need to help me."
"You alright?" Dad said as he helped mom off the bed, the nurse helped on the other side of mom.
Once mom was settled in the wheelchair I tried to put Han's on mom's lap so they could ride together.
"I walk," Hans said.
About halfway through the halls of the hospital. Han's wanted up, so he didn't have to walk anymore.
"Oh, my this is quite a group we have," said one of the security guards to us as we walked through the double doors that lead to Children's Minnesota from Abbott Northwestern.
"Yeah, these are our kids," Dad said as he showed his purple hospital band. Mom showed hers too.
"Only people 14 and up are allowed in the NICU unless the child is a brother or sister," the security guard said.
"He is full on brother. The rest are adopted 23, 17, 17 and 17," Dad said.
"Well not Gunnar but he lives in our home," Mom said.
"That is close enough, we do need some identification," The security guard said. We all handed our id's over, answered a few questions, and got a visitor badge for us to be in the NICU.
Dad led us through the hall's some more. "So vhich room is she in?" Gunnar asked.
"She is not in a hospital room, yet. That is level 3 NICU," Dad said.
"Oh," Gunnar said.
Once we got to the actual NICU nursery, we were all told we had to gown up and wash our hands thoroughly.
"Vhy must ve do this," Gunnar said.
"Because Gunnar preemies are very susceptible to infections. They want to make sure that all of the germs are off you before you can visit the babies," Dad said.
After we were all gowned up and washed our hands, we were led to the baby's isolation bed.
"Some of these babies are pretty big," I said.
"Yes, well the baby has to be a certain weight before they graduate out of the level 4 NICU to the level 3 NICU. I think three of them will be graduating next week," Dad said.
Then I saw my baby sister, she was hooked up to all kinds of wires. She had a feeding tube up her nose, iv needles in her foot and what looked like sun shades that were on her eyes. She was very small; I was scared for her.
"She's on oxygen, heart monitoring, a feeding tube, IV Fluids, she undergoing lab tests right now," Mom said.
"Does she have a name?" Ollie asked.
"Yes," Dad said.
"Kelly Audrey Jaelyn Bella Bombay," Mom said.
"That is a beautiful name mom," I said.
"Kelly means warrior, Audrey means noble strength, Jaelyn means survivor and Bella means Beautiful and God is my oath. She doesn't look that way," Mom said with tears coming down her face. With that Bella took off, through the doors of the NICU.
Bella's POV
I had to go; I could not believe that they named the baby after me. I felt that was a mistake. I didn't feel like a Bombay at all. I was a Banks a full-on Banks. I don't understand why Coach or Michele could not get that through their heads. I wanted to move back in with Philip and Seraphina. I just didn't know how to tell them. I had even started to drop Bombay from my name, I didn't want to be a Bombay anymore. I cried into the pillow that was in the waiting room that was for families. There was a place for the kids to play in.
"Bella what's wrong?" Coach asked.
"Why?" I asked.
"Why what?" Coach asked.
"Why did you have to name her after me? I am not a Bombay," I said.
"What are you talking about Bella?" Coach asked.
"I am not a Bombay. I am a Banks, I want to be a Banks," I said.
"You know you have been distant since October. What is going on?" Coach asked.
"Coach don't you get it, Adam might be yours, but I am not. Phillip wanted me, he wanted both of us. He wanted all of us. You have your kids now; you don't need to take us away from him. I want to move out," I said.
