Chapter 1261 Tremania Fruits

"Zam iz!" Lory said loudly, pointing to the Tremania fruit that was in the distance.

"Thank you, Lory," Emma said, rubbing his head with a smile.

Lory grinned with a wide smile back to her, feeling proud.

Emma had of course long since seen the fruit, but she let Lory believe that it was him that found it. In doing so, she made Lyra feel a little bad.

She thought of some other way to make her feel useful later.

Once they arrived at the location, she saw the fruit that was hanging far above her casual reach. She thought of something and used her powers to make the two cubs fly.

"Can you get that for me Lory? Lyra?" she asked asshe flew them right to the fruit. "Bite on the green stem. No, the stem. That's not the stem. Lory, stop eating the fruit, I need that. Lyra thats a branch, you can't eat—"

The entire branch fell at once. Emma caught it before it hit the ground and picked the fruits from the branch, before storing them.

She looked back up to find the two cubs looking down with wide smiles, looking for praise.

Emma wasn't sure if she should give them one or not. After all, they hadn't exactly done something good.

"Good job, Lyra. You too, Lory," Umbra spoke up. "Help sister Emma gather more fruits please. And don't break any branches this time. Here, you only heve to do this."

A small blade of shadow appeared from underneath Umbra, flying directly into the tree where it cut the stem of the Tremania fruit, which then fell.

Umbra brought out a wall of shadow that devoured the fruit before it flew out from underneath her.

Emma grabbed the fruit and nodded in thanks to Umbra. "Just like that, kiddos. Can you do that?" she asked.

"Yis!" Lory said.

"Zam iz!" Lyra replied.

Emma smiled, but on the inside, she knew that she would most likely have to ask her father to make the two forget about that word.

She could probably do it herself as well, but she didn't have any practice and thus didn't want to mess it all up, just in case.

Lory and Lyra flew through the air, cutting down all the fruits, and letting them fall onto Emma.

Emma caught them all as they fell and counted them to see how many she had in the end.

42.

That was quite a nice haul from a single tree.

Once the fruits were down, Emma brought back the two kids as well and placed them on top of her shoulders. Then, she brought out one of the fruits that were a little damaged and plucked out one of them to try on her own.

The fruit she ate was slightly sour, mostly sweet, and with a hint of what she thought was alcohol at the end.

"No wonder there is such a high demand for it," she thought. "They probably just want to eat it for the alcohol taste without having to get drunk or something."

As she continued on, she found the flowers that she was supposed to bring back, along with a few different things.

Quite a few hours had passed since she had come here and it was already afternoon. She wanted to continue, but then she heard a thunderous road from the distance, a strong sound that rarely happened back on Earth or in the Origin.

The two cubs were frightened by the sound and Emma held them tightly in her embrace. "It's just lightning, it's alright," she told them. "Only the sound is large. It won't hurt you."

The two kids were not so easily calmed. In the end, Emma had to give them back to their mother.

Umbra held onto them on her underside using Shadow Essence. Emma looked at them properly fastened before looking to the sky as the sun was quickly hidden behind thick clouds.

"Wow, it gets dark in this place so quickly. And does it always rain in the afternoon?" she wondered if that was the same as what had happened last time. "Should we return?"

Umbra looked around. "Maybe we should. Or at least we should find a shelter until your father can come to get us or something," she said.

"Why wait for Father?" Emma asked. "I can teleport us back."

"Oh," Umbra was surprised. "I was under the impression that only your father could do those things."

"Ahem. I can't really do all that he can. Especially creating things like those books that he does," she said. "But, doing something like teleporting or erasing minds is something all Wills are capable of. If it were my planet, I could move people around without even thinking about it."

"I only have to put effort because I am not in my world right now," Emma said.

"So… can you take us back then?" Umbra asked.

"Uhh…" Emma thought for a moment. "Better not. I don't have practice with it, so I don't want to screw it up. I'll try it on my own first in the coming days."

"Okay," Umbra said with a bit of a chuckle. "For now, let us just find some shelter then. I don't want to keep the kids walking in the rain. I would hate it if they end up loving it somehow."

Emma chuckled a little. "They only learn the worst things, don't they?' she asked. "Alright, lets go find a large tree or something to take shelter under. It will start raining very—"

Emma's words paused in her mouth when she noticed something out of the corner of her eyes. She slowly turned and saw a deer, walking on its own, without any urgency.

Her eyes ignored the brown body of the deer and instead went to the glowing orange antlers on its head.

"There it is," she said softly.

Umbra was curious as to what she was talking about, so she turned around and finally saw it.

"Is that…"

"A Flamelord Deer."

Chapter 1262 Conduits

"What do we do now?" Umbra asked. "Do you fight it?"

"Maybe," Emma said. "How strong is it?"

Umbra looked at the Deer. "Essence Manifestation realm," she said. "As far as I'm aware, this thing isn't seeing us as a threat at all."

"Well, me and the kids are only in the 5 Sense Improvement realm, and you are so far beyond that it can't even sense you," Emma said. "It's understandable why it is not afraid of any of us."

"Do you want me to help?" Umbra asked. "Not that you would need any."

"No, I don't need your help," Emma said, looking toward the Deer in the distance, frowning a little as she did so."

"So what's the problem?" Umbra asked. "Why aren't you going? It's going to rain soon. We will need to leave."

"Yes, yes, I'm going," Emma said. "I'm… I'm just confused as to what to do exactly."

"Huh?" Umbra asked. "What do you mean? What are you confused about."

"I don't have any powers do I?" Emma said. "5 Sense Improvement realm gives me nothing and father hasn't given me any Essence Weapon. There isn't much I can do without using my real strength, but that's not very fun."

"Besides, I don't want to fight it. I'm not the sort of person that hurts others in the first place," she said.

Umbra found that a little hard to believe considering the 5 different people she had beaten up just a few hours ago.

"I don't have anything to tell you then," Umbra said. "If you can't fight, then I don't know how you are going to kill it."

Ads by Pubfuture

"Kill it?" Emma looked toward Emma in confusion. "Why would I want to kill it?"

Umbra was a little taken aback. "Wasn't… that the mission of yours? To take that beast's corpse back?" she asked.

"No," Emma said. "I don't have to kill it for the mission."

"Oh," Umbra said. "I was mistaken then. I suppose you will have to take the deer back alive then."

"No," Emma said again. "The mission isn't to take back the deer at all."

"Then what is it?" Umbra asked in confusion.

Emma pointed. "See its antlers?" she asked.

Umbra looked at the glowing orange antlers as if she was looking at fire itself. "Yes," she said.

"That is what we're supposed to get," Emma said. "That Antler is apparently a natural conduit, and thus sells for a whole lot of money."

Umbra looked at the Deer and started walking toward it with Emma. They couldn't let it get too far away while they decided what to do with it.

"What is a conduit again?" Umbra asked.

"You see the sword my father used when absorbing?" Emma asked.

"Yes, that strong sword," she remembered. "Yes, that is a called a conduit. If you put your essence into it, you can create something from it even if you aren't using that type of Essence or aren't in the Essence manifestation realm yet."

"Conduits are anything that can help you convert the Essence in your body into something like an attack."

"As far as I'm aware, there are 3 types of Conduits."

"First, is the Natural conduit. The Flamelord deer's antler is a natural conduit."

Ads by Pubfuture

"Second is the Man-made conduit. The sword my father has is a manmade conduit."

"Finally, the third ones are skills. They are conduits in the sense that they can be used to convert Essence into something else. You are familiar with these, but I am not."

Umbra nodded for a moment and asked, "Aren't the swords everywhere? I remember seeing those goons that my kids fought this morning carrying them. That is what you are talking about, right?"

"Yes," Emma said.

"Then why are the Deer's antlers going to make us rich when everyone has swords?" Umbra asked.

"Ah, that's because of the three conduits they all have their own advantage and disadvantages. Because of the conditions, the natural conduit is considered to be the best," Emma said.

"What sort of conditions?" Umbra asked.

"Hmm… what did father say again?" she thought. "Ah right, Flexibility and Essence Strength. Those are the conditions."

Umbra wasn't sure what Emma was talking about. "What are those?"

"Essence strength is simple to understand, right? It's just how strong the attacks end up becoming," she said. "Manmade conduits and Skills have scalable Essence strength, meaning they become strong with the user."

"However, a Natural conduit's Essence strength is capped at a certain level, depending on the conduit itself. That Flamelord Deer's antlers, for example, might not have an Essence strength over the Essence Manifestation realm. This gives it limited strength."

Umbra frowned a little. "That doesn't sound very good. Isn't that bad?" She asked.

"It is," Emma said. "But the Natural conduit makes up for it in its Flexibility."

"Flexibility is how flexible a conduit is at creating something," Emma explained. "For example, if I make a sword with all the water in a lake, I won't be able to create an attack with more water than what was in that lake."

"That is beacuse Man-made conduits have low flexibility. Skills in fact have no flexibility at all. You can only use a skill in just one way at all times."

"However, Natural conduits have extremely great flexibility," Emma said. "They can be used in any way, shape, or form. If I have a Natural Shadow Conduit, I could use any and all skills that you could. All I require is to know the skills and how they work."

"Now, imagine if the most anyone can reach in your city is Essence Manifestation realm, with only a handful ever reaching beyond that. You can see why they would love a natural conduit like this."

"They have no reason to care about its limited Essence strength and everything to care about its unlimited flexibility."

"That is why the natural conduits sell for so much," Emma said. "Once as large as that antler would sell for so much that we would never have to work another day for years and years on end."

Chapter 1263 The Lightning Bolt

Ning and Byron walked together toward the edge of the city, a few hundred meters to the side of the port.

Byron had a boat attached at the very edge of the port, which he quickly untied and got onto it. Ning jumped and slowly landed on the boat as well.

"You wanna paddle?" he asked Ning.

"Sure," Ning said and started paddling as the two left the shore.

Ning looked at the sunny sky that was slowly being covered up by clouds. It was afternoon, and at any moment it would start raining.

"Any moment now, the first lightning strike will hit," Byron said. "We have to be there to catch it."

Ning nodded. "But how will we catch it exactly?" he asked. "How do you want to use the Lightning Essence Crystal here."

"You will see," Byron said with a mysterious smile. He couldn't wait to show something amazing to this amazing man.

"Okay," Ning looked forward to whatever was going to happen next. "Next question then. How are we going to call the lightning?"

"Oh, that is easy," Byron said. "Once it gets sufficiently cloudy, I'll show you. Although, just for the sake of it, stay away from me when it gets too cloudy, okay?"

Ning nodded and continued paddling his way out into the ocean on a tiny boat. "What is the nephew of the mayor doing with such a small boat? Shouldn't you have a larger boat?" he asked.

Byron gave a rueful smile. "I might be the nephew, but that doesn't mean my uncle does much for me," he said. "I wasn't originally from here. I was from 2 cities over and used to live with my own family."

"However, they died when I was a young boy, so my uncle took me in. In exchange for taking me in, however, he took away everything my parents left behind after they died too," Byron said.

"As I grew up, I was given a place to stay and food to eat, but aside from that I was given nothing else."

"I had to go out on my own and steal my cousin's book to try and learn anything," he said. "I somehow managed to learn a lot from that, but I also got bullied a lot by my cousin because of that."

"Thankfully, I learned how to use Conversion as well. Thanks to that, my uncle opened me a shop and let me helm it," he said. "However, he still kept the ownership, passing it onto his son so he could reap the benefits of my shop."

"Damn," Ning couldn't help but say. "Your uncle sounds like a true piece of shit. And your cousin doesn't sound any better."

"They aren't," Byron said. "I bought this boat with what little money I could find. I spend my time outside of the shop by helping the Crystal shops figure out the quality of heir crystals that they get shipped every once in a while."

"I do what I can to survive," he said.

Ning shook his head. "Awful," he said.

Byron shrugged. "I guess I'm used to it now, but I like complaining about them to outsiders once in a while," he said.

"That's not a bad thing," Ning said. "Get your stress out. However you can."

Byron nodded. "It truly does help qu—" he paused for a second when a distant light flashed. He turned in the direction away from the town and heard the distant rumbling of the thunder.

"It's coming," he said and quickly pulled out the lightning Essence crystal that Ning had given to him. As soon as it was out, he started injecting Essence into it, which surprised Ning quite a bit.

"You're putting Essence into it?" he asked.

"Yes," Byron said, focusing as much as he could to keep his Essence inside of the crystal without letting it slip out in the least.

Ning was confused and wanted to ask more, but he assumed that he had to let the man do what he wanted to do. He could ask his questions later.

As he focused his Essence inside the lightning crystal, he created something with his Fire Essence at the same time.

A fire bow appeared in the hand that he held the stone. While focusing on the stone, he pulled onto the bow string, which caused a fire arrow to appear onto it.

Ning frowned a little, having even fewer ideas as to just what was going on. The curiosity inside of him was killing him and he was a moment away from asking the system, but he wanted to see whatever was going to happen here happen first.

The young man pulled the arrow as much as he could and let it go.

The fire arrow flung out from the bow that dissipated the moment it was let go. It flew into the sky with a ferocious speed, flying all the way up to the clouds with the speed it kept.

At the same time, the man held onto the crystal with the maximum amount of Essence it could hold without blowing up.

"Any second now," the man said softly. "Get ready."

Ning was even more excited than the man.

Then, as the man had said, it appeared at the next second.

A lightning bolt.

Ning looked at the lightning bolt, surprised at its appearance. Most lightning bolts were jagged in nature, with no real path as they zigged and zagged as they made their way to their destination.

However, this lightning bolt was straight and from what Ning could tell, it had followed the path of the arrow that the man had launched into the sky.

'It was a guidance arrow,' Ning realized. 'To show the path for the lightning bolt.'

Time had slowed for him as he watched the lightning bolt fall onto the man. And just before it fell on him, he pushed just a little more Essence into the crystal.

The crystal shattered instantly, the the Lightning Essence inside of it sought the only familiar thing they could find in that area.

The lightning bolt.

Chapter 1264 Lesson

When the Lightning Essence made its way out of the Lightning Essence Crystal, it immediately forced its way into the lightning bolt.

Byron breathed quickly and heavily as he had been just a moment away from getting struck by lightning.

"Haha! I did it," he said before quickly bringing out an anvil and hammer that fell onto the boat.

"Are you going to hammer it here?" Ning asked.

"Yes," he said and grabbed onto the glowing lightning bolt with bluish light in it. It was neither lightning nor was it Essence at that point.

At that point, it was something in the middle, something unstable that needed form, and Byron was in the process of doing exactly that.

He pulled on the… thing and started hammering it.

Ning looked at the lightning bolt and saw it go all the way up to the sky, where it had followed the path that the arrow had left behind.

"Uhh… will the lightning not strike this and follow it down?" he asked.

Byron took a moment to look up. "Probably not," he said and went back to work.

Ning shrugged and watched him work as well.

Byron hammered away while pulling from the glowing lighting essence bolt. As he hammered and pulled, the long line of it started becoming smaller and thinner as the part at the top was pulled down by him.

Ning stared into the sky and saw the thin line still remain. 'Is it really going to be—'

Just as he was thinking that the sky crackled and a large bolt of lightning fell onto the line, following it all the way to the boat where Byron was making the sword.

Without hesitation, Ning jumped onto the Lightning Essence bolt and held onto it for a moment.

The large bolt of lightning that fell from the sky fell on him, causing a large explosive sound that reverberated, following the thunderous noise as it spread around.

Byron fell backward onto the boat in surprise and fear and looked up to see bright sparks of fire spreading all around while Ning held onto the line,

The lightning that fell on him had also charged the light that Byron was using, making it stronger.

"Wh-what?" Byron cried out, not understanding what had happened.

Ning landed on the boat and looked at his clothes. "Tsk! If only I hadn't already capped out my daily absorption," he said.

"Are you okay?" Byron quickly asked. "Are you hurt? Are you even alive?"

"Can't you see?" Ning asked.

Byron gulped. "But… but how?" he asked. He looked at Ning, unable to form a single coherent thought that could explain what had just happened.

As if to add to the confusion, Ning snapped his fingers and the clothes he wore were magically fixed.

"What is going on?" Byron asked, pleading even. "Am I dreaming? Wake me up if I'm dreaming. Please. I don't like this."

Ning chuckled. "Are you sure you're gonna let all your work be for nothing?" he asked, pointing to the Lightning Essence Bolt that still needed working on.

"Ah!" Byron shouted and quickly jumped back into work and started hammering away.

Ning looked at the sky while Byron finished what he was doing. As he did away with all the available matter-essence hybrid to work with, he was finally left with a blob of energy that just needed a bit more work.

He continued hammering for a while longer while visualizing what he wanted to make at the same time. As he reached the end, he finished crafting a white sword with a bluish hue to it.

Ads by Pubfuture

"I… I did it," he said, happily. "I did it!"

Excitement filled the man as he showed Ning the sword. It was raining heavily and he was quite drenched, but he didn't care.

He smiled wide and big, showing the sword to Ning. "Haha! See? I told you I could do it. I did it!" he shouted.

"Congratulations," Ning said. "That looks like a nice sword."

"It is," the man said.

"Great! And do you want to celebrate it here, underneath the storm?" he asked.

"Huh?" the man looked above. "Oh, shit!"

He quickly sat down and put inside his anvil and hammer before he started rowing the boat. Ning sat down and did the same.

They quickly got out of the danger zone, flying closer to the port.

As they got close, Byron started bonding to the sword that was in his hands.

Ning continued rowing and spoke, "While you do that, can you explain in detail what you just did?"

"Huh? Oh yeah, sure," the man said. "What I did was force my Essence inside the crystal and agitate it. Normally, Essence only comes out of the Crystal when someone uses a technique to absorb it, but forcing it from the inside is unnatural and thus it resists." 𝓷oν𝑒𝙡𝖇𝔦𝔫.𝔫.𝑛𝔢𝑡

"When it does cross the limit of agitation and fully breaks open, it searched for the closest thing it can inhabit," the man said. "Depending on the size of your crystal, it can inhabit something big."

"When it does that, your Essence goes inside that thing too, and it ends up turning into this hybrid as you see which you can control," the man said.

"Using a large Water Essence crystal, one could quickly fill up the giant wave as you asked. Using a Lightning Essence crystal, I did so with the lightning bolt."

"Once that is done, all that is left is to visualize and form the hybrid into what you want," the man said. "That is how you can capture something giant at once."

"I see," Ning said. "What else does this work with, other than lightning and giant wave?"

"Hmm… many things I would say," the man said. "Anything that you have to capture in a hurry could be used this way. Most common of all is usually Explosion Essence, which is really just Fire Essence and Wind Essence that works together at once."

"I see," Ning said. "Once I can convert stuff, I will give those all a try."

Chapter 1265 The Chubby Young Master

Ning brought out an umbrella and stood by the port while Byron tied up his little boat to the side. He had to tie it up well so that it didn't drift away on its own.

As for stealing, he wasn't worried about that at all. Anyone that would want to steal this little thing of his would have to be blind to not see the hundreds of better ones that were far easier to steal.

"Can't you keep your boat inside your storage artifact?" Ning asked. "Or is there not enough space?"

"Brother, there is barely enough space to put anything other than the hammer and anvil inside my storage ring," he said. "I would have to pay a fortune to get one that could fit this entire thing."

"I see," Alex said. "Is it expensive? Those storage artifacts. Given how many people I've seen them with, I had thought they were cheap around here."

"No, the smaller ones are cheap for sure, compared to what I hear they cost in the other empires, but as the size increase, the price increase exponentially," he said. "I would have to sell all the weapons in my shop and then my shop to afford the size of storage you just asked me about."

"I see," Ning said. "Not that you can sell them anyway, isn't that right?"

Byron gave a small smile full of grimace before walking under Ning's umbrella. "Let's return," he said.

Ning nodded and walked along.

The city had not come to a stop with the rain. The people of the city were already used to it and were accepting of it.

The beasts pulled carts, that people rode around. Others just walked.

The businesses were still open, functioning perfectly in the rain. Even the fish market by the port was in business in the rain, with the fish being kept in ice that someone created using Essence.

"By the way, did you leave your daughter alone in the hotel?" the man asked.

"No, she's out doing something. I don't know what," Ning said.

"You don't know what your daughter is doing? That's…"

Ads by Pubfuture

"Irresponsible?" Ning asked before chuckling. "Don't worry about my daughter. She is strong enough even without me."

"Oh," the man said. "Is that beast with her?"

"She is," Ning said.

"Ah!" Byron finally understood why Ning had let his daughter be alone in the city. Or at least he thought he did.

They arrived back in the shop and Byron walked on with Ning following him. Halfway through the shop, Byron stopped and turned around. "Why are you following me?" he asked.

"Hmm? Why can't I follow you?" Ning asked.

"No, I just… I taught you everything I knew. I thought that was our agreement. I teach you and I get the crystal," Byron said.

"Oh! You're right," Ning said, looking around. "I forgot I was done with it all. Why did I follow you here?"

Byron couldn't help but snicker a little when watching a godlike man be forgetful, just like anyone else.

"Anyway, I will leave then," Ning said. "Thanks for teaching me everything—"

"BYRON!" a loud voice called out the man.

Ning stopped speaking when he heard that and looked in the direction of the shout. There, he saw a chubby man in his 30s quickly walk into the shop while pointing at Byron.

Byron frowned when he saw the young man. "What is it?" he asked the newcomer.

"You little bastard! You should tell us when something good comes by the shop," the man spoke. 𝔫𝙤ѵ𝑒𝙡𝖇Ꭵ𝖓.𝘯𝙚𝘵

"What? What are you talking about?" Byron asked.

"The Lightning Crystal," the chubby man said. "I heard you went to make a sword with it already. Where is it?"

Byron frowned and eyed the staff around him. They had leaked the message? He shouldn't have been careless.

Ads by Pubfuture

"I have it," Byron said. "I indeed managed to make a sword out of it."

"Amazing!" the chubby man said. "Cousin, you are a genius. Where is the sword? Give it to me already."

"I won't," Byron said. "It is my sword."

"What? No, it is the shop's sword, and I own the shop," the man said.

Ning managed to understand the identity of the fellow that had just arrived. 'The mayor's son huh? Doesn't look like he has had to ever work a single day in his life,' Ning thought. 'How is he barely in the Essence Manifestation realm with all the resources he must have? That too with a Water core.'

It was obvious that this man was lazy. The only time he ever put in any effort in his life was probably on the toilet to shit all of what he ate the other night.

"It may be your shop," Byron said. "But neither the Lightning Crystal nor the Sword ever belonged to the shop. As such, it was never yours at any moment. I am the sword's sole owner."

The chubby man thought for a bit and shrugged. "Fine take that sword," he said. "But make me another one. One that is stronger than yours."

"I can't," Byron said. "I don't have lightning crystals."

"Just ask that man that you encountered," the chubby man said. "I was told there was someone that brought out two Lightning Crystals. I'm sure he has more."

"Are you talking about me?" Ning asked.

The chubby man turned around. "Hmm? You are the one with the lightning crystal?" he asked with a doubtful look.

"Yes," Ning said.

"Hmm… Why are you so weak?" he asked.

Ning had switched to his Sound core and as a result, the man saw him as a weakling.

"Doesn't matter," the man said. "Just bring out one of the lightning cores you have and I shall compensate you for—"

"Young master!" a man came rushing into the shop. "Young master, are you here?"

He walked in and stopped when he saw the chubby man.

"Why are you shouting in the shop? It's unsightly," the chubby man said.

The man that rushed in finally saw the chubby man and said hurriedly.

"Young master! Your father has been injured."

Chapter 1266 The Mayor

"What? What happened to my father?" the chubby man asked hurriedly.

"You must go back home quickly," the man said. "I will find a doctor and quickly follow you."

"I'm a doctor," Ning said, butting in. "If you need any immediate help."

"You are?" the Chubby man asked.

"You are?" Byron asked as well.

"I am," Ning said. "I can go and check what is wrong with the mayor."

"That's good enough for me," the chubby man said. "Let us go."

He started walking away without hesitation. Ning followed behind the mayor's son, and Byron couldn't help but follow them as well. With his Uncle apparently, in trouble, he had to go. "You, go find another doctor just in case," the chubby man said before making his way back toward the mayor's mansion.

The chubby man was slow in his walking, but as someone in the Essence Manifestation realm, he was still faster than a normal human when it came to walking.

The other two were behind, barely stopping themselves from just sprinting ahead, but judging by the man's anger issues, it would have been a bad idea.

They arrived some minutes later at a mansion that was built on a small hill and required climbing a few stairs to reach. There seemed to be two roads that went around the hill to the mansion at the top but that was likely reserved for beasts pulling carts.

The humans simply had to climb the stairs.

After climbing up the stairs, the three of them were presented with a chaotic atmosphere as most maids and servants had no idea what they were supposed to do. 𝓷𝙤ν𝙚𝒍𝔟𝔦𝙣.𝗻𝚎t

"Move aside!" the chubby man spoke, rushing through the crowd to go to where his father was.

Ning and Byron rushed behind him as well, entering the mansion as quickly as they could. As they entered, Ning saw that there were three more people that were being taken care of. He wanted to stay ad check on them, but the mayor seemed the more important person to look after in this place.

They arrived in a room with servants that took care of the mayor, by washing his face with water and applying homemade ointments on him for early treatment.

"What's going on? What is wrong with my father?" the chubby man spoke.

The servants were a little scared when they heard the shout and moved away from the mayor. "Master is injured," one of them said. "His… his neck is broken, and he's unconscious."

"What?" the chubby man shouted before rushing to his father's side. "Father? Are you okay? Can you hear me?

But of course, the mayor could not hear his son at all.

Ning looked from where he was and could already see the swelling at the back of the old man's neck from the broken bones. He looked at the other parts of his body with his various visions and noticed multiple instances where his body was struck with some blunt objects.

While the bones there hadn't broken, the area was certainly bruised.

"You said you are a doctor, right?" the chubby man asked. "See what is wrong with my father."

'Damn! He doesn't even say please,' Ning thought, walking up to the old man before acting as if he was checking on a few things. "Hmm, nothing is actually wrong with him," Ning said. "He must have hit his head or something or was attacked by something that caused him to faint. Your father will wake up on his own in time."

"Really? He's… he's not hurt?" the man asked.

Byron looked at his Uncle's figure and could tell that it was hurt. But then… why was Ning lying? "He will wake up on his own after your own home treatment," Ning said. "But, if you want to wake him up quickly, bring me a bunch of lemons."

"Lemons?" the man asked before shouting out loud. "Lemons! Bring me lemons."

Ads by Pubfuture

A few of the maids and servants rushed to get the lemons and using that moment, Ning quickly healed the old man. He was still going to be asleep for a while, but he could be woken up by feeding something.

"What happened to my father?" the young man asked. "He was supposed to be in the forest, hunting beats."

"He must have come across a particularly strong beast then," Ning said. "It must have hit him on his head, knocking him out."

"Is that so?" the man asked before turning around. "Where are the others that are always by my father? Those men. Bring them here right now."

"They…" one of the servants spoke. "They are injured too, young master. They are in the hall, waiting for the doctor."

"What?" the chubby man asked. "Goddamn useless pieces of—"

"The lemon!" someone brought it quickly.

Ning took the lemon and quickly squeezed it into the old man's mouth, feeding the juices directly in. The old man caught and screamed in anger as he woke up. "What the hell? Ptui! Ptui!" he spit out the lemon juice.

"Father!" the chubby man said. "You are alright."

"Of course, I am…" the mayor paused. "What happened to me?"

"I don't know," The man asked. "You were supposed to be in the forest. How were you hurt?"

"I was…" the mayor thought. "I was in the forest and… and I saw a beast. An incredible beast. I went to it and then—"

"Young Master!" someone walked into the room. It was the person that had gone to get the doctor.

"Mayor?" his eyes widened in shock. "Mayor, you're alright!" "I am," the mayor said. "What happened to me? Why did I faint?"

"Do you not remember the battle, Mayor?" the man asked.

"Battle?" the mayor finally recalled and his eyes went wide in anger. "That little bitch! Find her!"

"I already found her, mayor," the man said. "Some of my men already noticed her coming back."

"Good!" the mayor said, getting out of bed. "Gather everyone. We will get her this time."

Chapter 1267 Barricade

"Father! What is going on?" the chubby son asked his chubby father. "Just follow me. You will se—" The mayor paused when he arrived in the hallway and saw the three unconscious men that he had taken with them.

"Useless!" he shouted. "Don't provide them any treatment." Then he continued on outside, shouting for someone to bring him his carriage.

A large horse with flowing blue locks rode to the front with a blue carriage pulled behind it. The old man quickly got onto it and waited a moment for his son to get on. As for Ning or Byron, he didn't stop for either and simply rushed off.

A different carriage came, one with a few more men and that too went past them. Ning turned to Byron. "They really don't care about you, do they?" he asked.

Byron could only sigh as his response. "Let's go, see what is happening," he said. "I'm sure they will rush back to me and you once they are done with it anyway."

"They really are a bunch of assholes," Ning said. "Let's go."

They walked down the long staircase, arriving at the bottom where they couldn't really tell which direction the carriages had gone.

"Uncle came from the northern forest, so this direction," Byron pointed to his left.

Ning nodded as he knew exactly what direction he was supposed to go. He sprinted with Byron, making their way toward the mayor. The fresh smell of rain hadn't yet left the air, and the water streamed along the sidelines of the streets, making its way down to the port where it would meet the ocean.

"You are in the Essence Soul realm aren't you?" Ning asked the man.

Byron was surprised for a second that Ning had found out but lost all of that emotion when he remember who he was talking to. "Yes, Low Essence Soul realm," he said.

"And they still treat you like this?" Ning asked.

"I don't have any fighting skills and am only useful as a converter. So they don't have much use for me aside from at the shop," Byron said.

"God damn, you have a pitiful life, my friend," Ning said. "I'll see if I can help you in any way before I leave this city in a few days."

"You're leaving in a few days?" Byron asked as he ran.

"Of course," Ning said. "I don't have much to do in this city anyway. I will leave as soon as my daughter no longer has any fun in this place."

"I see," Byron said. "So you only stay around somewhere for your daughter's sake?"

"Not really," Ning said. "This just so happens to be the first journey my daughter is on. I'm letting her make the decisions. If not for that…" Byron waited for him to say something but he didn't. Instead, a large sound was sent resounding through the city.

"What is that?" Ning asked.

"Call to arms," Byron said. "It calls for everyone in the Low Essence soul realm to come to where the horn was raised in order to prepare for a fight."

"You too?" Ning asked.

"Me too," Byron said.

"I thought you didn't know how to fight," Ning said.

"Doesn't matter. I have to use my weapons in that case and shoot out a few things," Byron said. "It's not that bad though."

They ran for a while and quickly saw someone running from the other side as well.

After a minute they arrived on an area of barricade where the mayor was standing with his son and other men. They were doing nothing as men gathered and waited in patience.

"There must be a beast coming from the northern side," Byron said.

"Is there?" Ning wondered. He was sure that he heard the man say 'her' and not 'it'. Unless it was a beast intelligent enough to appear feminine to these morons, he doubted they would use 'Her'.

The others seemed to be absolutely certain that it was a beast and waited.

"Do beasts come a lot this way?" Nig asked Byron.

"Once in a while," Byron said. "Never needs more than a single person with Essence Soul realm to deal with it, but we all come just in case."

"Byron, stop talking and watch!" the mayor shouted without even looking back.

Byron sighed and shrugged toward Ning, who could only give an understanding look. A few minutes later, a man came running toward the barricade. "I saw them," he said. "They're coming."

"All of them?" the mayor asked.

The man who was huffing in and out hurriedly nodded. The mayor couldn't be happier than seeing him nod.

"This is good news, boys," he said. "Any moment, we are going to get 3 beasts at once."

"Three beasts?"

"Three?"

Byron was a little surprised. "3 beasts are coming? That's a lot," he thought. "I hope they aren't in the Essence Soul realm. That would be difficult to deal with."

"I don't think this forest has any beast higher than the Essence Manifestation realm," Ning said. "We made sure of that before coming here."

"Huh?" Byron asked, but Ning didn't elaborate.

"They're here!" the mayor pointed and everyone looked in the distance.

"So that's the be—" Byron paused when he looked in the distance. He paused for a bit, confused a little. He stared for a bit before turning to look at Ning who had an unusual smile on his face.

"Well, that's weird," he said. "I didn't realize she went to the forest."

"That's…"

Ning nodded. "That's a girl," one of them said. "Are we here to fight with the beasts next to her?"

"Must be," another one said. "Where are the two other beasts beside it?" The mayor seemed to enraged by the line of thought. "You morons! Who told you we were fighting a beast?" he asked. "I called you all here to take care of that girl." 𝗻𝗼𝘷𝑒𝘭𝗯𝓲𝒏.𝓃𝑒𝒕

All of the people there including the chubby son couldn't help but look at the mayor in confusion.

"Huh?" It was impossible for anyone to have thought that they were here to fight a girl. After all, who in their right mind would ever come to that conclusion?

Given the past history, it was only right to think that it was a beast that they were fighting. So when it was revealed to be a girl, they were of course all surprised and confused.

"Mayor, we're fighting a little girl?" one of them asked.

"Do I have to write it on paper and send each of you it as a paper before you realize it?" the mayor shouted at them. "Yes, that's the girl we're fighting. And that beast and its children are the 3 things we are taking from her."

Everyone felt awkward hearing that. They didn't want to fight the little girl at all.

"If it helps," the man by the mayor spoke. "That little girl beat up our group in the forest and left 3 of us 5 half dead. Even the mayor was unconscious when I brought him back."

"Oh!" the people said.

"Yes, that girl attacked me out of nowhere," the mayor said. "She hurt me. Find me justice."

The men were finally somewhat accepting of the fact that they had to fight the little girl.

Ning watched in awe as the men prepared to fight his daughter, right in front of him. He could only smile at what was coming up ahead.

Emma had already seen the barricade and the mayor that was at the front. "How is he alright?" she thought. "I'm sure I broke his neck. She should be bedridden for months."

She looked around and saw her father. "What is father doing here?" she wondered.

"I'm confused," Umbra said.

"Me too," Emma said. "But Papa is here, so he must have known about our fight already. Let's go."

She continued along her path without worry and made her way toward the barricade.

"Yes, she's coming," the mayor said. "When she gets here, make sure to—"

"Mayor!" Ning quickly spoke up. "What?" the mayor spoke angrily, annoyed at the fact that he had been stopped from giving his command.

Everyone there turned to look at Ning, most not recognizing him at all. The mayor was even more angry that he didn't know who it was, and that he was so weak.

He couldn't even tell why he was there. He only somewhat remembered that he was with Byron.

"Byron! Take that bastard away!" the mayor shouted.

"Mayor!" Ning shouted back. "Do you know who I am?"

The mayor paused for a second. He stared at Ning, but couldn't recognize him at all. "Who are you?" he asked.

The chubby son quickly spoke into his father's ears, telling him who he was.

"Ah, you're my doctor?" the mayor said. "Step aside."

"Mayor, I healed you and I demand compensation," Ning said. "Healed me? I was alright from the beginning," the mayor said.

"No, I healed you," Ning said. "Ask your man what your situation was."

The man next to the mayor nodded. "You were severely hurt, mayor. And your neck was broken too. I don't know how that young man healed you, but he did," the man said.

"Oh, well… thank you," the mayor said.

"Mayor, you know better than anyone here that there is no free meal in this world," Ning said. "You must pay for the healing you received."

"Sure, we'll talk about it later," the mayor said.

"No, now," Ning said.

"Lat—"

"Now!" Ning shouted.

The mayor got angry. "Fine! What do you want? give it to him," he said to his subordinate.

Ning grinned. "I want 20 Million Fire Coins."

Chapter 1268 I Won't Heal You

The people around Ning suddenly shook their heads as if they wanted to clear their ears and hear what he had just said more clearly.

The chubby son gave a confused look and the mayor was even more confused.

"Come again?" he said.

"20 million fire coins," Ning said loudly, loud enough for anyone to hear him. "That is the price that I ask of you for healing you."

"That… isn't that too much?" the mayor said. "Most doctors take barely a few hundred coins."

"Are you not having to sleep in the bed properly, having to be fed by servants, have your shit cleaned by them, while you can't even turn your head for 8 whole months worth just a few hundred coins?"

"Is that relief not worth more?" Ning asked, demandingly. "Yes… but, 20 million…" The mayor didn't know what to say. "That's a lot."

"Yes, and I demand you that you pay me," Ning said. The mayor looked at him with an even more confused look. He was more so confused if he was speaking to an actual human with some sense in him. "Brother Ning," Byron tried to speak, but Ning cut him off.

"Please pay your dues, mayor," he said.

"Father, don't listen to him. No one is going to pay so much to him," the chubby son said. The mayor frowned at this point. "Doctor, you are being delusional," he said. "We will talk about this later." He turned around to speak again, but Ning cut him off.

"Will you pay me my fees later then?" Ning asked. "All 20 million of it." 𝒏օν𝖊ɭ𝘣𝔦𝚗.𝚗𝖊𝘵

"Do you know how much 20 million fire coins is young man?" one person cut him off."

"That's 60 million earth coins," another person said.

"Yes," Ning said to them. "And a hundred million water coins. What of it?" The mayor shook his head. "You truly don't understand just how much that is, do you?" he asked in an exasperated voice. "Fine, I'll let you know now that I won't be paying for it."

"You will get 4000 fire coins, not 20 million. Now go away," the mayor said.

Ning smiled internally at this point. "Are you saying that you won't pay me my dues, mayor?" he asked. "You won't pay me the fees I asked for?"

"You know what?" the mayor said. "Screw you. You might have healed me, but that doesn't mean I'll let you rob me alive. Since you are so insistent on asking me the same question, I'll answer you directly."

"No! I won't pay your fees. Now fuck off and let me do what I came here to do," he said, turning around. A few men came toward Ning to push him away.

"Fine! If you won't pay me my fees then I will just not heal you as well," Ning said.

"Not heal me?" the mayor was a little confused. "What does that even mean? I'm already heal—"

Ning pushed past the Low Essence realm people and reached for the mayor. His hand landed on the mayor's neck and at the next moment, a loud resounding snap could be heard.

He broke the mayor's neck.

The mayor couldn't even scream as his eyes went wide with pain and shock and he fell unconscious, dropping to the ground.

"Mayor!" the people shouted.

"Father!" the chubby young man shouted as well. They rushed to the mayor with some of them grabbing onto Ning. However, it was too late.

The mayor's neck had been snapped once more and he was in a coma now. Ning couldn't help but smile at his own work. He turned toward his daughter who had a horrified look and winked at her before turning to look at the people that grabbed him.

"Would you kindly let go of me?" he asked. "I don't want to hurt you people who are only following orders."

"You hurt our mayor. You won't get away from this freely," one of the men said.

"Oh!" Ning said with a surprised face. "I can't get away from here freely you say. Am I being compensated or something? Were you that unhappy with your mayor?"

The other people turned to look at Ning before turning back around toward the mayor to look at him. The ones that held onto Ning looked at him with a face that only a sane person would have when looking at an insane one.

"You are not mentally right, brother," one of them said.

"Well, he did just threaten to hurt my daughter," Ning said, looking at the man. "What did you expect me to do? Just stand around and let you all attack her?"

"What?" someone asked. "Your daughter?" another asked.

"Of course," Ning said. "And of course, the 20 million Fire coins were a joke as well. Haha, I was not going to make him pay me that much for something I had initially done for free."

The people were confused as to what exactly was going on. "Papa?" Emma called from the side. A few of them turned to look toward the girl who was making her way to the barricade. "Papa, what is going on?" she asked.

"Emma, honey. Were you attacked by this man and his people?" Ning asked while being held onto by the other people.

Emma nodded. "That man came to me and asked me if I was going to sell Umbra, Lory, and Lyra. When I said no, he tried to beat me and take them away."

"So I beat them all, but left that one mostly unharmed to take them all back," she said, pointing at the man that was with the mayor.

The man turned when hearing the voice and was more than scared by Emma's presence. There was no way he wanted to fight her at all.

"You hear that?" Ning asked the others around me. "The mayor is the bad guy here."

"You expect us to believe it just like that?" one of them said. "We will hear both sides of the story," another said.

"Even if your daughter is not guilty, you are. You won't get away from this freely," finally another one said.

Ning sighed. He had to use a different method then.

Chapter 1269 A Little Show

The chubby son of the mayor tried to wake his father up, but no matter what he did, he couldn't he couldn't wake up his father at all.

The man by his side seemed to have stopped trying too, looking behind him at something. The son turned around and saw the girl that had initially injured his father.

"Someone!" he shouted. "Kill that girl!" However, no one moved immediately, mostly for two reasons.

First, it didn't look like the girl was the guilty person in this case at all. If her side of the story was to be believed, then it was the mayor that wanted to steal her beasts.

Given that they knew about the mayor's personality, they were more than willing to accept this side of him, more than the fact that this little girl had beaten them for no reason.

Secondly, this girl had beaten the mayor while he was with 4 other people. They were not going to go out and attack her just because some fat guy told them to.

They would have to be careful.

Adding onto that the fact that the mayor's son didn't hold as much authority over them, none of them immediately moved at all.

They all looked at each other, judging who would be the first to move. Whoever it was that moved first would be who the others followed, but no one wanted to be the first person as the chances of getting beat up were high.

Ning looked at them and sighed. "Hey, you lot!" he spoke. "Yes, you lot who are hesitating to go capture my daughter. I can see that you are good people stuck in a bad situation. I will forgive you, just walk away. Don't worry, your mayor won't die here."

The people looked at him and heard him, and that made them hesitate even further. They didn't leave immediately, but they also hesitated more to go capture the girl.

Ning looked at them and realized that they needed a bit more pursuance. He turned around toward Byron who was just a standby at this point, with nothing to do in the situation at all.

He simply stood there and watched everything that unfolded.

"Byron, your senses are strong, correct?" he asked him.

Byron nodded. "More so than anyone's here, by a long shot," he said.

Ning smiled. "You might want to dull them down if you can. Try not to sense the next few things," he said.

Byron wasn't sure what he meant, but he did as he was asked. He focused just on himself, and barely any focus was put outward at all.

Ning turned back around and looked toward his daughter who was confused. Instead of saying something to her, he turned toward Umbra who was next to her.

"Umbra, would you mind scaring them a bit?" he asked.

"Scaring them?" Umbra asked curiously.

"Just a bit of your essence will do," Ning said.

"Okay," Umbra said and without any hesitation released her aura.

Suddenly, the world seemed to darken even more so than the clouded skies that were above everyone's head. The ground darkened even more with the shadow essence that slowly filled the air.

Ads by Pubfuture

The amount of essence was low, but the strength it bore was something else. Living near the ocean, every one of these humans had sensed the passing of a Divine beast in the ocean in the distance.

However, never had they ever sensed something that they felt was beyond all. As close as she was, especially when she tired, the Stellar Harmony realm Umbra felt even more powerful than the Divine realm beasts to these people.

A few dropped to the ground in shock, and two fainted. One started crying and calling for their mother while the remaining ones were simply too scared to do anything at all but tremble in fear as in front of them stood a beast that defied the possibilities that they had set in their mind.

The beasts that came with the carriage cowered in fear as well, trembling in the presence of something far beyond themselves. "That's enough," Ning said and had Umbra take away her aura. When the shadow Essence left, light returned to the area, the ground becoming a bright place again.

The feeling of dread leaving made the people there feel as if they will filled with life again. No longer having to fear that death was imminent, some of them even began to cry in relief.

Byron trembled as well. He had done his best to not try and sense whatever was happening next, but he couldn't help it at all. When else would he gain an opportunity to sense something like this?

He wasn't sure if what he was done was stupid or not, but now that it had passed, he was glad that he did it.

The men that were grabbing only Ning had already loosened their hands or had left him completely. No one there was focused on them anymore.

"So, I will tell you all this one more time," Ning said. "You are all good people, so I will let you all leave. Leave now, or you will have to try and fight the beast."

There was no more hesitating now. The men and women turned around and left, not before glancing at the young girl and the black beast.

Once they were all gone, only 3 people were left there.

Byron, the mayor, and the mayor's son.

Byron had simply not left because he knew Ning wasn't going to hurt him. The Mayor hadn't left because he was unconscious. And as for the son, it didn't take Ning too long to realize that he had shit himself out of fear. 𝘯𝙤𝑣𝙚𝘭𝔟Ꭵ𝓃.𝖓𝚎𝙩

Ning shook his head and looked at Byron. "I will come by your shop tomorrow. Take care of your uncle and cousin for now," he said and walked away.

Byron stood there in awe as he watched Ning leave. He had just terrified the strongest men in the town and was now leaving as if he had done nothing significant at all.

He couldn't help but wish that someday, he could be like that as well.

Chapter 1270 The Items

"Let's go," Ning said to the ground and walked away from the place, taking a different road.

Emma quickly followed next to him, holding his arm. "What was that about, papa?" she asked.

"What do you mean?" Ning asked. "What was what about?"

"You know what I'm asking about," she said. "What were you doing there?"

"Oh, I heard the mayor was ill and went to heal him," Ning said." I wasn't aware you were the one that had made him ill."

"How can you not know that?" she asked. "Doesn't the system tell you everything?"

"Do you think I'm constantly asking the system what you are doing at all times?"

"I would hope you would," Emma said with a little pout. "What sort of father doesn't care about his daughter?"

Ning pinched her nose. "Who said I don't care about you?" he asked.

Emma hit him lightly on the back. "Don't pinch me so hard!" she said. "It hurts."

Ning was the only person ever that could hurt her, so she didn't like it when he pinched her. "I meant were you not curious where I went to?" she asked.

"I was, and I planned on you telling me where you went," he said.

"Oh right," Emma said quickly bringing out the fruit from her storage bag. "Try this."

Ning took the fruit and ate it. "What's this?" he asked, chewing on the fruit. "It's not bad."

"It's Tremania fruit," she said. "It's something I was told to bring back."

"Tremania fruit?" Ning hadn't heard of them before. "Must be a fruit that is local to this country or this continent. The Glacien continent did not have those at all. Where did you get these? In the forest?"

Ads by Pubfuture

"Yes," Emma said, eating one herself and feeding three to the beasts next to her. "Why did you go to the forest?" Ning asked. "Were you bored? Or…"

"I found a shop, like those guilds back at home," she said. "I went in and found some missions, which turned out to be in the forest."

"What sorts of mission?" Ning asked.

"You'll find out soon enough," Emma said. "The shot is actually close by here."

"Just tell me," Ning said excitedly.

"Why? Just wait," she said. "You didn't care enough to know where I was before. Why are you suddenly so curious?"

"Okay, okay, jeez. No need to get grumpy," Ning said, while getting hit by Emma in the back once more.

They arrived at the shop and walked inside while leaving the beasts outside. Emma quickly ran to the counter and spoke to the guy there.

"Hello, I've completed a few missions. What do I do now?" she asked.

"Just get the—"The man paused and looked at Emma. "You completed a few missions?"

"Yes," Emma said. "What sort?" the man couldn't help but ask.

"Uhh… the gathering ones," Emma said.

"Ah! I see," the man said. "Bring me the paper of the mission you completed if it's still there. If it is not, I cannot accept it."

"Understood," Emma said, dragging Ning over to the board. "Pick me the missions I say okay?"

Ning looked at the board and back at his daughter. "You cannot read, can you?" he asked.

"Tremania fruit," she said, ignoring her father. Ning sighed and searched for the thing she asked for.

"Maybell flowers," she said. Ning picked up that as well.

"Stairway Fren."

Ads by Pubfuture

Ning picked up that, and the others that she named one after another. Ning nodded, picking every single one as she told it, which caused the people around them to look at the two in shock.

One of them was the young man that had helped Emma read the papers earlier on. He had come back after completing a mission and was looking for another one to do. He looked at one of the missions and was a little surprised.

As Ning and Emma walked away, he couldn't help but wonder how the two of them could have ever completed this. They weren't strong at all.

Ning walked along flipping through the missions, stopping at the most surprising one. It was the same one the other young man was surprised about.

"You completed this?" he asked. Emma looked at the mission and nodded. "Yeah, this was the easiest," she said.

Ning looked at the mission and frowned for a bit. 'Easiest? How is this the easiest?' he couldn't understand.

Emma snatched the papers and quickly presented them to the man on the counter. The man was a little surprised.

"Woohoo! That's a lot of missions you have there," he said, taking them and picking up the first one.

"Place the proof in this place as I name them then," the man said. "Maybell flower."

Emma placed the flowers on the plate as proof. The man nodded and switched to an empty place. "Starstruck leaves."

Emma placed black leaves with glittering white specks on them into the plate. The man nodded and changed the place again.

One after another he named the mission and Emma put the items as proof.

"Finally, Flamelord… " the man paused when he half-read the title. "What?" he looked up. "You have the Flamelord Deer's Antler?"

"I do," Emma said. "Bringing out the Flamelord Deer's flaming Antler and placing it on the plate as well. The appearance of the Antler caused a stir in the shop, making everyone come look at it.

"Where did you get this from, girl?"

"Did you hire someone to kill the deer?"

"You didn't get this thing." If yᴏu ωant to read more chapters, Please visi̾t̾ 𝔫𝗼νℯ𝙡𝙗Ꭵ𝖓.𝑛𝔢𝒕 tᴏ experience faster update speed.

"Are we sure that's not fake? Can anyone tell?"

The people cried out over the antler. Ning was quite surprised as well, but not for the reasons they were.

Ning knew about the Flamelord Deer. He knew about every beast on the planet. As such, he knew that only the Flamelord Deer could use its antler.

For a human to use the antler, he would have to take it out of the deer and that would involve hurting the deer badly, or worse even killing it.

And he could not imagine his daughter being capable of doing either of those things to a living thing.
