Gianna Marino - Rachael Taylor
Prologue: It All Falls Down.
Stepping into her home, Gianna Marino smiled to herself relieved to be home after a long shift at the hospital and wanting to spend some much-needed time with her husband; she had not been able to spend a lot of time with each other because of their busy schedules. Gianna was a Trauma Surgery Fellow while Michael was a defence attorney, they had been together for seven years and married for four years now and they couldn't have been happier.
They had even put a down payment on a house that she loved, it was in a nice neighbourhood not far from the hospital so that she did not have to commute far for work and it meant an even shorter travel time to work for Michael. They had talked about start a family had come up quite a bit recently as well, Gianna loved the idea of being a mother and she thought that Michael would make an amazing father.
They were not actively trying yet but they had both agreed to let nature take its cause and if she found herself pregnant then they knew that they were ready for that. Looking around the main area of their apartment, Gianna wondered where Michael was since she knew that he had gotten home earlier than her; his keys were in the bowl by the door and he had not said that he had been working late.
She stood quietly for a moment before shaking her head and dismissed it, she was sure it was nothing and perhaps a new case had popped and he had not gotten the chance to message her. Moving to let her hair out of the ponytail, Gianna headed for the kitchen pondering what to make for dinner so that she could surprise him when he did make it home after a long day of case reading.
However, stepping into the kitchen Gianna froze at the unfamiliar sound that reached her ears and she frowned turning towards the bedroom; a small smile forming on her face as she padded towards the room. Pushing the door open, Gianna peered inside to see Michael getting ready and putting on a suit; she leant against the doorframe watching him with a smile upon her face.
"Going somewhere?" Gianna teased watching him, she couldn't believe how lucky she was to have him in her life; that she got to spend her life with such an amazing man. Michael jumped slightly and turned to look at Gianna while he tried to fix his tie, he grinned seeing her as Gianna moved to help him with his tie; he was always so hopeless when it came to tying his tie.
"You've forgotten haven't you?" Michael teased looking down at Gianna as she fixed his tie for him, he raised an eyebrow at her daring her to deny that she hadn't forgotten that they had somewhere to be this evening. He watched as her face clouded with confusion, her brows furrowing as she focused on the tie while wracking her brain to work out what she was missing right now.
"My parents' gala," Michael laughed putting her out of her misery, he knew that she'd been bogged down with things at work; he had been too if he was honest and he didn't blame her for forgetting this evening. If it was any other gala then he would have skipped but his mother had insisted that they attend, dinner would be served and there would be dancing; it was an evening that they both needed without work interrupting.
It had been far too long since they'd had a date night, there just kept being things that came up for both of them; they both worked hard to be where they were right now in their careers. His parents had been supportive, stepping in often to make sure that neither of them struggled in the paths that they had chosen; they had adopted Gianna as their own daughter since they'd met her. Gianna stared at him, she felt horrible for forgetting and she knew that it was far too late to back out now; it had been a long day at work and she had hoped to curl up in front of the tv with him.
"You get ready, your dress is all laid out for you," Michael said pressing a kiss to the top of Gianna's head, he rubbed her shoulders knowing that they would leave whenever she was ready. They didn't have to stay out late, they had to make an appearance really and then they could be on their way; his parents would be grateful that they had just shown their faces. Gianna nodded her head before she hurried to the bathroom, she didn't think it would take her long to get ready.
"I can't believe that you let me eat all that food," Gianna grumbled leaning back in the car seat and rubbing her stomach, she was sure that second dessert had been a good idea when she had helped herself to it. The food had been amazing and she had never had a bad meal when attending one of Nancy's events; her mother-in-law always threw the best parties and she always ended up taking leftovers home. Michael laughed and glanced at her as they made their way home, it had been a good evening and just what the two of them had needed to let their hair down after all the hard work that they'd been doing.
"I did warn you about that second dessert and the third for that matter," Michael said defending himself, he didn't think that he'd ever known anyone like Gianna who could eat that much cheesecake without throwing up. He'd never had a sweet tooth until he had met Gianna, there was just something about her that made him say yes to dessert wherever they were.
Gianna groaned and shook her head, he was her husband and he should have talked her out of eating the cake; she felt like she was going to explode from all the food that she had eaten. They'd even brought home leftovers that Nancy had packed for them, they were in the boot of the car with strict instructions to be put straight into the fridge when they made it home.
"The rain seems to be coming down heavier now," Gianna noted peeking out of the window to distract herself, she couldn't believe how much it was raining and she was glad that they had managed to avoid getting wet when getting in and out of the car. The last thing that Gianna wanted was to get soaked in this rain, she loved the dress that she was wearing and it would be a shame to see it ruined by the weather. It had been a gift from Michael for her birthday, he loved buying her gifts and seeing her wear them; there was something about the smile he gave her that made her feel all fuzzy inside.
"It is," Michael agreed nodding his head, it was really coming down and he couldn't remember the last time that they'd had a storm quite like this. The sound of thunder rumbled over head and Michael tightened his grip on the wheel and sat up a little straighter as he focused on the road. Gianna shifted in her seat, her eyes squinting to see what was ahead of them as the rain poured down; the headlights of the other cars seeming almost like blares on the road. Tapping her fingers against her knee, Gianna took a deep breath as she tried to ignore the anxiety that bubbled in her stomach; she hated driving around in weather like this, she'd seen far too many injuries working in the ED from accidents caused by this weather.
"You okay there?" Michael asked spotting Gianna's knee bouncing, he rested on of his hands on it to stop it; a small smile on his face knowing all her nervous little ticks. His thumb rubbed back and forth to comfort her, he didn't blame her for getting nervous especially when the rain was coming down so hard that it was hard to see what was coming.
"I hate this weather," Gianna whispered shaking her head, she often found storms like this peaceful when she was in their apartment watching them roll in. It eased her nerves and she liked to watch the lightning across the sky, there was something about watching storms that were so smoothing to watch when you weren't the one trapped outside in it.
"Don't worry, I wont let anything happen to you," Michael told her, he moved his hand from her knee to cup her face and he looked at her; he would rather die than have anything happen to Gianna. She was the best thing that ever happened to him and he couldn't wait to start a family with her, he had seen Gianna with her nieces and nephew; she would be an amazing mother when the time came for them to start their own family.
They had only recently been to visit her sister in California after the birth of her nephew, he could have sat there for hours watching Gianna holding him. It was at that moment that a truck blew through the intersection that they were approaching, the high beams shining into the car as it raced towards them.
"MIKE!" Gianna screamed seconds before the truck slammed into their vehicle, the car spinning in the road before slamming into a street light. Glass shattering upon impact and the car horn blaring, neither occupant in the car moving as the rain poured down upon them and thunder roared from above.
