They both tumbled over with Toothless landing on top of Hiccup. The dragon floundered around for a second to get back onto his feet leaving Hiccup getting repeatedly crushed until Toothless found his feet. The group of humans stopped their conversation to watch. Toothless never got that chance as the Nightmare charged them both and collided with Toothless, rolling him over to his other side. It did give him the momentum to get back up on all fours. He got down and was ready to charge the Nightmare back when suddenly Hiccup was standing on the Nightmare's neck and grabbing his horns and forcing his head every which way.
"Seems Hiccup's joined us." Toothless called out.
"Good." The Nadder huffed as she jumped up and spring bored of the Nightmare's side sending him flying away. Luckily for Hiccup he'd let go just in time and gracelessly fell, at least landing on his feet. The Nightmare on the other hand wasn't so fortunate as he'd been flung into Skullcrusher who'd been ready. The Rumblehorn used his weight and threw himself at the Nightmare making him fly back towards the middle of the circle of dragons.
"Are you alright?" Hiccup asked first. The Nightmare took a second to stand and looked rather dazed. But he shook himself and regained his composure.
"Oh I'm fine." He laughed then sighted down the Nadder. He took a deep breath and shot fire at the smaller dragon, who was able to make it behind the large stone pillar in the middle of the area.
"HEY! No fire." Toothless and Hiccup called out at the same time.
"We aren't trying to burn this place down before we can use it."
"Sorry, got ahead of myself there." The Nightmare called back. "But you behind the rock, we got unfinished business."
Hiccup laughed but felt a presence behind him. He tried to turn around to defend himself but quickly had his feet swept out from under him and landing on his back. He tried to get away but a large paw landed on his chest, immobilizing him completely.
"Look at what I caught." Toothless growled. Hiccup lifted his bottom half and wrapped his legs around Toothless', trying to get some leverage to move the dragon's paw. Toothless wasn't going to let that happen and took one of Hiccup's feet into his mouth and started to slobber all over it. Hiccup lost his concentration and released his grip on the dragon's leg. His foot popping out of the dragon's mouth and joining his other one back under the dragon.
"Not fair." Hiccup struggled.
"And what would be fair?" Toothless asked. '
"If you let me go."
"Admit defeat and I'll let you go." The dragon smiled.
"Never. Not against you." Hiccup tried to push the dragon off himself again.
"It doesn't matter how much you try that, it isn't going to work. Now all you have to do is say that you've lost and I'll let you go."
Hiccup continued to struggle. He kicked at Toothless as hard as he could.
"Get off me." Hiccup yelled.
"Then say it." The two started at each other in a stalemate, not noticing that someone else had walked up to them. Then Toothless was suddenly off of him. Hiccup looked over to Toothless and saw his dad standing in front of the dragon. He watched as his dad raised his hand and struck Toothless again. Hiccup shot up to his feet and jumped between the two.
"Dad? What do you think you're…" Hiccup was knocked out of the way. When he got up again he saw Toothless on top of his father. He saw Toothless' mouth glowing and the sound of a plasma blast charging. Hiccup got up again and then knelt down in front of the two. He placed a hand of Toothless snout.
"Please stop." He whispered to his dragon. Toothless swallowed the plasma blast and got off of Stoick. Hiccup looked down at his father. "You should be more careful, if you're going to do something dumb like that." Hiccup warned. Stoick slowly stood up.
"The damned thing was hurting you." Stoick yelled.
"No he wasn't." Hiccup responded calmly. On the side things were getting more tense as the other dragons were blocking the humans from getting towards or even seeing Stoick very well. They heard him yell but couldn't see what was happening. Toothless rushed over to the other group hoping he could defuse the situation.
"Well it damn well looked like it."
"Look dad I'm sure it did. But I wasn't in any sort of danger. These dragons are some of my most loyal. I trust them all. Especially Toothless. Dragons like to rough house when they play. I'm sure it looked like they were hurting each other and me but I assure you I was fine. They know that I'm not as durable as they are and they pay attention to that as much as they can. And that thing with Toothless wasn't anything either. He just had me pinned down enough that I couldn't move but nothing more. I could still breathe fine and everything.
I know it must have looked dangerous but I assure you I was fine. On the other hand, when he had you pinned down you nearly died. You were staring down death. You're lucky that Toothless doesn't fire those things without me telling him to, cause those other humans either would have gone with you or would have left without a chief.
I know it's hard to tell but you're going to have to learn between a real threat and issue and what's normal to them. Cause it can be a fine line. And know that I don't blame you for what you did. You thought I was in danger and acted. I can't fault you for that. You're just going to have to learn."
Meanwhile Toothless was trying to calm a group of people he couldn't talk to and a group who didn't see the whole situation and were acting to protect their alpha.
"You three need to calm down." Toothless ordered. He stepped in between the two groups. Toothless looked for Skullcrusher and found him laying down just watching everything.
"They attacked you." The Nightmare growled. He eyed up the humans who had their hands on their weapons ready to draw them.
"It was a misunderstanding. They don't know any better. Hiccup's father thought I was hurting him."
"But at this point they know he's a lot tougher than he looks."
"Sure, I guess. But that doesn't mean much. All they see is that we're way bigger than he is. We know that we can go rough on him and not worry but they don't. There are things that we have to pay attention to and learn now that we're trying to ally with a group of humans. There are going to be misunderstandings from both sides. We just have to learn and so will they. So stand down, nothing's wrong."
The three took a moment but one after another they relaxed and walked away. Toothless sat next to Skullcrusher and watched Hiccup and Stoick talking.
"No response to that from you?" Toothless asked.
"I saw what happened. No need to over react."
"Seems you're the only one."
"No need to worry about them. They were just doing what they thought was right. They saw one of their alphas get attacked, so they went to defend him by blocking others from getting involved."
"I hope more of our people act so calmly in situations like this."
"Some will and others will make the situation worse. At least those three had the patience to wait for orders. Others are likely to take matters into their own claws."
"Hopefully there won't be something that makes them resort to retaliation. Rather not crush one of Hiccup's dreams now that he's so close to it." Toothless huffed.
