The morning came and Hiccup and Toothless tried to pretend that the sun didn't shined down on them, like it was angry about what they'd done the night before.
"Toothless? You awake?" His voice muffled by the dragon's chest pressed up against his face. Toothless sighed.
"Yes, unfortunately." He grumbled. Hiccup laughed.
"We need to get up, we could be in a lot of danger." Hiccup yawned. Toothless lifted his head and looked around the edge of the cove.
"I don't see anything." He placed his head back and closed his eyes. Hiccup didn't want to fight him on going back to sleep, he felt as if he could have slept the whole day through. But he also knew that they should be heading home and getting out of the potential danger of being on Berk. He started to weakly push himself out of Toothless' grasp. His body screaming at him, telling him not to move or he'd ache even more. When he was free of the dragon's hold he realized just how much of a mistake that was. While the cool air felt nice against his skin, it made him flinch and made his muscles tense up. He tried to focus on relaxing his back since it's what took the most punishment the night before. Toothless had opened one of his eyes to watch Hiccup struggle.
"Realizing your mistake yet?"
"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, shup, up, ow, ow, ow."
Toothless rolled over and got up. His legs not too happy about having to be used. He stretched and unfurled his wings, and finally shook himself awake.
Hiccup was still laying on the ground. Toothless looked down at him.
"Anything I can do to help?" He smiled. Hiccup stopped writhing for a second to look up.
"You've helped enough."
"Sure I believe that. So would you like help getting into the pond to clean off?" Toothless offered. Hiccup looked away from him.
"Yes please."
"Flip onto your stomach then, it'll be easier to help you up from there." Hiccup silently agreed and slowly turned himself over. Toothless sniffed at him. "That's going to take a long time to come off you."
"Your scent always takes a long time to ware off. Isn't that the point?" Hiccup grabbed at the leg Toothless offered him. He was slowly lifted up to his feet. Hiccup felt exhausted. Toothless dropped himself down allowing Hiccup to climb on his back. They started towards the water.
"Yes that's the point but it's nice either way. It's another reminder that someone's there for me. And how lucky I am to have found someone so early in my life. And now I don't have to worry that person won't live as long as I will." Toothless stopped at the shore of the pond. "You've made a lot of people's lives better and I get to benefit from it the most." Hiccup didn't say anything so Toothless started into the water. Soon they were in over their heads. Hiccup silently thanked the gods that the water wasn't freezing. They both felt their bodies start to loosen up and actually start to properly function.
"You're so soft." Hiccup laughed. If we lived in the village people would make fun of you if they heard you."
"Expressing love for your mate is considered weak? How do humans get far enough to procreate if love is weak?"
"It's not that it's weak. Just that doing it openly in front of other people would make them want to poke fun at you a little."
"Do you want me to stop?" Toothless asked. Hiccup treaded water towards Toothless. He grabbed his dragon's shoulder to keep his head above water.
"No, that isn't what I'm saying. It just a cultural difference I've noticed while living amoungst dragons. Dragons aren't embarrassed to show their affection around each other. I think it's because of how each species lives. Since humans live apart from each other, things like sex or cuddling became things your do privately in your home. But since we live all together it's different. It normal to see couples being together. It was a little weird to see when we first took over Helhiem. I wasn't used to it and it made me feel weird. But as we settled in and realized that it was normal, I like it more and more.
So much so that I don't know if I'd be able to live in a house like that again. Even if we did move to Berk for some reason, I'd have to convert the great hall into the new nest just so we'd have something familiar for anyone who moved with us.
If we moved at all. I like where I live, how I live, and who I live with."
Toothless dove under the water and rose up under Hiccup. He swam them to shore.
"So you're over converting them to our side?"
"Well, no. But living here isn't as appealing as it used to be. I have somewhere I'm meant to be. Someone I'm meant to be with and that person doesn't exactly like Berk that much, understandably. Plus I have too much to handle already. Having to deal with everyone on Berk too? I can already tell I'm going to get nightmares from just thinking about it." Hiccup shivered as the cool morning air blew against him. He climbed down onto the grass.
"Do you want to eat now or when we get back?" Toothless asked. "I wouldn't trust those fish from yesterday, so I'll have to get more.
"We should eat before we go. Since we didn't get a chance yesterday."
"Yeah that was unfortunate." Toothless smiled. Toothless turned back to the pond and slipped in. Hiccup watched the dark form as best he could. Soon it came back and dropped a couple of fish at his feet. "I'll get a fire started for you then go back in for my own." Hiccup nodded and they both headed over the remains of their fire from the night before. Hiccup piled some of the wood head gathered and Toothless lit it for him. Hiccup skewered his breakfast and waited for it to cook and Toothless to return to him again.
While he waited Hiccup looked around the cove that ultimately brought him and Toothless together. Where he had to abandon the wounded dragon every day. He remembered the sloppy way they had to leave and odd life they lived for years. It made him wonder just how different his life would have been if he'd told someone else about Toothless. He wondered what his life could have been, but as Toothless exited the water his heart swelled and he was mad that he'd even thought about that.
"You might want to take your fish off the fire." Toothless snapped Hiccup out of his thought. Hiccup quickly realized what Toothless said and reached into the fire for his food. Toothless laid near him and patiently waited for his mate to finish eating.
"Ready to go?" Toothless asked.
"Yeah, we should get out of here before someone finds us." Hiccup got up and climbed onto Toothless back. "Hey, would you pass over the village before we go? I want to see what it looks like during the day. Toothless lifted off and suddenly they were above the trees. The rush of flying hit them both and Toothless shot forward. Pumping his wings as fast and hard as he could, pushing himself to go faster than ever before. No time had passed as they rocketed over Berk. The loud whistle of Toothless able to be heard for seemingly miles. Toothless circled around and went higher as he slowed down. Making sure they were out of range of anything that could get them.
Hiccup looked down at the tiny people who had come out of the woodworks to see what the commotion was. He could just make out people pointing up at them. He took a greater look at Berk and was happy to see that the village had been built out since they didn't have to use so many resources on repairs anymore.
As he looked over Berk he came to the realization that this no longer felt like home and the little flame in him that was trying to fight for it was extinguished. Berk was no longer his home and he was okay with that.
"I'm ready to go Toothless." Hiccup said into the dragon's ear. Toothless nodded and turned for home.
