The Worst Reincarnation Yet
Chapter 13: White Fang
Mountain Glen... Underground Ruins...
This derelict location previously served as a metropolitan transit system, facilitating the movement of people and resources from the kingdom of Vale to a recently acquired territory. The primary aim of this endeavor was to extend the boundaries of the realm and establish a foothold in the new region. The prospects for development in this settlement seemed boundless, as the surface had enough space to build a new city. Unfortunately, the military forces and the government failed to anticipate the creatures of Grimm's response to the invasion of their land, resulting in a swift and aggressive attack.
Vale's forces held out for a long time as they pushed the monsters back each time they charged, though their defenses were eventually overrun, the citizens evacuated to the underground tunnels and believed to be safe there. However, this only lasted for a short period of time until an explosion from an unknown origin opened the mouth of a large cave, unleashing a fresh onslaught of Grimm creatures that wrought havoc on the remaining inhabitants. Now, these ruins serve as a hiding spot for bandits, specifically the White Fang.
An old train covered with rust started to slow down and soon came to a stop in the middle of the destroyed settlement. "It's so dark out here, can hardly see a thing." A muscular guy wearing a white mask stepped off the train with a couple of soldiers trailing him, he flicked on his flashlight. "Okay! I don't spot any enemies nearby, Lave, picking up anything on the scanners?"
"No Lieutenant! They aren't picking up any sign of Grimm."
"Good! Let's hope it stays that way. Adam is expecting us to hold this location, we won't fail him." Said the man with a serious tone, turning around to reveal the White Fang symbol on his outfit. "Emeric! Round up your crew and make sure they guard the train. If things go to shit, this hunk of junk is our only ticket out of here." The soldier nodded and gestured for his boys to move. "Nell! With me!"
Other teams hopped off the train and rushed to secure the caves' entrances. Heavy guns were placed in key positions around the tunnel to tackle any big Grimm that might show up. The Lieutenant liked what he was seeing, his comrades knew what was at stake and so did he, they couldn't afford to let their guard down, not now. The elder approached one of the train's carriages and opened it, unveiling a significant number of Faunus spanning various ages, with many displaying signs of fear and injury. "Fear not, you have my word that we will keep you all safe, soon you will leave this hellhole for good."
The Faunus were still nervous, as they had suffered much in the last few weeks since they were captured to be used as slaves or playthings by Vale's nobility. Seventy-three... Seventy-three escaped a fate worse than death, these are the lucky ones that we managed to save, while many others are lost to us. The Lieutenant gritted his teeth behind the mask while clenching his hand into a fist, he was doing his best to control his rage. And the humans still wonder why we attack them, every last one of them shall pay in blood for this!
"Sir! Our teams have the entire area secured, we can proceed to get the civilians out of the train." Suddenly, gunfire was heard from a distance, catching the group's attention. "That seems to be coming from the north tunnels, I guess we have unwelcome guests."
"It appears so." When the elder turned he saw the horrified expressions of his people, they were in a panic and didn't know what to do, many began arguing among themselves. Amid the confusion he saw a little boy with a scar that spread across his face, his eyes seemed devoid of any life as if the child had given up. "Listen and listen well! There's no need to panic, the White Fang won't fail you!" With a firm resolve, he shut the door behind him and retrieved his sizable chainsaw, igniting its engine. "Lave round up more of our brothers and sisters, then meet me and Nell at the northern tunnels."
"Leave it to me!" He pounds his chest. "Try not to get your ass eaten, Nell."
"Pftt, they would spit me right out." The man chuckled.
After that, the Lieutenant quickly rushed toward the sound of combat. We won't fail, not again! I won't! When he got to the battlefield, there were loads of Beowolfs being held back by the Faunus' continuous fire, but it wasn't doing much as their weapons weren't very effective against the larger Beowolfs that had bone-like armor covering almost their entire bodies. "Brothers stand firm!" He dashed towards the dark beasts, revving his chainsaw until its blade burned red-hot, with a mighty swing, he decapitated a Beowolf with just a single strike.
As more creatures charged toward the masked warrior, his demeanor remained unwavering, fueled not by fear but by an unyielding determination. With a fierce and unmatched strength, he struck down the incoming Beowolf with such force that it split in two, even causing the ground to crack. "To me brothers! Push them back!" With a resolute swing of his weapon, he effortlessly sliced through another beast's armor as if it were mere paper. The creature collapsed to the ground, its cries of pain echoing across the cave. In its final moments, all it saw was a looming boot descending upon it before its skull was crushed beneath the warrior's boot.
"There are too many Grimm! We have to pull back and regroup!" Shouted a panicked soldier as he emptied his entire clip against a fully armored elder Ursa, which did no damage. "What the hell is that thing made of?!"
"Our weapons just aren't cutting against the older Grimm types!"
"Is there no end to them?!" Exclaimed Nell as the number of Grimm kept increasing. "We need to-..." He then spotted more White Fang members finally showing up to the fight. "Oh, look who decided to grace us with their presence! What the hell were you doing, Lave, taking the scenic route?!"
"Bite me! And hold your positions dammit!" Lave ordered the rest of his group.
The Lieutenant pierced the thick armor in the Beowolf's chest, revving his chainsaw to its maximum capacity, with a swift motion, he cleaved the creature's upper body in half. "Ahh... Ahh! Keep at it, White Fang!" Despite his growing fatigue, he urged his soldiers to persevere. Unexpectedly in that moment of distraction, a dark beast tackled him to the ground, causing him to lose his weapon. The elder Ursa bared its razor-sharp teeth and aimed for his head, he managed to save himself by grabbing the monster's mouth before it could harm him, though its teeth slashed his hands, leaving them bloodied. "Tough fucker aren't you?!"
Urrkkkk! I... I can't hold this bastard! The Ursa's large fangs kept inching closer, dripping droplets of blood-mixed saliva onto his mask. N-No... I... I refuse to die here! Not before I... I save more of my people! "Rahhhhhhh!" The leader's grip on the Grimm's jaw tightened fueled by his unwavering determination, as his muscles quivered under the strain. "There will be no dinner for you tonight! RAHHHHHHHH!" With a loud yell, he ripped the Ursa's jaw, leaving the beast writhing in agonizing torment for a brief moment before finally succumbing to its wounds and falling to the dirt.
"S-Shit! m-my body..." The Lieutenant stood up with some difficulty, but then quickly fell to his knees, as he was unable to stand on his own. Surveying the battlefield, he saw his soldiers putting up a good fight, but it was ultimately futile as nothing could change the outcome. E-Even now I am still weak... We are giving everything we have and yet... and yet we can't change anything. As he gazed ahead, a menacing Grimm approached with bared fangs. "COME ON THEN!"
Numerous blades swiftly flew past him, reducing the creature to pieces in seconds. The elder's eyes widened in astonishment, and suddenly a young girl with vibrant orange hair and piercing green eyes gracefully landed before him. "Salutations!" she said enthusiastically. "Allow us to handle this." With a swift gesture of her hands, her blades expertly dispatched a few more Beowolfs with ease, slashing them from multiple directions.
BAM!
BOOM!
Explosions were popping off left and right on the battlefield as a platoon of AK-130s blasted their high explosive rounds at the Grimm. In the midst of all those robots stood this mysterious person with white hair, and standing next to him was a petite woman with brown and pink hair. "Would you look at that? We made it just in time." The boy remarked. "Hey, Commander Vox! Waste these overgrown rats!" A wide smirk spread across his lips.
"Understood sir!" The leader of the AK units replied. "All squads form a firing line alongside the Faunus! Exterminate with extreme prejudice!" White Fang soldiers were extremely confused when they noticed multiple bots taking positions next to them though it didn't matter as it was critical to destroy what was left of the Grimm.
Thirty minutes later...
It was hard fought, but the battle at last was over. The White Fang gathered its wounded and moved them to a designated area where they could be treated, though many of them were in critical condition, if not properly treated they wouldn't make it out alive. Meanwhile, the Ak-130 units are actively sealing off tunnels to prevent any further dark creatures from ambushing them unexpectedly. Seeing all of this left the Lieutenant puzzled as a medical drone finished bandaging his hands. He couldn't help but wonder who these people were and what they were up to. These were the questions at the top of his mind.
"I apologize for bothering you, but from what your people told me, you are their leader, so I wish to have a word with you if possible." Said a short young man accompanied by the famous kingpin Roman Torchwick and a girl with emerald-green eyes. "Oh! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Whitley." He bowed in a show of respect.
The masked warrior approached the little stranger, and he instantly recognized him due to the boy's white hair and ice-like blue eyes, or to be more specific the family he belonged to. "A Schnee... just my lucky day." He towered over him, emanating quite a hostile aura. "I have been wanting to kill one of you for a long time."
"Haha... haaaaa..." This is starting well...
"Easy there big guy, the only reason you and your pack of mutts are still breathing is because of this Schnee, so be a good dog and say thanks." Said Roman mockingly.
"Say that again?!"
WHAAAAHHH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Whitley freaked out. "P-Please pay no mind to him." He spoke nervously. "W-We are not here to cause trouble, but to help. Actually, I was the one who arranged this meeting, though I was expecting to meet with Adam Taurus."
"Impossible! Our boss would never agree to a meeting with a fucking Schnee!" He snapped back, his tone filled with anger. "And what meeting?! There wasn't... hold on..." The Lieutenant was taken aback as he couldn't believe this. "Are you bastards the ones who will help my people get out of here?!"
Whitley nodded. "Indeed! I have provided your organization with several Bullhead airships to transport your people to a safe haven. They should be arriving in two hours, in fact." He handed his Scroll to the large man to check what he was saying was true. "We are here because I was promised, in exchange for those ships, I would be able to talk with your leader." And yet I haven't seen Adam anywhere.
"NO! We do not require your goddamn help!" I refuse to be helped by a Schnee!
"Pfftt! If we hadn't come here, your Faunus would have been dinner by now." Torchwick chuckled while puffing on his cigar.
"Please, we only seek to aid your people." Said Penny.
"I would rather die!"
It was no use, the Lieutenant was showing no intention of backing down, which was pissing off Whitley. "Fine then! Go die, but these Faunus will go back home, unlike you, I won't sacrifice them because of my own pride." He stood in front of the intimidating masked warrior staring right at him, Penny had never seen her friend like that before. "My drones are treating your soldiers and all of them will recover, they survived because of me, a fucking Schnee, not you asshole!"
"How dare... uhhh?!" His eyes widened as behind the white-haired boy there were many Faunus coming out from the main tunnel being escorted by AK-130s. "W-Who are they?"
Whitley glanced back. "Oh them? Those Faunus were the ones we rescued from a warehouse owned by a member of Vale's council." He replied. "Also the others you got on the train over there were also rescued by us, they had arrived in a cargo ship a few nights ago." Hearing this left the elder speechless, he then noticed the child with the scar from before hugging his parents, they had been saved by a Schnee. "You speak about saving your people, but all you do is wage a war that you will never win, meanwhile these poor bastards suffer without having anyone to protect them."
"..."
"... My... My sincere apologies." The man kneeled, leaving everyone shocked. He did everything I could not... this little weak human boy... no, this man saved a lot of lives, mine included. "I thank you for what you did."
"... I don't need your thanks." Whitley sighed. "As for the reason, well... I plan on rebuilding Mountain Glen and making it into a powerful settlement that can survive on its own, but for that to happen I need manpower." I can offer what the White Fang can't create on their own. He licked his lips. "Like you, I hate the Schnee household, I want to live my life freely, of course I can't as long I carry this name, so I need power and your friends can help me with that. In exchange, I plan to make Mountain Glen into an independent city that surpasses Kuo Kuana, here the Faunus can thrive."
"W-What?" The elder was surprised.
"Honestly, Kuo Kuana is a backwater settlement that is always under threat of Grimm and pirates. Oh! And let's not forget, they lack any meaningful military power, so if any kingdom wanted to annex that island, they could do it with ease."
The Lieutenant shook his head. "No, I already know that, I mean why do this for us? If you want manpower, you could just hire mercenaries, yet you decided to help the White Fang."
This was something Penny was curious herself. "Heh!" Whitley smirked. "Make no mistake, I am not doing this out of the kindness of my heart. I simply chose the White Fang because the moment my father learns I am supporting you guys, he will go ballistic." I can already imagine it, HAHAHA! The young man extended his hand. "Your people need a kingdom of their own, with my help the Faunus won't need to run anymore."
"... That's one hell of a crazy plan." He took the boy's hand, and Whitley then helped him back to his feet. "The name's Gray, you have my blade and my soldiers, if it's for my kind I will do anything." This was the start of something new. "When Adam arrives, I will have a word with him... you know for a human, you are not bad kid, but you are very weird." He went to join his soldiers.
Penny grinned. "Indeed he is."
"Absolutely." Roman chimed in.
"Ha! Ha! Very funny." Things went better than I expected, though meeting with Adam is making me anxious, I hope he won't try anything but if he does, I still have a card up my sleeve.
"Well this was fun and all, unfortunately, I still have work to do, so if you need me don't look for me." Torchwick waved heading off.
Now Whitley and Penny were alone. "You know, there's something I've been really curious about..." She walked around the young man with an inquisitive look. "What you said about helping the White Fang because you want to anger your father, I think that's a lie." Penny got close to his face, which made his cheeks turn red. "For some reason, you seem to lie about your real intentions for doing this."
Damn, this sexy robot girl! "Haha! I-I have no idea what you mean."
"I think you actually care about helping the Faunus otherwise, you wouldn't have gone to such lengths to save so many." She smiled warmly.
Whitley lowered his gaze. "I told you before, I am not a good person, all I do is to get what I want." Back on Earth, I had no one to rely on, I was shy and a good punching bag for bullies. A coward looking only after himself, living like a cockroach... Even here on Remnant, nothing has changed. "You are an amazing person, Penny, always willing to help those in need, willing to put your life on the line to protect your friends, but I am not strong like that, I'm not brave enough not when it counts."
Penny stared at him with a saddened expression. "Whitley... I..."
"I-I have to go, sorry." Coward! I'm always a fucking coward!
Penny saw her friend walk away looking downhearted. Whitley... I see you always helping everyone with a smile, but sometimes your eyes seem... to be in pain, and that… bothers me a lot. Putting a hand on her chest, she thought to herself. This feeling... I don't care how deep in the darkness you may be, I'll find my way to you, just you wait.
