Gianna Marino - Rachael Taylor

Chapter Eight: Confrontations.

"I am exhausted," Gianna murmured stretching her arms above her head as she stood in the locker room, her shift was finally over and she was looking forward to heading home after the long shift that she had just done. 28 hour shifts were her least favourite especially when she couldn't sleep in an on call room for longer than thirty minutes; it seemed never ending and she was so happy to be going home.

"I don't know what it is about the holidays that make people think they're indestructible," Connor replied with a shake of his own head, the run up to Thanksgiving always seemed crazy with Christmas following only a few weeks later. He had spent six hours in surgery after a man had fallen from the roof of his house in some sort of weird competition that he was having about decorations with his neighbour. Gianna laughed and nodded her head, pulling on her jacket knowing that it would be cold out; she was looking forward to curling up on her couch with a hot drink before going to bed.

"The joys of the holiday season," Will added running a hand through his hair, all of them were looking forward to heading home and catching up on some much needed sleep. It had been a very long day indeed and it was well deserved, especially after the car accident with a bit of road rage that had resulted in two drivers getting into a fight in the ED.

"I am so ready to crawl into bed," Natalie added pulling on her scarf, she knew that she would have to relieve Helen of Owen when she got home and she doubted that her toddler would let her sleep anytime soon. There were groans of agreement, all of them knew that crawling in to bed was going to be what they did when they got home after the never ending shift.

Shouldering her bag, Gianna made sure that she had everything before closing her locker for the night; she fished around her bag to grab her car keys so she wouldn't be stuck in the cold trying to find them by her car. The group made their way out of the locker room, chatting on the way as they headed for the car park all of them preparing to head home; one by one they split off from the group heading to where they had parked their cars.

"Hey you," called a voice as Gianna approached her own car, she paused nervously as she turned to face the direction of the voice ignoring her own inner voice telling her to keep walking to her car. Instead she found a woman that she didn't recognise marching over to her, she looked upset and Gianna wasn't in the mood for a fight after the long day that she'd had; she just wanted to curl up in bed and forget about everything for a while.

"I don't know who the hell you think you are but stay away from Bunny," the woman ranted making Gianna confused, she had no idea who this Bunny person was or why she was being told to stay away from her. She wracked her brain trying to work out just what the woman was talking about, she went over every patient that she had treated that day trying to work out if she was referring to one of them.

"I don't know what you said to her but she's been terrified to leave the house since you spoke to her," the woman continued on, not seeing the confusion on Gianna's face as she ranted about how Bunny was frightened to leave her home. Gianna stood there trying to think about who she could be talking about, she felt stupid for not knowing and she was sure that she would know if she had upset someone so badly like this woman was saying.

"I can make your life difficult," the woman said flashing her police badge at Gianna, who stood there dumbfounded and a little freaked out; she took a nervous step back as she tried to process the situation and what was being said. There was no interaction that she'd had today that stood out and she didn't think that she had been that horrible to any of her patients today to warrant what was happening.

"Listen I have no idea who you are talking about. I apologize if I upset your loved one," Gianna said, she held onto her bag as she watched the woman who seemed even more upset that Gianna didn't know who she was talking about. Spots of rain started to fall from the sky and the wind around the two women picked up as they stared at one another, the tension growing with each passing second and Gianna slowly edged back to her car. An angry looked fill the woman's face and her hand went to rest on her gun, causing Gianna to freeze in place; her eyes glancing around to see if she could spot any sign of cameras that could be watching this interaction.

"Back in October. I don't know what you said or did but she now won't leave the house and is threatening to leave Chicago because of you," the woman said through her gritted teeth, she knew that as a doctor that Gianna would see a lot of people but surely she wasn't that dense. Or did she go around upsetting a lot of her patients that it was just an average day sort of thing that she couldn't remember who she had upset and when she had done it; she would have come sooner but Bunny had gone to ground for a couple of months.

"October?" Gianna said with a furrowed brow, she stared at the woman trying to work out what she was talking; it had been months ago, it was coming up to Christmas now. Gianna doubted that she had done anything, that this was clearly a case of mistaken identity when it hit her just who she was talking about and her stomach dropped.

"Barbara," Gianna said finally realising who this woman was talking about, she honestly couldn't think about any other interaction that she had that stood out other than this one. The woman clicked her tongue not liking the fact that she had opted to use Bunny's given name rather than the one that she had gone by for all those years; she had been warned against it herself growing up.

"I didn't say anything to upset her. Hell I didn't even know she was here in Chicago," Gianna said shaking her head, even after her talk with Julia about seeing her again it still didn't ease the feeling that she had. The woman looked annoyed at Gianna's words, she didn't want to believe that especially after how Bunny had reacted and had been acting like the world was about to end.

"The truth is I haven't seen her since I was a baby, she's my mom and until October I had never laid eyes on her," Gianna said trying to clear the air, she watched the other woman's face drop as she stared at Gianna as if the puzzle pieces started to fall into place. The other woman started to shake her head, not wanting to believe what she was hearing right now; she didn't want to believe that Gianna had called Bunny her mother.

"That's not possible. Bunny is my mom," the woman said taking an unsteady step backwards as she tried to process what was happening right now. Gianna stared at the woman, Julia's words playing in her head as she tried to process what was happening right now; a headache forming as she looked at the woman and it all started to fall into place.

"Erin," Gianna whispered, she stared at the woman that she had never imagined that she would be in this situation and she suddenly felt like she needed to sit down. There was silence for a moment, Erin staring at her like she was seeing a ghost and she couldn't believe that this was actually happening right now.

"Barbara Fletcher is my mom, she walked out on us years ago," Gianna said shaking his head, she honestly didn't know what she was going to do in this situation as she had never expected it to happen like this. Hell, she didn't believe that she would ever see Erin or their baby brother ever again; there were so many questions that she had and she honestly didn't know what to say right now.

"I can't do this," Erin said stumbling back, her mind racing at the fact that she was in this situation and she didn't want to deal with it especially the idea that Bunny had lied to her again. She shook her head not wanting to believe that her entire life could be a lie, she knew that she had a younger brother but she hadn't seen him in years and Bunny was pretty inconsistent in her life.

Gianna opened her mouth to say something but stopped as Erin turned around and fled unable to wrap her head around the fact that she had a sister; one that she had no idea existed. Watching Erin run back to her car, Gianna shook her head knowing that it had probably been a lot to take in and from what she knew of Bunny from Julia it had been a shock to Erin.

Taking a deep breath as Erin's car sped out of the car park, Gianna slowly moved back to her own car; she was slow to move and once in the car she sat there for a moment before reaching for her phone. Everything felt automatic as she sat there calling the one person that she knew would want to hear about that.

"I just met our baby sister," Gianna said to Julia on the phone, she sat back in her car trying to wrap her head around what had just happened and what it could mean.
