Day 5: Mr. Rime
(BGM: Cold Storage from Black & White)
If you were to ask me what my least favorite Pokemon type is, I would most likely say Ice. It's not a very good type defensively, having a total of four weaknesses…if we're talking about base Ice types, most of the types attacking moves aren't very good, and it's not that super effective against that many types either.
What's that? It's super effective against Grass, Ground, and Flying types? Yeah, that's great, but these three types are weak to other, more common and more useful types like Fire, Water, and Electric respectively. The only good thing about Ice-Types is that it gives Dragon-Types something to be afraid of, and Dragon is a pretty uncommon type when going up against your foes.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the Ice type, but the execution was done horribly. Now having said that, there are some good Ice type Pokemon. Hell, Vanilluxe was an honorable mention for this marathon.
But for my favorite Ice Type Pokemon, we need to go to the Galar Region where we have a jolly good chap known by Pokemon fans as…
Mr. Rime!
(Insert Mr. Rime cry here)
(BGM: Hop's Battle Theme from Sword & Shield)
One of the great things about when Sword & Shield introduced the Galarian Regional Variants was they created a whole new Pokemon for that variant, if I may use Galarian Corsola evolving into Cursola as an example yet again as well as Galarian Yamask evolving into Runerigus.
One of the best, and more underrated examples of this, in my opinion, would have to be Galrian Mr. Mime evolving into Mr. Rime, both of which being based on, I kid you not, Charlie Chaplin!
Yeah, it's common for Pokemon to be based on random, everyday objects, but never have we had a Pokemon based on a real life person! And whoever created the idea for Galarian Mr. Mime and Mr. Rime must've been huge Charlie Chaplin fans because both of Rime's abilities are references to Chaplin's career, with Tangled Feet being based on Chaplin's tap dancing skills and Screen Cleaner being based on one of Chaplin's own films (As for which one, I don't know, I want to say 'The Kid'?).
It also helps that both Tangled Feet and Screen Cleaner are amazing abilities for Mr. Rime to have. The former raises Mr. Rime's evasion if he gets confused, and the latter negates Light Screen, Reflect, and Aurora Veil.
The one drawback I see with Mr. Rime is that being part Ice and Psychic, that means he has a total of six weaknesses. Sure, being part Psychic, he may not be weak to Fighting types anymore, but that gets replaced with the Psychic types' weaknesses to Ghost, Dark, and Bug.
Thankfully, with a good Special Attack stat, as well as a pretty good Special Defense stat, Mr. Rime can handle any opponent, especially if it has the impressive movepool most Psychic types are known for.
Naturally, Mr. Rime can learn good Psychic type moves, with Psychic being the most powerful one, but it can also learn Freeze Dry, which is also super effective against Water Pokemon.
As for the TM and TR moves, it's bonkers the amount of moves he can learn, especially when it comes to Special Attacks; Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Energy Ball, Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, Dazzling Gleam, it's all amazing!
Mr. Rime can even learn stat boosting/lowering moves and status moves like Light Screen, Reflect, Teeter Dance, Fake Tears, and it can even learn Mirror Coat, which deals massive damage if you were hit by a special attacking move.
There's just so much to love about Mr. Rime that it's not even funny…ironic given that Mr. Rime is the 'Comedian Pokemon'.
From his movepool, to his abilities, to his charming, Chaplin-inspired design, Mr. Rime is without a doubt my favorite Ice type Pokemon in the series. But as for my favorite Pokemon from Generation 8…oh, ho, ho…the best has yet to come.
But regardless, all I have to say to Mr. Rime is…jolly good show.
