As the two teens opened their eyes, confusion immediately set in. While a regular time turner would reverse time up to a five hour window and keep them in the same location, it was not the case in this instance. This time turner acted more like a combination of a portkey and time turner rolled into one. Whoever made it was powerful.
As they looked around, they realized that they were on a hill overlooking Hogwarts. It was a familiar sight to be sure, but there was also something drastically different about the castle. Immediately noticeable were two more towers standing tall. One was attached to the castle, while the other sat on its own cliff side larger than even the tallest tower of the castle. Staring to the left, they quickly realized the whomping willow was nowhere to be seen.
"Harry," Hermione said with a nervous pitch to her voice. "Where is the whomping willow?" Before Harry could even answer, Hermione's brain was already kicking into an information overdrive.
According to 'Hogwarts, A History' the whomping willow was planted sometime in 1971.
Then looking in the distance at the castle she truly began to scrutinize the two additional towers.
The tower attached to the castle suggested that this rendition of the castle was standing sometime before Morgan Le Fays destruction of Hufflepuff Tower in the massive duel between Merlin in the year 1000 during their final year at Hogwarts together.
The other tower had no historical reference which perplexed Hermione. Surely a tower that massive would have been prominent throughout the history of Hogwarts.
Harry noticed Hermione nibbling at her bottom lip, with a look of concentration on her face. Before she could go on a long history lesson he took her hand before saying, "Let's just get indoors and figure out what is going on. Personally, I wouldn't mind a quick kip after getting that blasted connection destroyed. My body feels heavy and we haven't eaten anything since this morning."
Hermione nodded her agreement and they began the twenty minute trek to the castle in relative silence. Both still looked over their shoulders constantly, afraid that they would be ambushed at any moment.
As they reached the gate of Hogwarts, it silently swung open permitting them entrance.
Walking through the courtyard, they noticed throngs of students moving about as if nothing bad were going on in the world. Every student that took notice of them stopped and stared, perplexed by the two newcomers.
Nobody looked familiar to the pair. The sinking feeling of being far away from their friends and family steadily grew.
As they approached the giant, heavy doors of the great hall, they swung open revealing a middle aged man standing in a ready stance with his wand drawn.
Harry quickly shielded Hermione behind him, preparing for the worst, before the mans calming voice rang out.
"State your business at Hogwarts lad and lass. Though the gates may have permitted your entrance, I do not recognize you as any students of our institution."
Harry could feel the power in the command, and knew this had to be the Headmaster of the school. Like Dumbledore, he gave off a calm, calculating air of authority and wisdom. Magic power seemed to radiate off of the imposing wizard in heavy waves.
Harry and Hermione took in the wizards appearance quickly before responding. He was easily six foot four. His hair was dark brown, shoulder length and, similar to Harry's mop of hair, unable to be tamed. His eyes were a deep oceanic blue that shone brightly. His face was angular, but strong, though his jawline was hidden behind a well groomed beard with faint traces of gray slowly making an appearance.
The thing that really drew their eyes though, were the mans robes. They were similar in color to the robes Wizengamot members wore, but if their eyes weren't deceiving them, there appeared to be many galaxies and stars swirling throughout the fabric of the robes.
Catching himself staring, Harry quickly bowed and stammered out, "Begging your pardon sir. We are students of Hogwarts. We were transported from Gringotts after using this time turner from my family vault."
As he stated it, he pulled the necklace off of his neck and showed it to the man who took it immediately and hummed thoughtfully to himself. A look of intrigue flitted across his features.
As he looked at the two exhausted teenagers he made a decision.
"It seems we have a few things to discuss. Though you may be familiar with this place, I shall once again welcome you to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I am Headmaster Merlin Emrys." With a small bow, he ushered the two shell shocked teens into the Great Hall.
Once in the Great Hall, the first thing Hermione and Harry noticed was the addition of two tables to the normal four house tables. Above the professors seats sat two additional banners.
One depicted a golden dragon breathing crimson flames. The other, a deep galaxy purple, sat a regal looking phoenix. Harry and Hermione looked at the large banners in wonder. Now knowing the name of the man they were walking with, that banner made sense.
Seeing as lunch time had just passed for the school, the Great Hall was currently devoid of students and staff.
"I assume you two are famished?", Merlin stated looking at the two.
Harry said "Yes sir." while Hermione added "If it is not an imposition."
Nodding, Merlin quickly summoned one of the schools house elves. "Remmy."
With a little pop, a house elf wearing a well-maintained butler suit appeared before them. With a bow Remmy announced "How can Remmy be of assistance Merlin sir?"
With a smile, Merlin looked at Remmy and gestured to the pair. "Would you please have the kitchen staff prepare a small filling meal for these two."
Remmy took notice of the two teens who looked to be standing from adrenaline alone and quickly nodded. "Very well sir. It shall be done." With another pop, he was gone.
"Now, you two, please take a seat and relax." Merlin motioned to one of the house tables in the center of the Great Hall. "We shall discuss your situation once you have eaten, and rested properly." He paused for a moment and then realized. "I seem to forget myself. I have introduced myself, but not asked for your names."
Hermione helped Harry to his seat and then sat beside him before speaking up. "My name is Hermione Granger. This trouble seeker beside me is Harry Potter. Thank you for allowing us to rest. It's been a very troublesome last few months."
Food appeared before the three of them. The Hogwarts they grew up in always had amazing food, but this was an absolute feast even compared to that.
On one platter sat an entire pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon with a savory caramel glaze drizzled atop. Next to it, they noticed a bowl of Jasmine Rice with some sort of meatballs coated in a spicy smelling sauce. From the scent, the recipe seemed to be Asian in origin.
In a line, they took note of the rest. Stuffed chicken puff pastries, bangers, mash, crab cakes, Bavarian pot roast, corned beef and cabbage, marinated turkey, dressing, and tons of different bowls full of every manner of vegetable and fruit. Along with the food, pitchers of pumpkin juice, hot chocolate, gillywater, and tea were present.
Merlin waved to the food. "Please enjoy you two. I have a few professors I need to consult on the matter of your arrival. Feel free to call on Remmy when you are finished and ready to retire. He shall show you to your room." With that, Merlin walked out of the Great Hall to his office while sending a messenger patronus to his staff. It was going to be a long night.
Harry and Hermione sat for only a few minutes after Merlin left before Hermione struck up conversation. "Harry, that was Merlin! The. Bloody. Merlin. Greatest wizard of the ages. If he's here, how far back did that time turner send us? How in the world did we end up here? I've never seen a time turner rewind further than five hours. It is unheard of. What about our friends? Our family? What are we going to do?"
As Hermione ran from one question and statement to another, Harry was filling his plate with food and listening to his panic stricken best friend. By this point he knew better than to stop Hermione when she was in the middle of her ramblings. When she finally took a breath, he held up his hand so that he could speak.
"Hermione," he started with clear exhaustion in his voice, "I don't personally have the mental energy to figure out all of these questions. Let's just eat, go to bed, and figure it out later. Merlin already said he would explain things to us. Let's just enjoy the food and relax for a moment."
After a short moment to collect herself Hermione nodded. "Right." She heaved out a sigh before grabbing her own plate of food. "I suppose we just wait then."
After the two ate their fill, Harry called Remmy who appeared with a quick pop. "If Mister Potter and Missus Granger are ready to see their room now, Remmy will show you the way."
Harry nodded to Remmy before saying "Thank you for your kindness Remmy. It is pleasure to meet you by the way." Harry then held out his hand to the dignified house elf. I would like to be friends if that is alright. Your cheery demeanor reminds me of a friend who passed. His name was Dobby."
This simple sign of respect made Hermione's heart flutter. Harry knew she didn't agree with house elves being bound to wizards, but at least Harry, and it seems Merlin as well, treated them with respect, and not just as tools to be used.
"If Mister Potter insists, Remmy would be honoured to be friends with the young master." He grasped Harry's hand in his own and shook it enthusiastically.
"You can count me among your friends as well Remmy, if you don't mind my friendship." Hermione stated with a large smile on her face.
"Very well Missus Granger. It is a pleasure to have companions such with your personalities." Remmy shook her hand as well and smiled warmly at their kindness. "Now, with the pleasantries out of the way, let us be off."
The young witch and wizard followed closely behind Remmy. When he led them out of the Great Hall and headed to the distant lone tower he began to regale them about the history of the tower.
"The tower we are heading to is more secure than the main castle of Hogwarts. Technically, this tower is a separate structure on its own. While the school is primarily used for the pursuit of knowledge, this tower is used to learn how to harness the magic learned, created, or otherwise instructed by students and staff."
A solid ten minutes later and they arrived at the doors of the imposing structure. In glowing fiery letters above the arch of the door sat the words "Tower of Babel" proudly emblazoned. The crest of a mighty dragon neatly nestled behind the words.
"Merlin has instructed me to set up your room on floor sixty nine. I hear it has one of the nicer views." Remmy led the two to the center of the lobby where a massive archway sat with a large amount of runes carved along every inch of the stone structure. "Please place your hand on the arch and it will register you."
Both Harry and Hermione placed their hands on the Arch and immediately felt a swell of power from the structure, as well as a small sap of their magic pool. As soon as the feeling began, they watched mesmerized as the arch glowed a deep, transparent purple. They could see through the other side of it, and it looked nothing like the tower did before they touched it.
Where once an open room sat with comfortable looking couches, book shelves, and cozy fireplace, now sat an entire forest. Floor sixty nine was not a room like they thought it would be. Instead, they were now in a magically enlarged open field with nothing but swaying grass flowing in the gentle, cool breeze.
Remmy stepped in after them and began a very important explanation. "Each floor is designed with the thoughts of the occupants in mind. Whatever you need, shall be provided with a simple concentrated thought. The one exception is food. Though I shall take the liberty of filling your kitchen with ingredients as necessary. Master Merlin has permitted me as your house elf for the duration of your stay."
As they looked at the open space Hermione spoke up. "It's the same magic used for the Room of Requirement!" Harry nodded in agreement and wonder. The Room of Requirement was exceptionally small in comparison to this behemoth of a room.
"While it does contain the same philosophy of the Room of Requirement in Hogwarts missus," began Remmy, "this magic is far older, and more powerful. Where the room in Hogwarts can pull from its massive inventory of accumulated objects, each room here can literally create what you want."
"Seeing as you need a place to sleep, concentrate on a house for now." Remmy patiently waited to see what the two would come up with.
With looks of immense focus, the two watched as a cozy looking two story manor appeared. Around the sizable yard stood a small, white picket fence with vines and flowers wrapping and blooming around it. The entrance was adorned with a trellis just as covered as the fences. Beginning at the trellis was a cobblestone footpath leading to the manor.
"Well then you two, shall we check out your handiwork?" Remmy motioned to the impressive little house. Each step they took on the cobblestones made flowers bloom around the path, and once each foot was removed, the flowers would linger for but a moment before receding back into the grass.
Before they reached the front door Remmy snapped his fingers and filled their kitchen with food. "I have supplied the kitchen with food from the Hogwarts kitchen storage. Let me know if there are any specifics that you want in the future."
Before they could reply, the door to the house then swung open with ease on its own. Harry and Hermione walked in, and were greeted by a gorgeous den. A warm fireplace heated the large area. The most surprising part though was the paintings from their happiest memories filled the walls. Seeing their loved ones staring at them, and their own laughing smiling faces from each others perspectives throughout the years, beset both of them with strong emotions warring to be let out.
Harry quickly found a picture of Sirius smiling at him the day Hermione helped save his life. The dam finally broke. The physical and magical toll now paled in comparison to the emotional stress. Tears began falling down his cheeks silently.
Hermione walked up to him and placed an arm around his shoulder to comfort him knowing the toll it took. In her own eyes, she was staring at a picture of her parents with her on the beaches of France enjoying the sea breeze and some ice cream. She smiled, and then pulled Harry into an actual hug as she too began to cry.
After five minutes had passed, Remmy let the two calm down and said, "If you need Remmy again, just ask. I shall be with Master Merlin until then." With a quick bow he added "Good night to the two of you." With a small pop, he was gone.
Together they began exploring the rest of their new house. On the first floor were several rooms, an office, and a massive kitchen with cupboards filled to the brim with food. A magically enhanced fridge held various meats, and other ingredients that need remained cool.
On the side of the kitchen was a door that led outside. A small distance away, following another cobblestone path, was a vast tower shaped greenhouse with all manner of plants, both magical, and muggle, growing in it.
Walking up to the second floor, Hermione opened the ornate double doors directly in front of them. Her imagination had definitely provided.
Inside was a library comparable in size to Hogwarts own library, if not larger. Each book shelf was tagged to reflect their contents. Each school of magic, all organized. Every single book she could ever need, was now at her fingertips.
Walking out of the library before Harry would lose her forever, he led them down the hallway to their right. Same as the bottom floor, several rooms. As they approached a door, they noticed each room had a name plate next to it. As Harry opened the door at the end of the hallway, he held it open for Hermione before closing it.
The first thing of notice, was the Queen size bed that looked like you could sink into the sheets. On each side of it were nightstands with lanterns casting flickering light around. On the left side of the room, a door led to the lavatory. In it was a massive walk in shower with ceiling mounted shower heads. On the opposite side of the shower was the loo, and between the two, was a massive counter top with two sinks built into it, as well as a full wall mirror.
On the opposite side of the bedroom from the lavatory, was a walk in closet that would fit all manner of clothes for any occasion. Currently, it held a few sets of robes for the two of them.
Seeing them, Harry began questioning their clothes being together. "Hermione, why do you think the house put our robes together?" He looked over to her.
She blushed, and with a slight pink from the embarrassment steadily growing, looked him in the eyes. "I thought we could share a room together. After the kiss we shared, me sleeping in your arms, and being alone together, I just… I want to be closer to you. I don't want to feel like I am alone in a room by myself."
She nibbled on her lip nervously. "You don't mind do you?"
Harry remembered the kiss they shared and all the time they spent together in the forest. Before she could get anymore nervous, and instead of responding to her verbally, Harry once again pulled her to him and kissed her. The first kiss was soft, fleeting, almost a ghostly whisper. The second was a reminder of how much he cared about her. The third, reassurance that she need not worry. And finally, the fourth, a passionate one that she enjoyed as much as he did.
After the two broke apart, Harry grinned lazily before speaking. "I love you 'Mione. I, I think I always have." Holding her hand in his, he slowly led them to the bed and the two of them laid down.
Hermione smiled back at Harry. "I love you also, Harry James Potter. I am just glad you finally noticed me." Her smile turned into a playful smirk as she hit his shoulder playfully. "Lets get some sleep. So much has happened. I just want answers and soon."
As she said that, she laid her head down on his chest and snuggled against his side. His arms wrapped protectively around her. With a thought, the lamps sputtered out, and the newly formed couple passed out in each others warm embrace.
As the morning sun rose in the artificial sky of their floor, both Harry and Hermione were sound asleep. Unbeknownst to them, a small pink pygmy puff appeared on Harry's chest and began bouncing on him to get his attention. This took some effort since the little creature was hardly the size of a baseball, and weighed far less than one.
Finally, Harry began to stir awake wondering what the hell was going on. As he leaned over to the nightstand to get his glasses, the pygmy hopped onto it and bounced around some more impatient to get his attention. As Harry put his glasses on, he had to squint a bit to ensure himself of what he was seeing. The little pink fluff ball was happily bouncing up and down.
Hermione woke up when Harry gently moved her off of him, and sat beside him rubbing the sleep from her eyes and yawning. She too noticed the little ball of boundless energy bouncing about. "Did we accidentally bring this little one into the room with us somehow?" She asked.
Harry quickly scooped up the little bundle of joy into his hand and laughed as it rolled around in his palm. The two got dressed in their robes, and requested a small, quick breakfast from Remmy so they could get the day started faster.
With the little pygmy in hand, the two made their way outside of the tower and came face to face with Merlin as he was on his way to fetch them. He immediately stopped in his tracks. His face turned into a scowl as he stared at the tiny pink pygmy puff in Harry's hand.
"Pray tell Harry, how did you come across that Pygmy Puff?"
With concern quickly marring Harry's face he recounted finding the Pygmy Puff bouncing on his chest just an hour prior. The boy was confused why Merlin would have such a reaction to the cute, innocent creature. The little pygmy puff cowered in his hands, trying to shrink away from Merlin's intense gaze.
With a stern voice Merlin stated "Morgana La Fey Emrys, do you make it a habit of sneaking into people's beds while they sleep?"
The pygmy puff looked to deflate in defeat and bounced out of Harry's hand before landing on the ground. As everyone watched, it began growing into a girl no more than 5 foot even. Shoulder length, wavy brown, almost black hair topped a face with mesmerizing chocolate brown eyes.
Her long eyelashes swished as she blinked rapidly from the temporary disorientation. Her small mouth set in a pout as she threw an innocent puppy look at Merlin who in turn kept up his scowl before sighing and beginning introductions.
"Harry, Hermione, meet my little sister Morgana." Merlin gestured to her. "Pray tell little Mori, what were you doing on their floor, let alone waking them up?"
A sheepish little grin flitted across her features, and mischievousness lighted her eyes before she spoke. "I was popping around the tower because I was bored, and felt a new magical signature." She paused in thought and tilted her head. "The power radiation was similar to yours big brother. I wanted to investigate."
Merlin understood her curiosity. Like himself, Mori was able to detect magic in others with ease. "That still does not give you permission to barge into their room and wake them up." With a small smack on the back of her head he laughed. "Are you just trying to ignore your assignments again?" The facade of strict headmaster quickly appeared and Mori hid behind Harry holding his arm as a shield.
Before the two could keep bickering, Harry turned to Mori and patted her head. "It's nice to meet you in any case. If anything, you were a good alarm clock." His chuckle rang through her ears and made her smile. To her, he seemed like a friendly enough person.
Hermione next to him extended her hand, and once again introduced herself. "It's a pleasure to meet you Morgana. My name is Hermione. I am Harry's best friend. Would you like to be friends as well?"
Mori shook her hand and agreed though she didn't miss the emphasis on "best friend". Was the older girl wary of her? No bother she thought.
Merlin, tired of Mori ignoring her studies, finally detached her from Harry's side and sent her on her way. His hand brushed hair out of his face before addressing the two. "If you two would kindly grab my arm, I would like to apparate you to a meeting with the professors. They will get upset if we dawdle too much longer."
As they still wanted answers, they both silently nodded and gripped his arm before the three of them felt like they were squeezed through a narrow pipe.
Within seconds they were in a meeting room with a round table. Seven seats occupied one half of the table. Five people sat conversing among each other. Three men, Two women. The same six banners in Hogwarts' Great Hall sat behind each chair.
As the trio approached the table, Hermione quickly recognized each person. "Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, these are my esteemed colleagues of Hogwarts." Each member stood as Merlin introduced them.
"Arthur Pendragon". The dirty blonde haired man stood with his hand resting on a gem encrusted sword hilt. Muscles covered every inch of his body. His face held a light scar from a previous battle. His well kept beard gave him the look of royalty. His smile, as bright as the fire on the dragon above him. With a quick bow, he sat back down.
"Godric Gryffindor." The man stood and bowed. He too, carried a sword, only one that both young wizards recognized instantly. Forged from goblin steel, the blade of Godric himself shone brilliantly in its red scabbard. Where Arthur was blonde, Godric had a mane of ginger hair covering his head and face. His appearance similar to that of old Nordic vikings. Intimidating, beyond belief.
"Helga Hufflepuff." The short brunette stood, slightly awkwardly bowed, and smiled. She could easily pass as Hermione's relative if Harry was seeing her features correctly. The smell of soil lingered on the beautiful woman.
"Rowena Ravenclaw." A slender, raven haired beauty stood gracefully and curtsied before the two. Her facial features were sharp, almost intimidating. Her eyes were such a dark brown, they almost appeared black, much like the Raven above her. Her smile, though brief, was awe inspiring.
"Salazar Slytherin." The man stood, and looked to be the spitting image of Professor Snape, but with less sneering in his gaze, and more curiosity. Though he looked hard to approach, they were certain he would be willing to help when the need arose. A simple head nod was all he provided before sitting once more.
Merlin then took his seat below the regal phoenix. Six powerful figures all stared quietly at the two young wizards. The power in the room came out in pulsing waves. The brilliant minds of the past, now present. "Please sit you two." With a clap of his hands, Merlin summoned Remmy who quickly supplied drinks for everyone.
For a few seconds everyone was silent, taking small drinks of their beverage of choice. Finally, Professor Slytherin spoke up. "While it is indeed a pleasure to meet the both of you, the headmaster has only briefly explained why you are here. I am sure we are all ready to hear the explanation." He nodded respectfully to Merlin who in turn nodded.
Merlin pulled the ornate time turner from his robe and laid it gently on the table. "As you lot well know, I love to tinker with enchanting items. It is, after all, the main subject that I teach. The necklace before you was meant to inform me of the users mental state."
"In the event it detected extreme levels of emotional stress or fear, it would transport the subject to the grounds of Hogwarts. I wanted it to be a safety measure of sorts for Morgana, in the event that she was ever in danger. I never expected someone else to use it."
He looked at the faces of everyone present before continuing. "My concern now lies with what time, and how the pendant was activated, as well as how it came to be in your possession, rather than little Mori."
Hermione quickly took charge of the situation knowing roughly when they were sent back.
"The day we activated the pendant was January 27th, 1998." She paused for only a second before continuing. "As far as the reason it sent us to you, we have been hunted down by a Dark Lord for months who trapped us in Harry's family vault at Gringotts Bank. I assume, the pendant was passed down to different loved ones over the years, to protect them. Apparently our need was recognized by the pendant."
Merlin nodded his head while listening. As she finished, he rubbed his beard and looked to the others to see their reactions. When he noticed everyone was calm, if a little curious, he turned back to the two in question.
"Might I assume, you know what time you were returned to?"
Hermione once again nodded her head. Harry spoke up as she did. "Hermione here is one of the brightest witches of our generation." He flashed a smiled at her. "She pieced together roughly when we ended up, though to us, it seems nearly impossible. Time turners in our time, look similar to this, but can only send the users back a maximum of five hours.
Centuries seems highly unlikely. The only thing that gives it credibility is the fact that we stand before you all, the founders of Hogwarts itself. How far exactly did the pendant send us?"
Rowena answered in a calm, relaxed voice. "The current day is January 28th 998, which means you were sent back one thousand years to the day." She then looked at Merlin. "Did you anticipate the pendant working this far in time?"
With a sigh he shook his head. "I never tested the pendant. I was just looking out for my little sister. Theoretically, I never stipulated a limit to the time it would return a person, only that it bring the user safely to Hogwarts where I could protect them."
Harry and Hermione sat quietly, finally accepting their fate. Godric spoke up next. "Will the pendant be able to return them to their time if used again Merlin?"
The headmaster looked at the group and shook his head. "As I mentioned earlier, the pendant sends the person to Hogwarts in the event of danger. I imbued my own magic signature into the pendant, meaning that it most likely found the safest opportunity to deposit these two at Hogwarts, with me around. That is my current working theory."
Professor Hufflepuff entered the conversation with a fantastic question. "Seeing as they are here now, shall we enroll them into Hogwarts? The wards may accept them, but why not make them official students. From the sounds of it, their education was hampered by enemy pursuit. I for one would enjoy seeing how the brightest witch of her time engages in our classes." She smiled warmly at Hermione who immediately blushed.
"I second that decision headmaster," said Professor Ravenclaw as she looked Harry up and down. A look of deep interest twinkled in her eyes. "Harry here seems to have a magical core on par with yours if I am not mistaken. It would be wise to teach him all that we can."
Professor Pendragon spoke up next. "I for one see the boy needs refinement on his physique. He may be a wizard, but that doesn't mean he needs to ignore physical strength. It helps just as much in battles of endurance." His eyes gleamed with the promise of grueling hours of hard work and aching muscles.
"Here here!" shouted Professor Gryffindor.
Merlin looked at the two teens weighing all of the responses before addressing the two. "Given your circumstance, knowing that I will be trying everything I can to eventually get you back to your time, would you be willing to continue your final year at Hogwarts here, with us? If you are willing, you will have the brightest minds the world has at it's disposal to train you in any subject you deem fit to learn."
With minimal hesitation, a look to each other, both stood, bowed, and accepted. "We would be honoured to have the opportunity to study with your guidance."
"It is settled then." Merlin clapped joyously. "For today, enjoy the rest of it. Your schedule will be available tonight before you go to sleep. Be up bright and early at 5 in the morning tomorrow."
Their day started off with many questions. Now they had answers, and many more questions. For now, they would just have to wait and see what the next day would bring. With a final bow and a thank you, they left the room.
