Hiccup swore to himself. He grabbed the small amount of dragon nip and mashed it against the dragon's nose. He hoped that it still had enough of the scent left to give any effect. Toothless took deep breaths. The shooting pain in his wing dulling only a little. Significantly less than before. But it was enough for him to be able to think, talk and least importantly worry.
"Hiccup, how's it look?" He moaned through his teeth. Hiccup sighed to himself.
"It looks like it's back where it started. I was close but then you moved and now I'm going to have to start over.
"Sorry. I was trying to stay still but something poked me or something. I don't know what it was." Hiccup shook his head.
"That's probably my fault. Damn. I didn't even thing to guide it. I'm sorry Toothless."
"It's ahmm, fine." Toothless huffed. "I guess just be more careful next time." It was taking a lot of effort and energy to speak and Hiccup could tell.
"Maybe you should just go to sleep. You have to be tired. All that flying and the dragon nip must be doing a number on you." Toothless smacked his lips, agreeing with his human.
"You're right. I guess we can try again later. We can have someone sent out first thing in morning for fresh dragon nip. Make sure I can't feel a thing." He laughed through his nose.
Hiccup agreed and slowly laid down next to mate. Slowly crawling under the broken wing to act as a blanket.
"Good night Toothless." Hiccup whispered. Toothless hummed back to him.
Hiccup periodically pinched himself so he'd stay awake. Once he felt reasonably sure that Toothless was asleep, he slowly slipped out of the dragon's grasp. It was dark and Hiccup could barely see a thing. He felt around for Toothless' broken wing. He sat in front of the wing just as before. He searched for the tip of the bone and lightly clamped his thumb and index finger down on it so he guide it. Again he began to push the bone back into place. He went much slower than his last attempt, listening for changes in the dragon's breathing. At one point Hiccup was afraid Toothless had woken up. He sat and waited for something to happen. For Toothless to say something or move or yell. But he simply went back to breathing regularly and Hiccup continued his mission. Slowly but surely it slipped back into place and Hiccup hopped that when he let go it wouldn't slip again. He unclamped his fingers from the tip and didn't feel anything move. Hiccup took a deep breath and slowly let go of the wing completely. He sat for a second before running his finger down the length of the wing, checking to see if any of the bone wasn't lining up properly. He could feel a small ridge on the spot where it broke and he played with it a little to try and minimize it as much as possible. Happy with his work Hiccup backed away and let Toothless sleep.
The only thing keeping Hiccup up now was his worry that Toothless would move and it would slide out of place again. But eventually he did fall asleep and when he woke up Toothless was still out. He moved out from under the wing and went to the edge of the platform. He was looking to see if everything was okay. He was happy to find that nothing serious had happened from the time they had got home the night before to now. He watched his people for a bit. Seeing new faces randomly exploring or being guided around by new friends. There hadn't even been a fight or some sort of test of strength, yet. Hiccup desperately wanted to join his pack, and begin to sort everything out and get everything running again. But he had a bigger responsibility to attend to. He turned back around towards Toothless. He checked the wing yet again.
Now that he could see the wing in full light, he wasn't as happy with his work as he was the night before. He shook his head walked back towards the edge of the platform and waved his arms, getting the attention of a few dragons. They flew up to him.
"What do yuh need boss?" The first to land asked.
"Find some of the medical dragons for me." They nodded and flew off. Hiccup again walked back towards Toothless and began to pace. He didn't have to wait too long and was quickly joined by a Tide Glider and a Prickleboggle.
"What did you need, Hiccup?" The light blue Tide Glider asked. Hiccup stopped in front of Toothless.
"Last night while we heading home, Toothless broke his wing. I've set it back in place but I'm worried that he he starts moving around it'll move again. I don't know how I could create a brace for it. I was thinking about making something that hardens over it so he couldn't move it at all, but I wouldn't even know where to start. I know you guys heal quickly and I wouldn't worry about it at all if it was anything else. But if he can't fly after this." Hiccup crouched down and placed his hand on the Night Fury's broad head. "Then we'd be back to step one. Him not being able to fly and me creating something to fix that. But this situation is different. I couldn't do the same thing as before.
Anyway it there any way you can help?"
Both the dragon's moves from where they were sitting to look at what Hiccup was talking about. They could see the damaged part of the wing. Easily seeing where the scales didn't sit property against each other, while others were missing entirely. They all looked and talked for a long while. The whole time Hiccup was expecting Toothless to wake up but even by the time the two other dragons left and a plan had been made he was still out. Hiccup had begun to worry. But he knew what was happening. He'd done the same thing after Toothless ate his leg. Being completely exhausted while your body repairs itself.
Hiccup wondered if because, in general, the dragons heal faster if something like that took a larger toll on them. Maybe it wasn't unnatural for a dragon to sleep for very long times after a serious injury. He continued to wonder and worry as the day slowly passed him by. More than a few dragons had come up to ask him something but immediately left after seeing him tending to his mate.
As the day wound down Hiccup started to panic. Even as he curled up next to Toothless, something that would normally calm him, wasn't helping. He tossed and turned, unable to find any comfortable way to sleep. Eventually he gave up on being comfortable and just laid there hoping he would fall asleep.
