The One Who Came Back
Chapter 11: Reception and Disappointment
The representative of the Sorcerer Kingdom was approaching the capital of the Dragon Kingdom in the late afternoon. The reddish glow of the sun on the black structure gave the carriage an ominous air, and its guides did little to improve that impression.
When they reached the massive gate in the wall that surrounded the city, the escort moved forward to inform the captain in charge of security. In the meantime, a skinny soldier came out of his post and walked towards the carriage.
"Security check! I ask everyone to come down to inspect the wagon", stated the soldier nonchalantly, not paying attention to who he was referring to.
"I'm sorry sir, I'm not familiar with such procedures, but I believe there is a mistake, as we are on official mission", declared the imp politely.
"I don't care who you are, everyone must pass inspection sir-", continued the sullen soldier before stopping mid-sentence, at which point he finally looked up from the paperwork and saw who he was talking to.
"I believe it is then polite to inform you that this is the entourage carrying the ambassador of the Sorcerer Kingdom, so this carriage is an extension of the Sorcerer Kingdom itself. If you ever touch it, that touch will be considered an invasion of the Sorcerer King's territory, an act of unjustified aggression, thus constituting a declaration of war. I ask you to rethink your words and consider your next actions", spoke the imp as the Lich and the Soul Eaters began to face the trembling soldier.
"I-I, I, I, I..." – that was all the soldier was able to say before being knocked down by the other five soldiers who threw themselves at him. These were part of the escort that accompanied the carriage during the day and began to drag the unsuspecting man into the guardhouse, from which unintelligible screams came.
Another soldier came out of the guardhouse, enraged and apparently very worried.
"Captain Leonis, Day Officer reporting. Sorry for the inconvenience sir, your presence graces our kingdom. Security will be guaranteed and your passage will be guided confidently by me to the palace. I hope you have a good stay in the Dragon Kingdom and again we are verry sorry".
"Thank you for your concern, Captain Leonis. No fault was committed intentionally and I hope the soldier will not be punished too harshly for merely doing his job, even with obvious inattention".
"Your words will be taken into consideration, sir, and we thank you for your condescension", informed the captain while thinking about how to punish the recruit who almost started a war in his first week of service at the main gate.
"HONOR GUARD, RIDE! ORDINARY, MARCH!", shouted the captain at the head of the entourage.
The carriage rolled through the city as it prepared for the night. Everyone made way for the entourage that now consisted of a dozen knights from the kingdom who followed in front and also behind, fearing that some unsuspecting person would mistake the carriage again for anything less than royalty.
Under the glowing torches, the carriage looked even more sinister. Upon seeing the animals that pulled it, the residents hid in their homes and shops. Looking through the window, they shuddered as they realized who the coachman and his escort were, wondering what kind of terrible creature was inside the vehicle, and what nefarious plans they intended to carry out against the townspeople.
Once inside the carriage, Tuare was pouring Sebas another cup of tea while they unpretentiously ate small lemon cookies.
"Your cookies are delicious, Tuare", chatted the butler.
"Thank you so much, Mr. Sebas. But I believe there will be a reception for you, probably with plenty of food, so there's no need to eat these simple cookies".
"On the contrary, even if there is such a reception, I would not give up tasting your food, even for a feast".
Tuare remained flushed with the compliment. She loved these conversations with Sebas, as the politeness and affection that the butler bestowed on her was her greatest reward, in addition to the fact that Sebas never crossed the line.
She guessed that his code of honor probably prevented him from such attitudes, when in fact Sebas didn't have the slightest experience with the opposite sex or knew anything about relationships. All he knew came from his programming as an NPC and the similarity that NPCs shared with their creators, in this case with Touch Me, who tried to be an example of righteousness and justice. He programmed into Sebas what he had learned about how to behave with a woman during his studies at the Great Library of Ashurbanipal. Good thing he didn't get to read the reserved books in the Peroroncino ward.
When the Great Tomb of Nazarick was transported, a lot changed with the difference between the worlds. In one instance, what was just conventional magic in Yggdrasil, in the New World became high level magic, in the same way that when NPCs gained consciousness in this world, part of their personality came from the programming of their creators who were obsessed with creating a background lore for each character.
Another part of their personality came from what might be called a psychic impression, which is the feeling imbued in an object. This feeling can contain memories and even personality, good feelings generate good impressions, bad feelings generate bad impressions, which leads to evil objects such as murderous cars, vengeful refrigerators and cursed pictures. With the guardians and servants of Nazarick there was something similar, the difference is that they were now alive.
Upon reaching the front of the palace, the captain of the guard proceeded to issue orders to the knights.
"HONOR GUARD, STOP! HONOR GUARD, DIRECTION! PRESENT WEAPONS!", shouted the captain.
Although the carriage windows were made of some unknown material, completely black on the outside, inside they were transparent, thus allowing passengers to enjoy the scenery.
'Better', thought Sebas as he saw the garrisons take up position. Compared to the guard who escorted them down the road and the one who greeted them at the gates, this one was on another level.
Well fed, well equipped and well trained, the soldiers displayed discipline and control. Nothing comparable to Nazarick or even the human guard on E-Rantel, but with a slightly better pattern than they had seen so far in the Dragon Kingdom.
The imp dressed as a horseman descended and positioned himself to the side to open the carriage door.
Inside the palace, a legion of nobles awaited the arrival of the ambassador, all apprehensive about the mysterious figure, however, no one was more nervous than the Queen herself. Pleasing the ambassador and earning the Sorcerer King's favor was imperative, for without it, instead of destroying the beastmen's armies, the Dragon Kingdom would likely end up annihilated, and the Queen intended to do everything she could to make the first option happen.
When the herald announced the arrival of the Sorcerer Kingdom's ambassador, everyone held their breath. When the doors opened, hearts were racing – 'who would be the ambassador? What would he be like?
What kind of monsters have they sent to "devour" the kingdom!?'
At the head of the group was Sebas, followed by Tuare. The nobles craned their necks to try to see the ambassador who must, by some strange custom, be trailing behind.
The Butler of Nazarick walked to the bottom of the stairs, maintaining his usual regal posture. As he approached, he bowed and introduced himself.
"I am Ambassador Sebas Tian, acting as the official emissary of the Sorcerer Kingdom. It is a pleasure to be in the presence of Your Grace Queen Draudillon Oriculus".
"Eh!?", the Queen was able to say.
Embarrassing moments passed. The surprise that the ambassador was human caught everyone off guard, and even the Queen looked disconcerted.
The silence in the throne room was absolute and no one dared to make a single sound, until the Prime Minister took the lead.
"Welcome to the Dragon Kingdom Lord Sebas Tian, we're glad you had a good trip", articulated the Prime Minister.
"Thank you for your attention, Sir Prime Minister, but there is no need to call me Lord, after all I am not a noble, just a humble servant of His Majesty, the Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown".
The buzz became general, whispers and even words began to rise, none of the nobles were happy.
"Not a noble… Just a servant… This is humiliating…", they all whispered.
Queen Draudillon was staring at Sebas. Those present believed that she was also outraged, as she still had said no words, but her silence was for another reason. She knew, she felt, she could feel as soon as the carriage door was opened, the vehicle must have been very enchanted to suppress such a feeling, – 'Fools!' – she thought – 'We are all fools!' – The Queen understood that in front of her was not a man, but a creature that no one in the realm had ever seen, and even she rarely encountered it.
In front of her, bowing, was a Dragon Lord
