"Wait!" Please, don't leave me here," Nightlight cried, grabbing her mother's talon. Sharpclaws's eyes softened and she bent down to Night's height.
"Sorry Night. But this will be good for you. I will send you letters, I promise," Sharpclaws thought gently.
She hugged Night and soared up into the sky yelling, "Bye Night!"
Night watched her fly away and sighed.
"I will not cry," She thought and stepped towards the school. On the entrance were a line of scrolls named. She found hers and read them. It explained how the school worked and listed the new students.
Night read them aloud quietly, "In the Gold Winglet there will be Seal the Icewing, Uproar the Nightwing, Snake the Sandwing and Smoke the Skywing and in the Jade Winglet there will be Squelch the Mudwing, Blizzard the Icewing and Nightlight the Nightwing."
Night shivered. She hoped they were all nice friendly dragonets and weren't represented by their names. Then she heard the flapping of wings and gulped nervously.
First to fly in was Smoke. He had a mixed colour of orange and yellow but had huge red wings. His thoughts were grumpy. Then Snake landed. She had scales the colour of sand in the shadows. Night spotted that she had dragonbite viper earrings, a coiled cobra necklace (or neckband) and a python bracelet. She seemed to be calculating how to smartly and quickly kill everyone in her sight. She seemed not mean, but dangerous.
Then Uproar arrived. He was so black everywhere apart from his wings, which were dark, dark blue. He rolled his eyes at Night.
"It's that lazy Nightwing. She is definitely part Rainwing," He thought. Then Squelch landed. She seemed to be a normal dragon, with lots of different shades of brown.
Lastly were the two Icewings. Seal landed first. He was silver with deep blue spikes and had a huge grin on his face and smiled at Night. She couldn't help smiling back. But that all changed when Blizzard landed. She was silver with light blue spikes, wings and underbelly. Her glare made Night want to crawl under the mountain. She had circular, emerald earrings. Night touched her sapphire earrings, noticing the similarity in colour between Blizzard and her earrings. She eyed Night.
Nightwings. Stupid and lazy, hanging in banana land. She is too twitchy. Not smug but with those colours probably not much of a Nightwing," Blizzard thought.
Night winced. She had been complimented on her colours of black, silver, blue but mainly purple. It wasn't really used as an insult.
Blizzard turned around. "Don't know why Mother made me come" She thought. Night shrunk down. Blizzard was furious but Night did agree with her. Night was interrupted from her thoughts by tapping. A Rainwing jumped in front of her, bright yellow and smiling so much.
"Hi!" The Rainwing cried, "I'm Kinkajou, your clawmate! Welcome to Jade Mountain Academy! You are… Nightlight right?"
Night nodded, "Just called Night," She said quietly.
"Okay! Me and Qibli are supposed to show you around! Come on!" Kinkajou grabbed Night's talon and ran around the school.
"If he is not too sad," She thought but there wasn't a change in her colour nor scales.
"Qibli?" Night asked. Kinkajou glanced at her.
"Oh right! A friend of mine." Night followed reluctantly.
"They probably miss the old Nightwing," Night thought ruefully. Kinkajou jumped into a cave, dancing around.
"Qibli! She's here! Her name is Night and- come on!" Kinkajou cried, almost jumping on top of a startled Sandwing.
She is excited for Moon's replacement? He turned around and jumped (again) in surprise.
"Oh! Hello Night! I'm.. Qibli!" he said, sadness and curiosity written all over him. Qibli stepped out of the room and shook Night's talon.
"Oh! Your earrings! Wow!" Kinkajou ran up to Night and pointed at Night's shining, blue earrings. She changed colour, mainly a light blue, but with a deeper blue in her wings.
"Yeah, Sapphire. My favourite jem. My… mother gave them to me," Night said, and remembered her mother flying away and Night drooped her wings. Kinkajou brushed one of her wings.
"I like your earring, Qibli," Night said shyly. Qibli gave her a grateful and surprised look and smiled.
"Thanks. Welcome to Jade Mountain Academy!" Qibli cried and led Night and Kinkajou down the hallways.
I wish I could just forget Moon… He thought sadly.
"Wow, this place is amazing," Night smiled as they reached her cave. Kinkajou hugged Night and Qibli nodded with a smile.
"Guys… I have to tell you something," Night said nervously, looking down on the stone floor.
"I was born under a full moon so that means…I can read minds," Night barely whispered. Qibli and Kinkajou met her eyes in surprise.
Yay! She told us! Kinkajou thought excitedly. She shrugged at Night, grinning.
She is like Moon, but more… truthful… Qibli thought. He nudged Night as the bell rang. The three ran through halls until Night almost ran into Blizzard.
"Get out of my way, Nightwing," She hissed, glaring at Night.
Nightwings. Stupid and annoying. Why do they have to exist? Blizzard thought furiously.
Oh moons, I have angered someone already? Night thought anxiously.
"Hey! Leave her alone!" Qibli yelled standing next Night. She could feel his warm wing brushing lightly against hers.
"Or what exactly? I'm not scared of you, Sandwing," Blizzard said frostily. She smiled at him.
"My name is Nightlight," Night said quietly, not looking up at Blizzard.
"Sorry, I cannot hear you, Mumbles," Blizzard said icily. Qibli eyed her and she rolled her eyes at him. Night felt anger pushing through her.
"My name is Nightlight and you will leave us alone!" Night shouted. Blizzard sighed boredly, rolled her eyes again and walked off, thinking grumpy thoughts. Night stared after her, awed by what she had just done. Qibli nudged her with a smile.
"Good job. Let's go," He said and they walked off the class…
"Qibli, I can hear dragons coming and they don't sound friendly," Night whispered. Qibli met her eyes and Kinkajou stared at her.
Bye, bye, little dragonets! A dragon thought down the hallway. Their fury hurt Night's brain.
"Sunny-" Night started and was cut off by the screaming of a dragonet.
"Help!" a dragonet screamed. The Jade Winglet looked up from their scrolls.
"Mightyclaws!" Sunny screamed, jumping out to the front of the cave and eyed the dragonets.
"Hide!" She cried, then bolted out the room. Night closed her eyes, everyone's fear closing in.
"The lake! We need to hide! The dragons…I-" Night gasped, clutching her head. Qibli helped her up.
"It's gonna be okay. We will 't worry. Come on," Qibli whispered as calmly as he could. They ran to the lake.
"Meet you underwater!" Kinkajou cried, diving into the stood back as water droplets were sent flying.
"So we have to jump in?" Qibli said, looking like he regretted agreeing to this. Night smiled at him and grabbed his talon, pulling Qibli with her.
Are you sure this is the safest way? Qibli thought at her. Night nodded nervously. He grabbed her talon.
Okay, I trust you. He thought back. Night stared at him in surprise. He did? They had just met.
That is what happens when you tell the truth. Qibli smiled at Night's face. She could tell that he needed air so she swam up, dragging Qibli along too. Night and Qibli gasped for air when Kinkajou popped up.
"Where are they?" She asked, sliding up next to Night.
Will she tell us? If only Moon was here… Kinkajou thought. Night winced. She turned and tried to concentrate on the attacking dragons.
Screaming dragonets are everywhere. Gosh, they are vile. Hehe, let's put some on fire. Fear us! The Menace! One of the dragons thought. Night flinched. This dragon was full of fury and joy for hurting others.
"Run, dragonets, run!" The dragon called with a fit of laughter. Night realised with horror that she was just near the entrance to the underground lake. She had crimson-coloured scales with an orange underbelly and wings.
Crimson. Night realised. That's her name? Night nudged Qibli and pointed at her. Qibli nodded and whispered to Kinkajou.
"Don't hurt them!" A blue dragon roared, tackling Crimson.
"That's Tsunami!" Night whispered loudly to Qibli and Kinkajou. They gasped in surprise. Tsunami ducked under Crimson's flames but Crimson then grabbed a rock and smashed it against Tsunami. She collapsed on the ground.
"Tsunami! No!" Night whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. She needs to do something. But what?
More dragonets. Yay. Let's burn them. Crimson thought, seemingly triumphed.
Wait… does she mean us? Night wondered worriedly. Has she spotted us?
"Guys… I-" Night started but Qibli shushed her.
We have to be quiet. He thought. Night gulped and nodded , a burst of flames was heading at Qibli!
"Qibli! No!" Night cried, leaping towards him, adrenaline rushing through her veins
