Episode 1 :
"Life could be dream, Life could be dream…." – The Chordettes.
Opening his eyes, the young boy found himself lying down on a hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown and beside him, on a chair sat an old lady.
As he squinted his eyes to recognize any of the features she had, a voice suddenly came out of nowhere.
"JAUNE! You're awake." A woman with long blonde hair tied as a ponytail exclaimed as she entered the room followed by a nurse.
The woman who called out his name was dressed in a blue jacket with blue jeans and sneakers.
She looked to be somewhat familiar and as she came towards him, the old lady beside him woke up and began to stare at him, smiling kindly.
"Coral ! Be calm, just cause Jaune is alright now doesn't mean that you can go and frighten him like that !" the old lady began to scold calmly.
Coral however was right next to him checking his forehead and his pulse with the nurse standing right beside her.
"Alright, grandma got it." She stated as she then looked at him and smiled.
The nurse meanwhile placated her by telling her not to make too much noise.
She then turns to look at him and smiled calmly.
"Well hello there, Jaune. How are you feeling ?"
"Well…."
As he began to move his arms freely, he felt a slight pain on his chest.
"Ugghhh…" he groaned.
"I see." The nurse replied.
"Calm down, and take some more rest." The kind nurse told him and he did as he was told.
Later on, his grandmother and sister had filled him up on what had happened beforehand.
"So, it was an accident… so that's why my body hurts a lot." He trailed off.
His sister on the other hand just nodded.
"Yep, I mean come on, look at your body, you've become a noodle." She joked.
Their Grandma on the other hand, just brushed off her teasing and then looked at him with care and concern.
"Listen Jaune, after everything that has happened, it is alright if you can't walk around. Just wait for a few more days and relax in the hospital for a while. Once you're all fine, we'll take you back home. Your parents are abroad right now but once they hear about your condition, they'll return soon. Okay ?"
"Thanks."
He gave a weak smile which did little to reassure her given her reaction. His sister on the other hand decided to rush her off while waving back towards him.
"We'll be back tomorrow, don't worry Jaune. Have some rest and gather your thoughts." She smiled as she left.
As he laid there on the bed, he felt bored.
Thinking of how things had come to this point.
"I'm not disturbing, am I ?" a voice startled his thoughts and as he turned to the door, he spotted the nurse that had entered with his sister that morning.
"Hello, miss." He said politely.
"It's ok, my name is Amber Autumn."
"Well hello Miss Amber Autumn."
"Please call me Amber."
"Oh-ok."
She was a beauty that much Jaune could say.
With short brown hair and light brown complexion combined with her dress and her lithe figure, she could easily be considered one of the top beauties of the world.
"Did you know, we met a few times recently ?"
That caught him off guard.
"We-we did ?"
"Yep. Although we never interacted much, the last time we met was with your buddy still around. I'm sorry for what happened though."
"That's ok. It's no one's fault."
"Yea. That's true. That being said, are you still going to research on fairy tales and legends of this town ?"
"Huh ?"
She looked quiet taken back before she quickly resumed her position.
" Yea, it's something you and your buddy used to do before the accident."
"Oh."
He thought for a while.
"Did- did I leave like anything behind or like y-kn… ?"
"Well your grandmother left some books for you here to read, saying this is what you're usually into now. I know I shouldn't have checked but… it's interesting in what you boys were upto."
She quietened once again.
"I'm sorry for your loss. I'll be back with those books."
And she left waving him goodbye.
….
"It's good to see your awake."
"Yep, glad that the trip was worth it."
"Geez- Mercury cut it out. Ahem well hello Jaune, good to see your awake as well."
Right in front of him stood three students.
Two looking similar in age as him but the one in middle felt slightly older.
She placed a hand on her chest.
"I am Cinder Fall – the head representative of the Beacon Union Class and these are my associates- Mercury Black and Emerald Sustrai."
"Hello." The one named Emerald waved.
"Yo." The one leaning on the wall- Mercury muttered.
"We're here because we've received news of your recovery and Beacon Middle is here to support you in your trying times."
"Thank you but I.. haven't enrolled yet." He replied.
That news seemed to strike each of them down. Emerald's friendly expression took a sudden turn and she stared at him in both pity and shock.
Even Mercury, the guy who seemed to be laid back stared at him in mix curiosity.
Cinder stared at him with some form of expression before shifting back into normal.
"Be that as it may, if you must know, Beacon is the only educational establishment in the town and so since you are staying here, it is not wrong to assume that you will be going to it, right ?"
"Yeah, you are right. I was gonna- I mean enroll in Beacon Middle, Grade 9."
"Well, you must know that there has been a blending of classes in Beacon. Grades 9 to 11 have been merged into one classroom so expect seniors as classmates. That being said, most of us do get free periods for classes that we were never meant to attend. So don't be late. We did bring you notes for this semester."
"Oh thank you." He replied absentmindedly as Mercury came towards him opening his bag and giving him papers.
As they began to leave, Jaune looked once more at the papers and cried out softly, "These notes- they're in my handwriting ?"
As both Mercury and Emerald watched, Cinder came towards him and brought her hand close towards him.
He looked at her in confusion.
"Please give me your hand."
Obeying her instruction, she then muttered out, "An Arc never goes back on their word."
"I…..I'm sorry."
Cinder gave a look of genuine fear as it quickly returned back to non-chalance as she then gave a final goodbye before leaving with her crew.
As she left, Jaune stared at his hand once more, his heart beating softly.
For some reason, his heart was in pain and his head hurt but the pain was dull.
However, the look of pain on Cinder's face was etched on his memory as he tried to understand what she meant.
He looked at the notes once more, his thoughts running wild.
He had been in this town for only 3 weeks so how did he write these notes.
He had never gone to Beacon and yet his body felt something was wrong.
…
As he read the fairy tales and legends while the kind nurse Amber was around, he had seen notes and references in each pages, some of which were written by him and someone else.
It was hard to imagine him being this interested in fairy tales.
Sure he was interested in legends but it was more about superheroes and comic books but here was the undeniable proof.
Every page had something tagged and marked. Some had dates while others had locations and places which he knew that he had never heard of.
He had finished off the tale of Two Brothers, The Girl in the Tower, The Infinite Man, the Four Maidens and the Warrior in the Woods in that order. Following the list that had been marked and kept on top of the books, Jaune made sure to check it every once in a while.
As he read the stories, he even discussed the tales with Amber who seemed happier talking with him.
"Who knows? Perhaps something is hidden between legends and fairy tales that can only be found hidden between the lines. I mean this county has weird things so it's not far-fetched. Just like you said, it's better to check for proof even if there is none."
That was the main thing he remembered about the discussion as he went to the bathroom.
As he washed his face once more, he looked at his sharp blue eyes.
Flashes of pain came and went but he decided to ignore it just to study his appearance.
Shaggy blonde, dark shades under his eyes and the fact that he was as pale as snow was concerning yet he deemed it to be that he was still recovering.
The moment he stepped out he notice a young girl with red hood over her head staring at one of the rooms across the hall.
Curious he went towards her and just within five feet she glanced at him, her silver eyes flashing at him immediately before dimming.
"What ?"
"I just came to check what's going on."
"And ?"
"And I just…. Are you ok ?"
" Aren't you the patient ?"
"Yeah well, I- well you were standing here for quite some time so, I thought you needed help ?"
She kept quiet before nodding.
"Be careful," she replied before turning back to the elevator, "you survived once, Jaune Arc."
As she pulled the hood over her head, he could not forget the flash of her silver eyes the moment she looked at him. Then he found staring at the room that she had been staring at all along.
Feeling courageous he opened the door slowly and fought that the pulse had streamlined and the patient had died.
Nurses and doctors soon came in as he called for them.
….
The town was not a well-known place. Despite being considered a village, it had nearly everything a city had, one of every kind of buildings, arcades, malls, theatres, parks, bars etc.
The problem was that it was somewhat isolated, and the people here were more known towards each other.
Perhaps that was why everyone greeted him as he walked to school.
But as he looked at their faces he could see their joy was fleeting.
Tension was in the air for some reason.
And He felt like a lot of it was directed at him.
As he stood outside the door of his new class, he remembered to breath in and out.
'Strange,' he thought, ' why am I not nervous.'
Then as if by instinct he slide the door open and entered.
The class was silent as the homeroom teacher stood beside him welcoming him.
He looked towards his new classmates and could see a lot of them.
He could even spot the three that had visited him that day.
"Hello. I'm Jaune Arc and I'm 15, hoping to start Grade 9 here at Beacon Middle. I was born in France but raised here and I'm looking forward to studying with you all."
The class remained silent before someone raised a hand.
A ginger- her hand raised as she looked at him anxiously.
"How long have you been here ?"
"3 weeks." He answered smiling hoping to remove the negative atmosphere.
The homeroom teacher sighed as it had the opposite effect on the class.
He could see most were worried while others had understanding, the ginger in question was stunned.
His focus fell onto a snow-haired girl whose complexion was similar to that of ice but her beauty was marred by the shock she received when she heard the news. Another girl- a tall redhead looked forlorn as she stared at him with some sort of emotion.
The girl named Cinder even had that same expression earlier but when he looked at her, he found nothing but acceptance.
"Ok, then go find a seat at the back. There are four chairs, choose one." The teacher said as he began to usher the class into silence.
As he walked through, he could hear whispers all around.
People were giving him odd looks and sentences had reached his ears without the context.
"Yang still couldn't come cause of the accident…"
"….so the other kid never made it….."
"..I told you the curse was real, he probably died and now…"
"At least she –"
"Shh!"
As he picked the third one near the window, he could see etches and marks on the empty desk right next to the window.
Curbing his curiosity by listening to the teacher he sat down and began to take out his books.
"Alright class, this will be your assistant homeroom teacher, Miss Ann Greene. Please behave while she works here for the time-being and please remember to submit your suggestions in time. Just don't do it last time."
The class slightly giggled before returning to silence while the new teacher smiled and waved.
She introduced herself and Jaune felt the day pass by.
…
"Hey buddy, so is true you just took from the vending machine back at the hospital when you discharged ?" a friendly blonde, Sun he was called asked jovially.
"Wow, never thought about doing that," a girl named Coco who wore rather fashionable accessories on her uniform sat nearby budded in.
"Is it not concerning that classmate Jaune spent almost two weeks in a coma and now he is here walking ?" another ginger haired girl- Penny looked at him in astonishment.
"Ignore the Polish girl Penny, she was raised there and just arrived last summer here, me and the gang had been trying hard to change her ways but so far no luck," a rather colorful girl Neon called out.
"Guys please, we shouldn't crowd him like this." Nolan, a rather friendly yet timid guy called out.
"Yeah dude looks like he's gonna pop out," Mercury snickered.
"Mercury will you quit it ?" whined Emerald.
A flip-phone was brought in front of him with a text that read, " Are you sure that you didn't hit your head or sth ? Maybe you forgot your memories ?"
It belonged to a black haired twin-tailed girl with emerald eyes.
He nodded.
"Yes. The doctor said that it was a heart condition related to stress. I-," he chuckled slowly, " I don't even remember how but they said that I couldn't apparently stand something so I had some kind of brain shutdown."
"Woah. You sure you should be hear dude ?"
"C'mon Flynt. He said he's fine."
"I agree with him. Are you really okay ?" another guy- someone called Ivori pointed out.
"Yea, I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me." He affirmed hoping people would stop crowding him about his accident or apparent condition.
"Um-hello again. I'm Pyrrha Nikos." A tall redheaded girl looked at him anxiously.
Jaune just waved at her, wondering what was wrong.
"Yep and apparently she's quite the athlete. In fact she's the talk of the town and is on the fast track to become a world renowned athlete." Bolin remarked missing the irritated look from her.
"If that is, she can beat me." Another girl with blonde hair like a lion, Arslan said, trying to get on her nerves.
"Oh yeah place your bets guys, who will win ?"
"Easy Nikos fair and square."
"I don't know, Arslan's been training a lot lately."
"You sure about that Nebula ?"
"Please try to act mature in this." A dark haired girl with a beret on her head, Ciel that was her name looked at the group with disdain.
"Ain't we like, 15 ?"
"Huh, I turned 16 yesterday."
"Renny noo, we're losing the race of time."
"Nora please, this isn't that sort of race."
Jaune just laughed as the people around him began to badger and goof off. It felt funny. It felt like he belonged.
…
In sports class, he found out that apart from them no other students were nearby.
"Hey, Neptune?," he called out towards the blue haired teen who was busy stretching, " why are we the only ones doing sports ? Aren't there like other classes ?"
"Oh." The blue haired sound almost relieved.
"You see, that due to some problems the school had to merge all the classes into one. The students you see here are basically the only ones from Grade 9 to 11. I thought the head representative-."
"Oh yea, sorry to cut you off but I just remembered Cinder told me that."
"Yeah." And with that Jaune saw Neptune looked at the pool with both sadness and fear.
"Are you alright ?"
"Yea- I'm-I'm scared of drowning. It's stupid I know, but I- I had a bad experience while swimming once so…"
He felt a hand on his shoulder.
"Don't worry, man. Everyone was scared of something at one point. Luckily swimming is something a person can learn so yeah, you could learn how to overcome your fear of drowning. I can help teach you."
Neptune stared at him wide-eyed.
"Would you do that ?"
"Yeah, of course."
"Thank you a lot man. Your my bro, well Sun first then Sage and then Scarlet. Your like my 7th bro."
Jaune chuckled.
"It's alright."
As he looked at the changing weather, he noticed someone was at the roof.
Staring at them ,he felt like he saw those silver eyes somewhere.
"Hey, Neptune I gotta go."
"Hey, where you go- " he asked as he saw Jaune heading back to the school, not knowing that someone was watching them from the roof.
….
"So it's you," the boy huffed in exhaustion as he looked at the girl.
She had the same school uniform as he did but she also had a jacket with a red hood covering her head.
"Do you go to this school ?"
…
He came closer to her before standing next to a railing looking down where she was staring at. It was the same place he and Neptune had been at earlier.
"Um, hello , my name is Jaune Arc and I released that you knew my name before back at the hospital."
She was quiet.
The more he looked the more he realized that she was two inches shorter than him.
"Have we met before ?" he asked.
…
Leaning back on the railings he saw the various shapes of the clouds.
Some twisting and turning.
One even looking like some sort of giant scorpion with large claws and a stinger that seemed to aim at him.
He stayed there for a while before the bell rang.
The girl then moved, heading towards the door.
"If we met, you would have remembered my name and the people in this town."
That was all she said before she went down.
Jaune looked at her.
And at that moment all he could see was the pain on her silver eyes.
Grimm- mythological beasts that are said to be from Darkness, feasting on nothing but human pain and suffering. They are said to been mentioned during the 13th century but literary accounts from then mention that such beasts that share a likeness to those mentioned in tales from the 9th century.
The county of Remnant have been plagued by such beasts till recent times. Though no one can truly claim that such beasts exist, unexplained murders and freak accidents have been continuously happening to no end. It is said that families keep connected with their neighbours during such times.
Though the town may try to persist against this threat, they will have to remove the curse.
