There were several magical shopping areas spread out across New York City, but the one they needed to go to was located opposite MACUSA's headquarters. Damon led Maggie and Maya down a small alley next to a church, at the end of which there was a statue of a man holding a set of keys in one hand with his other hand, held out palm up. Damon tapped out a pattern on the open palm of the statue and it came alive, using the keys it held to unlock a door that had appeared carved into the stone wall beside it.
The three of them passed through the newly opened door and entered a large sunlit plaza, central to which was a small park. Just like in Diagon Alley, the plaza was lined with shops selling all sorts of magical goods, but unlike in Diagon Alley; in which the shops had been a mish-mash of shapes and sizes, the shops of Sulis Plaza, were uniform, at least on the outside. They were all built out of pure white marble blocks, inlaid with threads of silver and gold that formed patterns based on what the shop sold, Maya saw images of flowers and animals on the stone that formed an apothecary, and spindles and threads on a clothing shop they passed, as well as many others.
The ground throughout the square was paved with stones that had swirls of blue, white, and grey, within them, different colours were all enchanted to move, whirling about each other, giving Maya the sensation that she was walking on top of a river. Diagon Alley had been charming in an old-fashioned kind of way, mostly exciting because it was new and for Maya had held the promise of escape from the Dursley's. Sulis Plaza was different, a magnificent array of buildings that were swimming in magic, eyes wide Maya twisted her head around trying to take in as much as she could.
Given the brilliant white facades on all the buildings lining the plaza, Maya would have thought that the Gringotts here wouldn't stand out nearly as much as the one in Diagon Alley did. Yet somehow it still managed to draw her eye. The marble front seemed to be a much more vibrant white than that of the surrounding buildings, the inlays of gold seemed to be much deeper, and the silver had a sparkle to it that was missing from the other buildings.
The entrance was much the same as the one in London, bronze doors that were swept open by a goblin wearing a uniform of scarlet and gold, who bowed them through into a small atrium where they were faced with a set of silver doors with familiar words carved upon them. Maya, Damon, and Maggie were bowed through these doors by a pair of goblins, to reveal a vast marble hall that was identical to the Gringotts in London. The three of them crossed the hall and joined a small queue of people waiting to be attended to, but it didn't take long for them to reach the front.
"Good Morning, I'm Damon Salvatore, we have an appointment with Ricbert at eleven."
He handed over a slip of parchment to the goblin behind the counter who examined it thoroughly before nodding his head and handing it back.
"Burgock will show you the way."
Almost before he'd finished speaking a second goblin appeared next to them, and gave them a low bow.
"Thank you."
Damon nodded to the goblin behind the counter and then the three of them followed Burgock through one of the doors that lined the main hall and into a wide corridor that ran parallel to it. They followed Burgock down the corridor, all the way to the end, to a large wooden door that bore two plaques. The top one held the words; 'Ricbert, Branch Manager', the second plaque underneath, was engraved with symbols that Maya didn't understand. Burgock knocked twice on the door and a deep voice emanated from within.
"State your purpose."
"Damon Salvatore, Maya Potter, and one other, are here for their appointment."
"They may enter."
Burgock opened the door and bowed them through, shutting it behind Maggie who was the last to go through. Ricbert was sat behind a large desk, in front of which were three chairs waiting for them, Damon and Maggie took the seats on either side, leaving the middle one for Maya to sit in.
"Damon Salvatore, Maya Potter, and?"
"Dr Maggie St John."
"Welcome. Chief Ragnuk has sent me a letter of everything that needs to be done and has instructed me to aid you to the fullest extent of the banks abilities."
Though he was speaking to the room in general, his gaze remained fixed on Maya, making her think that Ragnuk had actually instructed him to aid her specifically, rather than them in general.
"The paperwork for custody is prepared and just requires your signature and the signature of your chosen guardian; Mr Salvatore. Similarly, we are ready to go with everything you need for a new identity, we just need to know what name you have chosen to go with?"
Maya shot an anxious look at Damon, who just shrugged.
"It's your choice Maya."
"Nichols." Maya replied finally, "Maya Lucinda Nichols. I'll have something from all of them then." She turned to look at Damon again, "Is that… Is that okay? Using his name?"
"I think it's a good choice. Like you said, you'll have something from all of your parents that way."
Damon knew he'd said the right thing, when a brilliant smile broke over Maya's face and she turned back to Ricbert and gave him a firm little nod.
"Maya Lucinda Nichols. That will be my name."
If Ricbert was amused by her choice, he didn't show it, just jotted down a note on the parchment in front of him.
"Excellent, we'll have everything sorted in short order. Now Ragnuk arranged to have your trust vault transferred to our branch, so you'll be able to draw on that for purchases." He transferred his gaze to Damon for the first time, continuing with; "It's normal for parents or guardians to place a monthly limit on withdrawal amounts for our underage clients, is that something you'll be doing?"
Damon was about to refuse, it was Maya's money, and she could spend it how she liked, but Maggie caught his gaze and nodded firmly. Which, yeah, he got this was part of the structure Maggie had spoke about last night, but he didn't actually know how the wixen money system worked. The Dragon's Roost was the only place within the wixen world that he visited with any frequency, and they were quite happy to accept dollars.
"Sure. A hundred a month?" He replied, trying to make it sound less like a question and more like a statement, but failing miserably.
"A hundred what? Galleon's, Sickles, Knuts?"
Ricbert's face didn't deviate an inch from the implacable expression he'd worn since they entered, but Damon just knew that the goblin was laughing at him.
"Um, the first one, Galleon's."
Ricbert raised an eyebrow, and Damon could feel the judgement coming from him, and from Maggie.
Maya was watching Damon carefully, on the one hand she wasn't sure how she felt about Damon putting a limit on her money, on the other hand a hundred Galleons was a lot. Maya had been under the impression that Damon had knowledge and an understanding of the wixen world and how it worked, so either he didn't want to put too many limits on her, or he had no concept of just how much money that was. Judging by the looks both Ricbert and Maggie were giving him, Maya was leaning towards the later, but then again, he had spent a lot of money on her already, and he had told her yesterday that she would be able to download new music on to her iPod if she wanted to, but she was limited to a hundred dollars a month. Maybe, Maya mused, he just didn't understand anything about money, muggle or wixen.
"Mr Salvatore, a Galleon is worth between seventeen and eighteen dollars, depending on the exchange rate."
"Right,"
Damon shot a desperate glance at Maggie, who's lips twitched in amusement.
"What is the usual limit placed by parents and guardians?"
Maggie asked, coming to Damon's rescue with the question she'd directed at Ricbert.
"It varies from family to family, much as it does with muggles I'd imagine, but most of the accounts I oversee have limits of between twenty-five and fifty Galleons."
"Thank you." Maggie turned to Damon, "Do you intend to give Maya an allowance of muggle money as well?"
Maya was startled by Maggie's question; she'd never had an allowance before. Dudley had one, Petunia and Vernon gave him a hundred pounds a month to spend on whatever he liked, he usually ended up getting a lot more though, Petunia would give him money whenever he demanded it. She hadn't considered that Damon might do the same for her, even with all the money he'd spent on her already.
"Yes."
"It's your choice Damon but I imagine twenty-five Galleons a month and whatever allowance you choose to give Maya, will be more than sufficient for a twelve-year-old."
Damon nodded and looked down at Maya who was watching him with a slight frown, eyes shadowed with confusion.
"What do you think, will twenty-five galleons be enough a month?"
Maya was about to nod, not even sure what she'd spend twenty-five Galleons a month on, when a thought occurred to her.
"What about school stuff? I need a new wand, books, a cauldron –"
Maya had left everything behind in Britain, even her beloved broom, everything except Hedwig, her invisibility cloak, the photo album Hagrid had given her and the outfits Narcissa had purchased. She'd had to make it look like she really had run away, and weighing herself down with stuff she didn't need, and which didn't have any real sentimental value, would have detracted from that impression.
"School stuff, wand, uniform, books, and anything else you need, will be paid for by me. I'm your guardian, I'm supposed to pay for things like that. The money from your trust fund and your allowance, is for you to spend on things you want, sweets, and things like that, not necessities."
Damon turned back to Ricbert who'd been patiently waiting for them to finish their discussion.
"Twenty-five Galleon a month limit for now please, I assume I'll be able to increase the amount as Maya get's older."
"If you wish to."
Ricbert jotted down another note.
"Do you wish to open an account for yourself Mr Salvatore? It will mean you won't need to exchange money every time you need to buy something for Miss Potter."
"Yes, that sounds like a good idea."
"Very well, Gringotts maintains relationships with all the American muggle banks, so once you're account is set up, you'll be able to transfer money in whenever you need to. We can sort that out whilst Miss Potter is being checked over by the healer.
"Now, with regards to Miss Potter's inheritance, her account managers would like to meet with her once a month to begin teaching her what she needs to know. As her guardian you have the right to accompany her to those meetings should you wish to do so, they are provisionally set for the fourth Sunday of every month, but that can be changed at any time, if it doesn't work for you."
Damon couldn't see a problem with that so he nodded, if it did prove to be an issue, they could always rearrange it.
"Good. That is everything I have on my list, once the paperwork is all signed, I'll have Burgock take Miss Potter to see the healers so that they can assess how she is doing and make any recommendations for her healing. During which time we can set up an account for yourself Mr Salvatore. Dr St John, will you be staying here or accompanying Miss Potter?"
"I'll be accompanying Maya, I'd like to confer with her healers, make sure I understand her needs from a physical standpoint."
"And I assume you've agreed to this Miss Potter?"
Maya nodded.
"Very well."
Ricbert set a piece of parchment down in front of Maya and handed her a quill.
"If you could just sign; here, here, and here, please Miss Potter."
Maya followed his instructions, signing in the places he'd indicated before handing the quill to Damon so that he could also sign. It wasn't until the paperwork was signed and Maya relaxed slightly that she realised how tense she'd been, worried that it wouldn't go through, and she'd end up back at the Dursley's.
As soon as they were done signing the door opened and Burgock reappeared, ready to take Maya and Maggie to see the healers.
"Your new passport, birth certificate, and Social Security Number, will be ready for you once you're finished with the healers."
"Thank you."
"You're very welcome, Miss Potter."
Burgock led, Maya and Maggie, back down the hallway to another room, he didn't knock this time, he didn't need to. The door was already open and the two goblins inside looked up as soon as they appeared, both their gazes fixed on Maya.
"Come in, Miss Potter. We'll let you know when we're done Burgock."
Maya stepped inside the room, followed by Maggie, Burgock gave a little bow and pulled the door closed.
"Hi, I'm Dr Maggie St John, Head of Psychiatric medicine at the New York Institute for Magical Healing. I'm a friend of Damon Salvatore, Maya's new guardian, and Maya has given me permission to confer with you so that I can understand her medical needs and ensure she's on the right track."
The goblin who had spoken before bared her teeth in a sharp grin and inclined her head.
"I've heard good things about you Dr St John. If Miss Potter has no objection, I will gladly confer with you."
Maggie smiled and stepped back so that she was standing against the wall of the room, given the healers space to do their work. Both the goblins nodded in appreciation at this gesture and turned their gazes on to Maya who was staring at them both, anxiously fiddling with the hem of her top.
"No need to worry Miss Potter. Now that you're recovered from the removal of the Horcrux, we're going to check you over, make sure there's no lingering infection, or after affects that might hinder you in the future. We will most likely have some recommendations to help you recover faster. Are you ready?"
Maya nodded, shooting an anxious glance at Maggie, who responded with a soft calming smile.
"Excellent. Why don't you hop up on the bed and lie down, Miss Potter, and we'll begin."
Maya did as instructed, lying down on her back on the bed, that was the only piece of furniture in the room, and staring up at the ceiling. She startled slightly when something smooth and hard was placed on her forehead, but a gentle yet firm touch on her shoulder stopped her from sitting up.
"Easy, Miss Potter. They're just rune stones, they'll help us guide the ritual."
More stones were placed above her heart, on her stomach, her shoulders, at the top of each leg, and on each of her hands and feet. With all the stones placed the two goblins stepped back and began to chant in unison, Maya didn't recognise the language at all.
Maya figured she must have dosed off because the next thing she knew, the chanting had ended, the stones were being plucked off of her one by one, and she was being helped into a sitting position by one of the healers, whilst the other was busy talking with Maggie in a low tone.
Maya put a hand to her head, which was feeling a bit achy, if she was honest with herself, she was feeling a bit achy all over her body, it wasn't awful, just a bit uncomfortable. The goblin who had helped her sit up, pushed a small potion bottle into her hands.
"Drink that, it will help."
In the year she had spent in the wixen world, Maya had grown used to drinking potions, when instructed to, by someone using that exact tone of voice. Madam Pomfrey had had it down to a tee, and since the goblin could pull it off as well, Maya figured it was a healer thing, either something they were taught, or something that they just knewhow to do. The potion worked rapidly, within minutes, the achy feeling disappeared completely. Maggie and the healer ended their discussion, and both turned to look at Maya.
"There was no infection, and no sign of any dark magic lingering within you, or your scar. I've given Dr St John all the details of the potion regime, diet plan, and exercises, that I'm recommending for you to follow. I'd like to give you another check-up in a month's time."
Maya glanced at Maggie who nodded encouragingly.
"Okay."
"Good. Burgock will take you back to Ricbert's office."
Burgock must have been waiting for them to finish, because he was already standing outside the door when they exited the healer's room. He swiftly led them down the hall, back to Ricbert's office, where Damon was waiting for them. Ricbert handed Maya a folder containing a passport, birth certificate, and a social security number, all under her new last name. She also received a money pouch, a vault key, and a small token that apparently worked like a debit card in the shops, so she wouldn't have to go down to her vault to collect coins each month if she didn't want to. The limit would remain the same no matter how she chose to obtain it, but would apparently roll over monthly, so if she wanted to save up for something big, she would be able to.
With everything sorted the three of them left the bank together. They went into a shop called Potionology, that the goblin healer Garruk, had recommended to Maggie, where they put in an order for the potions Maya would need to take, all to be delivered to Damon's house on a weekly basis. After the potions were ordered they stopped in at Feather & Fur, to buy an owl stand, food, dishes, and some treats for Hedwig.
Before they headed back to his house, Damon treated them both to lunch at one of the small café's that were dotted around the plaza. They were still trying to determine what foods Maya enjoyed, which was slightly hampered by the fact that she would eat whatever she was given. They weren't sure if this was because she liked all the food she'd had so far, or because she had been conditioned not to refuse what was given to her.
