Chapter 4 – Double Trouble! How They Came To Darkness
"Tear her apart as you did before!" Ape Fighter moves in and punches Aussa, the earth charmer crying out in pain. That pain passes onto Luca, holding the part of her body Aussa was struck before she shattered.
Luca: 3250
"And now, finish the phase!" Ape Magician raises the cursed needle and fires directly at Luca. The poor girl shields herself, before Eria steps in to take the damage.
"Eria!?"
Luca: 2450
As the damage subsides, Eria drops to her knees. "I'm… I'm okay. This is nothing compared to what my friends went through…"
Back in the Real World…
"Yusei…" Lua whispers in pain after taking damage from Trap Reactor shooting Staplen.
Lua: 3200
Yusei then gets a good look at his opponent, seeing Bomber's face. "Bomber… those markings… are you-"
"Yes, that's right. And when I'm done with him, you're next!" Bomber points to Yusei while preparing for the end of his turn.
"Bomber… why?"
"You know exactly why… I can't let Goodwin get away with what he's done, and you protecting him put you on my list, Yusei!"
"Bomber! Revenge isn't going to solve anything!"
"Nothing you say will deter me! I will kill you and Goodwin for what you've done!"
"What about your siblings? Is this what they wan-"
"THEY'RE DEAD! WHAT WOULD YOU KNOW OF WHAT THEY WANT?!" he screams back, shutting him up.
Knowing he can't convince him, Yusei turns to the green-haired child. "Lua, you have to stop! Leave this to us!"
"No… I can't Yusei," he replies, still in pain from the attack.
"Lua! This is a battle for the Signers! You don't have to get involved-"
"But Luca does!" he shouts back, his heart burning on his sleeve. "You, Luca, Aki, Jack… the only way we can stop this and save everyone is if you all fight the Dark Signers and seal their towers! But you guys are all pulling your weight, so I have no reason not to. I want to be there for Luca and protect my sister, and I'm not letting him or anyone else go after her!"
"… Lua…" Yusei whispers, touched by the boy's heart.
"So you guys focus on the towers! I'll handle Bomber!" At that, he holds a hand out. "Staplen's effect! When he's destroyed by battle, the monster that did loses 300 atk!"
Staplen's remains come up and fires staples at Trap Reactor, weakening it.
"Then, I'll set this card and end my turn," Bomber concludes his turn, causing Dive Bomb's effect to come undone.
As Lua draws his card, the adult corpse stares at the child. 'Lua, I understand how you feel… wanting to protect your sibling, it's not unlike what I want. If only things could have been different… if you want to protect something, then fight for it.'
Ushio turns to Yusei, asking, "What should we do?!"
Sighing, Yusei says, "Nothing… we can't stop a Shadow Duel once it's already begun. We'll have to have faith in Lua…"
Seeing his new card, Lua starts to think about his next move. If Trap Reactor is here, he can't risk activating trap cards. Still, it's much worse if he brings out that Giant Bomber AIRRAID first. He will need to bring out his ace.
"I summon Deformer Scopen!" Lua's next monster is a telescope appearing in the center of his field. It transforms turning into a robot.
Scopen: 800/1400 (3) Tuner
"Tuner?"
"Scopen allows me to special summon one monster from my hand. Come out, Videon!" Next up is a handheld camera that switches to become a robot.
Videon: 1000/1000 (4)
"Next, I activate Deformer Trailer Power Generator!" Gadget Hauler drives in, carrying a trailer behind it. The truck stops just beside the Deformers as the trailer opens up. "This spell card can only be played while I control two or more Deformers in different positions. It allows me to draw 1 card from my deck for each one."
Two cards shoot out from the trailer and add to the top of Lua's deck, allowing him to draw. Gadget Hauler then drives off with the trailer, disappearing. "And now, I'll tune my level 4 Videon with my level 3 Scopen!"
Scopen cries out bravely before dispersing into three rings that pass through Video. "Docking strength with courage will protect the world's peace! Synchro Summon!"
Coming forth from the light is a mechanical dragon colored yellow. Its shovel tail whirls about as it swings its scooper arm on the right and drill screwdriver attached to the left. "The envoy of love and justice – Power Tool Dragon!"
PTD: 2300/2000 (7)
"Yes! He brought out his Synchro Monster first!" Ushio cheers as Yusei smiles in approval.
Bomber scuffs. "So, that's your ace? A fake dragon for a fake Signer, I guess."
"I'll show you fake!" Lua spins his arm like a helicopter. "Power Search, go!"
The kid's deck ends up being shuffled, allowing him to pull out the first card that sticks out. Upon a flip, it's revealed as 7 Completed. "I activate 7 Completed!"
A makeshift slot machine appears in front of Power Tool Dragon, all three landing on 7 before the robot dragon gains power.
Power Tool: 2300→3000
"I'll also equip him with Break Draw!" From his hand, Lua slides a card into his dragon, adding more power to it. "This lets me draw a card for every time Power Tool destroys a monster by battle."
His monster moves in as Lua enters his Battle Phase. "Battle! Power Tool, attack Trap Reactor RR!" Power Tool swings using the scooper arm, releasing an explosion. "Yes!"
Bomber: 1800
Bomber slides back a few feet from that as Lua cheers.
"Alright, kid! He got the first leg up!" Ushio says, though his enthusiasm drops when he sees Yusei skeptical.
"Isn't this just like…" As the smoke clears, Yusei's fears are realized. Because not only is Trap Reactor there, but there's a beige plane robot next to it.
"Fake Explosion. It allows me to negate the destruction of my monster and summon Summon Reactor AI."
"Aw, man! And after all that hard work!" Lua shouts, entering his Main Phase 2. Since Trap Reactor isn't scrap, he doesn't get his draw. Even worse, he needs one more monster to summon his Air Raider.
So, Lua simply ends his turn.
"Looks like you haven't learned anything from our last duel." Bomber draws his card, disappointed in the little one. Giving his drawn card a look, he immediately plays it. "I summon Magic Reactor AID!"
Magic Reactor appears as a dragonic machine monster of brown and red. "Next, using Summon Reactor's effect, I will release all three monsters!"
Summon Reactor, Trap Reactor, and Magic Reactor come together and fade away into a bright light. "By sending all three of them to the graveyard, I can special summon this monster from my deck!"
He slaps a card to his field, his markings glowing as a result. From the skies appears a monstrous mechanical being that is literally a combination of the three with a military green paint job. It flies in the air with its arms and legs uselessly dragging. "Giant Bomber AIRRAID!"
AIRRAID: 3000/2500 (8)
"And here it is…" Lua says as he watches the giant monster descend. He has taken a loss against this thing before. This time, he's ready… hopefully.
"Next, Giant Bomber's effect." Bomber takes a monster card and sends it to the graveyard. "By discarding a card, I will destroy one card you control. And I think I'll start with your dragon! Sharp Shooting!"
All six machine guns point down at Power Tool, before unloading full metal jackets on it. Power Tool raises its arms to protect itself, the bullets hitting it and around Lua. He cries out avoiding them until Power Tool moves in front of him for better cover.
Lua doesn't notice it, so he activates his effect. "Power Tool's effect; by sending one Equip Spell to the graveyard, Power Tool's destruction is negated!" 7 Completed is revealed as his choice.
"Wait, Lua!" shouts Yusei.
But it's too late. His spell is destroyed. "Eh? Ah, no! Not that one!"
"Then I'll simply destroy your monster by battle! Death Air Raid!" Three missiles launch at Power Tool, which raises its arms to guard against them.
This time, Lua notices the gesture even as the shockwave hits. "… Power Tool?" It looks back at him with a nod. "I'll send Break Draw to the graveyard!"
Lua: 2500
"Lua!" shout the adults watching.
Bomber watches as Lua suffers, some pain striking him in his black heart. If only things could have been different… "I will finish my turn."
'He's strong… and I made a bonehead move!' Lua gripes as he thinks about what to do. Now he has to deal with that effect active on his turn. If he summons a monster or sets a card, that card will be destroyed and he takes 800 points of damage. That means, he'll have to trust in Power Tool's searching power.
Lua draws his card, seeing it with a smirk. 'Maybe I can make the most of this after all.' "I activate Power Tool's effect! Power Search!"
"I have you now!"
"Eh?" Giant Bomber AIRRAID positions itself above Power Tool.
"Once per turn, when my opponent summons a monster, sets a card, OR activates a card effect, I can destroy that card, and you take 800 points of damage! Death Drop!" Bombs drop from its crotch down upon Power Tool.
"Quickplay Magic, Swords at Dawn!" Break Draw rises from the graveyard the minute Lua activates his drawn card. "It equips my monster with a card in my graveyard! And, by sending it to the grave, Power Tool is not destroyed!"
Power Tool slams its screwdriver arm upward to divert the explosions.
Impressed, Yusei says, "There you go."
"Next, resuming Power Tool's effect!" A random card ejects itself, and Lua picks it up. He shouts, "Yes! Double Tool C & D!"
He reveals the card and slaps it onto the field and his dragon, giving it a drill and buzzsaw for arms. "Power Tool now gains 1000 attack during my turn!"
Power Tool: 3300
"An increase to 3300?!" Bomber shouts in bamboozlement.
"Power Tool, attack Giant Bomber Airraid!" His mecha dragon flies at the war machine and slams its drill into its nose-like chest. "Crafty Break!"
The drill pierces through, shooting out like a rocket punch before reattaching to Power Tool. Giant Bomber explodes on several parts of its body before it falls, landing flat in front of Bomber before detonating. The explosion sends him flying back into stones.
Lua almost goes flying too but is caught by Power Tool's tail. After that craziness, Bomber emerges from his damage, bleeding from his head.
Bomber: 1500
"Bomber! Are you okay?!" Lua asks out of pure concern.
"Worry about yourself. This duel isn't over yet."
That's true. He still has 1500 life points left. Lua needs to hold out and put pressure on him in his next turn. He might summon that other Synchro Monster. Even worse, he might have a Dark Synchro ready.
"I'll summon Deformer Magnen in defense mode and end my turn." This time, a magnet appears next to Power Tool.
Magnen: 800/800 (3)
"This is my turn then…" Bomber draws his card, before adding it to his hand. "You may think you have a chance now that Giant Bomber is in my graveyard, but it will never stay down that easily. First, I activate Chaos Zone!"
A field appears around everyone, turning into a nexus of light and darkness. "Next, I will activate Death Submarine's effect."
"Death who?" To answer Lua's thoughts, a submarine emerges from the field. "Wait! Where did he come from!?"
"This Dark Tuner can special summon itself from the graveyard while I have no monsters on the field."
"Oi, oi, oi! When did that even go to the graveyard?!" Ushio asks.
"When he used Giant Bomber's effect…" answers Yusei in realization.
Death Submarine: 0/0 (9) DARK Tuner
"Next, I will normal summon Darksea Rescue!" Bomber's level 1 monster turns out to be a rescue boat of dying passengers being rowed by demons.
Darksea Rescue: 0/0 (1)
"I'll perform a Dark Tuning with my level 9 Death Submarine and my level 1 Darksea Rescue!" The submarine opens its head before releasing nine stars that enter the lifeboat. Their sole star explodes against the one before it shatters, revealing eight dark stars. "Wailing audible from the depths of the thick darkness, be wrapped in the armor of the Soul Reaper and show yourself!"
From the dark light, a Dark Synchro Monster descends from violet clouds. "Dark Synchro! Appear now, Dark Flat-Top!"
Bomber's monster appears, but it's nothing more than a launchpad.
Dark Flattop: 0/3000 (-8)
"… that's it?" Lua asks while looking at it. "Didn't anyone ever tell you that bigger isn't always better?"
"Unfortunately, there are no monsters like that in my deck. Darksea Rescue allows me to draw two cards. Next, Dark Flattop; once per turn, I can special summon Giant Bomber AIRRAID ignoring summoning conditions!"
"You can what?!" The machine opens a portal on top of its launchpad. "So then, everything I did last turn…"
"Ultimately won't matter with this card!" From the portal, Giant Bomber appears good as new. "And now, by discarding a card, Giant Bomber will destroy one card you control."
Lua raises his arm as he prepares. Bullets rain down upon Power Tool, but instead of the dragon itself, it destroys the drill and saw it wields. "Double Tool!"
"By discarding Dark Sea Float, I can draw one card! And now, Giant Bomber will destroy Deformer Magnen!" Due to Magnen's effect, the Death Air Raid attacks the little magnet. Lua once more goes flying from the explosion and is saved again by Power Tool.
"I'll set one card and end my turn." Bomber watches as Lua picks himself up. It's admirable to him that his monster is so protective of him. "I'm amazed you've been able to push yourself this far. For a non-Signer, much less someone who lost to be before, you're doing far better than I thought you would. But nothing will stop me from getting my revenge."
Lua looks up at Bomber with sad eyes. "Bomber, you've joined the Dark Signers, but at the heart of it, you're thinking about your family you lost… I didn't want things to turn out this way, but I can't just walk away. And neither can you. So let's go."
Spirit World…
Back with Luca, she picks herself up as Demak continues with his turn. "What's wrong? You're not as good as I thought you'd be."
"I…" Taking in a deep breath, Luca affirms herself. "I'm still standing."
"Not for long. I shall end my turn with this."
Now free to make her play, Luca looks at her hand before drawing, seeing a spell card at the ready. 'Yes…'
"I activate Awakening of the Possessed." Her continuous spell card appears. "Next, I summon the Familiar-Possessed Wynn!"
Appearing now in a whirling wind is the green charmer.
Wynn: 1850/1500 (4)
"Awakening allows me to draw a card upon her successful summon." Luca then draws her card, before checking it out. "And, all monsters I control gain 300 for every different attribute I control."
Wynn: 2150
"Battle! Wynn, attack Ape Magician!" Wynn raises her scepter as the wind around them billows. She then yells firing blades of wind to slice through Ape Magician.
"Continuous Trap – Beast Rising!" Ape Magician disappears, quickly avoiding Wynn's blades. "By banishing Ape Magician, Ape Fighter gains his attack power!" Ape Fighter roars as it grows in strength.
Ape Fighter: 3000
"You won't be winning as easily as you wish."
"Neither will you." Luca takes a card from her hand and sets it. "I'll end my turn."
As Demak draws his card, he laughs before revealing it. "Synchro Boost. This equip spell will raise Ape Fighter's power by 500 and his level by 1."
Ape: 3500 (5)
"That thing's just getting bigger and bigger," Eria says while staring at it. "Aren't you overcompensating?"
"And next, I will summon the Dark Tuner Dark Ape!" Demak's next monster, to Luca's horror, is a weird gumby-like being with no whole body. It's just a series of lines with a face attached arranged to resemble a monkey.
Dark Ape: 0/0 (2) DARK Tuner
"And next, I activate the magic card Dark Wave." After playing his card, a wave of black energy sweeps the field. "This will reverse Ape Fighter's level to make it a negative."
Ape: (-5)
"A negative?" Eria asks in surprise.
"Dark Synchro monsters are made by subtracting the Dark Tuner's level from the regular monster. Without that card, he would be summoning a negative 3 monster. But according to that card and Algebra, this will only increase the level to 7!" Luca realizes, remembering the tiny bit of advanced math she got.
"This will lead me to perform a Dark Tuning using Dark Ape and Ape Fighter!" He aims his hand out, causing his monster to fade away as the stars enter Ape Fighter. The minute they do, they become dark, and instead of clashing with the others, the seven emerge, killing the ape.
As the seven dark stars spiral to generate a portal to the world without light, Demak chants. "He who is born from the darkness, become the ruler who shall lead all things into the negative world!
"Dark Synchro! Rise, Demon Monkey King Zeman!"
Appearing now is the monkey from before, Zeman.
Zeman: 2500 (-7)
"When Dark Ape is used as a Dark Synchro Material, I can draw two cards." Demak pulls his two cards. "Also, when Zeman attacks, you won't be able to activate magic or trap cards until the end of the Damage Step, so whatever that card does it won't help you."
"Then I better activate this quick. Unpossessed!" Luca reveals her facedown, a continuous trap that leaves a spell of power on the field. "While face up, all Familiar Possessed gain 800 attack points when they attack and all Charmers cannot be destroyed by battle."
"How will that help you now!? Especially as Closed Forest empowers Zeman for every Beast in my graveyard?!" Zeman raises his Cursed Needle staff as the surroundings empower it.
Zeman: 2700
"He's not as strong as Ape Fighter was, but a long-term goal is far greater. Battle!" Using the minus energy it collected, Zeman fires at Wynn. Despite her power, Wynn ends up being shredded to pieces. The leftover energy bombards Luca, or would have if Eria had not been there.
Luca: 1900
"For an opening act, this is far from entertaining. My payback won't be satisfied with just this."
The little girl looks up at Demak when he said this. This has to be known. "Payback… Demak, what is this about? What have I done to you?"
"It is not what you've done to me, but more my duty to the Dark Signers. By getting rid of you, I'll have fully subjugated Ancient Fairy Dragon and take full control over the Spirit Realm. Punishing you for the sins of those before you is more of a side benefit I am more than happy to reap."
"The sins… of those before me?"
He removes his hood, revealing himself to be a bald dark-skinned man. "No one believed in me when I said I would prove the existence of the spirit world. We were all parallel with a realm of spirits that are all connected to the game of Duel Monsters. But they called it baseless, questionable, crazy even. Nothing I said would convince them, and nothing I found could prove to them through their sights… until Zero Reverse."
His eye twitches as he recalls what happened.
He stood before an audience of scholars and scientists trying to prove his words, but they called him a fool, a failure, and even worse, a fraud. Then, he found out about what happened in Japan, Neo Domino City to be precise, and decided to look into it.
"It was then I found this group who all believed me. They saw Zero Reverse as a sign of the Spirit Realm punishing the real world for humanity's follies. I didn't believe them at first until I found him, Rudger. He was hailed as the harbinger of darkness who would remake the world as it should be, and he was their leader… through him, I was offered as a sacrifice."
As he declares this, he adjusts his cloak to show a deep scar on his neck. It looks as if something bit him and spread some poison. Luca gasps in horror as he continues: "I fell into despair, I sought nothing but vengeance, and that's when I was given a chance. The god Cusllu revived me as its agent, and the cult even gave me what I desired, the means to enter the Spirit Realm – Ancient Fairy Dragon."
"Okay, and where do I come in?"
He laughs a little. "I intended to find those who didn't believe in me and punish them, but then a change in plan came to me when I first entered the Spirit Realm. Imagine my surprise when I saw the daughter of the professor who discredited me bonding with the dragon Rudger gave me."
Luca gasps. Her father? "Rudger theorized her to be a Signer, one of the enemies we were destined to kill to destroy the world. So I went to work dismantling this world, all to prepare for your return."
"So then…" A piece of fear billows in her. "You set this up… to kill me… because of what my father said?!"
"Why not? Children inherit everything from their parents: their blood, their knowledge, and their sins. Just as it's Yusei Fudo's fault for Zero Reverse, it will be your fault." He laughs at the end of his speech, pulling down the hood. "This was your fate the minute you were chosen by the Crimson Dragon."
Narrowing her eyes, Luca looks down at her card left on the field. It's time she showed him a lesson. "That won't happen. Because Unpossessed has another ability; I can set a Charmer to the field if I lose a monster in battle!"
She pulls a card from her deck and sets it.
"No matter. I'll finish you in the next turn." He sets two cards and finishes his turn.
"It's my turn!" Luca draws, not even looking at it before going into her Main Phase. "I now flip over my monster. Come up, Dharc!"
Her facedown monster flips over, revealed to be the dark charmer in an attack position. Unlike the others, this one is a male.
Dharc: 500/1500 (3)
"So, that's the monster you called forth at the cost of your other monster. Not impressive even compared to the others."
"Then you won't think this is impressive. Dharc can steal one Dark Monster you control, and keep it as long as he's on my side of the field." Dharc's scepter glows purple, causing Zeman to illuminate as a response.
"NANI!"
Reluctant, Zeman moves over to Luca's side of the field, leaving Demak with nothing. "And, all of my monsters gain 300."
Zeman: 2800
Dharc: 800
"You stole my monster?!"
"Now you know what it's like to steal those other people and seal them away!" she shouts, gesturing to the multiple spirits in stone cards. "And it won't be the only thing I'll be taking from you! Zeman, attack!"
As the ape king charges his attack, Luca smirks as she states, "And his effect to keep you from activating effects will be useful!"
Zeman closes his eyes as he fires, frying the Dark Signer painfully. His cloak's hood incinerates, leaving his head exposed. He drops down to a knee, almost dropping his cards.
Demak: 1200
"I'm not done yet. Dharc, direct attack!" Her other monster takes aim, firing a blast of darkness to strike Demak.
Demak: 400
"I'll set a card and end my turn." Luca faces her opponent bravely, knowing the ending is in sight. But, she can't be too careless.
Getting back up, Demak's eyes become shrouded with black rage. "You've really pushed me this far… but that's the end of it."
He draws his card, grinning before playing it. "I play Dark Hole!" His spell card appears a powerful black hole that swallows all inside. "This magic card shall destroy all monsters on the field!"
Dharc flies in first before Zeman is forcefully pulled in while his claws try to hook on the ground. Claw marks are all that's left of him before he's swallowed.
"I can't believe you would destroy your own monster so easily." Luca's trap activates again, causing her to bring forth a new monster. "To replace Dharc, I summon Hiita the Familiar-Possessed!"
Hiita appears in a burning haze before taking a pose.
Hiita: 1850 – 2150
"And her summon allows me to draw one card." Luca draws her card before adding it to her hand.
"I activate Dark Matter!" Demak's trap opens up, causing him to pick up two cards from the top of his deck. "Because my Dark Synchro was destroyed, I can turn the top two cards of my deck into facedown monsters."
He places said cards onto his field. After doing so, Luca notes a problem. 'Two monsters… wait. Two monsters and a field spell… Uh oh!'
"I applaud you for making me work this hard. You're making this opening act far greater than it needed to be, and for that, I shall finish you off with my god."
"The Earthbound?!"
"Lyna!" Upon being called out, Lyna raises her scepter. A bright light releases from it, causing the stone tablets to move. As that happens, the heart of the Earthbound forms overhead. "I release my two monsters and the spirits resting in minus energy."
His monsters disappear. Following them, the spirits inside the stones fly upward into the skies into the heart, making it beat. Lyna screams as she's being sacrificed as well. Eria cringes feeling the pain of the spell affecting her. "Eria!"
"I'm… sorry… Guh!" Eria gets absorbed too, entering the heart.
"Descend and bring this world to ruin! My god, Cusillu!" His monster rises from the earth, a towering colossus of Atlas proportions taking the shape of a black monkey with yellow markings.
Cusillu: 2800/2400 (10)
"Cusillu…" Luca mutters seeing the card.
"I'm not done yet. I shall play my trap card, Cursed Prison." Demak holds his hand out as his last trap activates. "Allow me to show my respect for you girl, by summoning a very special guest. Cursed Prison summons a Synchro Monster from my deck in defense mode. Come forth, my prisoner!"
From behind Demak, the large stone monument that held Ancient Fairy Dragon comes forth. It shakes a little as the dear dragon emerges. This light blue serpentine dragon with a majestic appearance and butterfly wings appears on the field before Demak, inside a thorn cage.
"Ancient Fairy Dragon!?" Luca shouts, seeing her Signer Dragon in shock.

Lightz: And with this, we conclude this chapter. Next time, the conclusion. As well, the start of Yusei's duel with Kiryu.
