Gianna Marino - Rachael Taylor
Chapter Eleven: The Bad Date.
Tapping her foot against the table leg, Gianna checked her watch as she took another sip of wine while she waited for her date to arrive. This entire thing had been Maggie's idea and Gianna was starting to regret letting her friend talk her into this blind date. He was nearly an hour late and Gianna felt rather embarrassed that she was sat here all alone. Surely, he wouldn't stand her up on a blind date like this.
Hell, Gianna had even gone out a bought a lovely outfit for this evening even if she felt more nervous about the idea about getting out there again after losing her husband. Taking a sip of her wine, Gianna let out a sigh and glanced around the busy restaurant anxiously; this was her worst nightmare come to life, she felt like she had been stood up.
Gianna swore that if he wasn't here in ten minutes then she was going to pay for her drink and head home, she could order in and drowned her sorrows away from the public humiliation that she was currently facing. Glancing around, Gianna was certain that there were people whispering about her; the looks of pity from the wait staff as they passed her by serving other people since she had insisted on waiting for her date to arrive to order.
It did cross her mind that perhaps Maggie might have set her up to fail, she felt guilty for thinking so and this did remind her of the many date nights that she had shared with Michael. Her late husband had been the romantic type, his gestures had left many jealous and she knew that he'd always gone out of his way on her birthday.
"I am so sorry that I am late," called a voice and Gianna turned to see Adam Ruzek moving towards the table as quickly as he could; he looked like he'd been sleeping on the streets for a month and looked more like a homeless person that a member of the police force. Gianna forced a smile to herself to hide the disappointment in how he looked, she had put some real effort into her appearance wanting to impress whoever Maggie had set her up with.
Pressing a kiss to her cheek, Adam quickly moved to take a seat knowing that he was very late and he chugged down the glass of water that was already set out for him. Gianna felt the urge to vomit as he passed her, her stomach rolling and she resisted the urge to hold her nose; it smelt like something had died and then had rotted in the summer sun for weeks on end.
"What is that smell?" Gianna asked trying not to breathe through her nose, she could taste the putrid smell and other guests around them seemed to also notice the smell that lingered around her table. If it wasn't embarrassing enough that she had been forced to wait an hour for him to show up, now she had to deal with the looks that people were giving her because they thought Adam was some sort of tramp.
"Sorry I was working an undercover gig," Adam said sniffing himself, he didn't think that he smelt that bad really and while he did think that he was a little under dressed for their date, he was sure he looked fine. Gianna looked rather nice in the dress that she was wearing from what he could see, she had certainly made a little effort and he would have to make it up to her for turning up so late.
"So, what are we ordering?" Adam asked moving to grab one of the menus that was lying on the table, he suddenly disappeared behind the menu leaving Gianna to stare at the cover of the menu. If she didn't know any better, she would say that he hadn't wanted to come on this date either; she certainly couldn't imagine anyone else putting so little effort in on a first date.
"I think I shall have the steak with onion rings and tartar sauce," Adam decided with a nod of his head, his eyes glancing past Gianna towards one of the other tables as he leant back in his seat so he wasn't spotted. He remained focused on the happenings of that table while Gianna slowly picked up her glass of wine and downed the remained of its contents, it was going to be a long night that, she was sure.
Gianna made a noise of disgust, she honestly didn't know why she was still sitting here especially when her date smelt like something died; she couldn't bring herself to stand from her seat as he looked through the menu. Clearly Gianna was a glutton for punishment as she didn't make a move to leave, instead found herself looking through the menu before her.
"I will totally pay you back, I can't believe I forgot my wallet," Adam said once they stepped out of the restaurant, Gianna was almost relieved to be in the fresh air and she took a deep breath as she started to walk to where she had parked her car. Adam trailed behind her, apologising profusely for not being able to pay for their date as he followed her to her car to make sure that she got there safe.
Gianna tuned him out, already planning what she was going to do when she got home; she would never let Maggie set her up on a blind date again in her life. So lost in her thoughts, Gianna jumped slightly when Adam cursed before he ducked behind one of the cars that lined the street. Gianna looked at him confused before spotting the couple just ahead of them walking down the street, she froze in her place as she realised just where Adam's focus had been the entire time.
"You were watching your ex," Gianna breathed with a shake of her head, unable to believe that she hadn't realised that this was the reason that he had been so distracted during the meal. Not that the conversation hadn't been incredibly awkward on its own, they had very little in common and Gianna had regretted not leaving before she had ordered her food so that she could have avoid the entire situation.
Adam opened and closed his mouth, unable to find the words to deny that this was the very reason that he had suggested meeting Gianna at this restaurant. Kim's new relationship with Sean rubbed him up the wrong way, he couldn't help but feel like the officer had meddled in his relationship somehow and caused Kim to pull away from him just because he wasn't in a hurry to plan their wedding.
"Unbelievable," Gianna scoffed with a shake of her head, she held her clutch tightly in her hand before she stomped away from Adam wanting to get out of here. It was a massive knock to her confidence that he hadn't even wanted to come on this date with her, only using her as an opportunity to spy on his ex-fiancée and her new man while he had the chance to do so.
"Wait," Adam hissed quickly jogging after Gianna as Kim and Sean disappeared from view, he felt bad for using her like that but he didn't know what else he should do. Everyone else seemed to have no problems with how quickly Kim had jumped into her new relationship with her partner, the man that was responsible for her getting shot last year.
"I'm sorry alright, I should have been upfront with ya about what was happening," Adam apologised grabbing into Gianna's arm and pulling her to a stop just feet from her car. He got that he had made a poor decision and from what he had heard from Maggie, Gianna hadn't been looking for anything serious especially since she had recently divorced.
"I'm just worried that she's rushing into something because she's upset with me, we only called off the wedding a bit ago and already she'd dating this tool with an attitude problem," Adam explained knowing that it was the best that he could do. He didn't know what it was about Sean Roman but the guy seemed to hate him for some reason, his warped opinions on what was right in a relationship had been the reason that Kim had left him. Sure, he had been a bit indecisive when it came to planning their wedding, he'd happy elope if that was an option but he knew how much a big wedding had meant to Kim.
"Really? Cause the tool kinda sounds like you," Gianna replied fishing her car keys out of her clutch before unlocking her car, it was freezing outside and she wanted nothing more than to get out of the cold. It wasn't far to her place from here, she was thankful for that and she was sure that Apollo would be thrilled to have her home. Adam watched her climb into her car, awkwardly standing there for a moment as he realised that he had to say something. Approaching the passenger side door, he knocked on the window and waited for it to roll down before he ducked down to speak with her.
"Any chance that I could get a lift home?" Adam asked stuffing his hands in his pockets, he had no cash to hail a cab with and it would be a rather long walk home from this place. He hadn't really thought any of this through when he had decided to use the date to spy on Kim, it certainly didn't help that he had lost his wallet. Gianna stared at him for a moment before driving away, she wasn't going to waste another moment on a guy that was not worth her time.
