Chapter Fifty

"Want to talk about it?" Sam asked as he walked out onto the porch.

Ruby sighed then glanced at him. "I was just thinking about that djinn hunt again. After it got us, we woke up in a house in Kansas. Not far from your childhood home. Dean and I were married. I was pregnant. Your mom was alive. Your dad had died from a stroke. We were still kind of close, but you and Dean weren't close at all. Then it was your mom's birthday and Jessica was alive. You guys announced your engagement."

"That sounds... wow. I can see why you're thinking about it again." He softened to her.

She shook her head. "Everyone we ever saved from hunting died because we didn't save them in that world. It just isn't fair, you know? Like I'm glad we actually saved them, but why do we have to sacrifice our happiness for it?"

"I don't know. Is that what you want? To marry Dean and have kids?" Sam gave her a hug.

The blonde hugged him back and sighed. "Yeah, I think I do. Obviously I wouldn't want to raise kids in this life. It wasn't fair to you guys and it wouldn't be fair to them either. I don't know. You guys were supposed to be able to do whatever you wanted once the yellow eyed demon was gone for good."

"Yeah, but we never accounted for all those demons being set free. It's going to be okay, Ruby. We'll figure it out. We always do." He assured her unaware that Bela had just called Dean.

"You know, Sam, once we deal with these vampires, we could swing over and say hi to Sarah if you wanted." Dean offered as they drove into Albany, New York the next day.

"Uh, no thanks. Maybe another time." He smiled wistfully.

They got settled in town then they focused on their hunt and went out that night. Finding a small pool of blood by an alleyway, they followed it until they found a man on the ground with a bitten neck. He pointed in the direction of where the vampire went. Dean went off in that direction while Sam and Ruby tended to the victim. He cut his arm with his knife taunting the vampire. She appeared out of nowhere latching onto his neck. Pulling out a syringe, Dean injected her with Dead Man's blood. She let go of him and convulsed before passing out. After getting her victim help, Sam and Ruby caught up with Dean. Neither were pleased with how he had lured the vampire, but both were relieved that he was okay. The vampire came to a little while later only to find that she was tied to a chair in a dingy motel room.

"Where's your nest? Where's the rest of your blood sucking pals?" Dean asked her.

"What? I don't know what you're talking about. Please, I don't feel so good." She pleaded with him.

Ruby gave her a confused look. "What's your name?"

"Lucy. I don't know what is going on. I'm telling you the truth. I just took something. I'm freaking out." She admitted while the lower half of her face was covered with blood.

"You took something? Hey, relax, why don't you tell us what happened?" Sam tried to calm her down.

"Yeah. I was at Spider. It's this club down on Jefferson. There was this guy. He was buying me drinks." Lucy recalled.

"This guy, what did he look like?" Dean asked.

"Uh, he was old. Like thirty. He had brown hair and a leather jacket. Deacon, Dixon, or something. He said he was a dealer and that he had something for me." She tried to remember.

"Something?"

"Yeah, something new. Better than anything I've ever tried, he said. He put a few drops in my drink." Lucy told them.

"Was the drug thick and red?" Dean asked only to see her nod in confirmation. "Well genius move, you drank vampire blood."

"What? No. It's a drug. I just need help." She sobbed.

"Poor girl." Sam said after the three hunters stepped away to discuss what to do.

They all seemed to agree and Ruby flinched looking away as Dean sliced Lucy's head off with his machete. The boys took care of the body then cleaned up a bit. They all felt bad for Lucy, but there was nothing else that they could have done for her.

"You know, this vampire guy keeps targeting blondes to turn. I'm not sure it's such a good idea for you to be on this hunt with us." Dean pointed out.

Ruby softened toward him. "I know, but I'll be fine. You guys would never let anything happen to me."

"Of course we wouldn't, Ruby." He assured her with a kiss.

The three hunters left the club Spider later that night. Dean was annoyed that it had been a waste of time. His brother spotted a man matching the description Lucy had given them walking into an alley with a pretty blonde. They followed and approached them just as the guy was about to put a few drops of blood into her drink. Dean knocked him away yelling for the girl to get out of there. She freaked and ran off away from them. The vampire threw Dean toward a brick wall and ran. Sam helped his brother up then the three hunters ran after the vampire.

They turned the corner and he was gone. Facing them was Gordon along with Kubrick, the guy who had tried to kill Sam during their rabbit foot hunt. Dean pushed Ruby behind him as Gordon raised his gun. The three of them dove behind a car as shots rang out.

"I'll hold them off. You guys get out of here." Dean pulled his gun out.

"Are you out of your mind?" Sam looked at him like he was crazy.

"They want you dead. It's my job to protect you. Just get her somewhere safe okay?" He pleaded with his younger brother.

Ruby shook her head. "I'm not leaving you."

"I love you. Please, just go." Dean kissed her.

She kissed him back then frowned when he ran out into the line of fire. He drew Kubrick's attention away from them at least. Sam and Ruby went in the opposite direction narrowly missing being found by Gordon. They also missed the sight of the vampire taking their place and grabbing Gordon. The hunters made it back to their motel room without being followed. It was a little while later that Dean walked in as well.

Ruby sighed in relief and pulled him into a hug. "Don't you ever scare me like that again."

"Sorry. At least we're all okay." He returned the hug and pressed a kiss to her head.

"You're seriously crazy running into gun fire like that." Sam looked at him clearly worried.

"Yeah, it was kind of badass. So I guess Gordon's out, huh?" Dean sighed.

"I guess so. How the hell did he know where to find us?"

"Son of a bitch!" Dean pulled out his phone making a call.

"Hello Dean." Bela answered the phone.

"So question for you. When you called me yesterday, it wasn't just to thank me for saving your ass, was it?" He asked.

"Gordon found you, huh? He pulled a gun on me. What was I supposed to do?" She confessed.

"A heads up would have been nice. You could have picked up a phone and warned us that a raging psychopath was on our tail." Dean replied angrily.

"Look, I'm sorry that I got a little sidetracked. There is three of you and one of him. I figured you guys could handle it." Bela told him.

"There was two of them and they tried to kill us." He yelled.

"Oh." Her face fell.

"Bela, if we make it out of this alive, the first thing I'm going to do is kill you." Dean warned her.

"You can't be serious." She frowned.

"Listen to my voice and tell me if I'm serious." He said then hung up.

Ruby frowned at him. "Dean, calm down. We're fine."

"No, Ruby. You or Sam could have been killed. The least she could have done was warn us." He shook his head.

She shared a look with Sam and they knew that they needed to let him calm down on his own. They left him in the room while they went and got food. After returning, the three ate while the guys discussed Gordon. They were pretty much unanimously agreeing that they had to kill him. Dean's phone rang afterward while he was sharpening his machete.

Ruby answered it putting it on speaker. "Hi Bela."

"Hello Ruby. Listen, I don't like when people hold grudges against me and more to the point, I don't want you to kill me. I prefer being alive. So I went ahead and found Gordon's location for you. Consider this an olive branch." She explained to them.

"How do we know this isn't a trap?" Dean asked skeptically.

"Because as much trouble as I've caused you three, I'm not stupid enough to get on Bobby Singer's bad side." Bela scoffed.

"Fair point." Sam chuckled slightly.

"I consulted with my spirit board. Gordon is in a warehouse. Two stories on the riverfront. Neon sign outside." She told them.

"Thanks." Dean sighed.

"One more thing. For whatever it's worth, the spirit had a message for you. Run like hell, leave town, and whatever you do, don't go looking for Gordon." Bela recited.

Ruby frowned at that. "Thanks, Bela. We'll take that into consideration."

"Good luck." Bela said then hung up.

It wasn't long afterward that the three of them went down to the warehouse despite Ruby's uncertainty over the spirit's warning. The building was quiet. They were surprised to find the vampire there looking utterly defeated while surrounded by bodies. It was Sam that realized the heads were ripped off instead of sliced off.

"What did you do?" Sam asked.

"It was stupid exposing my family by bringing a hunter back here. I know. I just wanted revenge. I was going to feed him to the girls, but he wouldn't stop talking." Dixon explained.

"Yeah because you're such a family man." The older Winchester brother rolled his eyes.

"You don't understand. I lost everyone I ever loved. You don't know what it's like staring down an eternity alone. I wasn't thinking. I just didn't give a damn anymore. Do you know what it's like to not give a damn anymore? It's like you're dead inside. So go ahead. Do it already." He nodded at Dean's machete.

The three hunters looked at each other before Dean put Dixon out of his misery. They searched the city after that, but there was no sign of Gordon. Returning to the motel, Sam remembered that Gordon had his and Dean's phone numbers. He took the sim cards out destroying them along with the phones so the hunter turned vampire couldn't track them. Ruby kept hers since Gordon didn't have her number.

"Okay you guys stay here. I'm going to go looking for him." Dean grabbed the Colt.

"What? No! Do you have a death wish or something?" His younger brother looked outraged.

"No. Of course not. Look, he's after you not me and he is turbocharged. I want you both to stay out of harm's way." He explained to them.

"Dean, I am sick of your kamikaze bullshit trip." Sam snapped.

"I'm more of a ninja." He chuckled.

"That's not funny." His brother rolled his eyes.

"It's a little funny." Dean shrugged.

"I wish you would just drop the act. I know you're scared and that you don't want to go to Hell when this year is up." Sam pointed out.

"How do you know?"

"Because I know you! You're my big brother. I've been looking up to you and following you all of our lives. I know you better than anyone else in the entire world. Well, aside from Ruby. I just want you to drop this uncaring strong man act. I don't need you to be strong for me. I just want my brother back. Because... just because." He finally admitted to his brother.

"Alright, we'll hole up here. Cover our scent so he can't track us and wait until sunrise." Dean caved.

After going with Dean to a nearby store, Ruby burnt some sage walking around the room with it while the boys barricaded the room. "I'm proud of you guys. One giant problem with this plan though. What if he searches the motels and sees the Impala parked outside?"

"Good point. It is a big city though. We'll just have to risk it." Sam sighed.

She put the burnt sage out then sat down. "Alright then."

Dean's new phone rang catching them all by surprise.

"You've had that phone for like two hours. Who did you give the number to?" Sam's brows furrowed.

"No one." He shook his head and answered it. "Hello?"

Gordon smirked when he heard his voice. "Hello Dean. Did you think I wouldn't catch your scent all over the cell phone store?"

"Well what are you waiting for then? Come find us." Dean taunted.

The older man chuckled. "I'd rather you come to me."

"What's the matter, Gordo? Afraid of us? We're just sitting here." He responded.

Gordon smirked again. "I don't think so. Factory on riverside off the turnpike. Be here in twenty or the girl dies."

A woman could then be heard crying. "Please. Please let me go."

"Gordon, let the girl go. You're still a hunter. You don't kill innocent people." Dean pleaded with him.

He scoffed at that. "I'm a monster now."

Ruby couldn't shake the feeling that this was a bad idea. She knew Gordon wouldn't stop hunting Sam though and she wasn't about to let anyone else get hurt in the process. The blonde stayed close to Dean as the three hunters walked through the factory. They followed the sound of the hostage crying only to find the girl tied up and sobbing. Sam untied her then helped her to her feet. They started heading back toward the way they had entered the factory. Suddenly a mechanized door slid down separating Sam from the rest of the group.

"Sam!" Dean started trying to break his way through.

"Dean!" Sam did the same on his side.

"Sam, be careful." He called out.

There was a workbench and tools on Dean's side so he tried to use the tools to pry his way over to Sam. The lights went out on Sam's side. As a vampire, Gordon had the advantage of being able to see in the dark. He stalked around following Sam as the younger Winchester stumbled around in the dark. He cornered him and smirked.

"You got me exactly where you want me."

Gordon chuckled at that. "You don't know what it cost to get to this point. I lost everything. Even my life, but it's worth it because I'm finally going to kill the most dangerous thing I have ever hunted. You're not human, Sam."

"That's rich coming from a vampire." Sam scoffed.

He smirked. "You're right. I'm a bloodthirsty killer."

"You didn't kill that girl though. Maybe there is still some good in you." He pointed out.

Gordon laughed at him. "No, I didn't kill that girl. I did something much, much worse."

At that moment, the girl in question attacked Dean biting his neck. Ruby helped him get her off of him. He then shot the girl in the head with the Colt. Her body lit up for a moment and she convulsed before collapsing to the floor. Using her machete, Ruby sliced the girl's head off just in case. She then checked on Dean and was relieved to see that he was alright.

Gordon backed the younger Winchester into a corner. "You've really got everyone fooled, but we're the same now, you and I. Sam, I know what it's like to live with evil inside of you. I understand you now. I'm going to do one last good deed though. Well, two actually. I'm going to kill you and then I'll kill myself."

He swiftly attacked Sam who fought back the best that he could. They went crashing through the wall ending up in front of Dean and Ruby. Sam reached for his machete that fell only for Gordon to stop him. Dean went on the attack only for the hunter turned vampire to fling him across the room. He hit a wall and slid down. Ruby was going to attack next only for Sam to look at her.

"Ruby, don't!" The younger Winchester called out.

The blonde froze for a moment then looked at the vampire. "My necklace. That time you used us as bait to lure Sam. You looked like you recognized it."

Gordon chuckled softly at her. "I don't know what you're talking about, sweetheart. It's just a necklace."

She moved to check on Dean while Sam continued to fight with Gordon. Grabbing a rag and a strip of barbed wire, Sam wrapped it around Gordon's throat. They watched as he tightened it until the vampire's head was sliced off.

"You just charged a super vamped out Gordon with no weapon. A little reckless, don't you think?" Dean teased his brother.

"Shut up." Sam chuckled as they staggered out of there.

"What's wrong?" Sam asked as Ruby delicately patched up his hands.

The blonde sighed softly. "He lied, Sam. Gordon knew something about my necklace."

"I don't know if anything he could have said about it would have been able to be trusted anyway." He pointed out to her.

Ruby finished patching his hands then started to clean up. "Yeah I know. It would just be nice to find out if it was just because I'm wearing the necklace or if I really was immune to Andy's powers."

"We'll figure it out. I promise you that." Sam assured her with a smile.

She nodded her head and smiled softly. "Alright."

He patted her shoulder then stood up walking over to where his brother was working on the Impala. The hood was open and Dean was bent forward trying to fix the car. Ruby appreciated the view for a moment and smiled to herself. Sam opened the cooler pulling out two beers. He shut the cooler lid then handed a beer to Dean before opening his own.

"Did you figure out what was causing that rattle?" He asked taking a sip of his beer.

"Not yet, no. Hand me a box wrench, will ya?" Dean took a sip from his own beer.

"Alright. Here." Sam grabbed the wrench handing it to Dean.

"Thanks." He took the wrench and thought for a moment. "Sam."

"Wrong wrench?"

"Nah, it's the right one. Just come here for a second." Dean gestured at his brother.

"Yeah?" Sam looked confused as he walked over and leaned forward beside his brother.

Ruby smiled watching as Dean pointed different things out under the hood. At least Sam seemed to know what Dean was talking about there.

"What's with the auto shop, man? Wait, you don't mean you want me to..." Sam trailed off in confused shock as his brother handed the wrench to him.

"Yeah I do, Sammy. Fix it." He chuckled stepping aside.

"Dean, you barely let me drive the thing." The younger Winchester pointed out.

"Yeah, well, it's time. You'll need to know how to do this in the future. Besides, isn't it my job to show my little brother the ropes?" Dean smiled softly at him.

"Uh, yeah." Sam smiled and leaned forward pushing back his emotions.

"Put your shoulder into it." He called out.

Ruby giggled softly at him. "Well now you just sound like my Dad."

"I'll take that as a compliment." Dean smiled at her.
