Jessica Holmes, 16 years old, from Houston, Texas, loves comic books, anime, and videogames, will eat any and every snack, luckily for her, this form of hers burns so many calories that she can afford to consume over 15000 calories a day and still lose weight.
Jazz glanced over at Orpheus, who was currently looking at three teens. In case you were wondering, yes, I'm talking to you, it's part of my magic. Just think about your responses, I'll hear them.
Jazz thought that this was a convenient power and that Orpheus seemed to have a ton of bullshit powers that was supposedly the 'same' magic.
No one likes a smart-ass Jazz, and yes, my magic and the magic system of the world I inhabited was as limiting as it was versatile. Anyways, the girl, Jessica, she's the one who calls herself Hellspot, she's got a crazy temper, and a lot of danger about her, she's the second one I'm most worried about.
"Only the second?" Jazz gulped audibly, causing the girl who hovered in the air over them to turn to look at him.
"Hmmm… what to do." Hellspot placed a finger on her lower lip, then winked at Jazz. He frowned at her action, "aww, that used to fluster you only a little bit ago."
"You psychopaths murdered my family, do you think I'd fall for you or something?" Jazz's eyes began to gleam blue as his ki swirled around him.
"Woah… are you sure you can't go Super Saiyan?" Hellspot observed the red-head. She glanced at Orpheus. "And you, how come you haven't said a thing, why don't you use your magic?" She asked, smiling gently.
Orpheus didn't answer her. Hellspot's abilities are versatile, she inherited and stole magic from Azarantheans, Atlanteans, Amazons, and even from Zatanna. He mentally signaled to Jazz. The magic rules of her world are different from mine, so it's hard to defend against it, requiring an all-encompassing ward, she probably layered herself with enough hexes, curses, and spells to exhaust me several times over, I'll have to investigate her magic a bit to break it and cast a spell successfully. If you'd be so kind to distract her…
'If I could even do that,' Jazz thought nervously, 'what's to stop her magic from turning me into paste?'
'Other than the fact you seem to contain an insane healing factor, you have your own internal magic system which works passively to protect you from magic, I noticed it when we first met, you have a greater amount of 'raw magical power' if you will, but it is much rougher than mine, which makes sense given all the wacky stuff you can do with it. Though I feel a bit upset, the 'water-into-hydrogen-and-oxygen' trick was my creative thing, I thought, to think a fellow science nerd co- They were interrupted by Hellspot landing.
"We checked the files, you might be tan and slightly broad-nosed, but we should have realized you weren't Tyrone, even if he was a bit lighter than you." She smiled, "but you must be reasonably strong, the fact you returned means that you made it to the end, presumably, right? I always wanted to test myself against your kind of guys."
"My kind?" Jazz asked.
"You know, the physically imposing bruisers with insane physical power and destructive energy production, people who evoke the same sense of grandeur and scale-like Superman, you know, your Shazam, Hyperion, Sentry, Goku is the first thing that comes to mind if you think of such a being in Japan, what with all the powers he and others have in that series, as inconsistent as it can seem at times." She grinned, "anyways, I wanna see what you can do, if you can entertain me, I'll do two things for you, and if you can't, I'll kill you."
"What could you possibly do for me…" Jazz asked angrily.
"I can reveal the guy who was sent to eliminate your family, that loser over there must be feeling a little confused right now, huh…"
Jazz turned to see Orpheus bleeding from the eyes.
Hellspot continued, "I don't like it when people pry into my mind, and that was for putting me to sleep. Before Jazz could say a thing, she speared the black teen in the chest and shot of lasers from her eyes. He activated his silver aura and full power mode, charging into her. She was pushed away slightly, causing her to let go of Orpheus, who slowly disintegrated into a black, smoking ash.
"What the hell!" Jazz growled as ki formed in his fingers, Hellspot widened her eyes in interest as he wrote the hanzi for 'shield, king, power, and love'. "Interesting." She said in perfect Cantonese, "You know pinyin?"
Jazz didn't reply as he blitzed forward, the ground cracked underneath him as the sound barrier shattered in his fury. He extended a claw forward, slashing toward Hellspot's neck. The girl moved an arm to block the strike, causing a massive shock wave that blew away the dust and debris immediately surrounding them.
"Wow…" Jessica's eyes curved like sideways crescent moons as her cheeks turned slightly pink, Jazz's arm trembled with the exertion of the physical blow. "Is that really the best y-"
"Just shut the fuck up." Jazz replied as he disappeared into a cloud of smoke, before reappearing 200 feet away. Before he could make more distance, she appeared next to him. He attempted to move, but the shockwaves caused by her speed ignited the air around them, knocking him back with the heat and shattered sound barrier. His body exploded in a plume of white smoke, replacing Jazz with a completely red-looking version of himself. Hellspot drove her fist into his chest, but instead of piercing it, she watched as his chest caved in. The sound of air leaving a popped beach ball filled the air as Jazz was sent hurtling into the ground, she watched with bemusement when instead of cracking the ground on impact, Jazz rapidly spun and bounced up, he transformed again, this time into a titanium creature with sharp claws. Hellspot caught his arm, shattering it, she then hissed as his fingernails raked over her skin, tearing into it.
"...What the hell?!" She growled, "my skin is tougher than an Atlantean's and an Amazonian's just as its base, then it's further improved by the insane power boost of a Kryptonian, how the hell did you cut me, in fact, what the hell is with these transformations?! That's not part of dragon ball!"
Jazz cocked his head, "you've never heard of this?" He smirked, before transforming. Hellspot's eyes widened in shock as she saw a perfect replica of herself in front of her.
"What the hell is this sorcery?!" She asked angrily.
The first thing Jazz felt was two slight weights on his chest and an uncomfortable shift in his organ and skeletal structure, he ignored those, then the next thing he felt was an uncomfortable swirling of magic, whispering in his mind. The most important thing he felt was a steady wealth of strength that was beginning to rise. He charged forward, green energy forming in his hand. He smashed his fist into Hellspot's, and watched as the girl blocked the attack, shock in her eyes. "Having an issue?" He asked, his voice matching Hellspot's perfectly.
"I don't sound like that!" She shouted angrily, swinging her fist in order to decapitate Jazz. Jazz ducked under the blow with renewed reflexes then kicked her away with a ki-empowered donkey kick. Both he and the original Hellspot screamed. Hellspot screamed as she felt her lower ribs crack slightly, and Jazz screamed as black flames erupting from Hellspot began to surround him. He lost concentration as the transformation broke. Using his phoenix flames, he was able to subdue the fires, which originated from a Hex.
"...Damn." He growled.
"You're… you're not from Dragon Ball…" Hellspot growled, "who the hell are you? How many worlds did you visit?!" She prepared to charge forward, only to scream in pain as a palm-sized explosion sent her flying. The force of the wind caused by the mini-explosion sent Jazz flying as well in the opposite direction, he landed on the ground, hard, heaving, and gasping as his body slowly healed. A hand touched his shoulder, and he turned in shock to see a red-eyed, red-haired black teen.
"Orpheus?" He asked, a bit confused. "Didn't you…" he trailed off.
"Orpheus smirked, "as long as I have magic, my body eventually reforms, in fact, sort of like saiyans, I come back a wee bit stronger, but not by much, luckily though, I've been 'disembodied' quite a few times." He chuckled, "anyways…" he waved his hand, several quartz crystals appeared around him, and Jazz began to feel his stamina slowly restore, but only by a small amount. "You've got some more tricks up the sleeve, right? I can take over for a bit while you prepare, but I won't last much more than a few seconds, and now that she's seen this…" he referred to his current form, "she'll know how to kill me."
"Buy me… 5 seconds." Jazz responded.
"You're giving me way too much credit." Orpheus laughed. Hellspot landed in front of them, her hair was singed and she had spittle in her mouth, her eyes were slightly bloodshot from the tension and one of her pupils was dilated. "Did that hurt, Jessie?" Orpheus said in a sing-song voice, he ignored the pain as his eyes began to bleed from Hellspot's magical retaliation.
"How dare you say that name!"
Hellspot charged forward, she was halted by an invisible force that seemed to clamp down on her entire body. She watched as Orpheus collapsed to the ground, his hair and eyes returning to their natural black colors, then watched as the trees, other plants, and a few animals still in the area withered away and died. At the same time, white fog emerged from Jazz, as he disappeared before her eyes. She screamed in frustration, then fired a laser beam from her eyes, attempting to pierce Orpheus's heart. Unfortunately for her, as if by superhuman reflex, Orpheus's body crumpled slightly, forcing his head to meet her blast, he exploded into a dark smoke that dissipated, causing the girl to curse in annoyance. She turned her attention to the fog, and began to fire star bolt after star bolt, at the same time, she began to chant Atlantean magic, magic passed down from the Homo Magi, then, the Kryptonian laser beams shot from her eyes as she attempted to annihilate the enemy likely hiding behind the mist. After a few seconds, she charged forward, blowing the rest of the mist away and revealing the tattered remains of Jazz's shirt. She grinned, "he's dead then."
A lance made of Tungsten and empowered by ki stabbed into her back. She screamed in pain, turning and breaking off the weapon, only to see Jazz, wearing an odd sleeveless Jacket with poofy shoulder pads dodge her counter attack and move his palm to her open wound.
"WABOWABOBOBO!" He screamed as he injected ki, magic fire, and electricity into her exposed wound. Hellspot screamed in pain as the cocktail of power coursed through her body, it was a painful internal burning sensation she couldn't get rid of.
"Get off of me!" She screamed in pain, swinging her fist wildly to break Jazz off, only to wince as he blocked the blow with another tungsten lance with a ki-empowered needle tip. "AAAAAAAGH!" She screamed in pain as Jazz poured his power into her from another entry point.
"I didn't forget what you said." Jazz said, "you might potentially be stronger than Superman." he said, "but he isn't completely invulnerable, most Kryptonians in most canon stories lack the same durability against magic."
"But that's where my wards come in…" Hellspot grimaced in pain, driven to her knees. The ground shook around them from the pressure of Jazz's energy.
"Orpheus took care of that for me." Jazz said, "he risked his life once more to fully delve into your mind and discover how exactly your magical wards worked, then I assume he either matched his magic's wavelengths to yours or found a way to bypass your magic entirely."
"But… the magic of the Inheritance Cycle, he shouldn't have that much power…" She gasped.
Jazz smiled at that. "Oh?" He grinned, "that's what the series is called? Well, I gave him quite a bit of my ki, which he seemed to be able to convert quite easily, in the world of Dragon Ball, only a tiny bit of energy in comparison to ki is capable of doing some amazingly massive things, you remember, Babadi could survive Vegeta's final explosion with his shielding magic, didn't he?" Jazz chuckled, "besides," a third arm sprouted from his back, sporting another needle, which pierced Hellspot's neck. Her eyes widened in true fear at that moment, and she began to tremble. "Didn't you read dragon ball? All sorts of fantastical creatures exist in that world, there are so many things that happen in the background that you might not notice if you aren't careful. His eyes began to gleam blue again as he drove more energy into her, her body began to bubble and boil, then melt before his eyes.
"Wait!" She screamed as she began to die, "I know who killed your family, don't-" She was reduced to a skeleton before she could continue.
"I don't give a damn about whatever information you may contain." Jazz said as her skeleton collapsed into pieces. He stepped on the bones, and to his annoyance noticed that they seemed attached at the joints, despite everything he did, he couldn't break them.
"Her skeletal system is indestructible unless hit with a level of power akin to that of an old or new god, like superman, she'll eventually regenerate, but we can slow that down." Orpheus appeared at Jazz's side once more, a pile of dirt was pulled away and the skeleton buried in it.
"Why…"
"Why only do that?" Orpheus replied to Jazz's question before he could finish. "Because their leader could find her, quite easily, and I don't want to deal with his bullshit, not right now. He's way stronger than she is, and it was only her arrogance that gave you this lucky shot."
"Is… everyone of those bastards some form of immortal?" Jazz sighed.
"Sorry, bud, 'fraid so…" Orpheus walked over to Jazz, "and you don't look like you're in any shape to go and try and clean house."
"No, I'm not, in fact, I don't know if I'm going to live." Jazz could already feel his ki fluctuating as it threatened to blow up his limbs.
"Do you mind if I try something?" Orpheus asked.
"Wha…" Before Jazz could answer, he felt the energy go away. He widened his eyes in shock as his damaged body began to repair itself. "What?!" He turned to look at Orpheus, who had a grin on his face.
"Had a friend with a similar problem." He said, "Too much energy, luckily, ki is life energy, so I can convert your life energy into magical energy that I can then store into this little guy." He held a palm-sized diamond.
"I don't know what the Inheritance Cycle is…" Jazz began, "but it sounds fun if you can do all that bullshit you pulled just now."
"I mean, sure." Orpheus had a big grin on his face, "but it requires insane reserves of energy, so… y'know, thank you very much, with this much energy I could teleport the entire planet of Earth, or stop its spin for 15 seconds. Just for the scale of power, of course, I wouldn't actually destroy the Earth or anything."
Jazz looked down, "I'm…glad things worked out for you."
Orpheus shook his head, "I'm sorry you lost your home, but…" he began, "I look forward to seeing you again hopefully, I'll leave a spot for you."
"You'll what?" Jazz asked.
"I and you can't be the only ones smart or lucky or strong enough to survive being the sacrificial lambs, others will come, and I'll be here to help them out when that happens." Orpheus said, "and… you and I both know you came here to visit."
"I wish you'd stop reading my mind, it's fucking annoying." Jazz snapped.
"I'd rather not pry, but you have to realize that we are both very capable of killing each other at any moment under the right circumstances, you could annihilate the entire planet, and I can't breathe in space, and that's assuming my wards could even survive the explosion you'd unleash doing something that fucked up. I can't in good conscience pretend I trust you, and I don't want you to believe you can easily trust me either, just because we were the sacrifices for Jeremy's sick experiments doesn't mean we're good people."
Jazz turned to the ruins of his town, further destroyed by their battle, and felt even more exhausted. His body began to set on fire, but it did not harm him, and he felt a gentle tug that grew more and more powerful.
"It looks like you're going back." Orpheus began, "I wish you good luck, and…" he tapped Jazz's forehead, causing the redhead to flinch in slight pain. "A parting gift. Goodbye Jasper Duncan, from one survivor to another."
…
The shock of returning, and of the events he experienced did not immediately hit Jazz. He remembered hazily that Annin had rushed to his side, healing the few wounds that remained. He remembered Dealla and Yamcha rushing him back to PaoPao's compound, he remembered being placed on a hospital bed, and he half understood that he was staring at the white rectangular ceiling lights one would normally see in a hospital or school, yet Jazz wasn't aware of where or who he was at the moment. He still felt as if his mind was in a haze. At some point, he finally began to remember. He remembered the sunset seen from inside the hospital room, for some reason, the one here, it was brighter than… than Earth. He shot up from the bed, memories of his home, of the ruins, of the fact that he was alone there, that he had no one anymore. He was truly, truly alone. His mind couldn't handle it as he released a heart-wrenching scream.
His friends ran into the room too late, gasping as they witnessed the open window.
Jazz flew as fast as he could through the air, he felt that his power had increased, but he didn't care, he wasn't feeling hatred, or fear, or sadness, he was feeling empty. It was as if a knot was all over his body but he couldn't remove them. He clenched and unclenched his fists and teeth as memories of his family flashed through his mind. He didn't know when he reached the Furnace of Eight Division's entrance, but he felt his mind clear as he looked at Annin, who watched him, a sad smile on her face.
"What where they like?" She asked, suddenly hugging Jazz.
Jazz felt like complaining, he felt anger, thinking that someone else was able to read his mind, or his heart, but the anger quickly dissipated as he felt the love from Annin, love that he knew was directed to the spirit of her son within him, but love that was still aimed to him as well, all the same.
Tears that hadn't been able to fall dripped as Jazz began to speak of his family. He began slow.
"My brother was a wreck, he stayed in his room all day, he'd grunt when we talked to him, he'd just play video games or sleep. But at night, he'd do the chores, so quietly that no one could hear him, he was scared, scared that we resented him, or that I didn't look up to him, so he didn't want to face us. My mom was a mess, she was always busy working, but she loved us, she couldn't be there all the time, so I told her to try and focus on my brother, but neither of us could get to him, not until recently. Things had been… difficult after my dad died, but it was getting better." The tears dripped with greater intensity. "They were getting better, then… then I was sent here, and they're dead, they're gone, the last thing I did was lie to my mom, I was hanging out and playing hooky, I lied to her, and that… that… THAT BASTARD, TROY!" Jazz's hatred radiated from his body, as his grief was equated with hatred. "He took me away from my family, all to enjoy power?! I thought… I thought we were friends…" His mind flashed to the jar, to the brown-haired saiyan he sealed away. He began to contemplate using the dragon balls to restore that bastard's mortality then…"
"Jazz…" Annin began.
"Why?" Jazz hissed as he looked at her, "why should I spare him? He gave up everything, he had a family too, didn't he?! He took mine away, sacrificed his own, and had mine taken away, they had nothing, they posed no threat, yet… yet he didn't care, he wanted to kill Goku, he wanted to kill me, and… he could escape, he doesn't… he doesn't deserve to keep on existing, even eternal torment is too good for him, Annin-sama…" He scrunched his face. "I can't allow him… he…"
"Jazz, what would your father say?"
Jazz felt his temper rise, but he couldn't bring himself to scream at the goddess, "he… he would tell me, the law exists to punish people, but sometimes people do things that are either too great, or too petty to be punished by the law when that happened, we can't just use our personal emotions to judge them, we… we have to remain rational, kind, empathetic, sometimes that means those people have to be stopped permanently, but we can't use our emotions to judge them… lest we one day regret our decision. Sometimes, we'll still regret what we had to do, but it's better to regret, even knowing you did the right thing than regret giving in to your base emotions…"
"What does your heart tell you?" Annin asked.
"I want him to suffer, I want him to die, I want him to lose everything he ever had, I want him to lose it all, then gain it back, only to lose it again, twice as painfully, I want him to hate me as much as I hate him, and I want him to die knowing he can never get back at me." His aura exploded, hatred radiating off of him. "But… I would be left empty, I know myself, I'm too weak… too naive, I'd grow to resent my hatred, resent those actions, and I couldn't ever…I wouldn't ever forgive myself, even if it was that bastard Troy."
Annin nodded, "I wouldn't stop you Jazz, if it was your desire to kill him and you would be okay with it, I wouldn't stop you, but… just as you said, you would be crushed by your own hatred."
Jazz only grit his teeth in response before muttering, "why am I so weak…? I… I hate Troy, but he was my friend, I loved him like a brother, I can't just let go of those emotions, even those Namekians I killed, their faces, their mannerisms, they haunt my dreams, and they were simply pure evil. Just because I know Troy has no hope for salvation because like me? If he dies that's it?"
"It's not weak to value life," Annin said, "it's not weak to feel remorse for any life taken, it's only weak when you deny your responsibility, do you deny your responsibility?"
Jazz shook his head fiercely, "If I didn't fight them, more people would have died, children would have died, my friends would have died… the girl… the girl I like, she would have died."
"Are you alone Jazz?" Annin asked.
Jazz didn't answer straight away. "Yamcha's self-serious, but he has a goofy side, Krillin is all goofball, but he puts on a brave face when ready, Chi-Chi uses her love for Goku to improve herself, and she is one of the kindest girls I ever met. Launch slowly combined her personalities, but both are so surprisingly precious that they want each other to still exist and experience the world. Tien holds an arrogant air around him, but he cares about his new friends, and is a dedicated, hard worker, and despite himself he's gained feelings for Launch. Goku, Goku is a brave guy, he's strong, despite not being human, he's a real guy, he has trouble connecting to others emotionally, but he's gotten better, he's gotten stronger emotionally, and even though he still has issues, he cares about us, I'm his friend. It's like meeting a hero, and realizing they're a person with flaws, but also a pretty good guy, that you can hang out with. Bulma is arrogant, and a jerk, and half the time I'd think she'd sell my organs to save her life, but she's smart, witty, funny, kind, and willing and ready to help whenever it's in her power. Oolong is a pervert, but he'll risk his life when it counts, Puar seems to revolve around Yamcha, but he always improves. Roshi makes Oolong look like a saint, but he's a strong, good master, and cares for his students, he'd die for them if need be. PaoPao, she's so self-serious, she has so much to worry about, but she takes the time to look my way. I notice when she looks away, embarrassed if she doesn't have any makeup on, or if her hair isn't done right, but when I look at her, she's the prettiest girl I've ever seen, at any and all times. I'm not alone, and… I lost my original family, but… I won't lose this family." His eyes hardened with determination. "This is my second home, and they are my people, I love them…"
Annin smiled. "I see, will you be alright then?"
Jazz nodded, "I… I will."
"That's good." Annin said, "because they were beginning to worry."
Jazz's eyes snapped over to his friends, who smiled nervously at him.
"Hey, Jazz…" PaoPao said… blushing fiercely, "umm… your ears…"
Jazz subconsciously felt for his ears, "what the fuck…"
