It was about a three hour drive from Alexandria to The Sanctuary and Negan talked the whole time. I barely said a word but that guy never shut the fuck up. He can just talk and talk, it was driving me crazy. I was almost thankful to be there once we pulled up to the gates.

"You're gonna love it here." Negan said as he got out of the car. He put his hand on my back and guided me inside. We stood in the main entrance, I could see a lot of people doing stuff. After the war ended and my dad and Negan struck their deal, some of the people who lived here left and went to live at the other communities. Most of them were workers. I was surprised to see there still were some. "So," Negan turned to me, "what do ya think?"

I looked around briefly. "Looks like exactly how I left it." I said. "A dump." I smirked at him.

Negan grinned back at me. "I missed your smart mouth."

Looking around some more, I spotted some people walking around that looked like saviors, then there were others who were doing different kinds of work. "You still have workers?" I asked him.

"Everybody works." He said matter of factly. "Don't you have people who do other jobs and who don't ever go out there?"

I thought about it. We do. There's less skilled people at Alexandria who never go outside the walls. "Yeah." I said. "I guess you're right."

He raised his eyebrows. "Of course I'm right." He put his arm on me. "Come on. Let me show you to your room."

"A broom closet?" I asked with raised eyebrows.

"Shit, baby girl." He turned to me. "We don't do that anymore."

I followed Negan, he took me to a room and stood outside it. "I think you're gonna like this." He grinned at me. I cocked an eyebrow. He unlocked the door with a set of keys. "This," he turned the light switch on and illuminated the room, "was Leon's room."

My eyes widened and I turned and looked at him briefly, then I began looking around. This is where Leon lived. There was a shirt that was balled up on the bed. I picked it up and looked it over. There were some spots of blood on it and dirt. I remember this shirt. He wore it the one day when we cut up apples, he accidentally sliced his finger. That's what the blood spots are. I sniffed it inhaling its scent. It smells like him. I closed my eyes tightly and began to cry.

"Oh." Negan said. "Oh, baby girl." His tone was softer, he walked over to me by the bed. "I genuinely didn't mean to upset you. I hope you don't think that? I really thought you'd like it."

"I do." I nodded and sniffled. "Thank you." I turned my head and saw a painting on the wall. "Everyone back home is acting like he was nothing. But he wasn't nothing, he was everything."

"You must've really cared about him?" Negan said.

I looked back at him. "He was my fiancé." I stated. I held up my finger and showed him the ring.

"I didn't know it was that serious." He said in a joking tone, but I could tell he was only half joking. "I'm really sorry, baby girl. Leon was a good guy."

I nodded. "He was."

There was a brief pause. "Hey, you hungry?"

I raised my eyebrows. "Not at all."

"Well, you gotta eat." He said. "You're way too skinny so we need to fatten you up just a little. And you need to get your strength up." He headed for the door. "Your work starts tomorrow. And don't think I'm gonna go easy on you just cuz I like you." He grinned. I became annoyed. "I'll have someone bring you up a tray." He said before leaving.

Great. I thought. I looked back at Leon's bed where he used to lay. Getting in it, I snuggled up with his pillows and blankets. They still smell like him.

Negan showed me around and told me about my job the next day. Apparently, I had to scrub toilets and sinks. It seemed simple enough, but there were like a million bathrooms at The Sanctuary since it used to be a factory. I was working from sunrise to sundown and by the end of the day, I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

However, nobody bothered me or gave me any negative treatment. In fact, I was treated pretty good here. I got to eat at least two meals a day, which was good enough for me and the food was pretty good too. Not that it wasn't back home, but things were just kind of different here.

I've been here for a month now and just did my job and didn't complain. It's not as bad as it could be…I guess.

The one day, I was cleaning one of the men's rooms on like the main floor and one of the toilets was filled with shit. I gagged as I was unclogging it. As soon as it flushed and all went down, I ran out to get some air.

Then, as I was cleaning the sink, a man walked in. We locked eyes for a moment, then I turned back to the sink. I heard him unzip his pants and looked up, I could see his reflection in the mirror. Is he really going to pee in front of me? The sound of his stream answered my question. He was just peeing in a urinal right in front of me. It made me uncomfortable.

Afterwards, he turned to me and grinned a sickly smile then walked out. He did that on purpose. Why do I get the feeling that this is the start of something bad?

My thoughts turned out to be true. That guy made sure he came in here everyday while I was cleaning. At first, it was just small stuff. Like he would turn around with his dick still out so I could look at it. Or he would purposely brush passed me. He always apologized afterwards, but I knew it was fake.

Then it started to get worse. He started saying vulgar things to me and asking me if I wanted to fuck around. I was getting to my breaking point with him. I hadn't complained at all since I've been here, but I was getting real close to having a talk with Negan about this asshole.

That talk never happened though because I ended up taking care of the problem myself. The day he touched me was when I had enough. Standing at the sinks cleaning, I felt his hand on my bottom. I spun around immediately. "Don't you ever put your hands on me!" I snapped.

He jumped back. "Whoa!" He teased me by bending over so that he was more level with me. "What are you gonna do about it, cupcake?"

Anger erupted inside of me. I couldn't take it anymore. "Ah!" I hit him in the face with my head. He immediately stumbled backwards holding his nose and cursing. While he was recovering from that, I kicked him as hard as I could in his nuts. That made him fall to the floor on his knees. Good thing guys have a weakness. I could've stopped there, but I wanted to show him who I am and why he shouldn't mess with me. Also, I was on a rampage.

I pulled the mop out of the bucket, put it over my knee and brought it up hard on his chin. He lay on the ground unconscious now. I panted while looking at him. That's what you get.

I heard footsteps and turned around. A man walked in and observed the scene, his jaw dropped.

I sat at the table in Negan's conference room waiting for him to come talk to me. I was pissed. I'm in trouble but there's no reason why I should be. That guy got what he deserved.

Keeping my head down, I saw Negan's shoes walk into the room. He walked around me at the table, but I refused to make eye contact. These dumb men always stuck up for each other.

"So," Negan started once he reached the head of the table and leaned over it, "what happened?"

I finally looked up and glared at him. "That asshole had it comin'." I spat.

He widened his eyes and pointed at me. "You really took down that guy by yourself?" He asked me. "That big fucker?"

I shrugged. "Didn't even break a sweat." I put up my nose.

Negan stared at me for a moment, then he broke out in a big smile. "You're dismissed. I have some thinking to do." He waved me away.

"What?" I asked surprised. "I'm not in trouble?"

"Now why would you be in trouble? You didn't do anything wrong." He grinned. I gave him a curious look. "Take the rest of the day off." He said. "You earned it."

"…okay?" I slowly stood up and headed for the door but looked at him again before walking out. He's up to something.

I had a shower and ate a sandwich, then took a nap once I got back to my room. It was nice to get out of work early. My room had a little TV and some movies so I popped one in and started watching it.

I was about halfway through the movie when there was a knock at my door. I hit pause on the remote, then got up to answer it. It was Laura. "Hey." She said with a hard expression. "Negan wants a word. Come on."

My shoulders slumped. I knew he was up to something. I knew I wasn't going to get away with what I did.

I followed Laura down to the conference room again. She guided me inside, then closed the door. Negan and I were the only two in the room. "Well hello." He greeted with that grin. "Don't you clean up nicely."

My curious expression turned to more of annoyance. "If you're gonna punish me, just give it to me already." I shook my head. "You gonna make me work for you for longer now?"

He let out a laugh. "I told you before, you're not in trouble."

I looked at him sideways. "Then what is it?"

Negan just eyed me up and down for a moment, it started to worry me. "What would you say, baby girl, if I asked you to be an unofficial savior?"

I scoffed. "I'd probably look over my shoulder to see if you were talking to someone else."

He laughed. "That's one of the reasons why I like you so much. You know you're skilled yet you act like you're not." He grinned. "People like us have to be that way. You have to pretend like you don't know you're good at something, because the moment you start acting like you are, everyone hates you for it."

I stared at him with the same expression. I understood exactly what he meant by that, but I wasn't going to give him that. "Okay…and?"

He sat up and switched his position. "I don't want you wasting your potential scrubbing toilets anymore. I want you as one of my fighters." He informed me. "You're good. And you're good out there." He grinned that grin. "So…what do you say?"

I actually thought about it. As much as it feels wrong to be a savior, I would so much rather be out there than in here all day. And it's not like this is permanent. It's just a temporary thing. Finally, I shrugged. "Beats cleaning piss and shit all day."

He grinned from ear to ear. "I knew I could count on you." He stood up. "I'll have Laura run you through what happens next. You can meet your crew."

"Crew?" I questioned.

"This is Jed but he goes by Mud…for some reason." Laura introduced me the next day. We were about to go out on a run. My first one as a savior. I was given a new pair of boots and some weapons.

"Hey." He said.

"And this Asher."

"Hi, nice to meet you." Asher said. I introduced myself as well. "So…you were the one that Leon always talked about?" I gave him a shocked look. I didn't think Leon talked to anyone about me. "He was my best friend."

"Oh." I nodded once.

"He was a good guy."

"Yeah, he was." I looked down sadly.

"If you ever need anything, just let me know." Asher said and put a hand on my shoulder.

I gave him a sad excuse for a smile. "Thank you." I said genuinely.

"Alright, we should probably head out." Mud said. The three of them conversed as we headed out on the road. I kind of hung back and stayed quiet.

"Hey, how you holdin' up?" Asher asked me.

I shrugged. "Fine, I guess."

"The Sanctuary is no Alexandria with the mansions but…it's not that bad." He said.

"Yeah." I agreed.

"So you and Leon got married?" He asked me. I stared at him curiously. "I saw that rock on your finger."

I looked down at it. "Technically we were engaged."

He nodded. "Leon said you were pretty, but I didn't think you were this gorgeous."

I thought about his words then gave him a smirk. "Shut up."

He let out a laugh. "Hopefully we can become good friends." He gave me a nod then walked a little faster to catch up with Laura and Mud. I stared at his back.

We checked out a few stores and didn't find much. They wanted to head back already but I protested. "We still have plenty of daylight left." I said.

"We checked enough." Laura said.

"And got what? A few canned goods and some batteries?" I said smartly.

"We couldn't find anything else." Asher pointed out.

"Yeah which is why we should keep looking." I said.

"Hey." Mud snapped. "You're new here. You don't get a say."

I swallowed angrily. "Well, then you guys head back. I'm staying out."

"We can't do that." Said Laura. "We're a team. We always come back together." We stared at each other for a moment. "Let's vote. Who says we head back?" All three of them put up a hand. "You lose."

I immediately got annoyed. "Whatever." I said.

"Sorry." Asher said to me then shrugged.

We all started walking back towards home. All of a sudden, we were being shot at. "Get down!" I yelled. We all ran in different directions and took cover behind cars. "Come out!" I yelled to the person who was shooting at us.

"What are you doing?" Laura said to me.

"We know there's only one of you!" I shouted. "Come out."

After a moment's hesitation, someone said something then stepped out. It was a man, he looked to be around our age. I pointed my gun at him and stepped out. He had his hands up. "Lay your weapons on the ground." He obliged, then I ran over and collected them. I frisked him too just to be sure. "Alright, we're good." The others came out. "We can go back now."

"What about him?" Asher asked referring to the guy.

I shrugged. "I took his weapons. He can't do anything now." To the left, in the distance, there were walkers coming. "Good luck, you're gonna need it."

"I'm not letting this asshole get away with this." Mud said. "He was shooting at us."

"And he'll be taken care of." I said and pointed at the herd. "We don't need to be here for it."

"Nah." Mud shook his head. "He needs punishment first." He walked closer to the guy. "I like your jacket. I want it. Give it to me."

"O-okay." The guy was shaking in fear and took off his jacket and handed it to Mud.

"You know what, go ahead and gimme those boots too." Mud said. The guy took those off too and Mud took them.

Laura laughed. "I want his shirt."

"Why don't you take those pants off too?" Asher said. They laughed as they made the man strip naked. He shivered out in the cold. I didn't think this was funny at all.

"Come on, guys." I complained. "Let's just go."

"Not before we teach this pussy a lesson." Mud said. He kicked the guy in the stomach causing him to go down. The others laughed. They all started kicking him and throwing dirt and stuff at him.

"Knock it off!" I scolded them. "This is a waste of time. Besides, that herd is getting closer."

"We'll be alright." Said Mud. "Why don't you give him a kick?"

"I'm good." I said smartly.

"Come on, we know you have anger inside you." Said Laura. "We saw what you did to Mich. Let some out." Mich must be the guy from the bathroom.

"Might be good for you." Asher said.

They were all pressuring me to do it. My eyes widened as I walked closer to the man. I started thinking about all that's happened and how I never talk to anyone about it and just hold my emotions in. It all came out like a volcano erupting. I kicked the man hard in the ribs. They all laughed and cheered me on. I kicked him again and again. Leon's words suddenly came back to me when he was talking about East of Eden. "Evil is an innate and inescapable human problem, but at the same time, it sets forth hope that each individual has the freedom to overcome evil by his or her own choice."

I gave in to the evil…by my own choice.

I stopped and walked away a little. The others were still beating up the guy. That didn't make me feel good, it made me feel like shit.

Back at The Sanctuary, we were all in a little room drinking. There were some other saviors too. They were having a good time, but I was staring into my drink feeling shitty. Leon would be so disappointed in me. I'm disappointed in me.

"Hey, kid." Laura said. "What's wrong? You should be partying like the rest of us."

I looked over, they were all looking at me. "That wasn't cool…what we did back there to that guy." I admitted.

She scoffed. "That's what's bothering you? You'll get used to that."

"I don't want to get used to that." I snapped. "It was uncalled for."

"He was shooting at us." She got defensive. "He could've—

"Don't waste your breath." Mud told her. "She ain't one of us. She's one of those goodie goodies." He teased me. "Isn't that right?"

I glared at him. "I'm outta here."

"No." Asher stopped me. "Come on, don't go. Mud's a dick."

I raised my eyebrows. "Yeah, I'd say that's an understatement."

"Look, I know what we did was shitty. I didn't enjoy it either."

I scoffed. "It sure looked like you did."

"I only did it to fit in." He said lamely. I gave him a disgusted look and tried to turn away, but he stopped again. "You don't understand. That's how it is here. And I know it sucks…but what else is there?" He shrugged. "Sometimes you just have to put up with it."

I thought about his words and he's not totally wrong about that. The world, especially now, is just shit sometimes. I've seen worse and I probably did worse. "Fine." I finally said.

Asher smiled. "Come on, have a drink." He refilled my glass. I drank it down thinking maybe it would help. It didn't but it did lighten my mood a little. He laughed and poured me another.

Soon I was drunk like everyone else. We were laughing and playing pool and continued to drink. I was actually having a pretty good time with them.

"Hey, look at Mud." Asher said while biting a pickle. Mud was asleep in a chair. "We should color on him." He laughed.

I looked at the jar of pickles and got an idea. "No, fuck that. That's kid stuff." I said. "I got a better idea." I told them about my prank, then we did it.

I grabbed a pickle and slid it across Mud's lips, he woke a little, then Asher zipped his pants up next to him. Mud realized and woke up completely and ran after Asher. We all busted out laughing. It was the funniest thing ever!

"You motherfucker!" Mud continued chasing Asher around the room as we laughed. "If you seriously put your dick in my mouth…" He chased him.

"Whoa!" Asher said. "It was a prank. It's a prank!"

I laughed loudly. "Calm down, Mud." I said. "It was just a pickle." I threw it at him. He seemed to calm down some, but was still mad.

"That was a good one, Abby." Laura said.

"Yeah, I never would've thought of that." Said Asher. I took in their compliments and smiled. This was just like back in the day with my friends before the turn. Maybe it wasn't so bad here.

A little later when the party started to die down, I was looking over the books on the bookshelf. There was so many of them here. I told my dad and everyone back home that I wanted something like this. I always wanted a house that had a library. Nothing was ever done about it though. I guess they don't care about fun stuff like I do.

Suddenly, something caught my eye. It was East of Eden. I grabbed it and looked at it.

"Find a good one?" Asher asked me.

I turned and looked at him. "Where did this book come from?"

Asher looked like he was thinking. "Leon left it in here by accident one day." He told me. "I was gonna return it to him but…then he left."

"I knew it was his." I said.

"Did he bore you with that book too?" He smiled.

I had to laugh at that. "Yeah." We both shared a laugh. I hugged the book to my chest and smiled.

Narrator's POV

Negan heard Rick Grimes's voice over his walkie. "Rick, that you?" He asked.

"How's Abby?" The father asked.

"Baby girl is doing great." Negan said with a grin. "She was a little quiet at first, but she's getting better. Now she's making friends and having a blast." He said. "Maybe she'll even wanna stay here."

"That's not happening." Rick snapped.

Negan laughed. "We'll see." He grinned. "Have a good night." He turned the walkie off before Rick could say anything else. The man sat back with his hands behind his head and sighed. He was enjoying having Abby here.
