The group of humans stayed for a bit longer. Washing up and as requested washing their clothes after some grumbling from the humans. But eventually the heat became too much and the group left. Damp clothes in hand the humans mounted up on their dragons and were brought back to the top of the mountain. Toothless and Hiccup retired to their nest for the night.
"You worried about tomorrow?" Toothless asked as Hiccup settled down for the night.
"I don't know." Hiccup leaned back against Toothless. "I think as long as my dad makes it to the ship it'll be fine. I just don't want Black and Blue getting hurt. There's already so much going on without someone getting super injured. Or dying for that matter."
"They'll be fine, Hiccup. While they may not be the most in tune Seashocker I've ever met. When they do agree on something or are given orders, they're the best around."
"I know. But it's just another thing to add to the pile of problems we already have."
"At least we're able to solve this one pretty easily and you and I don't even have to be the ones in danger." Toothless curled himself around Hiccup.
"I suppose that is true. But we don't even know what will happen if something goes wrong when he gets on the ship. What if they attack him or something?"
"That's a fair question. Maybe we figure out a way for him to signal if he's in danger?" Toothless wondered.
"Oh! That's so smart." Hiccup sat up. "I could modify one of those sword hilts I've been working on. The ones with the Nightmare saliva in them."
"That stupid firesword thing you're trying to make work?"
"Firstly, they're not stupid. Secondly, yes. Maybe I could make it shoot something out so we could see it. Then we'd know if something's wrong. Oh, Toothless you're a genius."
"I'm glad someone recognizes it."
"I need to go work on this real fast." Hiccup stood up.
"And by fast, you mean all night, right?"
"If that's what it takes."
"I suppose I'll come along. Make sure you don't hurt yourself." Toothless shook himself and stood up before dropping his shoulder. "Hop on I'll take you."
"Are you actually going to take me or just gonna fly around until I get tired and come back here?" Hiccup tapped his foot and crossed his arms.
"I'll actually bring you down to the workshop, don't worry. I can sleep down there just as well as up here."
"Good." Hiccup climbed onto Toothless' back and the pair quickly dove down to the workshop. Toothless stopped just outside where Plates was sitting. Hiccup jumped off and greeted her. "Hey big girl, how yuh feeling?"
"I'm fine. That other human has been helping me with my fake plates." She said happily.
"Really? Mind if I look them over. I'm just curious as to what he's done."
"Of course you may." She smiled. "I think he made something new for me but I couldn't understand him. Skullcrusher tried to explain it to me but I don't think he knew what he was talking about." She explained. Hiccup began to check her over and wowed at what he was seeing.
"Oh I see. And this is like this now." Hiccup continued to move and look. "Oh that's so smart." Hiccup took a step back and was beaming. "He's done a whole ton of work on this. New buckles that lay flatter so they don't dig into your skin so much. Raised and folded edges on the plates and spacers so they don't clank together as much. He even changed the spacing around your wings. I bet you could fly without the base of your wings becoming irritated from rubbing. What fantastic work."
"So what's that mean for me then?" She asked.
"It means you won't wake everyone up when you move around and I bet you could fly just as easily as you could before. With the exception of having fake plates you're a Rumblehorn again. Of course we'll still need to keep an eye on your plate rot. Make sure we got it all. But as it stands you can go back to being rough and tumble just like the rest."
"Really?" She smiled.
"Yeah I don't see why not."
"Thank you, thank you!" The huge female jumped around. Her metal plates clanking quietly. She stopped and looked at the pair. "I wasn't sure the rumors about you were true but I'm glad I came here."
"Rumors?" Hiccup asked.
"Well yeah? Of course there are rumors about you in the other packs. Ever since your speech nearly everyone has been curious about you. And of the Night Fury. Many don't believe he's been tamed."
"Tamed? Toothless didn't need to be tamed. He was being used as a weapon by a monster." Hiccup clenched his jaw.
"Say what you will but we all know what he's done. Even if it was against his own will." Plates tried to sooth.
"But that isn't fair." Hiccup fought.
"Let them believe what they wish." Toothless said.
"But-"
"No buts. If they wish to believe you've tamed me then let them. It'll be easier that way. They just also have to remember that I'm an alpha here and I got that position the same way as anyone else."
"How is it that you can kill a monster and then be called one yourself?" Hiccup took Toothless' head in his hands. "Doesn't matter to me I suppose. He's my monster." Hiccup kissed the dragon's snout. He let go and turned back to the Rumblehorn. "We're gonna be in here banging around for a while so feel free to head out for tonight. Go see Skullcrusher. I'm sure he'd love a visit from you."
"That obvious?"
"So obvious even the other humans noticed. And it's not like we didn't notice him coming down here every night."
"We're, uh, just seeing if, you know." Plates stammered.
"I understand, now go." Hiccup ordered. The large female got and made her way out a bit before raising her wings and flying off. Hiccup listened intently to her movements. Checking just how well Gobber did to isolate the armor plates from one another. He noticed a bit of clanking still but not even close to his prototype design.
