Allie stayed in the coach while Eliza dropped left the letter at the post office. Eliza returned to the coach and asked to be taken to Scotland Yard. Eliza smiled briefly, Allie noticed. "What is that about?"Allie asked with a twinkle in her eye. Eliza looked at her with red in her cheeks, she wanted to tell Allie everything. "We will talk after we are done at Scotland Yard," Eliza replied. "Is that handsome Scottish friend of yours still there?" Allie asked. A look of sadness filled Eliza's face and her heart sank. That is part of what I have to tell you later. Allie frowned wondering what Lizzie had to share would have made her cousin go from glowing to grey that fast. Changing the subject, Allie asked "Lizzie do you know Detective Fitzroy well?" They were just pulling up to Scotland Yard as Eliza responded, "Detective Fitzroy is what he presents himself as, kind, caring and honest."
This wasn't the first time Eliza had entered Scotland Yard since William had left. She tried her best to avoid it at all costs. She longed to barge into his office and ruin his day. Shortly after checking in at the reception area, Detective Fitzroy welcomed them and asked, "Miss Alexandra Scarlet, would you please follow me this should only take a moment." Eliza watched the young detective's eyes sparkle as he offered Allie his arm. "We will be back in just a moment Miss Eliza." Eliza acknowledged him with a nod and watched them walk down the hall together, thinking they make a nice pair.
Eliza was lost eavesdropping on the conversations happening around her. It was apparent that Scotland Yard was still being overwhelmed after taking on the neighboring jurisdictions. "Hey Lizzie," a soft whisper and a pat on the shoulder got her attention. Allie was standing beside her with Detective Fitzroy. Detective Fitzroy thanked the ladies for coming in, and would stop by in a few days to provide an update on the case, and also sneaked the recommendation that Eliza should not get involved in the investigation. After his speech was completed Eliza invited Fitzroy to be prepared to stay for dinner on his next visit to the house to provide an update. Eliza watched as Allie looked at Fitzroy saying, "Please do, I can give you back your handkerchief too." Detective Fitzroy accepted while trying to hide his smile and stated he will send a messenger in advance there would be surprises.
"Miss Eliza Scarlet, Private Detective" Allie said proudly as they climbed the stairs. Opening the door to her office Eliza turned around and asked Allie, "Are you sure you're up to this? Looks like a bomb has gone off in here." Allie stepped in the office and looked around, "I take it back I want to go home." As Eliza and Allie cleaned and rearranged, Allie came across an envelope that had "Eliza" written near the top and looked as if it had been forgotten about. "Lizzie? This fell out of the stack of papers I just moved. It looks unopened." Allie said while handing it to Eliza. Eliza took it and Allie could tell the mood shifted. Allie, attempting to lighten the room teased that it must be from a secret admirer. Eliza turned the letter over making sure her cousin didn't open it a read it already. "It's from William, or that handsome Scottish man." Eliza said blankly. "And you just forgot to open William's letter?" Allie asked putting an emphasis on William that made Eliza smile and answered, "I could be wrong but I am pretty sure it says love you." Allie took it from Eliza waiving it around sarcastically saying, "Trash pile then?" Eliza grabbed it back quickly, but Allie was holding on tighter to her end and the envelope ripped two and they watched the neatly folded contents of the envelope float down to the floor. Eliza was glad Allie was back to her spunky self but was not so sure she was prepared for it.
Both ladies continued to look at the piece of folded paper on the floor. Finally Allie took a step towards it forcing Eliza's hand to swoop in a pick it up and put it in her pocket. "Tell me why the fearless Eliza Scarlet is afraid of a letter from "William" confessing his undying love?" Allie asked in a dramatic way that only Allie could do. Eliza knew Allie thought she was winning and was going to wear her down to a confession sooner or later. Eliza chose sooner because it seemed like it would end the conversation earlier. "We have been close friends as time went on we fell into what I assumed was common knowledge that I would never be what he wanted for a wife, and I was going to have to be okay with that though I have feelings for him that are bigger than I imagined them to be until he got shot and I couldn't imagine him not in my life. A few months ago he told me he loved me and then left for New York Scotland Yard for a year, hoping time apart would give us the time we needed. He said he couldn't be around me and not be with me anymore." Allie clearly knowing the answer since there was no "William" insight asked Eliza what she did after he told her this. "I said nothing, and watched him leave," Eliza answered. Allie put two and two together, "You a letter earlier, to him?" Eliza nodded, "Now I wait for his response, I feel a coward I should have told him what I wrote in person. Maybe he would still be here if I did." Allie saying with a smile, "I think we need to continue this conversation at home, unless you have enough wine here for us to drink." "You are right, we have worked hard and definitely do not have enough wine here," Eliza answered.
After dinner Eliza and Allie stayed up talking in the sitting room, on the floor like they had when they were younger. Eliza shared stories of her and the Inspectors cases. Eventually Eliza asked Allie if she had suitors, Allie shook her head no, and said she never stayed in the same place long enough to be introduced to anyone. Together they drank and laughed. When they eventually made it up stairs, Allie reassured Eliza if William was anything like she said he was there is no way he wouldn't write back, or stop loving her.
