The old Nightmare sat in thought for a moment. He was thinking about what the Night Fury said. He and many others considered him very wise but even he was coming up short with answers. "Something that could scare the Night Fury was not a good thing to have around" He thought.
"You're going to have to explain this one to me. What puts your human above the rest. What makes time 'terrifying' while all the others are just scary." He watched as Toothless looked across the ocean and stop after panning for a couple seconds.
"In that direction." Toothless pointed with his snout. "There was a house. It's gone now. It's ashes blown away in the wind. It was the first and only time I've been scared of him. It was the first time that I realized a few different things all at once. The first is that not only is he smart but he can swing the axe too. The second is along the same vein. Hiccup is very willing to give you warning after warning, after warning, but eventually you will force his hand, and he will fight you, and he will win. Or at least he'll make sure that he won't lose.
And now he has a giant army at his disposal, and an extremely well fortified area to command from. We're very lucky that he is as kind as he is. I'm sure a lot of people doesn't matter who, Human, Dragon, Wolf, House Cat, would have immediately taken there new found power and made a few shows of it. Yet here we are waiting to defend a place so secure that even hundreds of years later Humans still can't figure out how to get to the beaches. And yet even if they did, that would force whoever was leading at the time to attack. And our secret would be safe again.
There's a lot that Hiccup has taught me. Arguably the most important is control of oneself. Whether he does it on purpose or not, Hiccup doesn't think it's necessary to constantly show of your power. Which I think has attributed to his success as an alpha. He brings his people up alongside him, instead of succeeding by himself and bringing everyone with him. He wants us all to succeed." Toothless felt his heart swell with pride.
"That isn't a reason to be afraid. That doesn't make him worse than the rest. Staying safe and holding your true power isn't terrifying." The Nightmare explained.
"You haven't seen what I have."
"Of course I haven't, I'm not you."
"Just know that if you did. If you could smell the melted skin and burning blood. If you could have seen the hate in the eyes of his own people when they found us." Toothless turned his head to look at the Nightmare. "Then you would know what I mean. You would know why his restraint is the scariest thing about him."
"I'm off then. Don't push yourself too hard. You're still healing." He spread his wings.
"Hiccup doesn't just win, he proves points." Toothless called after him. He watched the old dragon float down and enter their home. He shook his head of his thoughts of the past and looked to the future. He dove back down into the fog to make a few more passes at his obstacle course before heading in himself to look for Hiccup. He found Hiccup in their den, writing something.
"What's that?" The Night Fury asked, padding up behind his human. Hiccup automatically leaned forward, allowing Toothless to slip in behind him. Once in place the dragon looked over his shoulder. "It's amazing that you can still remember how to write in your old language." Hiccup hummed. "So what does it say?"
"It's notes on that Nadder that attacked me."
"You and your notes. Almost a better pairing than us." Toothless chuckled. It also got Hiccup to stop for a second to shake his head. Hiccup lifted his leg and pulled one of the Nadder's spikes from under it. He examined it for a second before holding it up for Toothless.
"What are these black cracks in this? I haven't seen this before." Toothless peered at the spike.
"Oh, it's just old. You probably haven't seen it before because it isn't common. Since most Nadders shed their spikes often, it's rare to see this. Basically this spike wasn't shed for a very long time. That can be due to a number of things like being in a stubborn spot where the skin refuses to let go, or it can be due to not eating enough so they will actively won't shed them since they would have a hard time regrowing, and being defenseless is obviously a death sentence."
"So then what's the black stuff then? Blood or something?"
"It's most likely dirt. It gets caked in and is hard to get out. It doesn't help that the oil from their skin mixes with it and makes it impossible to get out. Some of them liked that though since it would smooth out the spike like it was normal." Toothless explained.
"How do you know to much about this?
"We used to see it more often before, you know. Some of the more crafty would use it to their advantage. Since the spikes get all splintered some would use them like bombs. They would shoot them at the ground so that they would break into little pieces and hope that the shards would hit people."
"Wow. That's actually really interesting. Do you know stuff like that about all the species?"
"You aren't the only one who keeps notes Hiccup. Mine may not be as extensive as yours, but I have enough to get by." Hiccup nodded as he continued to write what Toothless had told him. The seconds passed as Hiccup was finishing line after line of notes. "In other news." Toothless broke the silence. "I believe I can can get us to Berk soon. A week, maybe two." Hiccup closed his notes and tossed them alongside all the others. He pressed himself harder against his dragon's side.
"Are you sure? I don't want to rush it."
"Yeah. It'll be fine. I've been getting better and faster."
"I thought I told you to not push yourself too hard." Hiccup chastised.
"I'm not. I started slow and worked up to where I am now. Don't worry, I did as you asked." He bumped Hiccup's shoulder with his snout. "Okay?"
"Yeah, okay." He reached up and scratched the dragon's nose. "Thanks Toothless."
"What are you thanking me for? I don't think I've done anything recently that would require you to thank me."
"You know why." Hiccup whispered. "For everything you do." Hiccup shifted himself so that he was sitting more under Toothless' chin.
"There is no need to thank me for something I want to do Hiccup. Or are going to do anyway. Thank you for being kind and considerate and doing it anyway." He rested his head on top of Hiccup's. "Love you Hiccup." Hiccup reached up again and rubbed the dragon's neck.
"Love you too bud."
