Chapter 6: Free as a Qrow
"*Sigh*, I knew this was a bad idea." Qrow sighed as he saw his niece and her friends and team tied up and at gunpoint at the hands of the Atlas police force. It's commander, a scrawny gray haired old lady with an obviously haughty personality by the way she walked, went up to Qrow as he slowly advanced onto the group.
"I take it this group of miscreant juveniles who dared to try to impregnate the impenetrable and all-powerful defenses of the Atlesian airforce belongs to you?" Cordovin arrogantly asked, bitterness in her tone.
"Hey! You're the guys who keep blocking all air travel, we just wanted-" Ruby argued before being silenced mid-speech by a roar from the commander.
"I DID NOT GIVE PERMISSION TO SPEAK!" Cordovin roared at the top of her lungs, even the guards had to cover their ears at the screech. Qrow just sighed as he took a swig of his flask. His niece's plan to steal a shuttle to fly to atlas to inform the General of their information wasn't their first idea, she did politely ask after informing the commander of this need, but was turned down very rudely. Qrow couldn't blame them for acting recklessly, it was sometimes necessary when the proper and polite ways didn't get you shit. Politeness though was never Qrow's way so he grinned as he got an idea in his head to free his niece and make the Atlas jerks look like fools at the same time.
"2 birds one stone right?" Qrow thought to himself as he armed his duel disk blackbird, a black disk with red streaks slanted to have jagged duel disk slots for each monster zone, looking like a damaged black birds wing,
"Tell you what, if your Atlas defenses are so all-mighty, why not prove it in a duel for their freedom and our admission to Atlas." Qrow challenged. Cordovin just snickered as she heard this request.
"And why should I violate protocols and waste time with you drunkard?" Cordovin mockingly asked.
"If your scared to face us in a duel I guess Atlas really has let itself go huh?" Qrow retorted. His plan to rile her up to agree to his demands worked, cordovin was fuming, veins sprouting up her head as he armed herself into a battle suit, a giant white mech 3 times qrow's size.
"Very well, I will show you the perfection that is Atlas's might and wall. However, should you lose, you will join these brats in the slammer for their crimes." The commander demanded and Qrow agreed, at least now they all had a chance to get free and to Atlas.
The duel itself was a tough wall to fly over, or at least that's what the commandeer sneered when she set up a huge fortress of monsters, but Qrow simply halved their attack points with Gale the whirlwind and dismantled some of her machines to her irritation.
"You dare defy Atlas and make a mockery of its impenetrable might!?" Cordovine yelled with a fury.
"Not impenetrable if my birds beaks open up the cage." Qrow snickered. This was the last straw. Cordovine resummoned her ace monster, Machina Citadel, but Qrow was prepared and attacked with armor master, even though it bounced off the fortress to WBY's worry.
"Why attack it when its so much stronger?" Weiss asked worried.
"Don't worry! It's part of Uncle Qrow's plan!" Ruby cried out and Qrow nodded.
"She's right you old hag! Since Armor Master battled it left a Wedge counter on you overgrown tin soldier, dropping its stats to zero." Qrow explained mockingly to the commanders shock.
"Gah! Then I'll just clip that birds wings! With this!" She yelled as she drew and doubled her monsters ATK with Limiter Removal, worse she also wiped out all of Qrow's monsters and resurrected Machina Cannon.
"Oh no! If Cannon's 800 ATK hits Qrow with Machina Soldier's 3200 we're talking…" Blake cried out.
"4000 in one turn!" Yang continued in shock to Jaune's team, her sister and own teams shock. As Machina Soldier dropped Qrow to 800, they sweat nervously, almost enough to slid right out of the energy binds ensnaring them. They didn't know what felt worse, the fact Qrow was losing their chance at freedom or the disgusting wet sensation as their backs rubbed up against one another.
"Gah! Kick her old butt Uncle Qrow!" Ruby demanded.
"Won't be happening, Machina Cannon! Attack his Aura Directly and make him suffer for daring to defy Atlas!" Cordovin yelled as her monster shot a beam of fire and plasma from its cannon, but Qrow suddenly had Blackwing Raikiri on the field blocking the stream of energy with its sword.
"Sorry, but my trap Ascension swapped Armor master in my grave for a new Blackwing Synchro, better luck next time." Qrow snickered. And he was going to make sure there was no next time for the commander as he summoned out a new tuner and brought out his ace monster.
"Now my level 1 Blackwing Orochi the squal tunes my level 7 Raikiri the rain shower. Since summon chants are for little brats I guess ill skip straight to it, I synchro summon Blackwing Dragon!" Qrow hollered as he summoned a black dragon with red and black wings and a bird like mouth with razor sharp teeth and 2800 ATK. RWBY and Jaune's team cheered at the sight of the powerful beast, especially once Qrow formed a loop with Zephryos the elite to damage his dragon and resummons it, only to use its effect.
"Now your Citadel is going to crumble, see once I give up my 4 blackwing counters your monster loses 2800 ATK and you lose 2800 Aura. Go Blackwing Burst!" Qrow hollered as an orb of black energy with red lightning arounding enveloped Citadel. The electricity zapped Cordovin till she had 800 aura left like Qrow.
"M-Me? On the same level as a drunkard from the slums!? Impossible!" Cordovin hollered with rage.
"It is impossible, because your lower than me you snooty old hag. Go Blackwing Dragon, wipe out her citadel and her aura." Qrow demanded coldly as his dragon breathed a stream of black fire at the fortress. Cordovin grit her teeth as she refused to let it end, her pride needed to be avenged. As she thought this, she failed to notice the computer in her duel bot's begin to glow red slightly and emit static.
"I activate the trap Machina Overdrive and I destroy my own Citadel!" the commander yelled with rage as her fortress monster disappeared to everyone's shock.
"W-Why kill her own monster?" Ruby shuddered to ask.
"Because my dear, Atlesian's always think ahead and know when to make sacrifices for the win. By doing this I was able to pull the most powerful monster from my deck and summon it to squash your pathetic uncle and then you brats for your crimes." Cordovin sneered as she saw the groups faces pale. She was really going to execute them? For stealing and trespassing?!
"I won't let that happen!" Qrow hollered.
"Too little too late I-" Cordovin yelled before her deck slot began to glow red, shocking her hand as she reached for it.
"WHAT!?" She cried out in shock. Suddenly her computer lit up, showing a black man with an overly exaggerated mustache snickering at her.
"So sorry to interrupt you fun, but I just couldn't resist offering Atlas a hand my dear." The man sarcastically said.
"Watts! What are you doing?!" She angrily asked before her jaw dropped as a card began floating out of the duel disk to her shock.
"My master sensed the bitterness going on in town and asked me to hack into your systems to put this in your virtual deck as a little….thank you gift for scaring so many children today. She really appreciates it." Watts snickered as the card plopped itself onto the duel board, emitting a red miasma that nearly suffocated Carolina, she tried to open the hatch but found it locked.
"Oh and you won't be able to leave till the duel's over I almost forgot to mention that. Ta-Ta!" He said as the screen went dark. Soon a giant red and black version of Machina Force shatters the duel bot from within, stealing its parts as it combines with them and snatched Carolina in one hand, almost squeezing her to death.
She didn't know what hurt worse, the looks of pity on these kids faces for her or being squeezed. She decided to play Watt's game to end this pain as quickly as she could. The bot allowed her to draw, but when she disregarded the card it squeezed tighter, as if demanding she hurry her moves up lest she dies. Its thoughts and intention soon seemed to seep into her mind itself, giving her a massive migraine.
"Alright *gag* alright already! I activate this effect you so desperately want to play. I return all my Machina's to my deck from the grave to wipe out all your cards Qrow!" Carolina roars with a mix of her tone and a demonic one to her own shock as the evil citadel begins erupting red lasers all around it, not just zapping the cards and destroying them, but attacking the nearby town and the children, who thankfully were spared harm as the laser only destroyed the bindings.
"We gotta destroy that thing before it destroys the town!" Ruby yelled out as she armed her duel disk along with her team. But just as she summoned Black Rose Dragon and her friends summoned their aces, they were all instantly destroyed by the lasers before they attacked.
"Kids stand down, just get let me finish this thing!" Qrow demanded and they looked at him dumbfounded.
"You don't have anything left to play Uncle Qrow!" Yang protested as she eyed his empty field and hand, something the mech also did as it aimed at Qrow with its remaining hand.
"IT'S OVER!" Carolina roared.
"LOOK OUT UNCLE!" Ruby cried out, tears stinging her eyes as she worried for her teacher and uncle.
"Nothing's over because now I can activate Kalima the Hazes ability from my graveyard!" Qrow yells as the spirit of a red hazy bird blocks the punch from the mech to everyone's joy.
"Now I get to resurrect a synchro monster and make it the new target of this attack. You may have us done Salem but you don't have us out yet because I bring back to the field, BLACKWING DRAGON!" Qrow yells confidently as he revives his ace.
"Insolent fool! My mech still has 4600 ATK. It will annihilate your lame lizard and you with it!" A possessed Carolina roared as the mech did as well emitting a red and black laser from its mouth. Qrow just snickered as she did so.
"You don't know how long I waited to say this to an Atlas bitch like you, I WIN!" Qrow yelled as he banished 2 copies of Black Wing in his grave to activate them.
"Your playing a trap from your graveyard!? You can do that!?" The possessed commander yelled and Qrow nodded to his niece's joy.
"THAT'S MY UNCLE! KICK HER BUTT UNCLE QROW!" She yelled enthusiastically and he grinned.
"Gladly, because these 2 traps activated thanks to you destroying them. Now you and I lose our monsters and you take damage equal to your Ruinforces Attack points, Game Over! Go Black Orb Blast!" Qrow yelled as his dragon enveloped itself and Ruinforce in a black sphere of darkness, incinerating both as Carolina felt the red miasma leave her as her aura dropped to zero.
Luckily Ruby managed to catch her before she could fall to the ground. The young maiden's selflessness touched the old combat veteran yet also confused her.
"W-Why save me when I tried to squash all of you?" She asked.
"Because good duelists, good heroes don't take lives they protect them. Even if those lives can be annoying at times." Ruby said firmly. Carolina sighed as she felt the disappointed eyes on her from the others. She hated to admit it, but not only did she lose this duel fair and square to someone she mocked, but it was her arrogance that caused this disaster today. She knew only one thing that could make it right as she threw the keys to her shuttle to Qrow.
"I think my official report will go down as fighting some bandit duelists who infected my mech with a virus and during the chaos, a shuttle was destroyed so no one should bother looking for it." Carolina said with a smirk as she crossed her arms and averted her gaze to the groups relief as they bolted to the shuttle, leaving the old commander to settle in her thoughts.
Meanwhile, Ruby was busy clinging to her Uncle, her saviors arm lovingly to his mid annoyance but secretly joy.
"Thanks Uncle Qrow." Ruby said softly as he tussled her hair.
"Got to save your butts kiddo, its just my job." Qrow retorted teasingly.
"Yup!" Ruby said gleefully as the ship powered up and began its flight. "TO ATLAS!" Ruby cheered next to her Uncle's ear to his annoyance.
"Man….gonna need a big refill when we get there." Qrow quietly groaned as he saw he was low in his flask to his despair. Give him duels against evil robots any day over being sober and babysit at the same time!

Featured Duel: Qrow Branwen (Blackwing) vs Carolina Cordovin
Duel is conducted under 5ds rules: Players start with 4000 Aura, draw on their first turn, and can summon monsters in face-up defense mode.
Turn 1: Cordovin
Cordovindraws. She normal summons Machina Soldier in attack mode (Star 4/1600 ATK). Since it was normal summoned she can special summon via it's effect, Machina Machina Metalcruncher in attack (Star 10/ATK 2800). Since it was summoned, Metalcruncher lets Cordovin select 3 earth machine monsters from her deck to have Qrow select 1 at random between. Cordovin selects 3 copies of Machina Cannon and adds 1 to her hand. She then sends Machina Citadel, Sniper, and Machina Protector to the graveyard to her graveyard to special summon "Cannon" and have it gain 800 ATK per monster sent (x3) (Star 9/ATK 0 – 2400). Cordovin then activates the spell Machina Defense Perimeter, so Qrow is forbidden to attack level 6 or lower Machine monsters or target them with effects, also if a machine monster gets destroyed Cordovin can add a machine monster in her GY and add it to her hand.
Turn 2: Qrow
Qrow draws and normal summons Blackwing-Kalima the Haze in attack mode (Star 4/600 ATK). He then special summons via it's effect Blackwing-Gale the whirlwind in Attack mode (Tuner/Star 3/1300 ATK). He then uses its effect to half Metalcruncher's attack (Metalcruncher ATK 2800 – 1400).
Qrow then special summons since he controls a "Blackwing" monster Blackwing-Bora the Spear in attack mode (Star 4/1700 ATK). He then tunes Gale to Kalima to Synchro summon Blackwing-Armor Master (Star 7/2500 ATK). Qrow then activates the spell Monster Reborn to special summon Gale back from his graveyard in attack mode and uses its effect to half Cannon's ATK (Cannon 2400 – 1200 ATK).
Gale the whirlwind attacks Cannon and destroys it (Cordovin 4000 – 3900 Aura). Defense perimeter lets her add Machina Protector from her graveyard back to her hand. Bora the Spear attacks Machina Metalcruncher (Cordovin 3900 – 3600 Aura). Once more she adds Cannon back to her hand via Defense Perimeter's effect. Since a Machina Monster was destroyed, Cordovin activates Machina Citadel's effect from the graveyard to special summon itself in attack mode (Star 10/3000 ATK).
Armor Master attacks citadel but isn't destroyed and Qrow takes no battle damage via it's effect. Furthermore, Citadel gets a wedge counter losing its attack and defense points (Citadel 3000 ATK – 0).
Qrow sets a card and ends.
Turn 3: Cordovin.
Cordovin draws. She activates the spell Magic Destroyer to destroy Defense Perimeter since it's a face-up spell card and draw 2 cards. She then activates Limiter Removal to double all Machine monsters ATK on her field until the end phase, but she must destroy them at the end phase. (Soldier 1600 – 3200 ATK). Citadel targets it via it's effect and destroys all Qrow's monsters due to having less ATK then Sniper. Cordovin then sends Machina Protector to the graveyard to special summon Cannon (Star 9/0 – 800 ATK). She intends to deliver a one turn kill and attacks with Soldier. (Qrow 4000 – 800 Aura)
Qrow activates Blackfeather Revenge Ascension to banish a synchro monster with Blackwing in its name from his graveyard to special summon from his extra deck one with the same level but a different name. He banishes Armor Master to special summons Assault Blackwing Raikiri the Rainshower (Star 7/2600 ATK).
Cordovin sets a card and ends. Limter Removal's effect destroys Citadel and Sniper. Since another Machina was destroyed, Citadel's effect revives itself (Star 10/3000 ATK).
Turn 4: Qrow
Qrow draws and activates the spell Clipped Blackfeather to discard Blackwing- Zephryos the Elite to draw 2 cards.
Qrow then activates Raikir's effect to destroy Cannon. He then normal summons Blackwing-Orochi the Squall (Tuner/Star 1/400 ATK). He tunes it with Raikiri to Synchro Summon Blackwing Dragon (Star 8/2800 atk).
Qrow sets a card.
Qrow then activates Zephyros the Elite's effect from his graveyard to special summon it in attack mode by returning a card on his field to his hand, but takes 400 points of damage. (Zephyros Star 4/1600 ATK). He returns his set card, but Qrow activates Blackwing Dragon's effect to negate the damage and gain a counter and lose 700 ATK per counter (Dragon 2800-2100 ATK). Qrow sets a card which destroys Zephyros via its own effect.
This performs a loop where Qrow returns his set card and resummons Zephryos 3 more times (Dragon 2100-1400-700-0 ATK).
Qrow then activates Blackwing Dragon's effect to remove all its counters and deal damage to Cordovin equal to the amount of counters it removed once per turn then regain its ATK (Blackwing Dragon counters 4-0, 0-2800 ATK) (Cordovin 3600 – 800 Aura). Furthermore, Citadel loses 2800 ATK (Citadel 3000 – 200).
Blackwing Dragon attacks Citadel but Cordovin plays her trap Machina Overdrive whose anime effect allows Qrow to draw, but Cordovin gets to destroy Citadel during the battle phase and special summon a new Machina monster from her deck ignoring its summoning conditions.
At this point, Arthur Watts hacks into her duel bot, infecting her deck with a virus that changes a card, Machina Force, in her deck into Machina Ruinforce which she special summons (Star 10/4600 ATK).
Qrow sets 2 cards and ends.
Turn 5: Cordovin
Cordovin draws Spirit Barrier. Cordovin shuffles 3 Machina monsters in her graveyard, Sniper Citadel and Cannon, back into the deck to use Ruinforces effect to destroy all cards Qrow controls.
Ruinforce attacks directly but Qrow activates Blackwing Kalima the Haze's effect to banish itself during a direct attack to special summon Blackwing Dragon in attack mode and make it the new target of the attack.
Ruinforce attacks Blackwing dragon but Qrow banishes 2 copies of "Black Wing" from his graveyard to activate its effect, allowing him to destroy both monsters and deal Cordovin damage equal to Ruinforce's ATK. (Cordovin 800 – 0 Aura).
DUEL RESULT: Qrow Branwen wins
