Toothless and Hiccup joined the rest of dragons who were sitting on the raised platform. Hiccup couldn't believe his eyes. He looked out over a sea of dragon heads. Big and small and species Hiccup didn't even know about. He noticed that even the Terrible Terrors were taking it seriously. The other alphas looked at each other then at the pair.
"Who are you?" An obscenely large Nightmare asked curiously. His voice deep and menacing. But his posture wasn't. The other five alphas also chirped the same question one after another.
Hiccup looked at Toothless, who simply nodded.
"We're the, uh, new alphas of Helheim's gate. We took it from The Red Queen."
"You two?" The Nightmare took a small step back.
"How?" One of the two Nadder's asked.
"That must be why there are so many more here this year." The other Nadder told the Zippleback. Who agreed with her. Hiccup was confused about her comment. He turned to Toothless again.
"I thought that dragons from Helheim's Gate came here every year?" Hiccup asked the Night Fury.
"They do. But only if you were lucky. Hiccup you must realize that she was no normal dragon. She was a titan. Like all the other titans she lived in a place that could protect dragons that needed it. Like the other titans, she also possessed the ability to force her will onto people. Normally titans only do this if something is wrong and need to control a situation. But even as I say that, I don't know how true that is. With how organized we've become as a species, I doubt it's really necessary anymore.
From what I know and have learned, when she learned what she could do, she started using it all the time. This resulted in bringing dragons in and not letting them leave. The only way that dragons got away was if they happened to be out of her range when she called for us. But that wouldn't happen too often, and she was good at making sure she you didn't get away. She was pushed out by the other titans, which is why she lived in Helheim's Gate. Unlike all the other titans, she possessed wings, and although she could only use them very little she could get there. The only reason she hadn't been dealt with by the others is simply due to how Helheim's looks.
You probably haven't noticed Hiccup but, the rocks that surround our home rise up from the sea floor. Much like the stone above the water, what lies underneath are jagged, sharp, deadly rocks that could pierce even the thickest of scales. Even with the awesome power of the titans, it would take weeks or months for them to break and clear the stone surrounding us. We, without a doubt in my mind, live in the safest place in the world." Toothless explained.
"I'm sure you'll be summoned to one or more of the titans for that. They'll want to know how you pushed her out of her home. And where she's gone." The Zippleback told them. Hiccup looked around at the others.
"She didn't leave, she's dead. We killed her." The dragons on the platform all gave Hiccup the same look, astonished.
"You, what? How?" One of the Nadders asked. "She was a titan. She was invincible. You must be lying."
"He's not lying." Toothless Defended him. "We killed her ourselves. You can ask anyone from Helheim's. They'll all tell you the same thing."
"I can't trust what you say. Night fury." The Monstrous Nightmare told him. "Last I heard, you were her right hand. How are we supposed to believe you're not just saying that. Your Queen is meleviant and dangerous. How are we supposed to think that she doesn't have you under her control. How are we supposed to know your not trying to trick others into coming into her influence?"
Toothless looked over at Hiccup.
"Because of him." He smiled.
"What about him?"
"He couldn't be controlled by her. And yet he's telling you the same thing I am. He broke me from her control. I couldn't hear her call anymore. He's the only voice in my head now."
"What is he?"
"Human. Mostly. We've had a few run ins with a some people who think they're helping. Some more than others. Like the one who did that to him." Toothless circled behind Hiccup and nuzzled his hip and side. "And no matter what he says, he looks good." Hiccup blushed. "At the same time allowing us and him to speak to each other, so we didn't have to guess what the other wanted."
"What is he to you Night fury? Slave? Friend? More?"
"More. So much more. He's my mate and a damned good one at that."
"Mate? How'd that come to be?"
"A need for each other. Hiccup righted a wrong against me. Unfortunately, or well, no, fortunately, I would still need him after the fix.
As for him, correct me if I'm wrong Hiccup, he needed someone who accepted him. Someone who wasn't going to judge him for every tiny mistake. He didn't need that and it wasn't helping him. On top of that no one was helping him fix the mistakes. No one was there for him. So I took that roll. To be his friend. Someone who was there for him when he needed it. That's how it began.
Then came the day he broke The Queen's control over me. I don't know how but his voice rang out over hers. Drowning out the call. Each time her voice becoming easier to ignore. I couldn't even hear it after a while. Like the humans. Again I had to make up for that. For my sake.
I've learned that Hiccup doesn't care if you're even or not. He'll give and give until he can't anymore, and never ask for anything in return. Except maybe some kisses and a warm place to sleep." The other dragons chuckled.
"I know that feeling." A few of the alphas said variants of. Hiccup felt more at ease.
