[A/N] Before reading the chapter, please keep in mind that the intention is to end up with Calzona, I swear!
Chapter 2
Arizona could hardly believe her eyes. The woman that had been on her mind quite recently and rather consistently was here.
Her ex-wife.
And apparently, the girlfriend of one Henry Campbell.
Arizona continued to look towards the entrance of the waiting area as Callie and Henry were intercepted by an older couple to chat. She took the opportunity to observe them.
They make a ridiculously striking couple, Arizona thought. While Henry looked really dapper in a black tux, Callie was a sight to behold in her gown. In fact, Arizona noticed other people doing a double-take on the Latina when they pass her by. She was wearing a fully-beaded gold gown, with beaded drapes embellishments. It was sleeveless with a modest square neckline and a high slit. Arizona had never seen Callie this dressed up, and with an obviously expensive gown too. The color of the gown complemented her caramel skin, and her hair and make-up was immaculately done.
Finally, Callie turned her face in the direction of the GSMH surgeons.
Time seemed to stop for Arizona as she and Callie locked eyes for the first time in more than a year. Her heart was pounding heavily that she was momentarily concerned she might hyperventilate. To her utmost surprise, Callie's polite demeanor did not falter as the couple made their way towards the group of surgeons. However, before they could take more than five steps, event attendants started ushering people to the banquet hall. Henry and Callie turned to follow the attendant that approached them, and Arizona and the rest of the surgeons did the same.
Guests were shown to their assigned seats by ushers, but most stood back up to mingle or proceed to the impressive open bar on one side of the banquet hall while the night's program had not yet started. Catherine suggested (read as: ordered) that it was the perfect time for the doctors to network. She proceeded to point out, discreetly of course, the right people to talk to. Derek, Meredith and Jackson grouped together, while the rest went with Catherine.
Arizona was seriously glad that she was adept in multitasking, as she was rather distracted from their group's conversation with a potential donor because she was observing her ex-wife. She still could not believe that Callie was here. She wondered if her gut instinctively knew that she would see the Latina tonight, and that was why she felt so off-kilter since she woke up this morning.
Henry was introducing Callie to several people, and Arizona noted that she appeared to be the epitome of poise and sophistication – her smile polite, her movements gracious. Even her laugh was different; gone was the hearty laugh that Arizona so liked to hear from her; it was now changed to a soft laughter. She had known Callie to be naturally vivacious, but as she had further observed, the Latina seemed to have toned down that particular part of her personality.
Arizona reasoned that maybe that was just because she was being introduced to new people. Well, she would soon find out if her assumption was correct as Henry and Callie seemed to be walking over to them.
"Hello again, Doctors. I was made aware that you know my girlfriend, Dr. Callie Torres," said Henry to Catherine, Miranda, Cristina and Arizona.
Catherine was the first one to speak, "Oh, yes. Hello, Dr. Torres. How have you been?"
"I am doing well, thanks for asking."
It was a bit disconcerting for Arizona to see Callie being so formal and just smiling politely instead of warmly as was customary for her – more so that this was towards former friends and colleagues.
Arizona thought, Callie has always been generous with her smile, the one so big you think you might get blinded by it. But it's not the smile she has on right now. And those eyes… I recall calling it magical to that woman when we were in the elevator. Those eyes were always full of life. Now they carried only a sliver of the warmth it used to exude.
Henry smiled and amiably said, "I think our introductions were interrupted earlier by Callie's arrival, Aunt Catherine."
"Oh, of course. Henry, these are some of the finest surgeons you would ever meet," Catherine replied. "This is Dr. Cristina Yang, cardiothoracic."
"Oh, you're Callie's ex-roommate! She has spoken so fondly of your days living together and insists that you are the next Harper Avery Award winner," Henry genially stated, offering his hand to Cristina.
Cristina shook Henry's hand and sent an appreciative look towards Callie, "Thank you! Well, I hope Callie's confidence in me is rewarded by that coming true." Callie smiled, albeit close-mouthed.
Catherine continued on with the introductions, "Dr. Miranda Bailey, general."
"Pleasure to meet you, Dr. Bailey. Callie told me you were batch mates in your residency years, and that you would probably be Chief of Surgery in the future," Henry said as he shook Miranda's hand.
"I'm quite flattered, but is that really all Torres said?" Miranda shrewdly asked.
Henry laughed, "Well she also said that if there was one person in the hospital she did not want to cross – that would be you. When I asked her to elaborate, she just said 'because she's BAILEY'."
"Good answer. But that won't help her case when she explains why she didn't keep in touch," Miranda playfully glared at Callie.
Callie withered under Miranda's glare even when made in jest, "I'll keep in touch from now on, Bailey."
"Oh, no. You're not getting away that easily! You better visit me in Seattle and catch up over dinner. On your dime!" Miranda demanded.
Callie relented, "Okay, I'll let you know when I go to Seattle."
"Hey! If you are meeting Bailey, you should meet me too. You owe me lots of tequila!" Cristina said.
"Uh, okay. Maybe we can set something up," Callie acquiesced. There was considerable reservation in her tone when addressing both Cristina and Miranda. Arizona wondered what that was about. She could understand the Latina being distant to Catherine and her, but to Miranda and Cristina? That just didn't seem like Callie at all. At least the Callie that she knew.
Catherine finally turned towards Arizona. "This is Dr. Arizona Robbins, peds and maternal/fetal surgeon."
Henry reached for Arizona's hand to shake and said, "Glad to meet you, Dr. Robbins." There was no faulting this man's manners.
Before Arizona could stop herself, her lips had already spoken. "And what did Callie say about me?"
"Well, Callie said that any child would be lucky to have you as their doctor, and that she believes your 'super magic smile' actually helps the kids heal faster," Henry said with a grin, not missing a beat.
Arizona was astonished. She didn't expect Callie to share such wonderful words about her, especially after how their marriage ended. She looked at Callie and softly said, "Thank you." Her ex-wife just nodded her head in acknowledgment.
"Jackson's on the other side of the room with two more of our surgeons - Drs. Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, general and neuro," Catherine said.
"We'll make sure to say hi to them before the night ends," Henry said. "If you would excuse us, Aunt Catherine, Doctors. I see some friends I know over there that I would like to introduce Callie to. It's my chance to tell them to stop ogling my girlfriend because I already jumped the line."
Callie nudged Henry in the ribs, "Stop that, no one's ogling me and there's no line." Arizona mentally disagreed. She had noticed those men a little while ago too. And honestly? She couldn't blame them.
"Babe, sometimes I wonder how many men and women's hearts you've unintentionally broken because you didn't realize they were interested. Oh well, all the better for me!" Henry smugly stated.
"If they're really looking, they're probably just wondering how you ended up with someone like me instead of the Victoria's Secret model you were rumored to be dating some months ago," Callie deadpanned.
Both Henry and Arizona frowned at that. Henry said, "Someone like you? You mean someone intelligent and has the purest of hearts, all wrapped up in a remarkably beautiful and hot package? Then yeah, they must be wondering how I got damn lucky."
He took Callie's hand and intertwined it with his, "Come on, I'd really like to introduce you to my friends. Bet you I am correct they were ogling. Then I'll spend the whole night showing you off to everyone I know, so you'd believe me when I say I am the luckiest guy here."
Callie still looked unconvinced, "Whatever you say, babe." Addressing her former colleagues, "It was nice seeing you. Excuse us, please."
Henry guided Callie to a group of men with his hand on the small of her back. Arizona tuned out whatever her peers were chatting about and watched her ex-wife. She was now being introduced by Henry to three men around their age. One of those men took Callie's offered hand for a handshake and lifted it up for a kiss. Arizona couldn't decipher what Henry said to the man as the group all laughed, with Callie blushing furiously. Where's a brick when you need one, came unbidden to Arizona's mind. What the - Just where did that thought come from?
#####
The event started off with the usual boring corporate speeches and back-patting, and no matter how hard Arizona tried, her mind kept on going to the Latina. She didn't quite understand her own motivation, but she chose a seat that had a direct line of sight to her ex-wife who was seated with Henry at a table near the stage, while the GSMH doctors were seated just a row behind them, two tables to the left.
Breathtakingly stunning. These were words she hadn't attributed to Callie for quite some time, not since her amputation. Her mind knew it to be true, but she realized that she hadn't really "seen" her ex-wife during the year after the plane crash. It was a jarring realization to have.
Callie seemed to have lost quite a bit of weight too. Not that it mattered, she had always been beautiful. It was just something that was noticeably different from the last time they were together. Did she start losing weight because of how hard things became?
Unexpectedly seeing the brunette after a long year had thrown her into a loop. Just as she had told her therapist, she still had some lingering ill feelings towards Callie. But at this moment? None of that mattered. She was just glad to see Callie again.
#####
After dinner was consumed, party guests started getting up from their seats to go to the dancefloor, take advantage of the open bar or mill around to chat. Arizona still hadn't taken her eyes off Callie and Henry, even as she conversed with her tablemates. If you asked her, she probably wouldn't be able to tell you what the group was talking about as she was mainly focused on observing her ex-wife.
Henry and Callie mingled with several people and danced for a couple of songs. Arizona saw Callie say something to Henry, and the two went in different directions. With only a small bit of hesitation, Arizona surreptitiously followed her ex-wife. She found Callie outside by the gardens.
"Callie…" It was the only thing Arizona thought to say at the moment. She didn't even understand why she felt the need to approach Callie.
The brunette whirled around with surprise evident on her face, "Oh, hey Arizona." She didn't expect anyone to be in the gardens with her; she just needed some fresh air to cool off.
Callie waited for Arizona to say anything, but it didn't look like her ex-wife was going to talk anytime soon so she continued. "Look, I apologize for being here. I didn't know that the Grey-Sloan Board was invited. Otherwise, I would've made my excuses not to attend. I'm sorry."
Now it was Arizona's turn to be surprised, "Wait, what? Why are you apologizing for being here?"
"Umm. Well, in my letter to you I said I wouldn't bother you again, that I would keep away."
"Oh." She paused for a moment before continuing, "Wait, you mean you weren't ever planning to go back to Grey Sloan?" Oddly, this thought never crossed Arizona's mind. Did Callie mention it in her letter?
"I planned never to go back to Seattle at all," Callie earnestly said.
Arizona was stunned. Is this how much Callie hates my guts that she doesn't even want to come back to the place she called home for so many years, just to avoid me? Or is this about something else? "Callie, that's absurd. You don't have to do that. You don't have to stay away from the hospital or from Seattle. I don't mind."
"Really?" Callie was obviously skeptical.
"Yes, of course."
The brunette let out an audible sigh, "Okay, if you are sure that you don't care I'm in your vicinity, I'll take your word for it."
Arizona merely nodded before saying, "How – how have you been? Where did you go?"
"I went to Miami first then went to a couple of places." Callie paused for a bit before continuing with a genuine smile, "Congratulations by the way on your new specialty."
Arizona felt her heart jump when she noticed the difference in her ex-wife's smile. There was a bit more warmth and sincerity in her smile than she had been showing earlier in the night. "Thank you, Callie." She hesitated for a bit before asking, "Does Henry know?"
"Know what?" Callie asked confused. "You mean, that we were married?"
Arizona nodded.
"Yes, he knows," Callie said simply.
"Have you – have you been together long?"
Callie looked at Arizona as if gauging her motivation for these questions. She was leery, but she figured Arizona was just making small talk, so she responded in earnest, "Not that long. Just a few months."
There was a stretch of silence as neither woman knew what to say to each other after that. It had been too long since they last talked. And really, what was there for them to talk about anyway?
Callie was the one to finally break the silence, "Uh, I'll head back inside." Before she even started to turn around and walk away, she heard Arizona.
"Callie," Arizona said. She could not let the Latina go without saying anything further.
"Hmm?"
"It's really good to see you," Arizona said, trying to convey as much sincerity as she could in those few words. Because she was happy to see her ex-wife, no matter how much she still could not understand all that she was feeling towards her.
Callie looked momentarily stunned as if she couldn't believe what Arizona was saying before regaining composure, "Sure, Arizona. It's good to see you too."
Arizona waited for a minute or two to compose herself before going back inside. What is happening? Why am I reacting like this to Callie's presence? I haven't thought about her for the better part of a year. Being away from her let me heal. I moved on and moved forward. Why am I suddenly feeling so many things all at once that I can't even name all of the emotions stirring inside me? I really need to talk to Dr. Wyatt soon.
#####
Arizona saw Derek intercept Callie as she was walking towards the bar. She saw him lead the Latina back to the GSMH table, probably under orders from Meredith, with a side of bullying from Miranda and Cristina. Just as Arizona was nearing their table, Jackson approached her alongside an older lady who was one of the potential donors that Catherine pointed out earlier. In her peripheral vision, she saw Henry approaching Callie. She was near enough to hear most of the conversation.
Henry came over and said to Callie, "Hey. I requested the band to play a couple of songs for us. May I have the honor to dance with my girlfriend again?" He offered his hand to Callie.
Callie took his hand and stood up, "And they agreed to modify their set list, just like that?"
"Well, the Campbell name rings a bell, you know." Then he grinned mischievously, "I also told them I wanted to try the songs out to see which one could be our wedding dance. The band probably thought if we like their rendition, they could sing at our wedding reception."
"Henry!" Callie admonished.
"What?" Henry was trying hard to look innocent.
Meredith asked the question everyone else at the table was thinking, "You're getting married?"
"No, Henry was just joking," Callie responded. She then turned back to Henry and said, "You can't say that carelessly around other people. They might think it's true, and next thing we know our parents have already planned a wedding!"
Catherine sniggered, "She's right, you know. If word goes around that you're getting married, your mother would have the best wedding planner in town on the phone the next day, and would probably have your wedding planned in less than a month. I know your mom, soon after she'd start pestering you and Dr. Torres for grandbabies. And that's just from your side of the family. I imagine Dr. Torres's parents would also have something to say."
"Ah, saves us time for the wedding prep then, we could focus on the honeymoon portion instead," Henry jovially said, winking at Callie.
"Henry!" Callie was now blushing furiously, "Stop it with that nonsense!"
"Okay, okay!" Henry said, holding his hands up. "Anyway. M'lady, may I have this dance? You know the first two songs since they're in our playlist. But the third song, I chose it specifically for you."
"Be glad we're at a social event or I would have smacked that smug look off your face already."
"Ooohhhh feisty," Henry jibed as they started to walk away.
Arizona kept telling herself that Callie eventually marrying someone else was no longer her concern. And no, she didn't care. Right? Besides, hadn't she moved on with other lovers too? But no matter how much logic she injected in her internal monologue, some small part of her wanted to protest. Arizona wanted to bang her head on the table. These intrusive thoughts must stop!
#####
"They seem cozy," Derek said as the group of surgeons watched Callie and Henry walk away.
Meredith added, "They seem to be having fun with each other."
"Who knew someone as rich as that doesn't have a stick up his butt? No offense, Dr. Avery," Cristina said, not entirely apologetic.
"Hmm… None taken. They look great together," Catherine said.
Arizona sat down with the group after she and Jackson finished talking with the prospect donor who was really interested in pediatrics. She watched as Henry and Callie hovered near the dance floor until she saw the lead singer of the band nod his head to Henry, probably their signal that the next song would be the one he requested.
She watched Callie's reaction intently and saw her face light up as soon as the first few notes of the song played. La Vie En Rose. Hmm. She didn't know Callie liked songs like this.
"Did they choreograph this or are they both just really great dancers?" Meredith asked. I have to agree though. Henry and Callie seemed totally in sync in their movements, moving fluidly together.
Cristina added, "And how the heck can those two make this dance romantic and sultry at the same time?! It's ridiculous." She considered for a moment then added, "Oh, who am I kidding? It's Callie. I shouldn't be wondering, really." No disagreement will be coming from me, thought Arizona. It was Callie, after all; the Latina could make anything sexy.
Arizona belatedly realized that she wasn't the only one mesmerized by the dancing couple. It seemed that many eyes were upon them, but Henry and Callie only had eyes for each other.
#####
Callie and Henry were holding each other closely, Callie's head resting on Henry's shoulder. They were no longer actively dancing but just swaying together, enjoying the female vocalist of the band crooning to Can't Help Falling In Love. Henry specifically asked for this version, as he knew Callie really liked Hailey Reinhart's rendition of the song.
"I saw Dr. Robbins follow you outside," Henry broke the peaceful silence between them.
"She did. We talked a bit."
"And?"
"And? Nothing. I apologized for being around, she said she didn't mind. She asked if you knew we were married, I said yes. I congratulated her on her new specialty; she asked where I went after leaving Seattle. That's it."
Henry pulled Callie closer and asked, "Are you okay? And you have to be honest, Rule #1."
"I'm okay, babe. I was caught by surprise seeing her tonight. But maybe seeing her again is a good thing."
"What do you mean?"
Callie took a deep breath and lifted her head from Henry's shoulders before responding, "Lately when I catch my thoughts drifting to her, I don't feel that yearning anymore, not the way I used to. I don't feel like that sad, pathetic loser that left Seattle. Seeing her tonight proved to me that I may always have love in my heart for Arizona Robbins, I'm not sure that will ever go away, but I'm not in love with her anymore."
Henry stared at her intently, weighing the truthfulness of Callie's declaration. He couldn't find an ounce of falsehood or hesitancy. Callie was telling the truth, or at least she really believed that to be the truth. His heart was beating fast. "Do you remember Rule #2?"
"Of course, I was the one to suggest it – if feelings change, we must tell the other immediately." Callie had a puzzled look on her face, wondering what Henry was alluding to, "Henry?"
Henry took a deep breath, brushing some stray hair that fell on Callie's face. "I know we didn't start our relationship in the most conventional of ways, Callie. That's why we have our set of rules, right?"
Callie just nodded, urging Henry to continue.
"In adherence to Rule #2, I want you to know that I'm in love with you. We started this with both of us still carrying some hurt, but that's in the past. I don't want to be encumbered by the past anymore, Callie. I want to live my life in the here and now, and that's with you. You make me so happy. Every day you make me want to be a better man so I could deserve you."
Callie was stunned.
Henry paused, cupping Callie's face with both hands. "I love you."
"You do?"
"I do."
"I love you too."
And with that, Callie felt the cracks of her heart start to mend.
#####
Arizona was watching Callie and Henry intently. A year may have passed, and her ex-wife might have changed in more ways than one. But she could still read the emotions in Callie's eyes.
As she saw Callie look up at Henry with her eyes sparkling like it never had throughout the night, that's when she knew.
Callie was in love.
The look in her eyes... It was the same look she was so used to seeing in Callie's face whenever the Latina looked at her, even when she was at her lowest after the amputation. It was the same way she was looking at Henry now.
And unbeknownst to Callie – just as her heart starts to put together its broken pieces, Arizona's heart shattered.
