"November 15th, 2016. Eight years ago… The joy inside me died that day as the ones I love were taken away from me. Somehow I got out, but the ones that mattered… I fell into a shell of myself and became a nuisance to the others around me and that only added to my own suffering. The pain… if I could just forget what happened that night, but would forgetting them be worth it? The memories we made I would treasure forever, even with this constant sadness in my heart. I would always choose to remember them. I still love them, and that's the reason why it hurts so much. I let them down, but this time… this time it has to be different"

Joel awoke groggily from his sleep on the couch, opening his eyes slowly to the bright sunlight that was shining through his sunporch. He groaned, staying squinted as he buried his head in the pillow in an attempt to shield himself from the harmful rays of light, he even attempted to fall back asleep but at this point he knew there was no going back. Again he groaned, turning his head and coming face to face with the photo from last night. He had completely forgotten that he had fallen asleep staring at it, paying way more attention to it than the TV which at the time was playing news broadcasts about the events at the diner. Joel had shut the broadcast out though, continuing to delve deeper into his photo and even now he was lost in it.

Joel's ears then twitched as he tuned into the TV for a second, feeling a split second of anger as he felt it was disturbing him and his thoughts. He searched for the remote, realizing he was still holding onto the bottle from last night as his arm slumped outside the blanket and over the couch. It still had just a bit of whiskey left in it as well. Joel took notice and rolled on his back, drinking the rest before tossing the bottle aside and digging for the remote again which was stuffed between the couch cushions. He then angrily clicked off the TV and closed his eyes again, appreciating the new found silence and relaxing back into his comfortable bedding, even with the sun still in his face. Well as much as it could be considering that the blinds were shut. They were stained yellow from all the smoking in the house, only helping the sun shine through, and without curtains like his bedroom Joel was forced to endure at least a little bit of the light which he still hated.

"What happened yesterday?" he thought to himself as he wondered why he woke up on the couch. It wasn't long though before the memories of everything came flooding back. He dug in his pocket for his phone, realizing it wasnt there and groaning, turning over again to look at his right when he noticed it laying on the coffee table. He reached, having to lean forward a bit and then grabbing it, falling back into his position as he checked the time. 9:28 the clock read, making him squeeze his eyes shut as he pinched them. He was late.

Once Joel opened his eyes again he swiped over to his contact list, finding the name Captain Rayes and tapped on it, placing the call on speaker phone as it rang one, two, three, four times before he answered.

"Hey Riley '' he greeted in a tone that didn't sound annoyed or impatient, just as if he was going about his day and spotted Joel in passing. It sort of caught Joel off guard as he pinched his eyes again, trying to not give into the oncoming headache.

"Hey… I know I'm late. I was just-"

"You're taking care of the girl. I know. I saw the protection request and granted it. I just hope she isn't too much for you" Rayes said, catching Joel just a little bit off guard. He was expecting to be scolded but if he could get away with showing up late then he would take it on this occasion.

"Yeah… and the request for the school-"

"Has been taken care of. Honestly I'm surprised you managed to get all that organized given the sudden events yesterday. I guess that's why you're my top guy. But still everyone has their limits. If that girl gets too much I want you to bring her here to let us take care of her. She'll be safe and you won't have to do this all by yourself" Reyas explained. Joel sighed, closing his eyes and rubbing his head.

"Yeah. I know. But we'll be fine here" he said, opening his eyes again and looking up at the ceiling. He heard his captain sigh, not knowing if it was over him or something else. It wasn't long before he got his answer.

"I cant believe that girl really has no family to look after her" he mumbled, clearly aggravated.

"Well even if she did that would just be putting the whole family in danger, and if that was the case then we would have to spare units to not only protect her but the family as well. Still that would run the risk of a ransom. This is for the best'' Joel explained. Again there was a bit of silence before he got a response.

"I guess so. We're already pulling more than we should for the school. I have the board breathing down my neck wanting to know why but they know now. At least she'll get out of class for awhile" Rayes joked. Joel didn't respond, knowing the event that happened leading up to her sudden lack of class time. "Too soon?"

"A little" Joel replied. Another sigh later and Reyas decided to part ways.

"Well if you need anything you know what to do" he said. Joel nodded to himself.

"We'll be fine" he assured. He then heard his Captain hang up, throwing Joel into silence again as he continued to lay on the couch. Again he sighed, realizing he had to get up but eventually did. It was only then did he realize he was still in his uniform, making him feel just a little lazy but he didnt care.

Joel looked down the hallway, seeing that his bedroom door was still shut and then looked at the time on the oven. It was now 9:42. Joel figured that Juno would probably be up soon. In his mind she would probably sleep longer than she normally would, being mentally drained by yesterday's events and her body demanding a good rest to recover. Still he found himself walking down the hallway and putting his ear against the door just to check on her but couldn't really hear anything. He then made a mental note to check in soon and stepped into the bathroom, turning on the light and grabbing his toothbrush.

He did the usual task of placing toothpaste and then brushing as the water ran, but this time he moved to the small closet just next to him and opened it up, taking out a pack of toothbrushes specifically for guests. Actually it was more for Joseph on the rare occasion that he stayed over. Three years he had this pack and only two were ever used out of the five. Joel held the toothbrush in his mouth, stopping his brushing to take one out of the pack and then putting the pack back. Once he returned to the sink he placed the new toothbrush on the sink and then continued brushing for the next two minutes, spitting into the sink and rubbing some cold water on his face.

Looking up Joel caught a reflection of himself as he looked in the mirror, thinking about yesterday and the lives he took. He had gotten into many bar fights, but killing someone wasn't exactly an everyday thing for him. In all of his career he had only killed someone one other time and it was because he had no choice, but the thought of that made him question whether or not he had one yesterday. Taking the odds into account as well as the situation made Joel realize that even if he did have a choice, those bastards didn't deserve to live.

Joel turned out the bathroom light, looking at the bedroom door again and then stumbled back into the living room. He considered brewing a pot of coffee, but for what? All that would do is wake Juno up as the smell of coffee grounds filled the small house, and it's not like he had to be anywhere.

Realizing he didn't really have much else to do he sat back down on the couch, making eye contact with the photo again which brought him the usual heartache. It made him want to drink which caused him to look over at the kitchen where bottles sat but like always he cursed himself for wanting a drink so early in the day. Instead Joel just grabbed the photo and laid back down, giving it a kiss and lying there, holding it to his chest.

It wasn't until twelve o'clock in the afternoon that Joel finally got concerned enough to get up and check on Juno. he had just kept an ear out as he laid on the couch over the hours enjoying the silence. Now it was very concerning considering how early she went to sleep.

Joel got back up, placing the picture on the table and heading over to his room, giving a few light knocks on the door. It took a few moments but eventually he knocked again, his heart rate going up just a tad bit as he didn't get an answer. After the second wave of knocks though he got what he wanted.

"Yeah?" Juno called tiredly. Joel breathed a sigh of relief and then replied.

"Just wanted to check in on you. You've been asleep for awhile" he said. This made Juno question herself, reaching over to grab her phone which she had put on the nightstand and look at the time. It surprised her that she had slept so late, but given the fact that she was off and on throughout the night made her feel a little less guilty.

"Sorry" she called back.

"It's okay. Listen, there's a toothbrush for you on the sink. Come out whenever you're ready I just… want to know if you were alright" Joel replied. Juno's eyes darted down as she felt a little off having someone check up on her in a caring way. It felt… nice.

"Thanks," she said. Joel didn't reply. He just heard her thank you and decided to leave her alone. Juno took note of his silence, listening to him walk back down the hall as she rolled over on her back, looking up at the ceiling. She then looked at her phone and saw that it was almost dead. She groaned, turning over on her stomach again and then noticed the charger on the nightstand. Her eyes opened up more as her ears perked up as well as her head. She reached over, taking it and seeing that it would fit her phone. She then decided that if Joel minded then she would just take it off the charger but for now she plugged it in, getting the sound that she did so.

Afterwards she sat up, stretching and getting ready to get up when she looked around the room, everything coming back to her one bit at a time. Throughout the night when she had woken up she had been grateful that it was all just a bad dream, but everytime she realized her surroundings reality came crashing down on her, and now it was happening again.

Juno's ears flattened as she whimpered, remembering what happened yesterday all over again. She even closed her eyes as she tried to block out what she saw but that only made it worse. If she thought about it she could still hear those terrified screams, the gunshots, and the crying of those who could not hide in their condition. It made her shutter and feel sick.

Juno gritted her teeth as she opened her eyes, going to get up but then sitting right back down as she noticed a sharp pain in her head. She had a really bad headache, probably because she hadn't eaten anything yesterday. She rubbed her head and whined again, trying not to lay back down but it was really tempting. Ultimately though she got up again, waltzing over to the door and opening it as she squinted her eyes in an attempt to shield herself from the sunlight coming in through the windows.

Juno's eyes soon adjusted as she walked into the bathroom, turning on the light and seeing the toothbrush on the sink. She also noticed the shower, wanting to use it as she hadn't taken one yesterday and with everything that happened it would only do her good. She had no clothes though and sadly had to stick with the outfit she was wearing. She would make an attempt to take one today but for now she brushed her teeth, taking Joel's offer and using the new toothbrush and then deciding whether or not to place it inside the cup where his sat. She decided against it though, putting it on the sink and leaving as she didnt know how long she would be here. In her mind Joel might have cared a little but he probably wanted to go back to life as normal, meaning he wanted her gone as quick as possible, and honestly she couldn't blame him. As of right now she could only bring harm.

Juno stepped out into the living room, finding that Joel wasn't in there. She grew confused for a moment and looked around, being prepared to make awkward small talk. There was no sign of him though. She then took notice of the bedding still on the couch and felt a small bit of guilt. To her it didn't matter what happened, he still had to sleep on the couch for her.

Juno looked over at the TV across from the couch. It sat off which made Juno consider turning it on for only a brief moment but decided against it. For some reason that came across to her as though she was getting too comfortable. Past the TV though she took notice to the blinds which sat ever so slightly open and saw Joel sitting out on the back porch. She felt a bit of joy finding him and decided to go out and say hi.

She walked over and slid the glass door open, grabbing the brown wolf's attention as he glanced behind him for a moment. Juno took note of his expression and felt a tad bit nervous as Joel wore what she could tell was his usual saddened face. Still she shut the door and then walked over, taking a seat next to him in the only other empty chair. There wasn't much outside on the small porch, just a table between the two chairs where an ashtray sat, the chairs facing away from the house and out into a wooded area, only trees being visible.

Instantly Juno fought the urge to wince as she breathed in the smoke from Joel's cigarette. He took a drag on it and then tapped it as Juno looked down at her hands and twiddled her thumbs nervously. She had to say something to start a conversation. What that was she didn't really know. All she could focus on was the awkwardness of her sitting there. She cursed herself in her mind as her heart raced, trying desperately to think of something until thankfully Joel said something first after blowing the smoke from his mouth.

"You okay?" he asked. It was a simple question but one that made Juno feel cared for. Even if it was only a little bit. Joel's head turned to her as he glanced at her slightly, not making full eye contact as he didnt want to break Juno's boundaries in any way. At the same time Juno didn't really know how to answer Joel's question, but technically speaking sure.

"Yeah… I'm okay. Just… shaken up I guess" she admitted as she tuned into the various cricket noises coming from around the outskirts of the porch. Joel nodded as he reached over to put his cigarette out, pushing it into the ashtray and leaving it there. He then leaned forward a little with his hands folded as he now faced her but looked down at the floor.

"I would imagine so. I still can't imagine what it would be like to go through something at such a young age. How old are you anyway? If you don't mind me asking" Joel said.

"Nineteen. I'll be twenty in a few months. It's weird. All I ever heard about was how much your life changes when you get to that age but… I don't know, everything just feels the same" Juno explained, trying to open up a little bit. Joel nodded.

"I can understand that. I kinda felt the same at that age. I guess it doesn't start to hit you until you start living on your own, find a partner and… just start living" Joel explained, wondering how he could get her situation explained to him without upsetting her or looking odd. If he could do that then he could help her better.

"I've been trying to make moves. I was in a bit of a panic though. I'm in school, yeah but… it's just general classes. When I moved here it was to make sure I succeeded. I got into a good school, made some friends, got a job but… well… you know…" Juno explained, making Joel feel sympathetic towards her again.

"What about a partner? Any boys in your school?" he asked, trying to lighten the mood. He felt a small sense of joy when he watched Juno smile a bit, remembering her latest crush.

"Well not in my school but… I have a friend that I've been talking to. It was a simple acquaintance at first but he's just so talkative. We only grew closer and we're really good friends. I'm just too scared to make a move on him" Juno explained as she thought of Jonah and the consequences her actions may bring if she did anything too out of line.

"Well I don't know much about him but… if you feel confident and you think he's the one… go for it. Even if he rejects you at least you'll know. Love is… love is an important thing" Joel said, looking away from Juno again. This made her turn to him, watching as he looked back forward and down at the ground, his hands still folded as he leaned forward. It was only then that she noticed a wedding ring on his finger.

"Yeah… it's just never worked out for me" she admitted, fighting the urge to ask Joel about his love life. But like Joel she didn't want to test her luck. She felt as though she was already lucky enough to be welcomed into his home. Not only that but she was lucky to survive. She began thinking about this realizing that she would be dead if not for him. "Hey… did I ever… thank you?" she asked nervously. Joel looked over at her again.

"For what?" he asked. She avoided his eyes as she felt shy, beginning to list anything that came to her head.

"For taking me in last night, being kind and just… saving my life. I would be dead if it wasn't for you" she explained, choking on her words. Again she turned to him, this time with a tear in her eye.

"I was just doing my job. Honestly I wish I could've done more. If not for you for… everyone else. I'm sorry you had to see what you saw" Joel replied. Juno simply closed her eyes and shivered, thinking about the image again of the never ending corpses and blood pools.

"I… I was so scared. I didn't think I would ever see the light of day again. But I still didn't want to accept it. I knew my odds but I still hid, just wanting it to be over. And then you came and… I just can't thank you enough. I only wish… I just… it's disturbing to think about the ones who didn't make it. It's disturbing because I know how they felt, and I had to listen to their final moments. I can't stop thinking about what was going through their heads in the end. Alice… she probably wanted her parents… Rose… Johnny…" Juno listed, rubbing tears out of her eyes.

"I'm sorry" Joel said, avoiding eye contact again. Juno wanted to tell him that it wasn't his fault, that he did all he could, and that there was nothing more that he could do, but she felt as though she already did and while she didnt want to throw a pity party she at least wanted to vent a little bit. It may not have seemed like it but she was giving it her all to keep everything in ever since it happened. Sure she may have broken down once she was saved but after stewing on everything those emotions only rose again, only to be locked up by Juno not wanting to look a certain way. On top of all of that she still had something to worry about, something she hadn't even brought up with herself yet, much less anyone else.

"I heard what that guy said about me… he's… after me… because of what I did" Juno said. Joel's eyes darted to her again.

"I'm… really sorry you had to do that" he replied, even though part of him wanted to bring up the fact that no matter what happened it would have resulted in the death of that brother. The only difference being that the blame would be on Joel instead of Juno, and he would have much rather had it that way. She panicked though and tried to help, and for that reason they were here now.

"Killing someone is supposed to feel awful, and I do feel awful about it somewhat but… I don't know, I guess everything else that happened just kind of beats that '' Juno explained. Joel didn't really know how to respond to that. So much so that after thinking about it for a few moments he decided to switch the subject.

"So you say you moved here from Japan. Does that mean your parents are in Japan?" he asked. Juno wiped her eye and looked down at the floor as Joel had moments ago, thinking about her parents as it brought back sore memories.

"Well my mom isn't in the picture anymore and… well my dad… yeah. He's in Japan'' she answered.

"Does he know that you're safe?" Joel asked, wanting to make sure that was taken care of.

"He doesn't even know anything happened. I haven't told him" Juno admitted, making Joel feel extremely confused.

"You haven't told him? Why?" he asked. Juno shrugged.

"Honestly? He wouldn't care. There's no point in bothering" Juno explained. Joel couldn't even believe she just said that. Let alone mean it.

"What do you mean he wouldn't care? His daughter was in a shootout" he exclaimed. Juno turned to him, her expression not changing as she heard stuff like this alot.

"I know it seems like he should but… we never really got along," Juno replied. Again Joel was speechless.

"Give him a call. If it were my daughter in that situation I would want to be the first to know, and I would be on the first plane here. Even if you have a bad relationship with him, you still have never been in a situation like that" Joel said, making Juno think about it. He was right, but still she had her doubts.

"I don't know. Even if I did want to call him I kind of left my phone in your room. It's on the charger" Juno said.

"Do you remember his number?" Joel asked. Juno nodded. It had been months since she last dialed it but she still remembered it. She watched as Joel dug in his pocket and extended his arm to her, holding his phone. "Give him a call," he said. Juno winced.

"I… I don't know-"

"Juno… he'll care," Joel said, feeling assured. Like he said if it was his daughter he would be over here instantly, scooping her up in his arms and holding her until she knew for a fact she was safe… loved… cared for…

"Okay" Juno sighed, reaching over the table and taking the phone. After she did, Joel stood up.

"I'll be in the house," he said, giving her some privacy. Juno didn't wait, just began to dial the number as Joel slid the door open and walked inside. She then put the phone to her ear, listening to the ringing until she got an answer.

"Hello?" said a groggy voice. Juno all of a sudden felt stiff, hesitating to respond to the familiar voice. Why am I even doing this? I know the outcome. Is it to prove a point? It's only gonna make me feel worse. Juno thought. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes as she braced herself.

"Hey dad" she greeted. It took a moment before she got a response.

"Juno?" he said.

"Yeah… I wanted to talk to you" she replied, not really knowing where to start. She heard an annoyed sigh over the phone.

"Do you need money?" he asked, causing Juno's eyes to widen a bit with the smallest amount of anger rising. But she reminded herself that he didn't know the situation.

"No. it's not that. It's… I just wanted to talk to you. Something happened yesterday and I just wanted you to know that I'm safe" Juno began, curious to hear his reaction.

"Safe? What happened?" he asked.

"Well… I was working and… we had a shoot out… not many people made it but I did… it was hard to watch it all but-"

"Are you hurt?" her dad asked, cutting her off which made her brighten up a little bit at the thought that he actually did care. She paused for a moment and then nodded to herself as she answered him.

"Yeah… I'm in protective custody right now. Some cops took me in and… they're protecting me I guess" Juno explained loosely as she still didn't completely know the plan.

"Is… is that all?" he asked. Again Juno froze. Any amount of caring she thought he had for her died in an instant and her heart felt crushed again. This is why she didn't want to do it. She knew the consequences and the heartbreak of being in denial and thinking that her parent would care for her, only to be proven wrong time and time again.

"Yeah dad that's it" Juno said aggressively, not really knowing what else to say. There was a long pause over the phone as she tried not to tear up. Part of her wanted to mention that "yeah dad, there's actually more. The guys who shot up my job and left very few survivors are still out there. They're actually a mafia and they're coming after me. They want me dead" but she knew there was no point. No matter what she said there would only be one result. So she just sat there, hoping that he would say something to prove her suspicions wrong. That didn't happen though, instead she heard three tones indicating that the call was ended and just like that she began sobbing, leaning forward and covering her eyes.

Juno gently placed the phone on the table and leaned forward, wanting so desperately to cry but quickly remembered that she wasn't by herself, and the fear of getting caught crying overwhelmed her enough to wipe the tears from her eyes and suck it up, squeezing her eyes shut as she stood up and turned around, picking the phone back up. She used her forearm to wipe away whatever she could and then walked back inside where she saw Joel walking from the kitchen to the living room, looking over at her with a cup of coffee as the entire room now smelled of it.

"What did he say?" he asked and then noticed the look and redness in her eyes, making him stop walking over to the living room and freeze. Juno simply shook her head and went to hand his phone back. For a moment Joel felt furious, wanting to know exactly what was said over the call. If she was implying what he thought she was then there was a bastard out there that didn't deserve a daughter, and the thought of this girl of all girls being that daughter made it even worse. He hadn't known her for long but Joel could tell Juno was a sweet girl, and the thought of anyone being mistreated or neglected, let alone someone so innocent, made him rage. This moment only lasted a moment however as there was a knock at the door, making the two look over instantly as Joel's instincts kicked in.

"Behind the couch!" he whispered quickly as Juno's eyes widened. She did as she was told and crouched down, feeling a familiar sick feeling in her chest along with hot chills that she hoped she would never have to experience again. Meanwhile Joel quickly set the coffee down on the counter and silently but quickly went to the recliner next to the couch where his holster sat. When he got it he removed the gun from it and held it downward with both hands, going into a combat stance as he went over to the door and leaned against the wall, checking the peephole. As he did though he sighed, lowering his guard as he stopped holding his weapon with both hands. Juno took notice and poked her head over the couch, watching as Joel placed the gun on the kitchen counter.

"Who is it?" she whispered. Joel simply shot her an annoyed smirk and opened the door where Joseph stood, wearing jeans, a navy shirt and a black and blue checkered flannel. He seemed to be looking to his right, his head snapping back to the door as it opened, causing him to smile as he laid eyes on his partner.

"I brought pizza," he said as he held up the box. It wasn't long before Joel and Joseph were sitting on the back porch with their own plates, Juno inside in front of the TV as she ate. Joel had been concerned about her not eating and hoped that she would, not knowing when the last time she ate actually was. Luckily he didn't have to beg her though as she took a slice along with a paper plate and ended up sitting on the couch with a cup of soda next to her thanks to Joseph also bringing a two liter. Joel however did not want any to drink and instead watched as Joseph poured a cup after Juno and now sat drinking it as Joel looked out into the woods.

"Thanks… I didn't know what I was gonna feed her if you didnt come along" he said, breaking the silence as Joseph looked over at him with his cheeks puffed out, filled with cola. He swallowed and then placed the cup on the table between them.

"No problem. No offense but… I figured she hadn't eaten anything since we picked her up" he explained as he now reached for his plate, his mouth almost watering. "But if you think… that I was gonna order a whole pizza and not steal a slice? Oh buddy, you'll be seeing me go for seconds'' he added before taking a bite. Joel only looked down at his own plate as it still sat on the table, trying to work up the stomach for it.

"Yeah… I wanted to pick her up something last night but… she wasn't hungry. Can't say I blame her. I'm glad she's eating now. Poor thing must be starving" Joel replied. Joseph then looked over as he chewed.

"What about you? You gonna eat or do I not have to get up after all?" he joked with a slightly full mouth. Joel simply shrugged, sitting back in his chair and looking out into the woods again. Joseph took notice and swallowed his food, thinking of something to say to change the subject.

"You know Maggie didn't want me to leave the house? She's worried about something happening to me after she heard about what happened. Have you turned on the news?" he asked. Joel shrugged as his eyes darted over to him.

"I had it on but I didn't watch it. Why?" he asked, knowing that nothing about it could've been good.

"They released information about the shooting. They knew it was the mafia and they were talking about whether or not something like it will happen again. I think that's why Maggie was so worried. I didn't want her talking about it in front of Liz though, the last thing she needs is worrying about whether or not her dad is gonna come home" he explained. Joel thought about what he said, rolling ideas around in his brain.

"So what was the verdict?" he asked as Joseph took another bite of pizza. He tried to chew quickly but didn't really want Joel to wait so he tried to answer him at the same time.

"They said they don't know. It's sort of why everyone's in a panic. The idea of something like that happening again is just floating around. Nothing is shut down or anything but… everyone seems to be pretty cautious. I mean we haven't had anything like that happen in what… twelve years? It's all been under wraps this whole time" Joseph answered as he again set his plate down and then grabbed his cup. Meanwhile Joel rubbed his eyes.

"You know… we had that threat come from Albert. We know he's coming after her and he's got pretty much a whole army to do it. I guess I'm just worried that… I'm not gonna be able to protect her. I mean I took her in so that she would feel safe and so it wouldn't be so obvious where she is but I don't know if she actually feels safe. Not sure if she is either to be honest" Joel admitted. Joseph stared for a moment, not wanting to come off any type of way but he had to ask.

"So… at risk of sounding like an ass, why do you care so much? Like on a personal level? You could've just left her at the station and she'd be just as safe" he explained. He wanted Juno safe as well but just wanted to make sure that Joel wasn't falling back on old times. But deep down Joseph knew that he was.

"I guess something about her just… spoke to me. Like she needed help and somewhere to stay. Sure she did but… on a more personal level. I felt like she felt more alone than she actually was and honestly I think I know why. Just before you came here I asked her to call her father. I don't know where her mom is but she could get ahold of her dad. I didn't listen in but I left her to talk on the porch, and when she came inside she was clearly crying" Joel explained before Joseph asked a question.

"Did she say why?" he asked. Joel shook his head.

"Pizza guy came" he answered, letting Joseph know that he basically interrupted him when it happened. He simply bit his lip in response, picking up his plate and taking another bite. Joel then added "I'm probably gonna ask her in a bit. Before that though she should get more situated. If she wants to stay here longer I'll let her but her only other option is the police department. Either way she'll need her clothes. We talked about sending someone to get them but honestly I think it would be better if I just went with her"

"That's a great idea," said Joseph. "Take her out for a bit. If you want her to feel safe or at least get her mind off of things then take her out for a bit. I think it'll do both of you some good" it took a moment as Joel pondered the idea but he thought overall it was fine.

"I guess. Just going there and coming right back-"

"No I mean… I mean after you get her clothes take her to do something. It doesn't have to be big but ask her if she wants to do anything and if she does then take her to do it. I feel like it'll help clear her mind" Joseph explained. Joel however shook his head.

"I don't know about that. From what we know the mafia itself is after her and… they gotta be combing the streets looking for her. The longer we stay out of public the better" he explained.

"I'm not saying it'll be long. Hell, I'm not saying she'll even want to do anything and if she does I feel like it'll be small. Just ask and even if she doesnt the offer will make her feel more personal with you. Personal equals safe emotion-wise" Joseph said and then stared at Joel as he glared back. "Just take the kid out for a bit. Get her some fresh air. Like I said, it'll be good for both of you. Either way you gotta head out and at that point you might as well do it" he added. Now Joel thought about it, pondering the idea but ultimately deciding against it. In order to keep her safe he had to stick with his gut, and his gut was telling him to keep her safe at all costs.

While the two talked about that, Juno sat inside watching the first thing she could find for background noise which would even slightly entertain her. It didn't take long but she ended up finding a sitcom. It wasn't important in the end though as she mostly focused on her food, eating her slice quickly and finally taking a sip of her drink after it was almost gone. Still hungry she got up for another, grabbing a second slice from the pizza box and then going to sit back down. She ate around half of it before beginning to feel full, guilt also coming along for the ride as she wondered how she could eat given her situation. She felt as though she was being disrespectful, mindlessly eating instead of remembering those at the diner, and since she felt sick thinking about it before she felt even worse now, making her cringe and set the plate down on the coffee table.

Like last night Juno came face to face with the photo, studying it as she leaned forward. She wanted to ask Joel about it but knew she would most likely not. Given his nature and living situation Juno could tell it was most likely a sore subject. Most likely a divorce even though when she thought about it, Juno remembered that she could see a wedding ring on Joel's finger, making her think again about it all. As hard as it was for her to accept she knew it was none of her business and shook her head, sitting back into the couch and staring in the direction of the TV. she wasn't watching it just thinking. thinking about everything. As much as she wanted to forget or at the very least stop thinking about it, all she could do was replay everything in her mind again, and now with a full stomach the thought of everything made her gag.

Juno bit her lip, trying not to throw up, and attempting to tune it all out. No matter how hard though all she could think of was those events. Those screams and gunshots played in the back of her mind to the point where she swore she could hear them faintly, and with her eyes closed it only made her think that she was still there waiting for her turn behind that counter. With that thought she gasped, opening her eyes and looking around the room. "I'm safe… I'm not there, it's over. Joel saved me. I'm safe… I'm safe…" she thought but then remembered what she heard as she hid in Johnny's office. Was she safe?

Juno remembered what he said as she hid. Most of it went in one ear and out the other since she was just hoping he wouldn't walk in or hear Joel get shot. She remembered her heart skipping a beat as the door swung open and the sound of sirens grew louder. For a moment she thought she was dead, as if all that hiding was for nothing but as her eyes focused on the uniform of the brown wolf that opened the door she felt relieved, but even so she couldn't have dropped the panic so soon. Because of that she hadn't even thought of what was said until now. He was coming after her, and she had no idea who "he" was. She thought Joel might know given how protective he was. All she got was that she was now in witness protection until he was caught. "Why would that involve me though?" she thought until she realized that she was indeed remembering correctly. He was coming after her.

Juno laid down into the bedding that was still on the couch and whined, feeling her heart sink and her stomach turn at the thought of not knowing what the future held in store. "Was he going to get me? Was he going to kill the others to get to me? When would this be over?" Juno thought. That was the worst part. Not knowing when this was gonna be over. This made her shiver, suddenly feeling cold as she took the quilt on the other end of the couch and bundled up, her eyes looking over to the TV again and then to the left outside the window, watching the two still conversing. "And Dad… maybe I should have told him that I was still in danger. Maybe then he would have cared" she thought but decided against it. His lack of response to her being in a shooting showed her everything that she needed to know, and for that she shed a tear, feeling alone once again.

Part of it all made her angry. She had tried so often to connect with others but to no avail. No matter how close she got they always shunned her away and at the time she was upset but once she began to blame herself it only made things worse. "Not everybody can be an asshole. Maybe I'm the problem" she thought. She just… never felt loved. "Maybe it would be best if I died," she thought. In her mind she had no one. Sure she had a few friends but would they matter in a few years? Probably not. They would leave her one by one to do their own things, never looking back and falling out of contact, limiting themselves to the same few people they were now faced with for the rest of their lives. At best they would find a decent partner but for Juno she was beginning to think it was impossible for her. After her friends left she would have no one. She would be nothing more than a tumbleweed blowing in the wind and the thought of that scared her much more than dying. "But at least… no one died for me"

Again Juno thought about falling asleep right there but decided against it. She had slept enough for one day. Instead she got up and walked back down the hall to Joel's room to check on her phone. It was at fifty-two percent but more than that the time caught Juno's eye. 1:52 she sighed and unhooked the phone, bringing it out into the living room just as the pair walked back into the house, Joel coming in first as Joseph followed. Instantly the two made eye contact as Joel called out to her.

"Hey, kid. How ya feelin?" he asked. Juno took a moment to think of a response but ultimately shrugged.

"I'm fine," she answered.

"Get enough to eat? I made sure to get the best pie in town" Joseph said as he slid the door shut. Juno politely smiled and nodded.

"I did, thank you" she said, not mentioning the sickness it brought to her. Joel noticed the half eaten slice on the coffee table and figured she might just be full, but as long as she ate he didn't mind. He then walked over to the reclining chair and sat down, leaning forward in an attempt to let Juno know he wanted to tell her something. She took note of his body language and sat back down on the couch as Joseph brought the paper plates back to the kitchen to throw them out, sitting down to her left shortly after.

"So Juno… me and Joseph were talking about the situation and figured that if you want we can go pick up your clothes and come back so you can get cleaned up. That is if you want to stay here, I understand if you don't" Joel explained. Juno pondered the idea but was a little confused.

"We?" she asked. Joel nodded.

"Me and you. Joseph is probably gonna go home after this" he said. Juno looked to her left again as Joseph smirked.

"Try not to miss me too much, '' he said. She let out a small laugh to be polite once more and then turned back to Joel. he had done nothing but care for her so far, and while she had hardly known him long she didn't really see as though she had much choice. Still though as of now she felt safe with him.

"Okay" she said. Joel nodded once more.

"We can head out whenever you want. But I would imagine that you would want to get changed soon" he said.

"Yeah. A change of clothes sounds nice. That and a shower… if you don't mind me using yours" Juno replied. This time Joel shook his head.

"Don't worry about it. I've got towels and washcloths you can use. And as soon as this is all over you can go back to your old life" he said. It sounded nice but not long after thinking about it, Juno realized that no matter what it would be incredibly hard to go back to anything after what happened. Even so, Juno thought that a nice hot shower and fresh pair of clothes sounded like heaven.

"Thank you" she said with a smile, making the two others in the room do the same. Joseph gave her a pat on the back and then stood up.

"Well if you guys are gonna go then I'll head out. Just remember to change your uniform Joel" he said as he went to the door.

"Yeah, yeah" Joel replied as he followed him out. The two stepped out into the cool air once more but as Joseph stepped out onto the porch he turned around.

"And… think about what I said. I really think it'll help" he added. Joel didn't respond, instead his eyes darted downward to his left as he thought about the idea again. He was brought out of that as Joseph gave him a pat on the shoulder and then turned around once more, fishing for his car keys as he made his way to his car. Once inside Joel turned around, seeing Juno throw on her jean jacket again. He smiled and shut the door momentarily to grab his holster and gun which was still on the counter from before. After putting them on he looked up at her.

"Ready to go?" he asked. Juno nodded.

"Yeah" she answered. From there on out it was a silent walk to the car and drive as the entire time Joel pondered the idea of asking Juno if she wanted to do anything just to make her happy, but the thought of keeping her safe was what was most important. The only time they talked was when they made it to the school and saw the various police cars and security around the school when Juno made a comment. "Is it… okay for me to be here?" she asked.

"Yeah. Besides, we'll be in and out. Do you mind if I come with you? It's best if I escort you" Joel said as Juno nodded.

"Doesn't bother me" she said as Joel pulled into the nearest parking spot. When they got out Juno looked around, comparing everything how it was now to before. Whereas before you would see a few people walking the campus, along with couples and some friend groups, now there were very few and mostly replaced by security and police officers. It was very odd to see. Most likely there was a curfew or an emphasis on getting to class as quickly as possible.

Juno waited for Joel to come around to her and then began walking in the direction of her dorm room. It was only when they got inside did Juno begin to notice other people staring at her. Immediately she hated it, feeling like a victim and knowing that there were others talking about her. Then she realized that it wasn't just a few others or groups. Most likely the entire school knew and most likely blamed her for probably being on lock down. She tried her best to ignore it along with the constant whispering as they finally made it up the stairs and to her room. As she got out her key however Joel called out to her.

"I'm gonna stay out here" he said. Juno turned to him, not turning around fully but instead just enough to face him.

"Why?" she asked.

"Girls dorm," he joked. "Besides, I should keep an eye out just in case. I'll be here just take your time" he said. Juno nodded but as she turned the key he had one more thing to say having taken notice of everyone's reaction to her and how she took it, her ears falling flat as she seemed to shrivel up a bit and huddle as if she were trying to hide herself. "And Juno? Don't let what anyone else thinks get to you. They don't know what they're thinking" he said, having remembered a thing or two about his school years. Those were some dark lonely days.

Juno offered a nod and then stepped inside. Being careful to shut the door as Joel put his back to it. Once it was shut Juno left it unlocked just in case he wanted to come in, but stayed facing the door as she shuddered, thinking of all the stares once again. "Is that what I am now? The fucking victim?" Juno thought angrily when she realized that she herself didn't even know the story, or what the rumors were, and as much as she wanted to believe there were no rumors she knew that wasn't the case, especially with college kids and their freedom on the line.

"Juno?" Juno heard as a familiar voice called out to her, making her ears perk up and her current thoughts drop. She then turned around to see Jenny standing there in a white t-shirt and jeans. She looked as though she was about to head out but was clearly just interrupted.

"Oh uh… hey jenny" Juno said awkwardly, not really knowing what else to say. Jenny simply stood wide eyed, not knowing what to say herself.

"We thought… when we heard what happened and you never came back we thought… what happened?" she asked. She seemed more worried than anything else but on top of that relieved and honestly Juno seemed to warm up at the idea that there were people in her life that cared. She didn't know where to start when it came to answering that question however so she stood as nervous as Jenny, holding her own hand as she looked down at the floor.

"I… don't really know how to answer that. I can't stay here long though. I'm in witness protection and can't really be seen here" Juno explained. Jenny nodded.

"Alright well… don't let me stop you" she said begrudgingly as she stepped to the side. Juno could tell she had a lot on her mind and wanted to stick around but didn't want to be awkward. It didn't really work though as Juno walked past her to her room where she ended up following her as she called out. "But wait. Where are you staying? And what do you mean you're in witness protection? Witness protection from what?" she asked as Juno entered her room and reached up into her closet for a bag. She then began taking clothes from it as she began to explain everything.

"Yesterday during my shift some people broke in and killed most of everyone inside. When police showed up it was only one car and so they had to split up. One inside, one out. The one inside was out numbered and lost his gun which I used to take out one of them and now… now they're after me… I think" Juno explained without even realizing how crazy she sounded. So crazy in fact that Jenny just laughed nervously.

"What?" she asked. Juno stopped packing for a moment to look over at her and then shake her head.

"Long story. I just… I just can't stop thinking about it… everybody who died… all of them were so nice… some so young…" Juno said out loud as she stopped in her tracks, thinking about Alice again. She then wiped a tear from her eye and continued packing.

"I was watching the news. They said it had something to do with the mafia. I didn't know if that was true or not though" Jenny said. Juno simply kept packing as she talked.

"Yeah… that's right. Joel hasn't told me that's the case but I think that's right" she replied as Jenny furrowed her brow in confusion.

"Who's Joel?" she asked.

"The cop taking care of me. Last night after everything happened he offered for me to stay with him instead of the police station. So far he's… nice. Awkward but nice. Honestly he uh… he seems a little worse for the ware" Juno explained without making eye contact as she realized she was running out of room in her duffel bag. "Can I use your bag?" she then asked.

"Oh, of course" Jenny answered as she disappeared into the hall to go to her room. Meanwhile Juno grabbed more clothes as well as other things such as perfume and brushes. When Jenny came back she placed her duffel bag next to Juno's and watched as Juno began to place things in it as well.

"Thanks. I'll give it back to you. I promise" she said.

"It's no problem. I trust you… but what do you mean worse for the ware?" Jenny asked, not only because she was curious but concerned. It didn't seem right for a grown man no matter the context to ask a young college girl to stay with him for the night, much less more.

"He's clearly an alcoholic, little messy and… I think… something happened to him… something bad" Juno said, thinking about everything she saw in his house so much to where she stopped packing and sat on the bed. Those pictures… the ring… it didn't add up. Jenny sat down next to her friend and faced her as she looked down at the floor in thought. "He's got photos of what looks like his family in his place. His living room, bed room… but there is no family. At first I thought it might have been a divorce but… he still wears his wedding ring" Juno explained. After pondering what was said to her Jenny asked.

"Do you feel safe with him? He isn't weird is he?" she waited for a response which Juno instantly said.

"No. Not at all" she laughed, thinking about the gestures from everyone. "His partner is really nice. German shepherd and… one of those guys that just didn't ever really grow up but still keeps the charm, and then his other partner Jessica. I didnt talk with her much and when I did I was a little shaken up but… I can tell she's really nice. Motherly type… and if others like that trust Joel then… so do I. Plus he really has been nothing but nice and caring to me. I don't know why he offered to take me in, and I know it's barely even been a day but… I'm really glad he did" she explained. Jenny seemed convinced but still…

"You have your phone on you at all times right?" she asked. Juno finally turned to her with a smile.

"Yes I do. Don't worry, you can message me whenever you want" Juno replied which made Jenny laugh.

"Well I did yesterday but…" she smiled when Juno's smile faded.

"You messaged me?" she asked. Jenny simply kept her smile and said nothing, causing Juno to check her phone and look into her messages where sure enough about two hours after the incident saw a string of texts from not only Jenny but everyone else as well. Especially Jonah… Jonah… "sorry… I guess I was just-"

"It's okay… I can't imagine what you went through" Jenny said, causing Juno to think about it again, her ears perking up as she heard those distant gunshots and screams all over again.

"I was so scared…" Juno cracked, covering her muzzle as she thought about it. She then felt a hand on her back as Jenny attempted to comfort the poor wolf, leading her to squeeze her eyes shut and suck up whatever tears were trying to force their way out. "You know sometimes… I feel like I'm still there… like I'm waiting… not to be rescued but for one of them to finally find me and… just wanting to leave… and the worst part… the worst part is that I can only think about leaving… not running to anyone. Me… the only one in there with no one to run to, no one to love me got out while everyone else who did died" Juno said, beginning to tear up again. "There was this girl… Alice… she was new… only sixteen. She told me she was working to help her mom out and now… her mom had to hear that news… and not only that but I know like everyone else she could only think about going home and running into her mothers arms… so when they found her and I heard her scream it wasn't a cry of terror… it was a cry for help… from her mother… from her mother…" Juno sobbed as she leaned forward, feeling the arms of Jenny as she pulled her into a hug.

"I'm sorry" Jenny said simply, being stuck on saying anything else as she simply sat on the bed rubbing Juno's back.

"Why me? Of anyone that lived, why was it me? It should have been anyone else-"

"Hey… don't think like that. Look at me" Jenny said, getting up and kneeling in front of Juno to get eye level with her as she placed her hands on both of her shoulders, looking into her eyes as Juno's were flooded with tears. "You are just as important as anyone else, and the fact that anyone died in there is horrible. I'm really sorry you had to see what you saw-"

"I saw them… I heard them… her face… she had no face, Jenny!" Juno cried. "She had no face…" again Jenny pulled her friend into a hug.

"You're wrong… you do have others that care about you. You just have to see it" Jenny said, the words sinking into Juno's brain as she sniffed, trying to stop her tears. "You're no less important, and one day you're gonna see that"

"How? I don't even know what I wanna do with my life-"

"You'll figure it out. But for right now…" Jenny started, breaking the hug and looking Juno in the eyes again. "Right now you gotta worry about this. You'll make it, I know you will. One thing at a time alright?" Jenny said with a somewhat reassuring smile.

"If it wasn't for Joel I'd be dead" Juno said in almost a whisper. Jenny's smile faded as Juno continued to sniffle. Her face then hardened a bit.

"You'll make it through this okay? You'll do it and come out on top. You said you took one of them out?" Jenny said, making Juno a bit surprised.

"Yeah… but-"

"Then you're gonna take out the other fucker coming after you. I mean… is he coming after you?" Jenny asked, dropping her act at the end.

"I don't know," Juno answered. Jenny sighed and stood up, letting go of Juno's hands. Juno looked up and saw Jenny begin to help with the packing.

"Look, I'm not good with this stuff. But just know you have someone to talk to whenever you want. Just hit me up and we can talk. You'll be fine. This'll probably blow over in a week and things will get back to normal" Jenny said but like Juno thought earlier, no matter how normal things were that day would always be at the back of her mind. Now Juno stood up, taking over the packing as Jenny stepped back a bit.

"Thank you," she said.

"Of course. I'm… I'm really glad you're alright" Jenny replied, making Juno stop and look at her for a moment.

"Thanks… it means a lot… really" she said, finishing up and then zipping her bag and grabbing both of them.

"Oh, I'll take one. I'll walk with you to the car too" Jenny offered as they began walking to the door.

"Thanks but… Joel will probably take it. He's right outside" Juno replied. Jenny simply stopped reaching for one of the bags and continued walking with her friend.

"Alright well… just remember to message me and… I'll tell Sheila I talked to ya-"

"Where is she now?" Juno asked, suddenly wondering about her absence. Jenny smirked.

"Remember that party last night? I think she spent the night with Corey" she explained, making Juno's eyes widen.

"Corey? Corey cunningham?" she said, making Jenny laugh and nod.

"Crossed off the list, and she'll have a new goal by next week" she smiled, crossing her arms.

"Gotta give her credit. She knows what she's doing" Juno joked as they made it to the door when Jenny went to open it, Juno's heart dropping as Jenny continued talking as she did.

"Yep. Maybe she can give you a few pointers. Finally give that cherry of yours a little pop" she smiled and turned, following Juno's eyes to see Joel turn around and look at Jenny who now seemed embarrassed as she laughed nervously, stepping next to Juno. "uh… hey… you must be Joel" she said. Joel simply chuckled.

"Yeah… you ready to go?" Joel asked, turning his attention to Juno. she simply nodded which led to Joel reaching his hands out to take both bags. Kind of as she figured. "Nice to meet you" he said to Jenny and then began walking away, expecting Juno to follow. She went to say a quick goodbye when Jenny beat her to it. Only she didn't say bye,

"Holy shit, Juno. you didn't tell me he was hot-"

"Shut up," Juno laughed, giving her a playful shove.

"I'm glad you're okay" Jenny then said again. "I'm always here if you need me"

"Thanks" Juno said, giving her a hug and then parting ways as she waved goodbye, going back inside the dorm not long after.

Once on the road again the ride had again been silent. Joel, driving as Juno rested her muzzle in her hand as she looked out the passenger window, planning on simply going on her phone once they got back to Joel's, but also feeling just a little more closer to her friends, something she never felt she had back in cherryington. Sure she had her friends but… when she left did they ever bat an eye? No. it only pushed Juno further away from being social to the point when she did get more roommates, she barely spoke. Jenny and Sheila thinking Juno was a tad bit weird until they convinced her to sit with them one night. In their mind they wanted to include anyone into their group, especially if it was their roommate. Jenny specifically however picked up on something off as she was often bullied in elementary school so she knew the look. It was no wonder Juno had grown to like her more over the two.

"So that girl seemed lively. Is she more of a friend or just an acquaintance?" Joel asked, breaking the awkward silence. Juno seemed a tad bit surprised that he did but gladly replied back.

"She… I'd consider her a friend. A close one too. We were talking about everything and… sorry I took so long" Juno said, making Joel feel as though she saw him as impatient.

"Oh I didn't mean that. You're fine. I'm sure there was a lot to discuss. It's why I stayed outside, '' he replied. Juno thought of a response, not really sure what to say.

"Well thank you. She uh… she finds it really sweet that you're taking care of me" Juno replied, making Joel chuckle again. His small smile faded though as he thought about earlier. He had to ask about it.

"Juno… could you… tell me what happened on the phone this morning?" he asked, making Juno stiffen up.

"Well… it's just that… My Dad and I never really had a good relationship growing up. He didn't want anything to do with me and that's why I ended up alone a majority of the time. Once it was off to high school I just didn't hear from him. I remember telling him when I wanted to move to America and it was one of the few times he helped me" Juno explained as Joel gripped the steering wheel in pure anger, so much so that it was audible.

"A father should always be there for his daughter… What did he say on the phone?" Joel asked.

"That… not much. He asked if I was okay and… when I said yes he pretty much just hung up" Juno answered. Joel looked over at Juno which she saw, making the two make eye contact for a brief moment before he looked back at the road.

"That's bullshit. The fuck's his problem?" Joel asked, wanting to beat the hell out of him if he ever saw him. Juno didn't reply which Joel took notice to, and when he glanced back saw that Juno seemed more sheltered. He was scaring her, and the thought of that saddened him. Quickly he calmed down, his rage being replaced by guilt before he asked again. "What's wrong with him, Juno?"

"My Dad… he was in love with my mom. My mom was in love with him. From what I was told the two were inseparable and that lasted for years until one day… one day they decided to have a pup, so they did… convinced that it was conceived with love and joy and that when it was born they would be the perfect family. When it happened though… Mom didn't make it… something went wrong and… she didn't come home after… Dad was convinced that it was my fault and… blamed me… hated me. It was always bad enough, never meeting my Mom, knowing how much love she had for me before I was even born and yet… it just hurt more knowing what… could've been. My grandparents raised me so… I never really had a dad either which was fine since he always shut me out anyways. He was never abusive but… there was never any love. But thankfully when my grandparents finally did pass I was old enough to where I didn't have to depend on him. I guess that's why I've always been so clingy. I just… never really had anyone. I had my grandparents, sure but… it doesn't replace the love of your parents… especially when you know the context. They were the ones who told me after all. After that things just seemed… I don't know… the only good memory I have with my Dad is… I don't even know what to call it. I was really young, still in my crib and was just… crying. Maybe I was hungry, maybe I was scared but… one day he didn't ignore me, he just came in, took me in his arms and… cried with me. I still don't know what that meant but… it's a memory I just… I don't think I'll ever forget it" Juno explained sadly as she turned to the window again.

Joel didn't really know what to say. He turned to his right and just saw Juno looking out the window saddened by the memories that he had just forced out. None of it excused how her dad treated her, but at least he had the bigger picture now. If it was his daughter he would love her no matter what. Still though he felt horrible for making her relive something that was none of his business, on top of recent events. He then noticed a rain droplet on the passenger window as it began to drizzle, running down Juno's saddened reflection in the window as Joel turned back to the road, wondering if there was a way to cheer Juno up. Mostly as an apology for what Joel saw as making her talk about something she didn't want to. Joel thought and thought, finally remembering what Joseph had said earlier. "Just take the kid out. Even if it's for a little bit" and with that thought he ran some things through his head. "Come on Joel. go with your gut. Do what's best for the girl. She may be unhappy but at least she's safe. She has to stay safe. This time had to be different. What are you doing?"

"Hey… how about we go somewhere else… get out for a while. What do ya say?" Joel offered, turning to her again and hoping that he could get her to smile. Juno thought for a moment. She didn't really know a place where they could go, that was until she remembered the string of texts she had gotten from her crush.

"Well… there is one place" Juno replied after turning to Joel.

"Just name it," he replied, hoping that he was doing the right thing. Of course this place Juno ended up naming was the same discount store that Jonah worked at. She had hoped that he was working today but even if he was scheduled the possibility of him not being there was high due to his concern over his friend. Still Juno figured it was worth a shot and found herself growing excited that she was going to see him.

Joel park not too far down the parking lot as a decent amount of others seems to be shopping. If there was an estimate it would have been about ten spots down from the front of the store. Joel seemed a bit confused as to why Juno wanted to go to not only a discount store but one of this type. It just seemed to be one of those places that bored most people if the decor and clientele wasn't any indication. He got his answer quickly though when they walked in and he saw Juno turn to the main front counter where the same cat from before stood doing her job. She seemed surprised to see Juno, seeming as if she wanted to ask her so many questions but couldn't as she was in the middle of a rush. Instead the interaction was brief.

"Hey Cici" Juno greeted, leaving Cici jaw dropped and wide eyed.

"Oh my gosh… Juno… uh… Jonah?" she asked to which Juno nodded happily with a slight wag of her tail. "Um… bedding… come back when you're done. I wanna see how you are" she said. Again Juno nodded and then turned to leave as Joel followed.

"I was wondering why you wanted to come here. Is this the boy you mentioned earlier?" he asked as he put the pieces together.

"Maybe" Juno smiled as she continued to walk happily towards the back of the store where bedding supposedly was. Joel chuckled to himself, feeling happy for the wolf as she seemed to be lightening up.

"Do you want me to leave you alone? I won't be far behind'' Joel offered, wanting to give her some privacy but not wanting to completely leave her as he still had a job to do. He would have liked to leave her like he did in the dorm but this situation was different. It was more public and prone to being found, and while Joel was on top of it he was still extremely nervous as the two being out in public put everyone else in danger as well.

"You don't have to. I just want to catch up for a bit and then we can go" Juno explained, causing Joel to nod even though she couldn't see it. Just then the two reached the back corner of the store and Juno had begun to check each aisle, checking right again and again between rows when she finally spotted Jonah with his back to them, sweeping with his ears flat on his head. He seemed to be upset about something which Juno figured would be the case, but she was gonna make it better once he found out she was okay. Still it was nice to see that he cared so much. She never figured she meant so much to him.

Juno stood at the end of the aisle, turning to look up at Joel who gave a nod and a smile which then led to Juno turning back to Jonah and began walking over to him. As Joel watched he kept his slight smile, feeling a certain warmness in his heart as the teen walked over to her crush, something he would never get to experience his loved one do.

"Hey Jonah" Juno said suddenly once she was about three feet from him. His heart dropped and his eyes widened once he recognized the sweet and soft voice. He turned, making eye contact with Juno and seeing the gorgeous smile spread across her face. Jonah then rested the broom against the aisle and without hesitation practically lunged at her, pulling her into a tight hug and catching her off guard. She giggled. "Nice to see you too," she added. Joel suddenly felt guilty for watching, as if he was intruding so he decided to take a step back, keeping close but also having an ear out as he looked around to see if anyone stood out.

"I thought you were dead. I tried texting you but-"

"I know. I know. I'm sorry. There was just… so much going on" Juno replied as she began to feel bad again for leaving Jonah to imagine a terrible fate.

"I thought I would never see you again" Jonah then said as he kept his eyes closed, enjoying the continuing hug. Juno then brushed her hand up and down his back in an attempt to comfort him.

"Neither did I. Have you gone on your break yet?" she then asked. Jonah broke the hug, looking into her eyes and shaking his head slowly with a smile.

"No. I haven't. But you bet I'm gonna take it now. Oh Juno I'm so glad you're safe" he said. Again Juno giggled, feeling good that someone cared about her so much. It almost made her feel as though she had the confidence to tell him about everything else. Before she could even start however Jonah took her hand and walked with her over to the back room, letting go once they made it. "I'll be right back" he said, leaving to clock out right after. Juno then turned to face the rest of the store, doing the same as Joel and looking around for anyone who stood out. Just like him though she found nothing but that didn't keep her from looking around. At one point she questioned why she was even here. She could have called Jonah or sent him a text, but in her eyes she really wanted to see him and would just be in and out. Besides, what were the odds that they were looking for her here if at all? She then noticed Joel come around one of the corners, finding her and locking eyes from a distance. She simply smiled and gave him a thumbs up, making him laugh lightly and carry on. When Jonah came back he turned to Juno with the same smile, her looking into his eyes with the same expression. "So… you hungry?" he asked.

"Honestly no. but even if I was we couldn't leave anyway. There's a lot that I have to tell you" Juno answered but that only left Jonah confused.

"You can't leave? What do you mean?" he asked. Again Juno looked around and simply saw an older woman putting cookies in a shopping cart. Nothing unusual. "Here. follow me" he said, taking her hand again. Before Juno could say anything she was pulled into the back room, looking around the place where boxes seemed to be stacked high and stocking carts stood half full. It all seemed very bizarre but mostly because Juno knew she shouldn't be back here for multiple reasons.

"Uh. I shouldn't be back here. Won't you get in trouble?" she asked. Jonah shrugged.

"Eh, screw em. They're gonna treat me like shit either way. Besides Britney always brings her bubble butt boyfriend back here" Jonah replied as he walked deeper into the back, still holding Juno's hand until eventually they reached a door which Jonah click a small lever on the handle and then pushed it open, Juno wincing as she half expected a fire alarm to go off as the door said would happen but nothing did. Jonah noticed her sudden wince and laughed. "Don't worry I turned it off. It was just a shortcut for some fresh air" he said, taking a door stopper next to them and wedging it between the door.

Now outside Juno could see that there wasn't much out here which was expected as it was the back of the store. Nothing but a small loading dock, some broken down shopping carts, the road looping around the large shopping center, some trees, and a highway off in the distance. As she studied the blank and lonely scenery Jonah sat down on the somewhat wet asphalt which had been wet with the light rain that was now falling. He had let go of Juno's hand to do so as he assumed she wouldn't want to sit on the wet ground but was proven wrong as she sat down next to him, taking his hand again and making him smile once more.

"You can be out here, right?" he asked. Again Juno looked around, looking at the distant highway and making note of the cars.

"Yeah. this should be fine" she answered. She hoped that Joel knew where she was so that he didn't worry, but she found him to be relatively smart so her standing by the back one moment and then not being there the next would be pretty easy to connect.

"So… I know it might be rude or weird to ask but… what happened?" Jonah asked. Juno looked over at him, hesitating and then sighing as she rested her head against the brick wall and looked up to the cloudy sky.

"Honestly Jonah… I've told so many others what happened already. Do you mind if I take a rain check?" she asked. He turned to her and saw her looking up and then nodded.

"Sure. I don't mind" he answered, feeling as though he was intruding. He then started twiddling with his fingers as he faced forward, looking up at the highway, Juno following his gaze not long after. "You know… whenever I'm here at night and you don't show up… because you know they like to schedule me two to ten, I like to come out here around eight or so when the sun goes down and… just look out onto the highway. I know it isn't much but… the lights to me are just so beautiful. It makes me feel like I'm looking at city lights ya know? And there's just something about that. You know the feeling of looking at something beautiful and it just makes your stomach feel queasy? It's like that. It kind of makes me question things about my life. Whether or not I'm doing the right thing… whether or not I… have a shot…" Jonah explained, at first trying to change the subject but accidentally diving deeper. Juno caught a couple of things from that, wanting to delve deeper into each of them.

"Wait… when I don't show up? Do you wait for me every day?" Juno asked. Jonah seemed to tense up at that question, his eyes widening a bit as he had accidentally revealed something he wasn't supposed to.

"Maybe" he answered. The two shared a laugh which lasted a moment before Juno looked out once more, trying to picture it all.

"I mean… I'm sure it does look beautiful. The lights from the cars and street lamps, and being by yourself it must be… almost meditative. Maybe one night I could join you and we can look out together. It'll probably be really nice" she said. Jonah simply smiled.

"It… would be. I'd love to do that with you. Depending on the weather it only gets nicer as well. Back in December it was snowing and… it was all just so peaceful. Sometimes I like to listen to music while I do it and for the most part it's relaxing but that time I remember listening to Christmas music specifically" Jonah explained which made Juno feel closer to him mostly because she felt as though she was getting to know him more and more.

"I didn't take you for one of liking Christmas music-"

"What? I love Christmas music. Just you wait. Come December I'll finally have my car and I'll be playing Christmas music starting from november to mid january" Jonah said, causing the two to laugh again. "Maybe we can do something too. Head into the city and see some real lights" he added, making Juno's ears perk up. "Was he inviting me out?" she wondered. There was a moment of awkward silence before Jonah suddenly stood up. "Wait here" he said as he walked back inside. It kind of made her feel uncomfortable as she was now alone, making her check left and right constantly but it only lasted around a minute before Jonah came back outside with a bag of goldfish crackers and a four pack of soda in glass bottles, one of them missing as he had drank one before. He sat down in the same spot and then took two bottles from the carton, offering one to Juno.

"Thanks" she giggled, accepting it and popping it open.

"Uh-huh" Jonah smiled as he popped his open as well, taking a sip and then taking a handful of crackers and eating them. He then placed the bag between the two of them and looked back out onto the highway, taking another swig of soda. "So you said you couldn't leave here… why not?" Jonah asked suddenly. Juno swallowed her sip of soda before answering.

"Well… you're gonna think I'm crazy but… did you see that wolf behind me when I came up to you?" Juno asked. Jonah simply looked confused.

"No, not really," he answered.

"Well long story short he came into the diner as it was being attacked and… he saved my life. I wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for him. He came in, took out a few of them but couldn't get one of them which… happens to be one of the higher ups in the mafia who… is… after me now" Juno explained before taking a long swig from her bottle. Jonah however looked at her even more confused.

"This a joke?" he asked.

"No. I wish it was. He took me in for the night and we went back to my dorm to pick up my clothes and were supposed to be getting back but… I wanted to see you. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to be keeping a low profile but I figured they wouldn't think to search here. What would a couple of stupid teens be doing at an elderly discount store?" Juno laughed. Jonah laughed with her for a moment but couldn't help but feel worried for her.

"So wait… the mafia's after you?" he asked. Juno closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"I don't know. We don't have any signs of it but… I heard him make his threat and the police aren't taking it very lightly. I don't know what's being done to find him but… they put me into witness protection and it was either stay at the station or live with my escort for a bit. He's a nice guy. Older… caring… I talked with Jenny about him earlier and well…" Juno began but didnt know how to finish.

"What did she say?" Jonah asked. Suddenly Juno had an idea, making herself laugh.

"She called him hot," she answered. Again the two laughed.

"Hot? What does he look like?" he asked.

"Well you'll see him. He's in the store but… I don't know. He just seems really messy. He's nice but… clearly an alcoholic but… a sad one. He's definitely got some stuff to him that I don't know" Juno said, not wanting to get into it again. Jonah took notice of what she was saying but only one thing mattered to him.

"But… you'll be safe… right?" he asked. Again Juno looked over at him and not wanting to lie she shrugged.

"I don't know. This is a really big deal Jonah and… I know Joel is gonna give it all that he can but… is it enough? One guy can't take on the whole mafia. Oh no, and he had partners that will help him with this… they're all so nice and if anything happens to them… you know I was thinking last night that… maybe it would have been better if I just died… not because I want to but… no one else would be in danger if I had-"

"Don't say that… just don't say that… I know it may seem weird but… I really like you Juno and… if anything happened to you it would just… it would hurt" Jonah confessed, not really knowing what to say after as did Juno. Instead she just sat as the two looked into each other's eyes, Jonah feeling awkward and nervous as Juno felt warm and cared for. It still felt so surreal to her.

"Jonah… if I did die… then you would be fine. Sure it might hurt but eventually you would move on… start your career… meet someone… start a family" Juno listed as Jonah shook his head. To him it seemed odd but he felt as though he could do none of those things without her.

"No… just no… the scripts I've written and work I've done… even if they took off and I became successful it would mean nothing if you weren't there to enjoy it with me" Jonah said, leaving Juno to wonder if this again was a hint at something more, but her fear from previous attempts at romance quickly crept back. "There would be no one to enjoy the lights with either" he added, leaving her to feel cared for again. Suddenly rain began to pour a bit harder, making Jonah look up at the sky as Juno had done moments ago. "It's starting to come down harder. You wanna go back in?" he asked.

"No. I don't mind it. Besides I know how much you love the rain" Juno replied just as a low thunder roar sounded overhead. "And thunder," she added. Jonah sighed.

"Yeah… when I thought you were gone though I just couldn't stop looking at it and it just made me feel… somber. Honestly if you would've died that day I don't think I would've ever liked the idea of rain again" he explained. Juno didn't really know what to say to that. She still couldn't really believe that she meant so much to him. She had tried so much in the past that now it seemed too good to be true. She didn't want to push her luck but even so couldn't resist to do what she did next, leaning to her left and resting her head on Jonah's shoulder which like when he hugged her just moments ago, took him by surprise but just like Juno quickly warmed up to it as the two stared at the distant highway together, the road now being soaked with rain as the headlights from the cars spread over the road reflecting off of it as their windshield wipers worked at a medium pace.

"I'm still here, Jonah," Juno said. Jonah closed his eyes, being grateful that she really was here and proceeded to wrap his arm around her shoulder, keeping her close.

"I'm glad, promise me you'll keep it that way" he said, trying to keep himself together. Juno hesitated, keeping her eyes closed as she tried to convince herself that what she was about to say was the truth, and while it might not have been in her mind, at least it would make Jonah happy, even if it was just for a moment.

"I promise" she said, The two then sat silently for a while, staring out and not saying a word, just enjoying each other's company until Jonah's alarm went off, signaling that he had to get back to work. This entire time Juno was right about Joel putting two and two together, the only difference being that he thought the two were in the break room hanging out.

Joel had considered waiting by the doors leading to the back room but decided against it, instead keeping an eye around and seeing who came into the store. He didn't capture much but ended up eventually tuning into someone not too far from him seemingly checking something out on one of the shelves. He turned and noticed a jaguar close by looking at the candle selection. Instantly it seemed off given how he didn't seem like the type given what he was wearing. A white shirt, black jacket and jeans. That and he seemed to be looking at more feminine scents. Even worse was when he pulled out his phone for a moment and then took a glance over at Joel, quickly looking away once he realized Joel was looking right at him, as if he made a mistake. This made Joel take another look around before approaching him. Instantly the jaguar took notice, taking another glance and then back at the candles. Joel didn't really know what he was going to say once he reached him but didn't have to worry about that as he was beaten to it.

"Sorry. Just a habit I guess" he said. Joel seemed a little taken aback but decided to play it cool.

"It's fine. I do the same every now and then. It's always awkward" he replied. The acquaintance laughed lightly.

"Yeah. it is. I always hope that they just don't notice" he said. Joel nodded and began looking around at the candles himself, going from the ones that the jaguar was looking at which were along the lines of roses and peaches, to the ones closer to him which were more masculine such as mahogany and campfire. Again he found it off but who knows? Maybe he was shopping for his mother or something.

"I get that. So you shopping for your mother or something?" Joel asked. The jaguar smiled and shook his head.

"No. just trying to get some things for myself. Soap, candles, maybe a new pillow or two. Stuff I need" he answered. Joel took note and began pondering. "Maybe he just likes feminine scents" Joel thought but then took into account that this guy had no shopping cart, something probably needed to carry things such as candles and pillows unless he liked the challenge. Joel then reached for a mahogany candle, picking it up and turning to his right.

"I always liked this scent the best. Always a hit with the ladies" he said, trying to appeal to him but also looking for an excuse to turn to him and study him, specifically the inside of his jacket but came up with nothing. The jaguar turned to Joel and took the candle, studying it and then looking up at him again.

"Yeah. it is a good scent. Are you on break or somethin? I don't mean to be rude but you're in uniform" he said. Joel chuckled and switched sides, walking around him to get to his right, the whole time the jaguar's eyes were glued to him.

"Long story. Let's just say I have business here and was looking for something to pass the time" Joel replied, looking into his jacket again. Just like last time there was nothing, but now his gaze was followed, making the jaguar look down in confusion and then back up.

"Hopefully nothing to do with me" he said, reaching up to put the candle back. Joel went to say something but immediately as the jaguar reached up his jacket opened up a bit, revealing more of his shirt and pants where Joel could see a handgun hidden and concealed. Quickly Joel took action, reaching for his weapon and putting it to the jaguars back and making him gasp. "What are you doing?" he asked in a panic.

"How many of you are there?" Joel asked, looking around as he prepared to take action. He had to find Juno and get the hell out of here as fast as he could, but as his eyes darted around he saw no sign of her. However the other customers around seemed relatively normal but then again so did this guy. If he hadn't made his few slip ups, Joel would have never even approached him. However now that he did and was onto him he was unsure, and the thought of that was panicking.

"What are you talking about dude? Are you crazy?" the jaguar asked in a sweat, his eyes widened as he kept them on Joel.

"Listen to me. You lie again and I will pull this trigger so you understand-"

"No… please dont. I have a family, please! My mom is gonna wonder where I'm at and… my sisters-" he went to say when Joel quickly reached into the jaguars jacket and pulled out the pistol, making the jaguars eyes now lock onto the sidearm and look nowhere else.

"I'm not gonna ask you again. How many of you are there, and where?" Joel asked angrily. The jaguar's expression softened, almost to the point of looking expressionless as he looked back at Joel. he hesitated but eventually gave him somewhat of an answer.

"Too many for you to handle, Joel," he said. Joel snarled, feeling anger rise as he fought the urge to strike this guy right then and there.

"How the hell do you know my name?" he asked, causing the jaguar to smirk.

"We know everything. Including how you operate, so don't even think about pulling that trigger. You do that and we have others throughout the store set to open fire at the sound of a gunshot. If they hear it then everybody in here dies, and you'll be to blame" he explained. Joel suddenly felt trapped, trying to think of his next move very carefully but thought of something.

"If you know everything, then why wait here to make your move and not come where she's being held?" he asked. This wiped the smirk from the jaguars face, causing Joel to feel assured a little but also think about how much he was bluffing. He couldn't risk it. He believed that there were others in the building but was curious as to why nothing had happened yet. Surely they saw the interaction going on, unless he was just a scout set to let the others know the target was found… hence the phone. "How much time?" Joel asked. Again there was a short period of time before he got an answer.

"Not long," the bastard answered. Meanwhile Jonah had punched back into the system, getting the usual clocked in message from the computer as he put in his ID numbers as Juno stood behind him, leaning on the chair and looking at the screen.

"That half hour always goes by so damn fast," Jonah complained. Juno giggled as he got up from the chair afterwards and the two made eye contact. "We should really do something again soon. It's been awhile since we hung out outside of work" he added. Juno felt joy as her tail began to wag, thinking of the possibilities of doing something normal for the first time in what felt like awhile.

"I'd like that," she smiled.

"I can tell" Jonah laughed, pointing at her tail as he began walking out of the room and over to his locker, putting the crackers and last soda back in.

"Oh shush" Juno replied as he put his things back in and then walked with her back out to the sales floor. As they did Juno figured maybe he could say a quick hi to Joel before they parted ways, and then once the whole thing blew over they could hang out. The thought excited her more than it should have. Maybe it was because she would get some friend time, or maybe it was because it would be somewhat normal, or maybe… just maybe she could get some real romance after all. "Before I go, do you want to meet the man?" she asked. Jonah glanced over at Jonah and shrugged.

"Sure, why not? I've always wanted to meet an action hero" he answered. Juno snickered as the two made it out to the sales floor and Jonah looked around, Juno taking notice as his expression saddened.

"What is it?" she asked. Again he shrugged.

"What we talked about the other day. I just feel stuck. Hopefully this script sells and I can start something, get out of this shit hole and… finally have my mom read it" he listed.

"She hasn't read it?" Juno asked, surprised. Jonah shook his head with a smile.

"No. I wanted her to read it once it sold. So she could be more proud. Honestly though I have my doubts that it will. I mean that career is so hard to find success in and… what are my odds? You know? If that fails then I don't know what I'm gonna do so hey… at least we're in the same boat, right?" Jonah explained. Juno kept her smile as she nodded, swallowing another sip of soda.

"Worst comes to worst, we'll figure something out together, but you're not gonna be stuck here. You're too talented" she said as she turned the corner to see Joel down the aisle talking with someone.

"Let's hope so. To taking off" he said, holding his glass bottle to her. She laughed and clicked hers together with his.

"To taking off," she said before the two took a sip. "Anyway… that's him" she said, pointing at Joel slightly by raising her bottle again.

"That's him?" Jonah asked.

"Yep" Juno answered as they began walking over to him. They stayed silent until they were about ten feet from him and then Juno called out to him. "Hey, Joel!" she called. Joel then looked up to meet her eyes and just like that the jaguar went for his gun, going to grab it which Juno and Jonah instantly saw now, the guns being hidden by the jaguars body as they were walking up, but now with the struggle it was obvious as he went for his sidearm. The two wrestled as Juno and Jonah jumped back wide eyed and scared, not knowing what to do as their hearts raced. The jaguar had his hand on the gun, trying to move it to Joel's chest as he struggled, the jaguars thumb on the trigger as he readied to fire once the barrel touched the wolf fighting back.

On his feet Joel thought quickly and with his other hand still holding his revolver aimed it at the jaguar as his hand was around his wrist, putting all of his strength to grab his pistol, not paying attention to the other hand. Quickly Joel moved the pistol down, throwing the jaguar off guard and letting Joel put the revolver to his chest and quickly pull the trigger, causing a small blood spurt as the jaguar instantly lost his fight, and fell to the ground in defeat. Jonah and Juno stood dumbfounded as they watched him hit the ground, not knowing what to say when they heard a series of gunshots near the front of the store, making Juno cower as she began backing away.

"No… no not again!" she said to herself. Meanwhile Joel quickly holstered his revolver and took the pistol, looking up at the two.

"Hide! Now!" he yelled. Instantly Jonah grabbed Juno's hand and ran back to the back of the store where they just were, planning to run out the back as Joel stood behind, checking the ammo on the magazine which was full. He then put it back and cleared the chamber, holding onto it for more ammo as he rounded the corner, making sure Juno was safe. He felt better as he saw the two run safely in the back and then turned back to the corner of the shelf, ready to peak once he got hold of the situation. He needed to buy the two time and then join them.

Joel heard footsteps running up to him followed by gunshots and slower footsteps. There was someone around the corner. He took into account where they were and estimated the position before quickly poking his head out and taking a shot. "BANG BANG BANG" one member down as he shot him three times in the chest. Like last time it was another damn lion wearing a suit. However as Joel looked up he saw three more all taking notice of him once one of them called out.

"It's that cop! Find the girl!" he yelled to the others.

"Shit" Joel muttered as he took cover, switching his position by moving down to the end of the aisle and taking cover at the end cap. He listened for footsteps, his ears on high alert as he tried to pick up on anything. It wasn't so hard given that the shots had stopped, meaning that either everyone was dead or they let the others live to focus on finding Juno. That wasn't going to happen though. Joel wouldn't let it. In the meantime he had three others on him and he would have to deal with them before meeting the others quickly. No telling how many there were or coming.

As Joel planned his next move Juno and Jonah had made it to the back, Jonah running towards the exit as he kept Juno's hand in his the entire time. He was met with some resistance though, making him stop and turn back and look at her.

"What is it?" he asked in a panic. He just wanted to get Juno out and as far away from here as possible.

"Joel… there's no way he can take them all on his own" she cracked.

"What are we supposed to do? It's his job, and if he really did what you told me he did the other day then there is a chance. Besides… you made me a promise" Jonah said, making Juno's eyes lighten up a bit. She then gave him a nod and the two began running to the exit again. Just as they began to pass the second entrance though the doors swung open and two more lions wielding pistols stepped inside, looking around and making the two quickly take cover behind the nearest table and crouching down.

"She might be back here. Find her and fast while that wolf is distracted. I'll check back here. You go that way" the two heard one of them say, nor did they get a direction as to where they were going as they split up. Jonah looked over at Juno who looked horrified and put his finger to his lips, and then slowly went to peek around the corner to get a look at where the two were going. As he did however he felt a hand on his shoulder, making him turn around again to see Juno shaking her head.

"We have to get out of here" Jonah mouthed and then took his peak as he listened for footsteps. Luckily the two were walking away from them. One deeper into the back, and the other towards the breakroom. If they were gonna make their move it had to be now, same as Joel who still stood at the end cap listening. He heard the footsteps slowly approaching and realized there were only two pairs of steps. He tried listening for the third and just barely heard someone reach the end of the aisle to his left. They were surrounding him.

He saw the gun first as it poked around the corner and took his shot as the gunman turned the corner. "BANG BANG" he fell against the shelf and slumped downward when he heard the other two.

"Surround him!" he heard one of them yell. Joel thought fast, moving to his left where he saw at the end of the isle another one move out in the open, knowing there was another moving on his left to come from behind and flank him. He took more shots. "BANG BANG BANG" making him also drop to the floor as he shot as well, just barely missing Joel as the pain of being shot made him flinch downward. Immediately after Joel put all his strength into throwing himself at the shelf on the right as he heard footsteps running on the other side and managed to make it fall on top of the last guy. He yelped out as Joel looked around, making sure he was clear to pull his phone out and dial Reyes. He kept his eyes darting around as he kept checking himself while the gunman squirmed under the shelf trying to escape. Thankfully he picked after two rings.

"Joel? I'm getting calls about shots-"

"Yes. they're here. It's them, no confirmation if the leaders here. Get here fast" Joel said before hanging up and running to the other side of the shelf. There he saw the gunman just coming out, noticing Joel who aimed his gun. The gunman laughed.

"You think you got it all figured out don't you? What's the plan? You gonna do this forever?" he asked.

"Albert, is he here?" Joel asked in a panic, continuing to look around. He didn't get an answer, however, just laughs.

"I dont gotta tell you shit" he said. Joel didn't have time for this, he had to get to Juno. "So what now? You gonna arrest me?" he then asked. Joel didn't answer, instead just firing a round into the gunman's head and moving to the back, not before hearing commotion at the front. He took a peak at the entrance and noticed six more gunmen entering the store, this time instead of pistols however they had machine guns. Likely because they no longer had to conceal themselves. Joel cursed again and moved to the back as fast as he could, hoping to meet the others.

As Joel had his shootout Jonah kept Juno behind him, moving up and looking around, listening for any slight sounds. He heard nothing and turned to Juno as the two continued to stay low.

"Come on" he said quietly and went to move forward, never letting go of her hand. The entire time he kept his mind on the goal and was trying to move as quickly as possible. The two made it past the breakroom and kept moving, Jonah gaining more confidence as the exit was just down the hall which is where he messed up as he was heard picking up the pace. As the two moved suddenly the gunman from the breakroom lunged out, elbowing Jonah and knocking him down and then quickly whipping Juno with the butt of his pistol, knocking her to the ground. He looked between the two and laughed.

"And here I thought this was gonna be rough" he said as the two struggled to get up. "The boss is gonna be real happy with this one. Maybe even get me a bonus. Come on, girl" he said with somewhat of a southern accent as he holstered his gun and then reached for Juno. hearing this Jonah leaped up, clinging to the gunman's back and trying to get him away from her. Immediately the gunman stood up, struggling in an attempt to get Jonah off of him, running backwards and slamming him into the wall where Jonah fell to the floor. The gunman then turned around in a rage as he looked down at the cowering puma. "You're really gonna die for her? You're on the wrong side, boy! Fightin for a fuckin canine!" he said.

"Fuck you" Jonah spat which resulted in the gunman grabbing him by the throat and lifting him up by it against the wall.

"I'll have your tongue, boy!" he said as he unsheathed a large hunting knife. Jonah shivered, feeling his heart race as he tried to get away, breaking a sweat as he felt helpless. "There ya go. There's the fear I like to see. Still wanna fight for her?" he asked. Suddenly Jonah stiffened, holding his ground as Juno began to get up, gaining back her surroundings as she now had a splitting headache. Due to Jonah's lack of an answer though this made the gunman enraged. "Too bad" he said before quickly piercing the knife to the hilt in his pancreas, making him grit his teeth and yell in pain.

"JONAH!" Juno screamed, looking for something to help him out and quickly found her soda bottle on the floor in front of her. She must have been holding onto it the whole time without realizing it. Not only that but must have dropped it. Juno got an idea and quickly grabbed it as the gunman laughed, slitting up to the side of Jonah's lower stomach, causing blood to drip down and spray just a tad.

"Aint that some rich meat!" the gunman mocked just before Juno smashed the bottle over his head, shattering it into pieces. She wasn't done however as she then quickly shoved the pointed edge of the broken bottle into the gunman's throat, making him yelp out and drop Jonah. "You… BITCH!" he yelled as he turned to her, holding his bloodied neck before lunging at her, wrapping his hands around her throat once they were on the ground.

Juno struggled, trying to fight back but was too powerless to fight off the large lion holding her down. She gagged and clawed but to no avail, meanwhile Jonah took notice, working up the courage to fight back in any way he could but had nothing. Nothing but a leg gushing blood with a weapon that was still inside him. Suddenly Jonah got an idea, a really painful one but couldn't think about it as the two were running out of time.

Quickly he grabbed the handle of the hunting knife and pulled, gritting his teeth and yelling as he tried to get it out as fast as he could. Every single inch however was another piercing pain in his side but he had to fight through it. So he squeezed his eyes shut, continuing to yell through gritted teeth as the cold steel seemed to stick to his warm flesh, gripping it and only letting go as it sliced its way out, but it would be worth it if he could just get it out. Blood leaked violently as Jonah pulled, finally nearing the tip of the knife until finally he had managed to tear it out, only causing his body to bleed more but couldn't focus on that.

Jonah stumbled, trying to get to his feet but the first step he took caused him to fall. He felt dizzy as his vision blurred in and out but fought through it. Again he stood up and again he stumbled towards the two and this time managed to reach them, and with all his strength plunged that same knife into the back of the gunman's neck, causing him to raise his head and yell out, letting Juno go as he stood up once more to turn around and face Jonah. He went to reach for the knife, stumbling backwards until he tripped over a stack of boxes and turned to fall face first into them in defeat. Jonah huffed, breathing heavily as Juno coughed, trying to get back to her feet. Jonah offered her a hand which she accepted. He grunted but managed to get her up as she looked downwards.

"Jonah…" she said, looking at how bad his wound was. He could barely walk.

"I know… come on… we gotta go" he replied, taking her hand again and limping towards the exit. Suddenly the two heard the door open behind them, making them quickly turn around to face it as Juno gasped. Jonah wasted no time, going to grab the knife handle and ripping it from the now dead gunman's neck. Again he stumbled, trying not to lose his balance as he took Juno's hand again and moved to cover, ready to pounce for whoever came around the corner. He wanted to make a run for the exit but knew that he couldn't in his condition. He had to play things smart.

Now he waited, Juno behind him as blood continued to pour down his body. He breathed heavily, trying to keep quiet but every time he held his breath he felt as though he were gonna pass out. He just had to be ready to fight. So he held his ground, protecting Juno for whoever came out, listening for the quick approaching footsteps until finally someone came around the corner to check it. Quickly Jonah lunged at them, swinging the knife quickly but because of his shape they were easily able to step out of the way quickly, making Jonah fall to the floor. He couldn't stay down though. He had to fight so he went to get up but was instead helped up, not in a threatening way though, in a helpful way. As his vision came back, Jonah saw that it was Joel who was helping him up and instantly felt a wave of relief.

"Joel!" Juno said. Joel noticed her and then wrapped Jonah's arm around his neck, helping him up.

"Come on. We gotta move quick before-" Joel went to say but just like the two heard moments before, the door had opened. This time it was accompanied by voices who were planning out a sweep. "We gotta go. Come on, buddy" Joel said as he lifted Jonah, beginning to move as fast as he could. Meanwhile Juno grabbed the hunting knife which was now left on the floor and held onto it just in case.

"Exit… there's an exit…" Jonah said weakly as he pointed ever so slightly in the direction of it. Joel went to move in the direction but was stopped as Jonah slumped forward, losing consciousness for a brief moment as he continued to lose blood.

"Come on, buddy. We gotta keep moving" Joel said as he went to lift Jonah up again, this time with no help from him. Not only that but there was a bloodtrail that was coming from him, leading whoever was looking for them right to them.

"Just… go," Jonah said.

"No. we're not leaving you, '' Juno replied. Joel knew however that the chances of him getting out right now were slim. Running would be impossible because of his state, and limping with him would cause the gunmen to catch up, not only because of the pace but because of the blood trail. Joel had to think fast and thankfully the corpse from before gave him an idea. As fast as he could Joel set Jonah down against some boxes, leaving Juno wide eyed as she watched him.

"Joel, no" she said in a panic, not wanting to leave him.

"Listen, we have to leave him but he's gonna be okay" Joel said quickly before taking some empty boxes and quickly tossing them over Jonah. As he did he gave him instructions while continuously checking behind him as the squad of gunmen had now moved into the breakroom if his ears served him right. They only had about thirty seconds to be out of there. "Listen to me, buddy. Stay here, don't make a sound and someone's gonna be here to come get you. Just stay awake, and stay quiet. Okay?" Joel said quickly. Jonah simply nodded weakly, closing his eyes. "Hey. stay awake'' Joel repeated as Juno looked on with tears in her eyes. This was a nightmare. Part of her didn't know if any of this was real, it was all too terrible. But if Jonah could just hang on until backup arrived then all would be fine.

Jonah gave another nod and then Joel placed one more box over him, making sure he was hidden and then turning to Juno. he took her hand and then as fast as he could went to run in the direction that Jonah had pointed them in. just one hall and they would be free. They were on the move, running forward but just as they went to turn the corner, the gunman's partner from earlier ran into them, expecting to find his partner and tell them he saw nothing from the outside but instead ran right into the target.

Instantly he went to shoot at Joel, spraying between the two in a panic and making them split up as Juno hid behind a table to the right and Joel split off to the left. Joel then heard someone call out from the break room as the squad of six now quickly made their way over to them. So without even thinking, Joel moved from cover to shoot the remaining rounds into the final gunman who stood in the hallway, the gunman not expecting Joel to be so reckless and so didn't even get off a shot before falling to the floor.

Now out of bullets, Joel tossed the handgun to the side and took out his revolver, looking towards Juno who stepped out from the table to his right and went to move down the hall but quickly took cover as gunfire rained down from behind them. Joel taking cover behind a shelf as Juno took cover behind the same table, this time on the other side. Now though they were split up as the six gunmen all knew where they were, firing on their position as Joel now had to think again. Honestly though he had no idea. Running would get them shot, surrendering would get them shot, fighting would get them shot as there were too many at once and they were closing in on the two. Leaving was however an option for him and only him as the shelf provided enough cover to move down the hall and out the exit, but he wasn't leaving Juno who couldn't make it to him without being shot.

With no ideas Joel looked over at Juno who was still behind the table, looking into his eyes with the same expression as when he found her behind the counter. He had to do something. If he didnt then… then…

Each gunman looked at each other, keeping their guns up and moving forward slowly. Their plan was to take out Joel, take Juno, and leave. Now with everything so perfect it seemed impossible to fail. Especially with everything on lock which was proven true when Joel tried to peek and shoot, only to be met with three AKs shooting at him, causing him to instantly get back into cover. He shook, trying to think of something desperately until he heard yelling as Jonah lunged at one of them taking their attention off of the two just long enough for Juno to make it to Joel as he noticed, giving her the instruction to move. As Jonah lunged he didn't make it to any of them, instead being shot instantly from one of the rifles and causing him to fall wincing in pain.

"JONAH!" Juno screamed as she watched in horror as the six looked over Jonah, a pool of blood forming around him as he opened his eyes one final time to look back and meet Juno's. She teared up, looking at the scene unfold as he simply smiled, wanting to tell her how much she meant to him but hopefully the saying was true. Actions speak louder than words. She was gonna get out now, and that's all that mattered.

Jonah was met with multiple shots to his chest as Juno watched, wanting to help him but was grabbed by Joel as the two ran down the hall and towards the exit, running as fast as possible when they stopped, hearing one final shot that made Juno whimper. Again Joel pulled her hand until finally they were outside where it was now pouring, and while they were out they still had to get away from the group that was no doubt chasing them. Joel looked left and right but saw nothing but straight shots with no cover. He thought again and again before pulling Juno behind a nearby dumpster and crouching behind just as the six ran out, checking the area.

"They couldn't have gone far. Come on!" one of them said. Joel then poked his head out, watching them as they made their way down to the left. He then looked over at Juno, making sure she was okay but… she wasn't. She was a sobbing, shaking mess. He then felt multiple things. Anger, sadness, and sorrow. But he also had an idea as he saw Juno still holding the large hunting knife. He reached his hand out, making Juno look up from the concrete as she took notice and then up at Joel's eyes. He gave a nod, letting Juno know to give him the knife which she did.

He took it and then crept out, moving towards the gunman in the back of the group quickly as the rain covered his footsteps. Eventually he made it and with his anger intact stabbed the knife violently into his throat and quickly grabbed his AK, spraying the remaining gunmen left to right until they were all down. He wanted to do more, he wanted to do so much more to them but… at least Juno was safe. When Joel turned around he saw Juno walking up to him, tears in her eyes as she was at a loss for words. They both were, and while Joel wanted to say something he was interrupted by the gagging of the gunman who he had stabbed just seconds earlier. Again it enraged Joel. just the audacity to act as though he was the victim. He wanted to tear the knife out and stab him again and again but decided against it, instead opting for a shot to the head.

"Joel…" Juno whimpered, grabbing Joel's attention. She was trying desperately to hold back tears and break down but was failing miserably as her teeth were gritting and tears ran down her face. "J…Jonah" she sobbed. The two made eye contact as Joel wanted to comfort her but knew there was no point. She then went to turn around and go back in the building when she felt Joel grab her shoulder. Again she turned around, this time to be met with Joel who was shaking his head, and with the oncoming sirens approaching she finally began to break down.

The ride back was as quiet as ever. Joel had wanted to say something but every time he opened his mouth decided against it. He was furious, not even at the gunmen but at himself. He should have listened to his gut. If he had then Juno wouldn't have been through all that again, there wouldn't be another crime scene and most of all… that kid would still be alive. Joel took multiple deep breaths trying to calm himself down but they only ever worked for a brief moment as thoughts continued to cloud his mind. When they entered Joel's house he had put the bags on the floor by the door and shut it, Juno wondered in as if she was lost and kept her head down. Finally Joel had worked up the courage to say something.

"The bed is still yours if you want it… clean yourself up if you want, if not… I understand" Joel said. Juno said nothing and picked up one of her bags, walking to the bathroom. Once the door shut Joel had decided to go and get a change of clothes himself, walking into his bedroom and grabbing something more comfortable. Afterwards he walked out, listening to the shower run as light sobs came from the bathroom as he passed. Once in the living room he sat on the couch, waiting for Juno to be done as he squeezed his eyes shut, feeling his anger rise again.

"Damn it!" he yelled through gritted teeth, punching the couch. Just then his phone rang, grabbing his attention. He pulled it out of his pocket and looked at the ID. It was Jessica. He answered the phone and put it to his ear. "Yeah?" he said dryly.

"Hey Joel" Jessica greeted in a saddened tone. "I heard what happened. The department has been goin nuts and… well you already know it's all over the news… are you… are you two okay?" she asked. Joel took yet another deep breath, leaning into the couch as his eyes moved towards the hall.

"No" he answered eventually. He then heard her sigh.

"You know… Joseph wanted to call you and ask how the kid is but… he's ashamed… he feel's awfully sore about it, says he told you to do it-"

"Jessica, no it… I shouldn't have gone. It was my choice, I messed up. I… Jessica I'm… I'm failing again… Jessica, I'm failing again" Joel cracked as he began to tear up himself. Jessica didnt know how to respond, wanting to comfort Joel and she could only imagine how Juno felt.

"Listen… Do y'all wanna come over? I could fix us somethin up and… I don't know…" Jessica offered mostly because she wanted to help in any way that she could, starting with comforting the two.

"We shouldnt… I dont wanna put you in danger" Joel said, not wanting to leave his house at this point.

"I think you'll be fine. As long as you two stay out of public it should fare well for ya… just think about it for me, okay?" Jessica asked. Joel didn't respond, he just stayed silent as he thought of an answer. Most would think it would be simple but the way he felt right now he couldn't give one. "Joel?" Jessica called.

"Yeah, I'm here," he said. Again more silence.

"You're doing what you can. Do Not compare this to before either it's… it's different" Jessica said. Joel then nodded to himself.

"Yeah… it has to be" he said just as his phone went off again. This time it was his captain, probably wanting a statement. "Jessica, listen I… I gotta go" Joel said. "Rayes is calling"

"Alright… just let me know alright? You know my door's always open" Jessica replied.

"I know… thank you" Joel said, like always feeling cared for by her.

"Of course… bye now" Jessica said.

"Bye," Joel replied before switching calls. "Hey" he greeted.

"Hey… how's the kid?" he asked.

"Not good," Joel answered, again feeling terrible about the whole thing. Rayes sighed just before Joel heard a pen click over the phone. "You want a statement," Joel said.

"Yeah… are you okay to do it right now?" Rayes asked. Joel tapped the couch lightly and then leaned forward, preparing to retell everything that happened.

"Sure," Joel said impatiently. He wasn't the only one who was getting a phone call though. No, it was someone who didn't deserve the call she was getting, a call that most feared, and furthermore a call that Juno had thought about up until this point, feeling sick to her stomach every single time she did. Jonah's mother had heard about what happened at his job, and how most of everyone there was unharmed. She had paced back and forth, holding out hope for her son who wasn't answering the phone, hopefully because he was being questioned. Eventually though when that phone rang and was picked up on the first one she spoke quickly with a beating heart that matched the pace of her words.

"Hello?" she greeted. She was then met with a woman on the other end who greeted her professionally.

"Hello, this is Amalia calling from the Atlantic County medical examiners, is this Julia Threadson?" she greeted back, making Julia's heart drop once she heard who was calling.

"Medical examiner? Is my son dead?" she asked, stopping in her tracks and instantly beginning to bite at her fingernails. Tears swelled up in her eyes as she felt a hot chill, making her feel as though she was going to pass out.

"Are you alone?" Amalia asked with a crack in her voice.

"Yes! I live alone with my son, IS HE DEAD?" Julia asked more frantically as she felt her heart beat faster and faster, thinking it was the worst feeling in the world but sadly it was nothing compared to what she felt next after hearing one simple word.

"Yes" she heard from the phone. At that moment she screamed… she cried… she lost…

Later that night the storm only grew as the rain fell harder and the thunder grew louder. Joel had been on his fourth glass of whiskey, finally showered and changed as Juno stayed in his room, tossing and turning as she attempted to sleep, not because she was tired but because she didn't want to be awake. She didn't want the heavy feeling of sickness and grief as she replayed the events over and over as she had done with the diner.

Sadly Juno had gotten her wish, finally falling asleep and having the same thing happen as the previous night, only this time much worse. Worse than the night before, and worse than the actual memory. She dreamt that she was being dragged away from her friend as he screamed for help, getting absolutely gutted by the six gunmen as he made eye contact with her the entire time. His voice and cries just all seemed so real as he cried out.

"JUNO! JUNO! HELP ME! DON'T LEAVE!" he screamed as she tried to run to him, but it was no use as he was eventually pushed to the floor, one of the gunman then using the same shotgun from the diner to pump it and fire a round into Jonah's head, splattering it and causing blood to go everywhere, the shotgun matching the sound of the loud thunder strike that happened in the real world, waking Juno up and making her think it was all real as she sat up screaming, tears running down her face. She kept at it until eventually realizing that it wasn't real and instead breaking down into tears as the realization set in, wanting to take it all back. Jonah was gone, and to Juno it was all her fault.

Suddenly the door swung open, making Juno yelp out again, her eyes locking on the door as she saw Joel come in frantically, ready to fight anyone who dared touch her but there was no one, and once Juno realized it was only Joel she lowered her guard, continuing to break down.

"Juno? Are you okay?" Joel asked, walking over to her just to make sure everything was okay. He had figured it was but he needed to make sure she didn't see something such as someone outside the window or anything of the sort. He walked over, sitting on the edge of the bed as she cried, wanting to comfort her. "Juno… it's alright… nothing's gonna-" Joel went to say but was cut off once Juno practically leaped at him, throwing her arms around him and making Joel gasp, his arms spread out to avoid touching Juno as hers stayed wrapped around him tightly. Instantly he broke a sweat, shaking as his eyes grew wide as Juno cried into him, causing memories to come flooding back as those haunting memories hit him like a train. They were always with him but now that this was happening, they just seemed so much more real, and that was the worst part as the clouded Joel's mind, taunting him as he kept his arms from touching the crying wolf.

"Lily… is she okay?"

"DAD! DAD!"

"I love you so much, Joel…"

"I promise I'll keep you safe… I promise…"
