"You've been very discreet about your plans tonight," Adam teases, making his way slowly into the bedroom. The wheelchair's only a requirement when he's traveling unless he feels it necessary otherwise, but he's still taking care whenever he's walking around because of how worried Max had been after seeing him in it.

"Well yeah, that's why it's called a surprise," Max says, scooting over to make room for him on the bed. He waits until Adam's comfortable before leaning over and picking something up from the floor. When he sits back up, he glances over at Adam. "Here." He passes over the controller to one of the various systems Adam had had him set up months ago and settles back in against the pillows, shifting around until comfortable.

"What is it?" Adam asks, frowning as Max picks up the remote and turns on the TV, finally allowing the game to be visible. Adam's jaw drops. "No way! Bread & Fred?!" He watches with no lack of glee as the tiny penguins run around the loading screen.

Max sighs and rolls his eyes, looking a little embarrassed. "Yes, way," he mumbles. After adjusting the volume so they can hear the highpitched, tinkly music, he turns to point warningly at Adam. "Do NOT drop me!"

"Would I ever?" he asks, a wounded look in his eyes. They stare at each other for a few moments before cracking up, turning their attention to the screen once they're a little calmer. "Ok, what are we doing here?"

It's a co-op game where their penguins are connected by rope and have to work together to get to the top of the mountain. "What could go wrong?" Max asks dryly as he tries to hop onto a platform, just to fall short when Adam remains in place on the ground below. Max exhales and rolls his eyes. "Adam," he says. "You have to move when I move."

"Right, sorry! Didn't have the timing down, let's try again." So they try... and try... and-

"Shit!" Max says, Adam swinging him precariously around the platform he's standing on by the rope: the goal is to send Max up onto a higher platform, but he keeps letting go too soon and sending him crashing into the ground below. "I swear to god, you're doing this on purpose."

"I'm not," Adam pouts. "It's just not... that easy." Finally he gets it and they land securely on the platform above. "Ok, now, there are two paths, so-" He watches in disbelief as he leaps one way just for Max to leap the other way and the two of them tumble hard back to the ground. "Max-!"

"That was not my fault, why were you going that way?" Max asks in disbelief.

"There's nothing that way though," Adam sputters, waving a hand at the screen.

"How do you know that?!"

"By looking," Adam huffs, shrugging helplessly. "C'mon, let's try again."

They do, for the next half an hour, and although they make some progress, they spend more time falling and smashing themselves on the ground below than actually getting very far up the mountain.

"Well, the penguins were cute at least," Adam comments once Max has given up, too frustrated to bother trying again.

"I guess," he mumbles, propping Adam's leg up on another pillow. "Be right back."

"Alright." Adam shifts, getting comfortable as he exits the video game and begins to channel surf, looking for something a little more relaxing to do. He's just found some romcom marathon when Max returns, his step faltering when he catches sight of the TV.

"Again?"

"Hey, it's a classic," Adam mumbles. "What do you have?"

Max hands over a plate and Adam's eyes widen. "Cheesecake," he says. "With fresh strawberries. Figured it'd make up a little for the repetitive penguin murder we both just experienced."

"There was no murder! Just their little beaks got squished a couple times. They'll be fine."

Max laughs, cupping his jaw and tilting his face up to press a lingering kiss to his lips. "Yeah, ok, whatever you say, baybay." He hesitates. "I know this isn't exactly Valentine's Day since you're going to be traveling tomorrow, but I'm glad we were able to do something."

"Me too," Adam murmurs, resting his forehead against Max's. "Thanks for putting this all together. It's been really nice."

Max smiles and kisses him again.
