Can't go back home because of what happened the night of the accident

Became a mermaid

Can't breathe air, or be out of the water for longer than 4 hours

Uses a small abandoned house just of the shore as a place to store things that can't go underwater, the house is in the most difficult to reach, or find place in La-Push
