The One Who Came Back

Interlude 11

"So, the Theocracy has fallen."

'Yes.'

"We've lost another kingdom to the undead. Soon we'll be without allies."

'To me, it seems like an opportunity.'

"Opportunity? For what? The Theocrats were one of the major forces against the undead sorcerer."

'And now they are homeless and leaderless.'

"As if anyone survived that."

'Ah! They survived; the scriptures are stronger than you think, and smarter. They must have realized the lost battle; now they'll seek refuge. They would never go to Argland, that den of Demi-humans.'

"And you think they'll come to us? How will they find us? We've been hidden for months, constantly moving, and using divine protections continuously. How will they do that?"

'Ah! My sister, they'll come straight to us. They must have as many spies infiltrated here as we have in the Palace of the "Holy King.'

"Wretches, they are spying on their own allies."

'And we do the same. How do you think the information about the fall of Kami Miyako arrived so quickly? Only a fool like Caspond wouldn't use these resources.'

"So, we just need to wait for them to come with their pleas."

'Maybe they'll bring us gifts!'

"That would be great; I'd like a sword." - said Remédios Custódio to the head inside the jar.

The fallen Paladin has been talking to herself since her sister's death, and it seems that things only got worse after she recovered her head. Despite many attempts, the mage couldn't be resurrected due to corruption by the demon.

But a few weeks ago, something incredible happened. During one of her many solitary moments, while performing another monologue, her sister responded, inside her head. This had happened before, but at that time, it was just her imagination.

Now it was her sister's voice, loud and clear, speaking exactly as she would when alive.

Nothing surprised Remédios anymore, so her sister's soul returning as a spirit wasn't a shock. Now, she could talk to her dead sister whenever she wanted. It was during one of these conversations that a small rebellion within her camp was discovered, and an attempted poisoning was thwarted.

The voice inside Remédios's head could be a ghost or her own insight, her subconscious deceiving her mind. It could all be her own madness, but it didn't matter because the advice from her "sister" led her to make good decisions.

After all, her sister would never lie, Remédios affirmed to herself as she caressed the jar with Kelart Custódio's lifeless head.
