"Fine, I'll jump in. But if things don't work out, promise me that we'll pull out of this."
"That sounds like a lack of faith Gobber."
"More like an escape plan."
"Fine. If things are beyond saving we'll back out. But I'm also going to make sure things go well." Stoick hopped off the table he'd been sitting on.
"I'm aware."
"Alrighty. Let's group back up with Hiccup. I'm sure you and him will have a bunch of stuff to talk about. And I'm sure it'll be very interesting to listen to." Stoick met up with Skullcrusher and the female Rumblehorn. He placed a hand on Skullcrusher's side to get his attention. "Sorry to interrupt you two but we need to find Hiccup. Mind bringing us to him?"
The Rumblehorn huffed and got to his feet, then dropped his shoulder for Stoick and Gobber to climb on. Stoick hopped on with practiced ease and after a bit of scrambling Gobber was on as well. Stoick gave his mount a healthy pat on the back, telling them they were ready to go.
"Sorry for taking him away from ya'. I'm sure he'll be back soon enough." Stoick called to the female. The Rumblehorn took off and made his way through traffic and landed with Toothless and Hiccup in sight. The pair of humans slid off and Stoick gave Skullcrusher a good push trying to get the Rumblehorn to go back to the forge. "Alright big guy, I saw you and Plates being all cozy. You best get back to her before she gets all mad about you leaving. Trust me, you don't want her mad at ya."
The Rumblehorn turned and flew off. The pair of vikings joined Hiccup and Toothless and the handful of other dragons lying around.
"I'm surprised you're able to get through to Skullcrusher. He's had a hard time learning to understand our language. He's picked up some, but Toothless still has to translate most of the time."
"Don't you just talk to them in their language though?"
"As much as I can, sure. But it's hard on the throat. Some days I can go all day, and others I'm not even going to bother to try. Plus Toothless can understand me in either language so I'm set there.
"Mmm, I see. Well I don't know if Skullcrusher is actually understanding me. I think he just understands that Plates wasn't going to be happy with him if he didn't come back."
"Plates?" Hiccup asked.
"Yeah? That female Rumblehorn. The one you had to cut off all those rotten armour plates around her neck and back? That one?"
"I'm just surprised someone who wasn't me gave one of these guys a name. You even named her how I would."
"I think the idea of earning your name is interesting. She, along with the other ones you guys saved have gone through enough to earn one. Just have to come up with em'."
"Almost better that way. Don't have to live with a name that doesn't work for you."
"You were a hiccup, Hiccup. Smallest damned thing I've ever saw. We didn't think you were gonna make it through the first night. Then you were the loudest things around for a Thor's mile. And I may not have been a great dad but gods above did you always stand in the wrong place.
Then all this now. So you don't get to tell me that you think your name doesn't fit you."
"I didn't say that."
"You were implying it though."
"Either way." Hiccup changed topics. "How'd you like the forge Gobber?"
"Might be the best forge I've ever seen. Surely wasn't expecting something so nice in a place like this."
"It used to be just an anvil and a pale of water on the top side but I knew I'd eventually want you to come here so I had a handful of my people make that room for me. They did a fantastic job on it in my opinion."
"How did you get them to make it?"
"Well it was made in the same way we did the ceiling here sorta. So that room is completely under the water. By design. I had a bunch of rock eating dragons eat rocks and then swim underwater to where I wanted the room to be. Then they puke up the lava and got it to stick against the original rock of the mountain. So I had them make basically just a big glob of new rock. Had them make some support pillars where I thought they needed to be and boom the shell of a new room.
So now that I had a big glob of rock we had to carve the inside of it out. I experimented with a few different ways to do that. From having our Whispering Death try to drill the rock carefully. And while it did work for the most part we did have to repair the rock in places which felt dangerous. Silent is very good at his job but he can only be so precise.
Then I used Change Wing acid to see how that would turn out. It did melt the rock but it was a mess to clean up.
I did try to just have some dragons melt the rock but it got so hot in there and it wasn't really working.
So in the end I just had to acquire some tools and do the precision work myself." Hiccup explained.
"How do you prevent it from getting too hot when the forge is running?" Gobber asked enthusiastically.
"I'm sure you saw the vent above it."
"Ah that's what I figured. But where does it vent to? Just outside?"
"Yeah basically it's attached to the side of the mountain. Just so it's not just sticking up out of the water."
Stoick looked at Toothless and chuckled. The dragon in question looking rather bored.
"Get used to this Toothless." Stoick called. "It's always like this when they're together. Even when Hiccup was a kid."
The dragon huffed and grumbled. Hiccup leaned over until his head was resting on his dragon's.
"Oh no complaining, I talk to you all day everyday. Plus Gobber is the only person I can talk to about smithing and stuff."
"I'm aware." Toothless wiggled his head under Hiccup's cheek making him giggle.
"So where'd you get your tools and things from?" Gobber asked, and crossed his arms.
"Eh heh, about that." Hiccup sat up. "From here or there. Trading with Johann."
"Hiccup, I don't remember Johann, one of my anvil's."
"Oh uh yeah. I uh kinda needed it so…"
"So you stole it."
"Hey, I didn't steal anything." Hiccup held his hands up and smiled.
"And the tools?"
"Some of those are from Johann."
"Some?"
"Like five of them." Hiccup defended himself. Gobber raised an eyebrow. "Ok fine, one is from Johann."
"And the rest?"
"Not all of them are yours. I did make a few myself. I am a master smith you know."
"Who said that?"
"You, I guess." Hiccup pointed at his dad. "He said so."
"You told him that, Stoick?"
"What? It's what you said." Stoick defended himself.
