"When Viktor Met Hermione"
When Viktor had first met Hermione, it had been a quiet afternoon. He had holed himself up in the Hogwarts library, fervently researching for the Second Task, not knowing exactly what it would be. And so, he had tried studying a little bit of everything that he could. It was immensely difficult for him: English wasn't his native language, and it wasn't even his second or third language, either. He had to keep stopping and starting in order to look up a word, and that cut into what little precious time he had away from his cohort, until his Headmaster tracked him down.
The library was mostly silent, aside from the occasional page turn or the scratch of a quill. Giggles erupted from behind bookcases every now and then, breaking his concentration. Viktor huffed angrily at the third giggle in one minute.
Another angry huff came from someone else several tables away.
Looking away from the paragraph he had been trying to dissect for the past twenty minutes, Viktor saw a girl in a Hogwarts uniform with the bushiest hair he'd ever seen, as if she used a brush to go through her curls instead of using a comb or fingercombing straight out of the bath. The girl glared at the bookcase concealing the giggles, and Viktor was sorely tempted to go and sit closer to her, just because of how much she would dissuade his fangirls from approaching him.
He gave into temptation and did it anyway.
"My name is Viktor," he introduced himself. The girl looked up at him in surprise before she shot another quick glare at where he knew his fangirls were hiding.
"I'm Hermione," she replied.
"Herm-ninny," he repeated. At her crestfallen face at his mispronunciation, Viktor felt her disappointment like a punch to the gut. He would have to practice the pronunciation, then.
Wait, why did he want to do right by her?
"Do you come here often?" she then asked him. He sent a soft smile in her direction before replying, letting their conversation shave hours off of his study time. But that was okay.
By the time Headmaster Karkaroff stalked by, looking for him, Viktor knew he had to see more of the fifteen year old. He didn't understand what was brewing between them, what with everything going on at Hogwarts, but he knew they had the chance to be good friends.
